U18 Report: Saints 0-3 Fulham

Show/hide article…

First-half strikes from Cameron Thompson and Chris Kelly were compounded by Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson’s calmly taken penalty to give the Lillywhites a 3-0 advantage at the break.

And despite a much-improved second-half display, Saints were unable to work a way back into the league fixture at Staplewood Campus.

It was the visitors came closest in the opening stages of the match, as Adam Parkes was forced to palm Thorsteinsson’s early whipped free-kick onto the crossbar and behind.

Fulham made their breakthrough on the 23rd minute. Having worked the ball to the left byline, it was then cut back for the onrushing Thompson who fired low into Parkes’ bottom left corner.

Ten minutes later the Lillywhites doubled their advantage. Having seen the ball bounce around the Saints penalty area, Kelly eventually took control, moving it onto his right foot and rifling in at the near post.

There was to be another before Saints could get in for half-time. Thompson jinked inside his man and was felled in the area by Connor Langan on the right of the penalty area, leaving referee Christopher Wicks to point to the spot.

Thornsteinsson then stepped up to take for the visitors, and dispatched his penalty confidently past Parkes into the bottom left corner to make it three before the break.

Saints started the second-half more brightly and could have pulled one back early on had Fulham ‘keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond not been equal to Will Smallbone’s rasping volley from 20-yards.

The visitors almost added another to their tally shortly after. After a mazy run Thorsteinsson came close again, only to see his curled effort rebound off the outside of Parkes’ far post.

Saints continue to press into the closing stages of the encounter, but the visitors held on to secure a 3-0 victory.

Match Preview: Saints vs Chelsea

Show/hide article…

What’s at stake?

Two in-form teams go head-to-head at St Mary’s, with Southampton looking to make it six Premier League games unbeaten, while Chelsea are seeking a fourth consecutive win in the competition.

Saints are yet to be beaten at home this season, and will be desperate to protect the record, having lost narrowly to the Blues, 2-1, when the teams met on the south coast last term.

Chelsea start the weekend in fourth place, but just one point off top spot, and will be hoping they can climb at least a bit further.

Saints start the day in eighth, knowing a win would cut the gap to Chelsea to just three points.

Team news

Ryan Bertrand will be assessed ahead of kick-off to see if he can return from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him the last few weeks. Saints are definitely without Cédric, Matt Targett, Shane Long, Jake Hesketh, Jay Rodriguez and Alex McCarthy.

For Chelsea, defender Branislav Ivanović is fit again, after recovering from a dislocated shoulder. Midfielder Cesc Fàbregas, who scored when the teams met at St Mary’s last season, is definitely out with a thigh injury.

Form guide

Southampton’s last five:

Sunderland (h) W 1-0 (EFL Cup)

Manchester City (a) D 1-1

Internazionale (a) L 0-1 (Europa League)

Burnley (h) W 3-1

Leicester City (a) D 0-0

Chelsea’s last five:

West Ham (a) L 1-2 (EFL Cup)

Manchester United (h) W 4-0

Leicester City (h) W 3-0

Hull City (a) W 2-0

Arsenal (a) L 0-3

Top performers

Sofiane Boufal’s stunning goal in the EFL Cup win over Sunderland in midweek means there will be plenty of attention on him if he plays this Sunday. Nathan Redmond has bagged two goals in his last two Premier League outings, and will hope to continue his fine form.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (7), Nathan Redmond (3)

Most assists: Six players (1)

The Blues head to St Mary’s with plenty of firepower, having netted nine goals in the course of their last three Premier League fixtures. Diego Costa heads their scoring charts, but Eden Hazard, with two in his last two top-flight matches is also one to watch, as always.

Top scorers: Diego Costa (7), Eden Hazard (6)

Most assists: Nemanja Matic (5), Pedro (3), Cesc Fàbregas (3)

Previous meetings

All-time record:

Played: 95

Southampton: 28

Draw: 28

Chelsea: 39

Last four meetings:

February 2016: Southampton 1-2 Chelsea (Long)

December 2014: Southampton 1-1 Chelsea (Mané)

Did you know?

Chelsea have lost just one of their last eight Premier League visits to Southampton, winning five and drawing two.

Southampton are unbeaten in nine Premier League games at home, since losing 2-1 to the Blues in February.

Only Liverpool, with 59, have more shots on target so far this season than Saints, who have managed 55.

Martina relishing recent run

Show/hide article…

An injury to Cédric earlier this month has meant Martina has taken up the duties at right-back, and he has been enjoying the opportunity.

“The coach gave me a chance to show myself and I’ve taken that with both hands and I’ve showed him that I can play,” said Martina.

“I’m playing now every two days – after every two days we have a game at the moment – and I’m playing now.”

Of course, the heavy fixture schedule also poses its own challenges, but with Sunday’s clash with Chelsea marking the second of three consecutive home games, Martina explained there is no issue with the workload.

"Sometimes it’s difficult, especially if you are travelling away, but if you have a few games at home, like now, then it is quite ok,” he said.

"We are enjoying it a lot, because there are many games over these weeks. We need to stay fit and keep playing well, of course.”

Manchester United star Eric Bailly nearly joined this Premier League rival

Show/hide article…

Bailly joined United for £30m from Villarreal in the summer and was Jose Mourinho’s first signing as manager.

