Saints ready to compete with City

Show/hide article…

PIERRE-Emile Hojbjerg is confident that Saints can compete against his former Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola and his Premier League leaders Manchester City tomorrow.

Saints arrive at the Etihad Stadium after defeat to Inter Milan in the Europa League, while City have had their own European troubles after being thrashed 4-0 by Barcelona in the Champions League.

And, while Claude Puel’s squad is stretched with injury and fatigued from their trip to Italy, Hojbjerg, who played under Guardiola at Bayern, reckons that Saints have the quality to compete with City as they head into another hectic week with three games, including the City trip, an EFL Cup tie against Sunderland on Wednesday and another league game at home to Chelsea next Sunday.

“It is a hard programme but we know that and have a team that can compete,” he said.

“We need to put ourselves up there. Every time we go on the pitch we want to get a result, we want to keep progressing.

“We have a good team and we want to improve some small details to get better. We still need to improve.”

He added: “Every game is a new opportunity and we will take that.”

The 21-year-old midfielder, who signed from Bayern in a £12m deal in the summer, has been grateful for the established players at Saints, who have helped him settle into life on the south coast.

“The guys are good, there are experienced people in the team,” he said. “There are some big players who have experienced a lot and they help me.

“Dusan Tadic, Jose Fonte, I could name them all, they are experienced people. Just to look at them as a young player you learn from them and that gives you a lot.”

With Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett out injured, left-back duty is likely to fall again to academy graduate Sam McQueen.

He made a dream first Saints start against Inter Milan at the San Siro on Thursday night and is primed for his first-ever Premier League start at another of football’s giants, City. “I would be excited again,” he said. “Everything has snowballed a bit and long may it continue.

“I am wishing Matty (Targett) gets back and gets fit and Berty (Bertrand) as well but I have to take the chances when I am here.

“It’s down to myself and I have to try and do what I have to do to give myself the best opportunity to get that chance again.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel: We will not play for a draw at Manchester City

Show/hide article…

Saints boss Claude Puel insists his side will not be playing for a draw at Manchester City.

While that would be a point gained, Puel is wary of going to the home of the Premier League leaders with anything less than an attacking mindset.

He said: “I have a lot of respect for [Pep] Guardiola and his team but it’s important to play our game, with good possession and not to focus too much on the opponent.

“That’s not always possible, we will see on Sunday. But I want my players to take confidence from their play [against Inter Milan], to give pleasure with their qualities on the pitch.

“Manchester like to have possession and their quality makes it difficult to defend against them.

“The challenge for Sunday is to find a solution. Not just to defend because that is not for me a good option.

“We also want to give problems to this team. It’s a good challenge for us against, for me, the top team.

“I hope to see our progress in the Premier League.”

Puel is expected to make several changes from the team that lost in the San Siro on Thursday night.

“It’s important for us to prepare well and have a good recovery,” he said.

“With just two days between these games it is very difficult. Manchester have more time to recover [from their 4-0 defeat at Barcelona on Wednesday].

“The players understand the reasons for the turnover and that it’s important to keep them in good physical condition.

“It’s difficult because the internationals in the squad are playing five competitive games [in two weeks].

“So it’s important for them to have different teams while keeping the identity in the play."

Charlie Austin is one of those likely to return to the starting line up on Sunday.

“He’s an interesting player, a real striker,” said Puel. “When we have a striker like Charlie it’s important to be careful with him and keep him fresh.”

Puel will no doubt have learnt from Manchester City’s 4-0 Champions League defeat against Barcelona in the Nou Camp, where goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was sent off for handling the ball outside his area after gifting the ball to Luis Suarez.

“It’s difficult to do the same thing because I don’t have Messi but it was interesting to see this team," said Puel, whose side impressed against Milan 24 hours later.

“We didn’t deserve to lose [in Milan] but we dominated with our quality on the pitch, creating a number of chances.

After making his debut as a substitute in the San Siro, his first outing since his last outing for Lille in April, record signing Sofiane Boufal could make his Premier League bow at City.

