Claude Puel wants Southampton star to emulate Chelsea ace Eden Hazard
Show/hide article…
Moroccan ace Boufal marked his first Saints start with a wonder-goal in the EFL Cup, after a night of tormenting Sunderland’s backline. And Puel, who coached Belgian megastar Hazard as a teenager at Lille, thinks his £16m man can brighten the Premier League like his former protege. Saints host Chelsea tomorrow and Puel said: “There are possibilities for them both to dribble.
“They both make a difference with the ball” “They both make a difference with the ball, going past four or five players perhaps, but with different qualities. “Eden Hazard is a strong little man with strength in his legs and it’s difficult to move him. He has the capacity and the ability to dribble and resist all the defenders. “Boufal is light and has the capacity to dribble, but without this strong body - but he can have fantastic moments also.”
Puel is well aware of the problems Hazard can cause his side with the Belgium star having scored four in his four starts for club and country. And he remembers the first time he was wowed by him. Puel said: “I know Eden very well. I started him in the first team at Lille when he was just 16. He was a young player without structure but with the same qualities. “He was a fantastic player and stayed a fantastic player and you can see this. He takes pleasure in football.

Shay Given tips Fraser Forster to replace Joe Hart as England’s No.1
Show/hide article…
Fraser Forster is the hardest worker in football, claims Stoke goalkeeper Shay Given, but the Southampton shot stopper may have to bide his time before usurping Joe Hart with England.
The 28-year-old recovered from a serious knee injury but is back to top form for Claude Puel’s side.
Forster worked with Forster during their time at Newcastle and the former Ireland No.1 admits his development slightly surprised the staff on Tyneside.
“I worked with him for a few years at and he was nearly too big,” admitted Given to BBC 5 live. "He was like 6 ft 5 in at 16 [years old] basically and we looked at him like, ‘is he too big?’ He was a bit clumsy with his feet and he was heavy-footed.
Southampton vs Chelsea team news, possible line-ups and more ahead of Premier League clash
“I don’t know anybody who works harder than Fraser Forster every day in training; not just that, in the gym and stuff [too].”
Given believes Forster’s reputation sky rocketed after an incredible display at the Camp Nou against Barcelona whilst playing for Celtic, and tips him to push Joe Hart all the way to be the country’s No.1.
Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk ‘‘could become one of the world’s top-FIVE defenders’’
“He’s proved to so many people how good a goalkeeper he really is,” claimed Given. "He played against Barcelona a few years ago for Celtic and the Barcelona media were calling him the human wall.
“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and he’s pushing Joe really hard. You’re only as good as your last game for your country and to be fair to Joe, he was Man of the Match in his last game, so Fraser might just be waiting a bit longer.”

Southampton v Chelsea: Matt Le Tissier on why the Saints will win on Super Sunday

Southampton v Chelsea: Matt Le Tissier on why the Saints will win on Super Sunday
Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier explains why his former club are more than capable of beating Chelsea on Super Sunday.
The Saints will be looking to extend their fine run of form when Antonio Conte’s men visit St Mary’s - live on Sky Sports 1 HD at 4pm - having held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw last weekend.
Here’s why Le Tiss is confident his former club claim another major scalp…
Southampton have proved they’re absolutely capable of matching any side in the Premier League. We’re very solid defensively, with one of the best centre-back pairings in the Premier League, and going forward we create chances, even against the top sides.
Virgil van Dijk is the perfect player to deal with Diego Costa. He’s got all the right physical attributes to handle him, with strength and pace, and he’s also got the right temperament to not get wound up by him.
He’s been outstanding all season. Maybe he could have done better for Manchester City’s goal in letting Kelechi Iheanacho get the wrong side of him, but you’d be nit picking.
Eden Hazard is probably more of a worry for me than Costa and Cuco Martina will have to have a great game to stem his threat. However, he’ll have plenty of help. Oriol Romeu, Jordy Clasie and Steven Davis will sit in and protect the full-backs, so he’ll get that extra support when Hazard cuts inside onto his right foot.
Nathan Redmond’s movement will be the biggest problem for Conte’s defence if he plays John Terry, David Luiz and Gary Cahill. Dusan Tadic is incredibly skillful and his link-up with Redmond is going to be crucial in causing their defence problems.
It’s going to be a tough afternoon for Charlie Austin though, dealing on his own with three at the back unless we press really high and make it three on three. He’s going to have to play a very unselfish role in closing down their centre-backs.
Some might call it an upset if we win, but we’ve lost one game in the last 10, which was an absolute robbery when we dominated Inter Milan at the San Siro. I hope Chelsea underestimate us as much as the bookies have - 2/1 is a very generous price and I wouldn’t have us as outsiders.

