Premier League frontrunners: Where the slip-up and winning runs lie

Show/hide article…

With just a point separating the top five, the Premier League’s leading lights are already looking ahead to where the gaps could open up in the coming weeks — or close up for those following behind.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes there are five teams in the title race but only one team can take the crown, and of the eight stand-out sides so far only four can fit into the Champions League-qualifying spots.

Manchester City lead the way as it stands, but Arsenal and Liverpool are level on points with the early leaders.

Chelsea and Tottenham follow up a point behind the top three, splitting themselves between the Champions League and Europa League qualifying spots on goal difference.

Everton, Manchester United and Southampton all have high expectations, too.

Here, Sportsmail assesses the pre-Christmas course for those with aspirations of a spot among the Premier League’s top ranks.

Premier League Predictions: Liverpool to stumble, Man United thrashing, Chelsea victory

Show/hide article…

Arsene Wenger’s side are joint top of the table and haven’t lost in 13 games in all competitions while David Moyes is yet to win since taking over on Wearside and the club sit bottom of the Premier League with just two points. The Black Cats have beaten the Gunners once in the league since 2000 and it seems very unlikely they will make that record look any better this weekend. Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez will be far too much for Sunderland to handle. Jose Mourinho’s Man United will be confident after knocking rivals Manchester City out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday and I think they will run rampant at Old Trafford tomorrow. There were signs against City that the Red Devils are close to finding form and I think the clash against Burnley tomorrow could be the turning point. I expect Paul Pogba to run the show with Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic getting on the scoresheet.

“Man City are on a dismal run, in fact Pep Guardiola has never experienced this” Both Middlesbrough and Bournemouth go into the game on the back of impressive 0-0s against Arsenal and Tottenham respectively, so confidence will be high. But Boro are still to win at home this season, while Bournemouth are without a league victory away. Aitor Karanka’s side know they need to start winning at the Riverside and Alvaro Negredo needs to start scoring if they are to have any chance of staying up - and that could well just happen against Bournemouth. Leicester may have improved last time out against Crystal Palace, but last season’s champions simply aren’t good enough to beat Tottenham, who still haven’t lost in the league. Spurs’ last home Premier League game saw them outclass Man City and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them do the same to Claudio Ranieri’s side. The Foxes haven’t won away from home in the Premier League and Jamie Vardy hasn’t scored in the league since September 10. White Hart Lane won’t be the place to change any of that.

Hull ended a run of four defeats on the bounce with a midweek EFL Cup triumph at Bristol City. Meanwhile Watford made it two clean sheets in a row in their 1-0 win over Middlesbrough last week. And although they’ve recently struggled in front of goal, the Hornets should have just about enough to secure all three points at Vicarage Road. City are on a dismal run, in fact Pep Guardiola has never experienced this sort of form in his management career. And travelling to the Hawthorns to take on a resolute West Brom side will not be the sort of game they will enjoy. Tony Pulis has his side well drilled and I think the likes of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling could struggle to make an impact. I’m going for a score draw.

Liverpool are currently 10 games unbeaten and they probably go into the game at Selhurst park as the favourites. But the Reds have struggled against Palace in recent seasons and I don’t expect them to have it all their own way tomorrow. Anfield reject Christian Benteke will be bang up for this one so do don’t be surprised to see him get on the scoresheet. Ronald Koeman’s side have suffered a dip in form in recent weeks but I think they will get back to winning ways against West Ham on Sunday. Romelu Lukaku will prove too hot to handle for the Hammers defence which has shipped 17 goals in just nine Premier League matches this season. Everton will be keen to stay in touch with the title contenders at the top of the table and should get all three points at Goodison Park.

Half-term Premier League grades: Alan McInally gives his verdict

Show/hide article…

It’s half-term in England and Sky Sports pundit Alan McInally has given out grades to the Premier League clubs.

It’s good news for fans of high-flying Manchester City and Arsenal, while Bournemouth also score a top mark, despite currently sitting 10th in the table.

However, West Ham and Sunderland are bottom of the class after frustrating starts to the season…

Man City are maybe not at the best level they’ve been, the best we expect, but they’re top of the league. It would be very difficult to mark them low. They don’t look as fluently dangerous in terms of goal scoring - they didn’t have a shot on target when they lost to Manchester United in the EFL Cup - and that’s a problem. But I’m still going to give them an ‘A’ because they’re top of the league.

