Stat Pack: Manchester City vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Ahead of Southampton’s trip to the Etihad Stadium, we take a look at some of the key pre-match statistics.

Dusan Tadic has created 28 chances in the Premier League this season, more than any other player,

Southampton have collected 51 points in 2016, two more than Manchester City have in the calendar year (49).

Saints last victory against City at the Etihad came in April 2004, when Paul Sturrock’s side won 3-1 thanks to goals from Kevin Phillips (2) and James Beattie.

Shane Long has scored four Premier League goals against Manchester City, only against Aston Villa does he have more (6).

Sergio Aguero hasn’t gone three Premier League games without a goal since December 2015.

Saints head to the Etihad in search of three consecutive away clean sheets in the top-flight for the first time since February.

Pep Guardiola hasn’t gone three games without a league win since the end of the 2014/15 season (three losses with Bayern after they had won the league).

Guardiola defiant despite prospect of equalling worst run as manager

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola is determined to get Manchester City back to winning ways at the expense of Southampton.

City’s midweek humbling by Barcelona in the Champions League extended their winless run to four games.

It is an unfamiliar scenario for manager Guardiola and another disappointing result as Southampton visit in the Premier League on Sunday would equal the worst run of his career.

Only once has former Barca and Bayern Munich boss Guardiola gone five games without a win, at the Nou Camp more than seven years ago.

Guardiola said: 'Managers in other parts of the club have to think short and long term but the (team) managers day by day. We are judged on what happens today, so I’m thinking about Southampton.

‘Of course we have to win because it is four times without a win and we need that. But, at the same time, we were able to win 10 times in a row, so we are now able win four, five or six times.’

Southampton were also involved in European action in the week, losing 1-0 to Inter Milan at San Siro. Until then Saints had been enjoying a good run, going seven games unbeaten, and Guardiola has been impressed by what he has seen of them.

He said: 'I saw the game against Inter Milan. Football is unbelievable because they played amazingly, much better than Inter, and Inter won. Inter just shot once and won.

'Southampton created six, seven clear chances and didn’t win. They lost but I was really impressed.

‘People talk about what a good team they are. I saw in this game and a little bit of another game how good they are. It will be tough.’

The 4-0 loss in Barcelona has seen some of Guardiola’s methods questioned. Notably, their determination to play out from the back came unstuck when goalkeeper Claudio Bravo blundered after coming out of his area and got himself sent off.

But Guardiola has defended his approach and his players also seem unwavering in their belief.

Midfielder Fernandinho said: 'We know exactly what we are doing, the style of game. We are playing good, everyone is confident.

'The last four games we didn’t win but these things can happen in football.

If you see the last game at home against Everton, they shot twice and scored a goal. Sometimes you cannot explain football.’

Sam McQueen speaks out over Gareth Bale comparisons

Show/hide article…

Sam McQueen is trying to put thoughts of following in the footsteps of Wayne Bridge, Gareth Bale and Luke Shaw to the back of his mind and make a name for himself.

Southampton look to have churned out another promising left-back in 21 year-old local lad McQueen.

In the last 20 years Wayne Bridge, Bale and Shaw – McQueen’s former youth team pal – have all come through the Saints academy and gone on to bigger things.

McQueen, 21, only made his third appearance for the club – and first start – in the iconic San Siro against Inter Milan on Thursday after benefitting from the club’s left-back shortage.

But his nerveless and confident display belied his inexperience and marked him out as yet another left-footed one to watch.

He said: “Southampton do have a history of producing left backs. But I don’t want to think too much about that.

“It is interesting but I will do everything I can. It is a position I enjoy now but I won’t focus on other people I just focus on what I have to do. Everyone is a different player regardless of the position.”

He said: “I had played there before but the manager came in and saw that perhaps that is where I was suited.

“It was in the first session. Ryan Bertrand was out on international duty, so doing a game with two teams you need a second left back so I filled in.

