United To Lose Schneiderlin As They Stall For Time - Southampton News
United To Lose Schneiderlin As They Stall For Time
In the past week or so it became clear that Manchester United were stalling for time over Morgan Schneiderlin, now they face losing him and other targets. What has become clear in the past week or so is that Morgan Schneiderlin is not the first choice for Manchester United or several other clubs for that matter, the Red Devils initially seemed very keen to land Schneiderlin ahead of Arsenal, but after appearing to convince the player that he should head to Old Trafford rather than the Emirates their behaviour since then has suggested that they are trying to keep Schneiderlin warm whilst chasing their priority targets.
That has been evidenced by the way they have chased Sergio Ramos whilst putting Schneiderlin on the back burner.
Yes they have bid for Schneiderlin but given the figure being quoted to bid far less and then fail to sit down at the table to negotiate suggests that the Saints player is a fall back option to them rather than a priority choice, you would have thought they could have easily have bought both, so the question is whether they have enough money to do that and land other targets, or whether Schneiderlin is a fall back option.
Certainly I think Schniderlin himself is starting to realise that as the Sunday papers are full of sources close to the player quoting that he prefers Arsenal anyway.
This could be a problem for him in that Arsenal have shown no inclination to sign him so far, they have not are any firm offers, they have been linked with other midfielders and there is also the suggestion that they may feel they have enough already at the club for their needs, certainly enough that they do not need to pay £25 million for another one.
So Morgan Schneiderlin finds himself in a bit of limbo, he doesn’t appear to be the main target for anyone and a over to a Premier League team in the Champions League is looking more unlikely with the only two of the four remotely interested not acting.

Morgan Schneiderlin: I’d rather join Arsenal than Man United

Manchester United to improve offer for Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin
Manchester United are poised to make a second bid for Morgan Schneiderlin after Southampton rejected an opening offer of around £20m for the midfielder.
Louis van Gaal is keen to add the Frenchman to his squad before the club fly out for the summer tour of the United States on 13 July. That leaves United with 10 days to complete the deal before landing in Seattle to start the four-game trip, and they are encouraged by Schneiderlin being keen to join as soon as possible.
Van Gaal is determined to avoid another poor start to the season, after last term’s yield of only 13 points from the opening 10 matches, and also has a Champions League final qualification knockout round to negotiate to enter the group stage, to be played over two legs in mid-August, the first leg of which is after two league games.
Van Gaal has been told by Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, that United must be serious challengers again next season. To meet this demand the Dutchman wants to strengthen the squad with at least one midfielder, a right-back and a striker, should Robin van Persie depart as is expected.
So far only Memphis Depay has been added in the current window and with the campaign starting on 8 August, Van Gaal is conscious time is beginning to press if he is to have a fully strengthened and settled squad for then.
The opening fixture with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford is just over a week after United return from the US.
Although Southampton hope to sell Schneiderlin for around £30m, United believe they can acquire the 25-year-old for a fee of closer to £25m. If the south coast club continue to resist, Schneiderlin could consider direct action.
Last summer he tweeted his outrage when Southampton refused to sell him to any interested parties, halting a move to Tottenham. The player, who can operate in a holding role or as a more dynamic midfielder, admitted considering going on strike.
After the Dutchman declined to sign Nathaniel Clyne despite United being his first-choice – the England international has since signed for Liverpool – Van Gaal has revived his interest in Seamus Coleman, the Everton right-back. Van Gaal had hoped to land the 26-year-old in the winter window but the deal did not happen then.

Arsenal News: Schneiderlin snubs Man Utd for Gunners, £17.8m Benzema bid, Liverpool battle
Morgan Schneiderlin has told friends he wants to join Arsenal, report the Sunday Times.
Manchester United are desperate to sign the 25-year-old to add power to their midfield.
They had a £20m bid rejected by Southampton last week and they’re set to up the stakes to get their man.
But Schneiderlin would prefer to work with Arsene Wenger at Arsenal than sign for Louis van Gaal at United.

Manchester United transfer rumours: Schneiderlin news, Ramos latest, Kane contact
You have heard this one before, but Manchester United have reiterated to Real Madrid they will only sell David de Gea to them if Sergio Ramos moves in the opposite direction.
United will also table an improved offer for Morgan Schneiderlin this week (what’s taken them so long?).
Southampton rejected an initial £20m bid a fortnight ago and with Arsenal no longer keen on the Frenchman, United are in a one-horse race.
Although United are in danger of not signing Schneiderlin and Ramos, according to the Sunday Times.
United’s reported €15m offer for Torino right-back Matteo Darmian was too low.
Torino want €20m for 25-year-old Italy international Darmian, who performed brilliantly against England at last year’s World Cup.
United have touched base with Tottenham over 21-year-old striker Harry Kane.
Kane, who enjoyed an admittedly excellent 2014-15, is regarded as a possible long-term No.9 at United, with Karim Benzema and Romelu Lukaku also under consideration.
Should Robin van Persie leave United, the club will have to sign a striker this summer and Kane would cost at least £40m, given his age, nationality, form last season and who his club’s chairman is.
Crackpot astrologer Raymond Domenech has told Hugo Lloris not to make the sideways move from Tottenham to United.
Lloris has spent three seasons with Tottenham
And take this one with a shovel of salt: Stoke’s Asmir Begovic is wanted by Van Gaal.