I’ve given Arsenal an ‘A-’ for the simple reason they’re not quite top. I think they’ll be good this season, I really do. I think they’ve looked more dangerous. I know people are quick to get on the bandwagon and have a go at them because they’re always there or thereabouts and then they fall short. I’m not a big Theo Walcott fan but he’s been sensational. I expect that from him all the time. If he does that they’ll go from A- to A+ later this season.

It’s been a good start to the season for Liverpool. There’s more expected of them this year for the simple reason of Jurgen Klopp, his signings and he’s been there a year now. The way they play is exciting and they’re probably one of the best teams to watch in the Premier League. Maybe they should get a higher mark than a ‘B’ - but I think there’s more to come from Liverpool. I’ll have time to given them an ‘A’ later in the season!

The last couple of results have been brilliant for Chelsea. The 4-0 against Manchester United was sensational and I thought they were brilliant against Leicester and Antonio Conte is getting to a formation he likes. Is he going with four at the back or is he going with this way he played with Italy, which is three defenders and wing backs? I think they’ve looked quite good like that. At this moment in time it is most definitely still a work in progress so I can’t give them any better than a ‘B’.

I’m going to go as low as ‘C’ for Tottenham because I thought this would be a big season for Spurs and I think they’ve struggled a little. There’s no question the injury to Harry Kane has been a problem and they’ve struggled in front of goal a little more. They’ve got one of my favourite players in Christian Eriksen who I adore but I know he’s got more in the locker, as has Moussa Dembele. I expect them to be back in the top four this year. But at this moment in time I expect more from them - and I’m sure the Spurs fans do as well.

I’ve got to give Everton a good mark. I’m not that surprised by what they’re doing, I think they’re a good team. Especially at Goodison Park. I think the manager Ronald Koeman has made a massive difference. I know a few guys who work at Everton and Koeman has changed the attitude at the club fantastically. And there’s room for improvement.

Manchester United should be getting an ‘A’ every day of the week but at the moment I’m giving them an above average C. I’m only giving them an above average C because they managed to keep themselves in the League Cup. Their Premier League form has been poor. Jose Mourinho has struggled with his best team, Wayne Rooney is out of form, his defence is all over the shop - and one of the biggest problems at United is he needs to get his defence rock solid. He doesn’t have that at the moment and I can’t give them any more than a ‘C’. United - the biggest club in the world - have got to be better.

I want to give them an ‘A’ because of the position they’re in at the moment and the football they’ve played has been excellent. I’ll go ‘B’ because they’re still sort of mid-table but I don’t think for one minute they’ll finish there. I think they’ll have a wonderful season. I think Claude Puel has surprised a lot of people and taking Eric Black as his assistant has been a good move because Puel doesn’t necessarily know everything about the English game. Considering the players they’ve sold in the last few years, and for them still to be playing the football they are is fantastic. They’ve been super.

As we go down the league it would be easy to give people 'D’s and 'E’s and 'F’s but you’ve got to remember where they’ve come from and what they’re doing. They have a new manager in Walter Mazzarri and with Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney, a lot is pinned on their performances to make sure Watford finish high up the division. They’ve done okay.

We’re down to 10th but I’m giving them an ‘A’ for the way they’ve played. They’ve been brilliant. I’m probably over bias because I think Eddie Howe is a very good manager but they’ve bought incredibly well in the summer. Callum Wilson is a big player for them and was injured last year, Josh King came in for Junior Stanislas at the weekend, Harry Arter has been excellent, and how Howe managed to get Wilshere to the club… I’ve got to give him an A. Good to watch.

I’ve been really disappointed in Crystal Palace. I don’t know whether that’s because every time I see them I expect more from the likes of Wilfried Zaha. I know Yannick Bolasie has gone but Jason Puncheon is a good player and needs to do more. And I’ve been disappointed in the way they’ve defended, they’ve been shipping goals. I know they spent a lot of money on Christian Benteke who has scored three goals for them but in this moment in time, with the way they’re playing, they’re very unpredictable and I’m giving them a ‘D’.