“I am going to do what the manager tells me and it has worked out. I am enjoying it.”

McQueen’s introduction to first-team football is set to continue with another big game at Manchester City but he remains unfazed.

He said: “I will be excited again. Everything has snowballed a bit and long may it continue.”

Puel: City are the ‘top’ team in the Premier League, despite tough run

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel insists Manchester City remain the team to beat in the Premier League.

City made a storming start to the season but have faltered of late with a four-game winless run culminating in Wednesday’s 4-0 Champions League defeat to a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona.

But Puel, whose team were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Inter Milan in the Europa League a day later, refutes suggestions that now is the best time to be facing Pep Guardiola’s wobbling side.

‘I think Manchester played a good game, a good style of game against Barcelona,’ he said. 'For me there was no big difference between the two teams, apart from one player, Messi, who made the difference.

'But I saw a very good team at the start against Barcelona with quality, a good collective and good players.

'If they can do good work against us it’s important for us to think and prepare. Just two days between the games is very difficult and Manchester have had more time to recover.

'It’s difficult to play against Manchester City, or Barcelona, because they like to have the ball, they have quality. It’s difficult to defend against.

'It’s the challenge for us on Sunday to find the solution, but not just to defend. It’s important to play and give problems to this team. It’s important to play our football.

‘We have played good football since the start of the season. Will will see against City because City are for me, the top, so it’s a good challenge for us to see our progress in the Premier League.’

Sunday’s trip to the Etihad will be the second time Puel has come up against Guardiola - almost eight years ago as manager of Lyon he took on the Spaniard’s Barca side in the Champions League.

Lyon secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg but Barcelona won the tie 6-3 on aggregate and went on to beat Manchester United in the final.

‘It was the start of his managerial career but it was a fantastic performance,’ recalled Puel.

'We got a draw at home and in the return Barcelona were fantastic, it was not possible for us to play.

'The technical skills of the players and their recovery of the ball was fantastic.

'The following seasons Barcelona were even better. He changed the philosophy of their play.

'For the moment Manchester City are not at the same level. Obviously it will take time for Guardiola but we can see since the beginning of the season a good team.

‘For me they can win the championship because they have the best collective in the Premier League and can progress throughout the year.’

U18 Report: Southampton 2-2 Leicester

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Under-18s were pegged back to a 2-2 draw against Leicester City late on at Staplewood.

Saints led 2-0 at half time with Will Smallbone and Michael Obafemi on target inside the opening 20 minutes as the hosts made a flying start to the contest.

It was a young U18s team as over half of the starting eleven were first year scholars who sought a return to getting on the scoresheet after drawing a blank in each of their last two games.

But while they had been resolute at the other end recently, Saints were denied a first win in four games when Leicester substitutes Tom Fielding and Harrison Myring each found a way through to snatch a point.

The hosts started the game four points ahead of their opponents, and after getting the match under way, they were ahead inside a minute of play.

A strong break forward from Siph Mdlalose down the right saw him square the ball to Will Smallbone who stabbed the ball high into the net from inside the six yard box to give Craig Fleming’s men a perfect start.

The positive opening from Saints showed no signs of slowing, with Christoph Klarer heading over from Smallbone’s corner, before the home side doubled their lead on 18 minutes.

Another fine flowing move started in midfield and ended with Connor Langan’s low cross smashed high into the net by striker Michael Obafemi on his first start of the season.

As Saints sought to extend their lead, Mdlalose took aim from distance, but saw his curling effort go high and wide of the right post.

Leicester threatened to get back into it with Kairo Edwards-John seeing his shot deflected out for a corner. The resulting set-piece saw Kyle Gruno put a header wide.

The Foxes’ number nine Elliott Webber also fired over as the visitors offered a few reminders of their danger on the break, but Saints held their two-goal lead going in at half time.

