Report: Manchester City 1-1 Saints

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond struck his third goal of the season and his second in as many games on 27 minutes to give Saints a well-earned lead at the interval, after seeing John Stones’ effort rightly ruled out for offside.

But City emerged resurgent in the second-half, and substitute Kelechi Iheanacho made it 11 goals from 17 shots on target in the Premier League to deny Claude Puel’s men a first win at the Etihad since 2004.

Another positive saw Sofiane Boufal get his first experience of the Premier League as he replaced Dušan Tadić on 72 minutes.

Puel made one change to the starting line-up from the 3-1 victory over Burnley, with Sam McQueen making his first Premier League start in place of the injured Matt Targett.

The hosts drew 1-1 with Everton in their last domestic outing and Pep Guardiola made three changes to his side from that fixture.

Vincent Kompany returned as captain in place of Nicolas Otamendi for his first start since April, while Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Aguero replaced Gael Clichy and Iheanacho.

City’s first foray into the Southampton area came when David Silva collected the ball after Aguero’s driving run, but his dinked cross was collected well Fraser Forster.

For all the City possession in the opening exchanges, Saints looked resolute and the first opening came when Fernandinho burst down the right, but his cross was too heavy for the onrushing Raheem Sterling at the far post.

As well as absorbing any threat in a tight encounter, Puel’s men looked dangerous on the break, and Claudio Bravo was forced into action for the first time when he got down to intercept Tadić’s low centre from the left.

The Serbian international was involved again moments later, when he switched the play to Nathan Redmond, who saw his cut back fired over by Jordy Clasie from the edge of the box.

On 27 minutes, they had their reward though as Redmond raced on to a misplaced backpass from John Stones, before rounding Bravo and keeping his composure to give Saints the lead.

Stones thought he had made amends for his error four minutes later, but after converting from Kevin de Bruyne’s free-kick at the far post, he saw his effort ruled out for offside.

In a bid to change the game, Guardiola introduced Iheanacho at the break to replace de Bruyne and they started the second-half brighter.

As pressure started to build, Sterling saw his dangerous cross towards the back post narrowly evade a stretching Leroy Sane.

Shortly after that chance, Sané did help break the resistance when his pass found Iheanacho in the box, who made no mistake from close range to level proceedings.

Momentum began to gather for the hosts, and Forster did well to turn away Ilkay Gundogan’s low drive from just inside the area.

With 20 minutes remaining, Tadić made way as Boufal was introduced for his first taste of Premier League action, following a debut against Internazionale in the Europa League.

And as the game became increasingly absorbing, Boufal did brilliantly to tee up Charlie Austin, who saw his powerful effort beaten away by Bravo.

Jesus Navas and Nolito were both introduced as City looked to avoid going five games without a victory.

But Saints showed their defensive steel once more to preserve a hard-earned point.

Graeme Souness insists Southampton goal was not John Stones’ fault

Show/hide article…

The blame for Nathan Redmond’s goal for Southampton against Manchester City lies with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and not John Stones, insists Graeme Souness.

The Saints took the lead midway through the first half after Bravo threw the ball to Kevin De Bruyne, who exchanged passes with Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan, before reaching Stones on the edge of the 18-yeard box.

The Englishman’s wayward pass back to his goalkeeper was intercepted by Redmond, who rounded Bravo to finish into an empty net, but Souness believes it is the Chilean who should take the bulk of the blame.

“My argument with that goalkeeper is, what does he expect [De Bruyne] to do apart from lay it back? I think that’s a poor choice for the goalkeeper to make,” he told Sky Sports.

“He’s throwing the ball out, 25 yards from his goal, knowing the player is getting closed down by two of the opposition. It’s a bad choice.”

Bravo has had a tough start to life at the Etihad after dropping a clanger on his debut to allow Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score, before seeing red against former club Barcelona on Wednesday for handling the ball outside the area.

Souness’ fellow pundits Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry disagreed however, and said he should have looked forwards and towards the wing, rather than back to Bravo.

“John Stones has to open his foot and see if he can play with his winger. He decides to pass the ball back… mistake, goal,” said Henry.

“It’s mistake after mistake and we’ve been saying that for a very long time. If they want to win the league, they have to erase that.”

Carragher added: “I think John Stones has got himself in a situation. He’s not happy with Vincent Kompany. He’s stepped a yard forward.

“Even if he gives the ball to Vincent Kompany, he would be in trouble. He’s stepping forward to say to John Stones, give that to the goalkeeper. [Stones] thinks Kompany is there, he looks away. It’s John Stones, it’s a really poor mistake. Just use your goalkeeper.

“Graeme, it’s not the goalkeeper’s fault. De Bruyne should be able to deal with that.”

Ref Watch: Chelsea’s David Luiz lucky, Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko deserved red

Show/hide article…

Should David Luiz and Moussa Sissoko have seen red? Were Danny Rose and Erik Lamela lucky not to be sent off? Ref Watch is back to debate another selection of controversial decisions from some of the weekend’s Premier League matches.

Former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher has been in the Sky Sports News HQ studio to analyse a number of contentious calls from weekend.

From potential red cards to offside goals and even twerking, we have it all covered in this week’s edition.

INCIDENT: David Luiz is booked for a tackle on Marouane Fellaini.

SCENARIO: Luiz only shown yellow even though the challenge was with his studs and caught Fellaini on his knee.

DERMOT SAYS: If the referee sees the angle we have seen, he would definitely show a red card because he has shown six studs, caught him high on the knee and the ball has gone. Martin Atkinson is the other side and has seen the high boot. He thought he caught him, but didn’t see the seriousness. I thought it was a red card. If you go in that high with studs showing, you run that risk.