I should still be giving them an A+ for what they did last year. Every time I look at the Champions League on a Tuesday or Wednesday you think “Leicester are there”! Their performances in the Champions League have been A+. But their performances in the Premier League haven’t been great, so I’ve got to go ‘C’. That’s average in comparison to last year. N’Golo Kante has been a big loss and Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, Marc Albrighton and Danny Drinkwater haven’t managed to get to the level they were last year. Maybe unsurprisingly. Defensively they’ve not been good enough.

I think Tony Pulis is one of the managers in the league that doesn’t get the credit he should get. He is working with a squad of players that he doesn’t invest a lot of money in, he’s got a player in Saido Berahino that he wants to be better but he’s not even playing and there are a few improbables and imponderables that he has to deal with. I want to give them a ‘B’ because they’re always going to be there or thereabouts and with him at the club I don’t see them being relegated. But I can’t give them more than a ‘C’ because of where they are right now. But they’ll cause problems for a lot of teams during the season.

I’m giving Burnley a ‘B’ because they’ve already had some incredible results. They were only just touched off by Arsenal at home, they beat Everton, they beat Liverpool… Sean Dyche continues to defy the odds. It would be easier to get to this level and say they should be higher up in the league but should they? I don’t think so. Normally the league will determine where you finish compared to the amount of money you spend. In that case Burnley should probably be bottom. They’re not. They’ve done brilliantly well.

I’ve given West Ham an ‘E’ and that’s the worst I’m going to give any team. Disappointed. Dimitri Payet is fantastic but hasn’t done it yet. They’ve struggled as a team, struggled with injuries, Slaven Bilic is probably banging his head at the moment. They had a wonderful result against Chelsea in the EFL Cup, but I thought this would be a season for West Ham - after last year - that they’d really cause problems. They haven’t. It’s not been good. The stadium continues to be a weight around their neck and it’s been a poor start.

The last few results have been better for Stoke but I’d have thought they’d have started quicker in the Premier League. I would have guaranteed in the first 10 games Stoke would have shipped seven, eight, nine goals instead of the 16 they have. They’ve conceded too many goals. They should be doing a lot better.

It’s a harsh mark because Middlesbrough have been away from the Premier League for a long time and Aitor Karanka has managed to bring in some players to make a difference but scoring goals has been a problem for them. Their home form - which I thought would be stronger - has been poor. I like Boro but unless they get their finger out they’ll be slipping to ‘E’ and ‘F’.

It took them an age to give the job to Mike Phelan and I think that brought a little uncertainty. As well as the season started, they’ve struggled since and I think it will be a struggle. They only had seven or eight players at pre-season training and were struggling in terms of a squad. It’s not a surprise but performances only merit a ‘C’.

There has been a big transition in the football club, with new managers, players going who they might have wanted to keep, so this is one of the hardest seasons Swansea have had in a long time. I didn’t agree when they let Garry Monk go, I thought he did a decent job to keep them easily in the Premier League, but because of changes they’ve had I think it’s really unsettled the club. Bob Bradley is the new manager, and they’re hoping for new fortunes. But I don’t see it.

David Moyes has come in but it seems every time we talk about Sunderland, we’re saying if Jermain Defoe doesn’t score they can’t win. If you’re relying on one man in the Premier League to keep you there, it’s not good enough. Moyes knows he has a big problem on his hands. And they will be ‘E’ until they get more players in during January. They have to support the manager, give him the funds - if they don’t they’ll be bottom for most of the season and they’ll be ‘E-’!

Southampton v Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal will be hopeful of starting against Chelsea after a goalscoring full debut in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Jay Rodriguez suffered concussion in the win over Sunderland and is a doubt along with former Blue Ryan Bertrand.

Chelsea will be without injured midfielder Cesc Fabregas, but defender Branislav Ivanovic is available.

Kurt Zouma is getting closer to a return from a long-term knee injury after playing for the development side.

Steve Wilson: "Chelsea are the only side to have beaten Southampton at St Mary’s in a league game in 2016.

"Saints have not only avoided defeat since that February reverse - they have won their last five home games in league and cup, conceding only once.

"Claude Puel’s introduction to English football may have warranted fewer column inches that of Antonio Conte - but he deserves at least as much credit.