But Puel cautioned: “We will be patient with him, after five months out it’s important for him to come back step by step.”

Saints were yesterday waiting to discover the severity of Shane Long’s hamstring injury, but the Irishman will not be available tomorrow He joins Matt Targett, Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares on the sidelines.

Saints fans ‘chased by knife-wielding man through Milan’ after Saints game

Show/hide article…

They had travelled across Europe to see their beloved football team in one of their biggest games of their recent history.

But four Saints fans found themselves at the centre of a terrifying knifepoint drama shortly after watching Saints play Inter Milan in the Europa League.

The fans were chased through the streets by a man wearing women’s clothes brandishing a knife and threatening to kill them.

The supporters were among more than 7,000 fans who had travelled to Milan from Southampton for the game, which Saints lost 1-0.

Were you in Milan? See hundreds of pictures in our Saints in Milan gallery.

The incident happened after the four teenage fans had left the historic San Siro stadium on the outskirts of the city, with seven friends.

They looked for taxis to get back to their hotels as the metro line outside the ground was so busy but they got on the bus instead.

After a short while they realised the bus was going the wrong way and got off.

It was then that the Saints fans say a man dressed in woman’s clothing took offence to them and started to shout and threatened them.

Seven of the group jumped on a nearby bus but four Sam Sawyer, 19, Ben Hutchison, 19, Billy Allen, 18 and Ben Fripp, 17, had started to run off after they spotted the man had a knife in his hand.

He then took off his shoes and started to chase the frightened fans through the streets brandishing the knife.

The terrified teenagers, who don’t speak any Italian, then hid and tried to phone for help but say police were unable to locate where they were in the city.

The four spotted a taxi who came to their aid and took them back to the safety of their hotel.

Fan Billy Allen was one fo the fans confronted by the knifeman.

He said: "He looked at me and said 'I will kill you right now.

“We’re lucky to be alive as the man without doubt would have attacked us if he could.’’

The teenager added: ''This was the scariest incident off my life, I’m still shaking now.

"The incident wouldn’t have been so bad if the man didn’t have a knife on him, but there was a real intention to hurt us. The man was looking to hurt us.’’

Yesterday following their ordeal the fans made their way back to Southampton after flying to London City Airport and Heathrow respectively.

Pochettino admits Boruc was not easy to manage

Show/hide article…

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino maintains a warm relationship with Artur Boruc but admits the Bournemouth goalkeeper was a tricky player to manage at Southampton.

Boruc faces Spurs on Saturday, hoping to avoid a repeat of last season’s meetings when Pochettino’s men trounced the Cherries 3-0 and 5-1.

Harry Kane scored a hat-trick in the five-goal mauling at the Vitality Stadium and Boruc endured a day to forget as he conceded an early penalty before twice spilling shots he should have held.

Pochettino worked with the eccentric stopper during his year and a half at Southampton and says they maintain a close relationship.

‘We had a nice time together at Southampton. He is very special and a great keeper,’ Pochettino said.

'We have a very good relationship and after the games (last season) we hugged and we spoke, but not about football.

'That is because always after a game one of you is happy and one of you is sad. So always the talk is about the human relationships.

'All keepers are ‘special’ and he is no different. He is very emotional and he always found love and warmth for me. He’s a big guy.

‘Was he easy to manage? No, but then big players and good players are always quite difficult to manage. You have to find a way.’

A Tottenham win this weekend would send them top of the Premier League table, for a few hours at least, and extend their unbeaten start to nine matches.

Bournemouth, however, have run into some form themselves, having taken seven points from their last three and thrashed Hull 6-1 last time out.

Pochettino insists there is no room for complacency, despite last season’s comfortable victories.

‘I don’t like to look in the past. Last season we played well there and got the three points but every game is completely different,’ the Argentinian said.

'We tell our squad always we need to be focused and live in the present. The past is in the past. Of course you can learn from it.

‘But we need to go again and show we are better than Bournemouth and win the game.’

Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld are both out with ankle and leg injuries respectively while Danny Rose is a doubt with a bruised foot.