INCIDENT: Pedro booked for celebrating in the crowd after scoring.

SCENARIO: Having given Chelsea the lead after just 30 seconds, Pedro jumps into the crowd to celebrate and is shown a yellow card.

DERMOT SAYS: You have this mandate that if you enter the crowd, the referees are now duty bound to issue a yellow because of the danger of people coming forward. They don’t want to do it but they have to do it. It’s the worst start for a referee, a player booked after one minute.

INCIDENT: Moussa Sissoko escapes with no punishment after elbowing Harry Arter.

SCENARIO: With the ball out of play, Sissoko catches Arter with an elbow to the face. The referee appears to have a good view of the situation but does not take any action. Sissoko has since been charged with violent conduct by the FA.

DERMOT SAYS: If the referee hasn’t seen it then it’s best to take no action than go halfway and issue a yellow card and close the door. The fact he has said he has seen nothing allows the FA to follow the procedure. Seeing it and recognising it is two different things. He has seen the players clash and hasn’t seen Sissoko elbow Arter in the eye.

INCIDENT: Erik Lamela not shown a second yellow card for a lunging tackle.

SCENARIO: Having already been booked, Lamela is not sent off for a foul on Dan Gosling.

DERMOT SAYS: It’s not a particularly bad tackle. He actually plays the ball one-footed. We have to be careful. Just because a player has a yellow card, you have to understand that the next tackle isn’t going to be a red. There is a stepping process and it still counts when you are on a yellow card. It’s a myth that if a player is on a yellow then the next tackle he is going to go. If you send a player off for that, you have set the tolerance so low that any tackle after that is going to be a yellow card. You need to have a balance and that’s a balance for me.

INCIDENT: Danny Rose not shown second yellow for foul.

SCENARIO: Like Lamela, Rose is already booked and gets away without a red card after fouling Josh King.

DERMOT SAYS: It’s a small foul. I can’t see how you can send a player off for that. It’s a not a yellow card in isolation. It hasn’t hurt somebody or stopped a promising attack because he’s not in control of the ball, so I can’t see how you can send a player off.

SCENARIO: When Reid hits his shot from outside the box, a West Ham player appears to be in an offside position and in front of the goalkeeper. Sunderland manager David Moyes says it was offside.

DERMOT SAYS: I would never in a million years be an assistant referee because I would never have got this right. It looks clearly offside, but he is not. Cheikhou Kouyate is offside but that doesn’t impact play. The shot comes in, Jonathan Calleri is onside, and it’s an amazing decision by Keith Stroud, who stepped in only an hour before kick-off to be the assistant.

INCIDENT: John Stones has goal ruled out for offside.

SCENARIO: Stones heads in from free-kick but it’s disallowed for offside against Sergio Aguero at the near post.

DERMOT SAYS: I thought it was big mistake on first viewing but seeing the replay all credit to the assistant Simon Bennett, because Aguero is offside and he goes to flick the ball. Stones was onside but the call is absolutely spot on.

INCIDENT: Xherdan Shaqiri booked after the final whistle for clashing with Sam Clucas.

SCENARIO: Shaqiri pushes Clucas and then grabs him around the throat, but is only shown a yellow card.

DERMOT SAYS: Without doubt he is running a risk. If it’s considered with malice, excessive force or violent conduct he runs the risk of a red card. The nearest person to him is the assistant referee and he has got to make that judgement. He has said no, but he is lucky. I would be surprised if any referee sees a player put a hand on another player’s throat and doesn’t issue a red card.

INCIDENT: Scott Arfield is booked and then avoids a red card after two further fouls.

SCENARIO: Arfield fouls Gareth Barry twice and does not get booked. He then goes on to score Burnley’s winner.

DERMOT SAYS: This is interesting because earlier I spoke about the stepping process. The referee called Ben Mee - who must have been charged with hearing these decisions with the captain Tom Heaton in goal - and it’s good that everybody can see now that the referee has taken action with a warning. The second one is a nothing foul, just a foul.

INCIDENT: Kei Kamara is booked for twerking after scoring.

DERMOT SAYS: I didn’t even know what ‘twerking’ meant! I wouldn’t have known it was a yellow card because I wouldn’t have known what it was for!

McQueen: We showed our strength

Show/hide article…

Just three days after being denied a result their performance deserved in the San Siro, Saints produced another fine display, at Etihad Stadium, and this time came away with a point, after a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

McQueen, who was making his first Premier League start – following his debut in the competition a week earlier, in the 3-1 win over Burnley, and starting away to Inter in the Europa League – was pleased to have headed home with something.

"It’s obviously a tough place to come, but going 1-0 up is a huge thing here, and it’s down to you once you get that opportunity to try to defend the lead,” he said.

“I think we did well with that and did well to defend that point, but we’ll be a bit disappointed that we didn’t keep the clean sheet, which we’ve been so good at this season, and come away with three points.

"It’s always going to be a tough test for anyone that comes here, as everyone knows, so for us it was challenging, especially with the game on Thursday.

“We didn’t have too long to recover, so they were probably fresher than we were, but we’ve got an unbelievable squad, with good strength and depth, so we can rotate and, as the manager says, everyone can play, and play to a good standard, and has got quality.

“It was tough for us, but defensively I thought we were very good and we’ve got a good team shape and that’s not just the back four – it’s midfielders, all the way up to the strikers doing their job as well. So we’ve got a good team that works together as a unit and has got good relationships, so it’s been good.”