"Conte’s Chelsea looked well capable of beating anyone last Sunday as they swept aside Manchester United. Their current run of three league wins without conceding is their best in almost two seasons.

“Someone’s recent record of success will have to give.”

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte: "There are five teams who are very close but we shouldn’t look at the table, we must be focused on our work on the pitch.

“It’s too early to talk about the table or the title. We must improve game by game and trust in the work, that’s the most important thing.”

I think Chelsea are capable of doing something no team has done so far in seven matches this season, which is beating Southampton at St Mary’s.

Claude Puel: It will be hard for Southampton to repeat success

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has acknowledged it will be difficult for Southampton to emulate last season’s sixth-placed finish with the Premier League big hitters on form this term.

With Chelsea and Liverpool struggling, and Manchester United far from convincing, Southampton – under then-coach Ronald Koeman – claimed their highest-ever Premier League finish, setting a new club points record and qualifying for the Europa League.

This term, it was Southampton who made a shaky start, picking up just two points from their opening four Premier League matches under Puel. Though they have since pieced together a five-game unbeaten run to climb into eighth place, the Frenchman told L’Equipe a repeat of last season will be tough.

“Everton are also better equipped than us. We have fewer resources and have to regenerate every year, I knew that when I came here. We sold [Sadio] Mane, [Graziano] Pelle and [Victor] Wanyama, three of the key players from last season,” Puel, whose Nice side took a surprise fourth place in Ligue 1 last term, said.

“During the last three seasons, we have finished eighth, seventh and sixth in the Premier League. Sixth is amazing! We benefitted from the poor form of Chelsea, Liverpool and United, who stayed out of the running and we finished strongly. This season, all the big clubs have started well, they’re going to be in contention.”

After succeeding the Everton-bound Koeman in the summer, Puel appeared to have graver problems than merely seeking to upset the Premier League’s established order once again.

Home draws with Watford and Sunderland along with defeats at Manchester United and Arsenal were all Puel had to show from his opening quartet of games in charge.

He said he was a victim of Koeman’s success at St. Mary’s, which meant European football had to be squeezed into the club’s fixture list and required a change of strategy that left some of the squad unconvinced.

“The team had played well under Koeman by defending deep and playing on the counter-attack. As we were going to play every three days and wouldn’t be able to go up and down the pitch all game every game, I wanted to base our play on possession and control,” Puel said.

“It was a cultural change. In training, it worked, but in matches, with the tension, the players quickly resorted to what they knew how to do. We have a lot of technical players whose game is suited to that style, others were sceptical. I wanted to persist with it, they wanted results, so that took some handling.”

Everything you need to know about Southampton vs Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu: The La Masia graduate seems to have finally found a club where he is settled and playing regularly. His spell at Stamford Bridge was frustrating and he will be looking to get one back on his old employers this weekend.

The last five matches between these two teams has failed to yield a victory for the home side.

Pedro: His career at Chelsea has been stop-start, but his last two performances at home to Leicester and Man United demonstrated that he has a future under Antonio Conte and can be clinical when called upon.

Sunderland will equal the worst PL start if they lose to Arsenal

Show/hide article…

David Moyes and Sunderland are on the brink of equalling an unwanted Premier League record as they prepare to face Arsenal this weekend.

The Black Cats have picked up just two points from their first nine games of the season, meaning defeat by Arsene Wenger’s Gunners will ensure their place alongside Manchester City, in 1995-96, as the worst team in league history through the opening 10 matches.

But does a bad start always result in relegation? Are Sunderland destined to be one of the worst teams in the history of the league?

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at the five worst teams of the Premier League era and how they fared during their opening 10 matches.

Derby County - 2007-08 - relegated with 11 points - six points from first 10 games

The Rams were always destined to struggle once they secured promotion through the Championship play-offs, but nobody could have anticipated just how heavily Paul Jewell’s side would flop.

Six points from their first 10 games did little to suggest they would do anything other than scrap to avoid relegation, but when they claimed just five from their remaining 28 matches they secured their spot as the worst team in Premier League history.

Their one and only victory came within those first 10 games, as Kenny Miller’s goal secured a 1-0 victory over Newcastle, but that was as good as it got for a side which conceded 89 goals and scored just 20.