However, Arsenal legend Nicholas has revealed how Southampton were keen on him before going for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

“A former team-mate of mine from Aberdeen is one of their Spanish scouts and he identifies Spain and Portugal,” he told Sky Sports.

Martina: Unbeaten run can go on

Show/hide article…

Saints welcome the high-flying Blues to St Mary’s, where Claude Puel’s side are yet to suffer a loss this season, in any competition.

"We haven’t lost at home yet, and we want to keep it like that,” said Martina. “If we fight as a team, then I we can win.”

As well as going undefeated in their seven home games this term, Saints have conceded just three goals during the course of those matches, making for two records that Martina and his colleagues are proud of.

"For the defenders, it’s nice and good to keep clean sheets and not lose at home,” he said.

“If you can keep that then the confidence can grow more and more.”

Fleming: We were not good enough

Show/hide article…

Saints found themselves three down by the break at Staplewood, and Fleming felt that at least two of the first-half goals could have been easily avoided.

“The first half we were awful,” he said.

“We can’t shy away from it. Defensively we were poor, on the ball we were poor – we were not good enough in the first half.

“Apart from the penalty, the other two goals came from awful defending, which is something we haven’t done all season. They were two soft goals to concede.

“In the second half we improved and created a few chances, but the game was dead and buried by that point.”

Despite the performance and result, Fleming explained that he was hopeful his young side would learn from such a display.

However, he also noted that the first-half performance was unacceptable at any level.

“We can’t get too carried away,” he continued.

“Last Monday we had nine of our boys on the pitch against Manchester City for the Under-23s, so there is that progression there.

“We have been playing with a very young side, and that, physically, can make a big difference at this age group in particular.

“That said, it is no excuse for the first-half performance we saw. That’s just not the way that Southampton play.”

Puel: Romeu is a different type of defensive midfielder

Show/hide article…

He made have played in the same position as Oriol Romeu during his playing days, but Southampton boss Claude Puel says the Spaniard is a different type of defensive midfielder.

Romeu has had an extremely impressive start to the season, and continues to go from strength to strength at the base of Puel’s midfield.

The system, it seems, is working for the former Barcelona man, and while Puel accepts he played the same position during his time as a player, he has praised Romeu for his ability on the ball.

“He’s more technical,” he told reporters ahead of Sunday’s game against Chelsea – Romeu’s former club. “I was a different generation.

“I played in front of the defence and I had a good recovery of the ball, but now it’s important in modern football to have a player in this position who is very technical.

“The play for this position, it’s important the player can have a good ability to work the ball and to change and to switch it wide while anticipating the situation.

“It’s important because it’s a part of the team and all the opponents try to make a good pressing, because every ball recovery on this play is dangerous for the team.

“It is important for this player to be a good technical player, to not lose the ball and to start the action with quality.”

Does Puel see any similarities? “It is the first quality of the player in this position [to be a tough tackler],” he added. “But in this position it is important to protect the defence.

“It is the role of Oriol with us.”

Sunderland have made worst start in Premier League history

Show/hide article…

Sunderland’s damning 4-1 defeat by Arsenal at the Stadium of Light on Saturday has condemned David Moyes’s side to the worst start in Premier League history.

The Black Cats have equalled Manchester City’s haul of only two points from their opening 10 league games in the 1995/96 season - but Sunderland’s inferior goal difference of minus 13 gives them the unwanted honour.

The knives are already out for Moyes, who took over Sam Allardyce in the summer.

The beleaguered boss defended his side in the wake of another hapless performance, which saw doubles for Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez put the Mackems to the sword.

‘I don’t think we deserved to lose 4-1, although obviously we did because of some of our defending,’ Moyes told Sky Sports.

'I thought we grew into it in the second half and when we got back into it I thought we were the better team.

‘Our defending was poor at times, I was disappointed at our defending of crosses. Arsenal can score some great goals but when they are crosses you are disappointed.’

With this Sunderland team and Manchester City’s class of 1995 the only sides with two points after their opening 10 games, the pair are followed by a handful of sides boasting just three points.

John Gorman oversaw Swindon Town’s sole top flight season which saw them ship a record 100 goals, while Crystal Palace struggled in 2013 under Ian Holloway and Mike Walker’s Everton had a disastrous start in 1994-95.

While Gorman survived, both Holloway and Walker were sacked - replaced by Neil Warnock and Joe Royle respectively.

Plenty of the Stadium of Light faithful will be hoping Moyes suffers the same fate.

Opposition View: Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Chelsea have won their last three Premier League games, last winning four in a row in April 2015 on their way to winning the title.

Having examined Saints at close quarters though, the former Italy boss feels the Blues are in for a tough afternoon.

Conte said: “Southampton is a very good team, who are very strong. I watched many games and I like Claude Puel because his team plays offensive football.

“They play their football and it’s important because in their last game against Manchester City they created many chances to score a goal.

“Also, I saw they are more compact in defensive situations so it’s a very good team so it’ll be tough for us.

“It will be a good test for us to continue after three good games and it’s important for our ambitions.”

Just one point separates the top five in the Premier League, but Conte says the Blues are simply taking each game as it comes in a continued search for consistency.

‘This league is very difficult because in every game anything can happen,” he added.

“For this reason it’s important to get consistency in results and performances.

‘There are five teams who are very close but we shouldn’t look at the table, we must be focused on our work on the pitch.

“It’s too early to talk about the table or the title. We must improve game by game and trust in the work, that’s the most important thing.”