Leicester brought on Harrison Myring for the second 45 minutes and had the first chance of the half when Cal Templeton warmed the hands of Adam Parkes.

The Saints ‘keeper was called into action again to deny Kairo Edwards-John as the visitors were thwarted a chance of getting back into the game.

At the other end, Mdlalose set up Archie Thomas for a shot which went wide, while Obafemi had a great chance to add to his tally for the afternoon, but placed his effort beyond the far post.

Substitute Tom Fielding set up a grandstand finish when he curled in a fine goal from Christoph Klarer’s clearance on the edge of the box with just over ten minutes remaining.

And Saints were pegged back when fellow Leicester substitute Harrison Myring reacted quickly inside the area to clip a deflected shot beyond Parkes to rescue a point for the visitors.

Boufal pleased to make Saints debut

Show/hide article…

The summer signing replaced Dušan Tadić for the final 20 or so minutes in Milan, as he featured in a Saints shirt for the first time having recovered from injury.

Despite the defeat, Boufal believes Saints can take plenty away from the San Siro, as they get set to take on Man City at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

“It was so special for me, because it was my first game for Southampton and to play that at the San Siro was wonderful,” Boufal told southamptonfc.com.

“I’m not happy totally, because I hoped for victory, but the team played well. We missed opportunities to score the goal.

“For the team we had lots of opportunities and we needed to score one or two goals, but they had a great goalkeeper and we didn’t manage to score.

“I hope next game against Inter we will win the match.”

On his own performance and fitness, Boufal added: “I’m feeling good. I don’t have any pain. It’s my first game for Southampton, so of course there is more to come.

“I need time, because I haven’t played for five months. I need time to get back to full fitness, but I am feeling better every day and I hope to help Southampton this season.”

Fleming: U18s should have killed off Foxes

Show/hide article…

Craig Fleming felt Southampton’s Under-18s should have wrapped up the three points long before Leicester fought back from 2-0 down to take a 2-2 draw at Staplewood.

Saints made a flying start to the game by going 2-0 up inside the opening 20 minutes thanks to goals from Will Smallbone and Michael Obafemi, but Fleming was left to rue a succession of missed chances to increase that lead.

The hosts paid the price as Leicester substitutes Tom Fielding and Harrison Myring each struck inside the final quarter of an hour to rescue what looked an unlikely scoreline during the contest, leaving Saints U18s’ coach to reflect on what felt like a defeat.

“They always feel that way when you’re 2-0 up, dominating the game at 2-0 and very comfortable,” he said.

“But there’s some good lessons for the lads to take there in both boxes. In football they say 2-0 can be a dangerous scoreline and we had three or four one-on-one chances, and if you don’t take them, then you see they get a goal back and you’re thinking, ‘I’ve seen this one quite a few times in my playing career!’

“There were lots of positives from the first half, but second half there are lots of things that we need to work on because we were 2-0 up and cruising.

“We didn’t start the second half particularly great, but we had three, maybe four really good chances and you’ve got to take one of those really.

“I was very disappointed with the way that we started the second half, but we weathered it quite well,” Fleming added.

“We’ve been defensively pretty solid over these past few months so you always feel like we’re going to weather it and dig in there, but once we didn’t take our chances and they got one back you just felt it was coming.”

Saints fielded a team made up of almost entirely first year scholars, and Fleming says the youngsters will learn lessons from the way they lost control of the game.

“They’re young lads and this bunch today were very young,” the U18s coach highlighted. “They’re learning the game and that’s part and parcel of it. They’re not season we professionals who have done it all before so they’re going to make mistakes, but they’ll learn from it and they’ll get better.

“I think we need to get better in possession under pressure. We gave the ball away far too often in the second half which is unlike us really, we’re quite good generally in possession but under pressure we were too open when it got to 2-1 and a bit of panic set in.

“We didn’t keep the ball very well and we’ve got to be more clinical when you get the sort of chances we did, you’ve got to put them away because then the game is finished.”