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United…
According to a report from the Guardian, Manchester United are preparing to make an improved offer for Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
The French international was allegedly the subject of a £20million bid from Louis van Gaal’s side earlier this summer, but with that rejected United are said to be keen to conclude a deal before they travel to America for their pre-season tour.
The report goes on to claim that van Gaal wants to sign a new right-back, at least one new midfielder and a striker if Robin van Persie leaves this summer.
Schneiderlin would certainly solve one of those problems, but he will not come cheap, if at all.
In other news, the Guardian also reports that van Persie is indeed close to a summer exit, with his agent allegedly in Turkey to discuss a potential move to Fenerbahce.
The report claims the Dutchman’s representative has been in Istanbul for two days and that the United striker has already agreed personal terms with the club.
If he does move on that would leave United with just Wayne Rooney, James Wilson, Javier Hernandez and Angelo Henriquez, with doubts remaining about the long-term futures of the latter two players.
Do you think it is time van Persie left United?

Morgan Schneiderlin prefers a move to Arsenal, not Manchester United
Arsenal have been handed a major boost in our reported attempts to land Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin after it was reported that he favours a move to Arsenal ahead of Manchester United, The Sunday Times reports.
After being heavily linked with us early in the summer, a number of outlets revealed that we had pulled out of the race and the midfielder was poised to sign for Manchester United (via the Daily Mail).
However, The Times now suggests that is not the case and Schneiderlin is convinced that he would fit into our style of play and relishes the chance to work under Arsene Wenger.
Not only are Wenger and Schneiderlin from France, but they were both born in the confined city of Strasbourg which doesn’t make it beyond the realms of possibility that the two have known each other for some time.

Five players to takeover the Arsenal No.9 shirt
Despite the emergence of Francis Coquelin, we still need a holding midfielder this summer such is the lack of adequate cover for the rising midfielder.
Should he pick up a knock next season, we may have to field one of Mikel Arteta or Mathieu Flamini in that position, which will make for grim viewing.
If it’s not Schneiderlin, the boss can hopefully still add another midfielder to the ranks and boost our squad for a realistic title challenge.

Will Southampton ever be able to hold onto their main stars in the modern era?
When Nathaniel Clyne finally put pen to paper and officially became a Liverpool player this week, Southampton fans – both old and new – must have been met with a familiar feeling of frustrating déjà vu.
Rightly or wrongly, the St. Mary’s faithful have had to become reluctantly accustomed to losing their most promising stars in recent times. The Premier League’s ‘top’ sides are seemingly falling increasingly short in producing their own young talent with every passing season nowadays – so sides like the Saints invariably have to witness their own stars getting cherry picked as a result of their competitor’s apparent incompetence in the development department.
Clyne’s recent move to Anfield is just the latest in a long line of similar deals that have seen Southampton’s once promising future assets look to try their hand at one of England’s more prestigious and traditionally successful clubs.
So, with this potentially concerning trend continuing to effect the determined Saints ahead of the 2015/16 campaign, we are left to ask whether or not teams like Southampton will ever be able to hold onto their most important players in the modern era?
The most recent pattern for Ronald Koeman’s side in the transfer market doesn’t seem to suggest that they will. The St. Mary’s faithful have witnessed their club truly come on leaps and bounds in the past few seasons. Southampton now try to adopt an extremely entertaining approach in their week-to-week matches, with a squad full of young home-grown talent just waiting to make a meaningful mark on the international scene.
Koeman has witnessed a great deal of success within his current group of players as a result of Southampton’s ability to produce young stars in the modern era – yet because such players inevitably get shipped off to the so-called better teams sooner or later – it seems the Saints will forever struggle to build upon their promising foundations in today’s game.
When players like Nathaniel Clyne – up and coming future England talents who were already well suited to the surroundings at St. Mary’s – leave their current employers with the hope of succeeding elsewhere, teams like Southampton are forced go back to square one and gather round the drawing board once again.
Yes, money always acts as an important compensation factor in these instances, but as transfer fees simply can’t buy your club a historic and illustrious reputation within the world of modern day football, financial gain never really fills the void left by departing footballers in the long run.
Brendan Rodgers and his current Liverpool outfit must also consider they’re position within all of this however, for the Reds’ shameless rinsing of the St. Mary’s talent pool in recent times really has been questionable to say the least.
The likes of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren could have all been easily forgotten about on Merseyside last season. It seems Liverpool didn’t actually have much of a clue on how they wanted to play the aforementioned players, instead likely being lured in by the initial hype and expectation that first came their way more than anything else.
Does Brendan Rodgers want to continue hand picking expensive stars from elsewhere who will inevitably fall short of their inflated reputations, or will Liverpool eventually start giving more opportunities to their own youngsters with a view of turning them into solid first team starters down the line?
Either way, teams likes Southampton are currently being handed a harsh deal in the cold light of day. Obviously such activity from the Premier League’s top boys acts as nothing new with all things considered – but as Liverpool’s most recent interest in players on the South Coast serves to suggest – very little is being done to buck this trend in order to find a more sustainable approach.
These players, some of which are meant to be leading the line successfully for England throughout the next few years or so, will only fall short on the international scene if they don’t get enough game time at club level. Young stars need to be able to develop their game at a natural rate in the Premier League before they are truly worthy of their hype – yet because sides like Liverpool continue to speed up that process in the hope of an immediate pay off – the careers of such players inevitably feel somewhat rushed and subsequently damaged as a result.
So then, whilst the Saints continue to be punished for consistently producing promising players from the transfer market and their own academy alike, it seems Southampton will never truly be able to hold onto their most important stars in this ever questionable and money-driven world of modern day football.