They’ve not been back in the big time since.

Sunderland - 2005-06 - relegated with 15 points - five points from first 10 games

Victory over Arsenal would only serve to help Moyes and the current Black Cats match their own worst start to a Premier League season.

That came in 2005-06 when Mick McCarthy’s side won only one of their opening 10 games, with two draws taking their total to five.

Sunderland stuck largely with the side which won promotion the previous season, with the likes of Jon Stead, Nyron Nosworthy, Gary Breen and Dean Whitehead never really standing a chance. They signed Rory Delap ahead of the season, but the Ireland international had yet to discover his ability at long throws by this point.

McCarthy was sacked before the end of the campaign, which ultimately led to the beginning of Roy Keane’s management career.

Aston Villa - 2015-16 - relegated with 17 points - four points from first 10 games

Villa’s dire 2015-16 campaign is certainly fresh in the memory and proved to be a new low for a club which flirted with the drop for the four preceding seasons.

Both Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde were sacked as the former European champions lurched towards the relegation trap door.

The writing was on the wall early as they claimed just four points from their first 10 games, despite winning at Bournemouth on the opening day, with the fans finally put out of their misery in April after a defeat away at Manchester United.

Relegation was the exclamation point on a season which saw the Villa supporters disconnected from their players more than ever before, highlighted by Joleon Lescott ‘accidently’ tweeting an image of his £121,000 Mercedes following an embarrassing 6-0 loss away at Liverpool.

Sunderland - 2002-03 - relegated with 19 points - eight points from first 10 games

Another entry for Sunderland in this hall of shame, but after 10 matches things were looking reasonably promising.

Following a £20million spending spree, which saw Tore-Andre Flo, Marcus Stewart, Mart Poom, Stephen Wright and Matt Piper arrive at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats picked up eight points from their opening 10 matches.

But Peter Reid was fired and replaced by the duo of Howard Wilkinson and Steve Cotterill, who then won just twice in 20 league games. Their lowest moment came in February of 2003, when their side scored three own goals in just eight minutes during a 3-1 home defeat by Charlton.

McCarthy was appointed in March amid a run of 12 straight-defeats which ended the season, which saw the Wearsiders well and truly plummet to relegation.

Watford - 1999-00 - relegated with 24 points - nine points from first 10 games

Watford reached the top flight in 1999 on the back of two successive promotions, but the step up to the top level proved a jump too far.

Managed by former England manager Graham Taylor, the Hornets recorded stunning 1-0 wins over Liverpool and Chelsea during the early weeks of the season, thanks to goals from Tommy Mooney and Alan Smart, but that’s as good as it got.

They won just three more matches following the victory over Chelsea, as they went back to the First Division to rebuild.

The Hornets are now in their third Premier League spell and currently sit ninth after nine games.

Oriol Romeu dresses up for Halloween ahead of Chelsea clash

Show/hide article…

He’s facing his old club on Halloween weekend and Oriol Romeu has already got himself in the mood to give Chelsea a fright.

The Southampton midfielder faces the Blues on Sunday afternoon when the latter visit St Mary’s.

And ahead of that game, off the pitch, Romeu showcased his designs to give Antonio Conte’s side a scare.

The 25-year-old took time out from training to be painted as a skeleton for Sunday’s matchday magazine.

Romeu took to Instagram to reveal a sneak peak of the Saints front cover on Thursday.

#Halloween is coming… #SaintsFC,’ he wrote as the caption of the social media post.

Romeu joined Chelsea in 2011 from Barcelona but endured a disappoiting four years at Stamford Bridge. He made just 22 Premier League outings under four different managers over four years, which also included overcoming a serious knee injury.

However, the Spaniard has been revitalised on the south coast since his £5million switch at the start of last season.

Romeu has featured in all nine of their league outings so far and will be hoping a tenth, if selected, will be a victorious outcome on Sunday.

EFL Cup release official team of the week… Liverpool starlet makes the cut

Show/hide article…

THE official EFL Cup team of the week has been released after the midweek fixtures.

There was plenty of exciting action in the competition on Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

Manchester United beat Manchester City at Old Trafford, while West Ham overcame London rivals Chelsea to make it into the next round.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino got a chance to show off some of their youngsters in their match.