McQueen ready to fight for his Saints place
Show/hide article…
ACADEMY graduate Sam McQueen is hoping that he has impressed Claude Puel sufficiently to compete with Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett when they return from injury.
McQueen was drafted into the Saints team at left-back with first choices Targett and Bertrand out injured.
The 21-year-old, who has been converted from a wide midfielder to a full-back by Puel, has not looked out of his depth and has impressed with a series of mature performances.
And now, after three successive starts, McQueen is reluctant to let go of his place in the team with his rivals nearing a return from the sidelines.
“You just have to worry about what’s right in front of you, but I would hope that I would still stay with the first team and hopefully still get some game time,” he said.
“I need to try and impress as much as I can in the games that I get, so hopefully if I get any more chances I need to do my absolute best.
“I need to get forward as much as I can, defend well and do the things that the manager’s asked.
“I need to try and put myself in a position to be selected. It’s up to him [Puel], but I need to do everything I can to try and put myself forward.”
The Southampton-born man has given his all during a dream run in the team and admits that his “desire” to play is pushing him through the physical aches and pains that come with a hectic run of games.
It all started with a daunting full debut against Inter Milan at the San Siro, before starting his first Premier League game at Manchester City last Sunday.
He then played the full game against Sunderland in the EFL Cup victory on Wednesday night.
“I’m very eager to [impress],” he said. “It’s tough when you’re not used to playing games so regularly.
“It’s all been new to me playing games every three days, with the 23s it’s not so regular.
“It’s been a challenge to make sure I’m ready physically. The desire to do it is what gets you through the physical pain almost.
“I’m doing everything I can to try and impress and to try and keep the manager’s mind.”
Jose Fonte revealed that he had been surprised at how well McQueen, who was a pupil at Mountbatten School in Romsey, has coped with being thrown in the team.
McQueen always backed himself to do well, but says that a big factor in surviving is having the right mentality to thrive in such high-pressured matches.
“I’ve probably surprised myself a little bit,” he said. “I know I’m capable but it’s a mental thing when you step up into first team football.
“There are so many players in the world. There are so many players in academies in England that have got the potential and the ability. The main deciding factor is mentality. Everyone will say that.
“I’ve surprised myself in the way that I’ve been able to deal with it, but ability-wise and technically I know I’ve got the ability and I’ve got that to be able to do it.”

Puel: I wasn’t as talented as Romeu
Show/hide article…
Claude Puel may have played in the same position as Oriol Romeu during his long career, but admits the Spaniard is a more gifted footballer than he was.
Romeu has become a rock for Saints in the defensive midfield role, brilliantly shielding the back four and using his ability on the ball to start attacking moves.
Puel’s 20-year stint at Monaco was as a tough tackling engine room midfielder, but the Saints boss thinks there aren’t too many similarities between him and Romeu.
“He’s more technical,” confessed Puel. “I was a different generation. I played midfield in front of the defence but I had a good recovery of the ball, but now it’s important in modern football to have a player in this position very technical.
“The play for this position it’s important the player can have a good ability to work the ball and to change and to switch it wide and to anticipate the situation.
“It’s important because it’s a part of the team and all the opponents try to make a good pressing because every ball recovery on this play is dangerous for the team.
“It is important for this player to be a good technical player, don’t lose the ball and to start the action with quality.”
He added: “It is the first quality of the player but in this position it is important to protect the defence. It is the role of Oriol with us.
“Oriol I think is very important for the team because I think he finds his good position on the team with this system in front of the defence.
“He has capacities and abilities to recover with the ball and it is important the recovery of the ball. He is very good with the ball.
“He is at the start every time of all our action and he has the capacity to play under pressure and this is very important for me to play good football and allow for the team to keep a good philosophy.”
Puel’s side face a different challenge when Romeu’s former club Chelsea come to St Mary’s tomorrow as Antonio Conte sets his side out with a 3-4-3 formation. However, it isn’t something which concerns Puel.
“We try to train every time to play in the training session and to work different possibilities and to work every time our play with different possibilities, different systems, different teams, different opponents,” he reflected.
“To me there is not a lot of difference because I want my players to have the abilities and the capacity to adapt with all the system, all the players they can play.
“For me it’s the most important and of course different things on the play.
“We showed this possibilities with the video for example before the game, but after all this consideration it is important every time to adapt with good players in different system, but every time the most important for me is our play.”

Claude Puel has had to abandon his careful planning policy to deal with Saints’ mounting injury problems.
The Saints boss has preferred to approach a period of three games in quick succession with a clear plan as to what side he will play in each in order to rotate his squad and keep them fresh for action.
However, with injuries biting hard he is taking it one game at a time.
“It is a problem,” he admitted. “It’s a problem of course when we have injuries because we play with the same players for example and that is dangerous for injuries.
“Or we have to move another player to another place. For example, (Jack) Stephens play right back against Sunderland and his best position is centre back.
“It is a problem but it is important always to find a solution and to try something and for the moment it is ok.
“For the moment all our thoughts is about Chelsea and after the game we can see for Inter Milan.”
One piece of positive news is that Ryan Bertrand could return to the Saints squad to take on his former club Chelsea tomorrow.
The left back has been missing since picking up a hamstring injury in the last international break with England.
With Matt Targett still ruled out with a similar problem, it has left Sam McQueen as the only available left back.
And with Cedric Soares also injured in the right back slot, along with long term absentee Jeremy Pied, it leaves Saints short of full back cover.
Bertrand is touch and go to face Chelsea, but Jay Rodriguez is ruled out after being forced off against Sunderland with dizziness.
Second choice keeper Alex McCarthy is also now sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring problem, putting the emphasis on Fraser Forster to play every match, while Shane Long also remains unavailable.
“There are some players with injuries,” said Puel with a rueful smile.
“Targett, Long, Hesketh, McCarthy now, Rodriguez stayed quiet because he has dizziness and he stay a few days without football and we will see with Bertrand if he can come back on the squad.”
Of Cedric’s injury, Puel updated: “No Cedric Soares for the moment is back running but without touching the ball. We will see for the next week.
“I hope he can come back in the training sessions next week.”
McQueen has played the vast majority of the last four games, meaning Puel would ideally like to take him out of the firing line.
“I don’t know about this,” he said. “We will see the possibility if of course Bertrand can come back on the squad and if he can come back we see if he can start or perhaps later in the game. I don’t know.”