Kelvin Davis Should Be Given A Testimonial - Southampton News
Kelvin Davis Should Be Given A Testimonial
It is rare these days that a player completes 10 years at a club but that is just what Kelvin Davis will have done by the end of the coming season. The era of players remaining loyal to one club throughout their career is long gone and it is very rare that a player with a club in the top two divisions manages to complete a decade at one club, it is even rarer that a player who has done that hasn’t been at the club from a youngster but has been signed relatively late in his career.
So perhaps it is right that Southampton Football Club recognise the efforts put in by Kelvin Davis for them over what will be by the time his contract runs out in the summer of 2016, 10 full seasons.
I have to admit I have not always been the biggest admirer of Kelvin, his first two seasons were not the best, but he stayed focused and made his third season a good one followed by several more that saw us rise from the depths of League One and back to the Premier.
Indeed he could have left the club in the summer of 2008 at its darkest hour, West Ham United were offering him good money to be their reserve keeper and with Saints in administration and at that point a serious buyer not in sight it must have been tempting, but he stayed loyal and enjoyed three good seasons including an appearance at Wembley.
Since being back in the Premier his games have been less and less and he has found himself playing second fiddle to Arturo Boric, Fraser Forster and even Paulo Gazzaniga at times, but he hasn’t complained he has got on with things and you have the feeling that his presence in the dressing room and around Stapleford is vital.
Now he enters the last season of his contract and turning 39 in September it will surely be his last for Saints.
That being the case Saints now need to do two things, firstly they need to award him a testimonial game for the end of season 2015/16 and secondly they need to offer him a role within the club when he hangs up his gloves.
In the Cortése years our club legends were not only airbrushed from history but in the case of at least two they were treated disgracefully. That all seems to be changing under the new regime so awarding Kelvin a testimonial would be a great way of showing the fans that we are building something here on great foundations.
So come on Saints honour Kelvin he has been a great servant to Southampton Football Club, he not only deserves this game, but deserves his place in the club history book.

Holland legend Van Basten snubs Southampton boss
Marco van Basten has surprisingly left his former international teammate Ronald Koeman out of his all-time best eleven despite the success they both had playing for Holland. The former AC Milan forward was asked by FourFourTwo to pick a team consisting of the best players he has played with or against, and the Southampton boss has only made the substitutes bench.
Van Basten and Koeman were two key players of the Dutch side which won the European Championships in 1988, defeating the Soviet Union 2-0 in the final. Despite this Van Basten hasn’t selected the former Barcelona star in his all-time best eleven and instead has gone with his ex Ac Milan teammate Alessandro Costacurta to partner Italy legend Franco Baresi. However, Van Basten does have a good words to say about the Southampton manager as he believes Koeman was a clever defender. The Holland legend said Koeman brought a lot of experience to the team and was always looking to bring the ball forward.
Van Basten has his career cut short by injury but did enough in a short period of time to be considered a legend in the game. He was influential in Holland winning the European Championships in 1988 and also led AC Milan to two European cup successes. The former Ajax star was named the European footballer of the year on three occasions before he retired aged just 28 years old.

Italian journalist reports fresh claims regarding Alderweireld’s proposed Tottenham move
It is being reported that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to sign Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid.
According to well-respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to sign Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid this summer.
The latest report claims a deal was reached in the last few hours, with Tottenham paying an initial £11.4million with up to £1.4million in add-ons and that White Hart Lane now awaits the 26-year-old.
Alderweireld spent last season on loan at Southampton where he consistently impressed, playing 28 games and looking every inch a Premier League star.
He may have been deemed surplus to requirements at Atletico but Southampton quickly benefited and it now seems Tottenham have taken advantage to make his stay in England a permanent one.
A recent report from the Daily Mail claimed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was in Spain to hold key talks with Atletico in the hope of sealing a deal by Sunday night.
Well if Di Marzio is correct, Levy managed that with a day to spare, and if the Belgian international does arrive at Tottenham in the coming days it will be a wonderful piece of business and proof that Mauricio Pochettino’s side is heading in the right direction.
Would Alderweireld be Tottenham’s most important signing of the summer if he arrives?

Ex-Leeds star Max Gradel has kind words to say about reported Premier League suitors Bournemouth
Ex-Leeds star Max Gradel has been linked with a move to Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Watford and Southampton this summer.
Speaking to reporters for the French publication Le10sport, former Leeds United star Max Gradel has labelled reported suitor Bournemouth a good footballing team with an excellent coach.
The Ivorian international’s future is the subject of much speculation in France, owing to his desire to leave current club St Etienne for a possible return to England.
As per London24, Sunderland and Crystal Palace are said to be interested, Le10sport states Watford as a fellow suitor while the Mirror claims Southampton are looking to hijack Bournemouth’s move for the star.
But of the reported Premier League suitors, it is Bournemouth who seemingly hold the most weight in France with reporters bringing up their interest during an interview with the star.
"Bournemouth? I heard that information. Right now, I see my name linked with a number of clubs. I know Bournemouth because I played for them before,” he explained.
“This is a good team that plays good football. Right now, I do not know what will happen. Eddie Howe is an excellent coach, I have worked with him. He is an excellent coach and a good person.”
Would a move to Bournemouth be a good option for Gradel?
While Sunderland, Southampton and Crystal Palace are undoubtedly more established in the Premier League, Bournemouth are arguably the team which suits Gradel the most.

Boss Eddie Howe has a fantastic record in getting the best out of his wingers, and the Cherries’ slick style of football allows the wide men to get on the ball as often as they can.
The former Elland Road favourite hit 17 goals for St Etienne last season, with his pace, trickery and proficiency in the final third key attributes which Howe will be looking at this summer.
Which team represents the best option for Max Gradel?

Man Utd set to miss out on Sergio Ramos and Morgan Schneiderlin
Manchester United are in danger of losing out on transfer targets Sergio Ramos and Morgan Schneiderlin, according to the .
The Real Madrid defender and Southampton midfielder have been among the players most strongly linked with moves to Louis van Gaal’s side – but the Red Devils could yet fail to land either. Both players are reported to have reservations about joing United.
Ramos is unsettled at the Bernabeu, where he has been allowed to enter the final two years of his contract while several team-mates have been offered extensions and pay-rises.
But the Madrid hierarchy reportedly feel that a new contract offer worth €10m-a-year after tax would right that perceived wrong and convince the 29-year-old Spain international to extend his 10-year stay at the club.
France international Schneiderlin looks set to quit Southampton this summer but is reportedly yet to be convinced that a move to Old Trafford is the right one for him.
The 25-year-old is said to favour a switch to Arsenal, who are arguably more in need of a regular starter matching his description.

Spurs have beaten Southampton to the signing of Toby Alderweireld [Di Marzio]
It has looked likely for a few weeks now that Spurs would beat Southampton to the signing of Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld.
According to most reports, Tottenham have been the frontrunners as they look to bring in yet another Belgian to their first team squad.
Toby Alderweireld was a success at Southampton in 2014/2015, on loan from Atletico Madrid, where he was part of one of the stingiest defences in the Premier League.
On Sunday morning, Toby Alderweireld’s move to Tottenham was confirmed by Sky Italia transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been in Madrid, and Di Marzio has confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Atletico.
Alderweireld has signed on at Tottenham for 16 million euros, with 1-2 million euros in incentives.
According to Di Marzio, the deal was completed in recent hours and its just a matter of time before an announcement.
Alderweireld is keen to play alongside Jan Vertonghen and will also join up with Nacer Chadli and Mousa Dembele at White Hart Lane.
Once announced, Alderweireld will be Tottenham’s third defensive signing of the summer, after Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier.
