Inter Milan 1-0 Southampton: Van Dijk believes Saints should have won

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk said Saints were “the only team that deserved to win” after their 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan.

Saints had fine chances to score in the ninth minute, when Jay Rodriguez conceded possession after hesitating from a shooting position, and in the second half through Virgil van Dijk.

The central defender similarly missed a fine chance in the recent 0-0 draw away to Israel’s Hapoel Be’er Sheva, and on this occasion produced too casual a finish saved by Samir Handanovic when requiring only a routine finish from directly in front of goal.

Puel also recognised the return against Inter in a fortnight has become “interesting”, while Van Dijk said: "We were the only team that deserved to win and to concede a goal with their only chance frustrated.

"We should have had the game dead and buried in the first half but that is what happens if you don’t take your chances.

“I had a big chance with my left foot and a header. We had so many opportunities to win the game.”

The result also relieved some of the pressure that had been building on Inter manager Frank de Boer, and the Dutchman said: "They created some very dangerous chances. We knew that they were very dangerous.

“At first there were small chances for both of us. Luckily we have a great goalkeeper, he was unbelievable. The result for the group? It’s very important for us.”

Claude Puel defends selection policy after Southampton fall at Inter

Show/hide article…

MILAN – Southampton manager Claude Puel dismissed suggestions his rotation system was responsible for their “unlucky” 1-0 Europa League defeat at Inter Milan.

Antonio Candreva’s exceptional second-half goal secured an important victory for Inter at the San Siro that prevented their visitors from building a lead at the top of Group K.

One of the most glamorous fixtures in Southampton’s history concluded with them third in the group when they could have taken a significant step towards reaching the knockout stages.

Despite being reduced to 10 men after Marcelo Brozovic’s red card, Inter have returned to contention after winning their first points.

Defeat also came after Puel made six changes from the starting XI he had selected in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat of Burnley – an injury suffered by Matt Targett meant one was forced upon him – which included goal scorers Charlie Austin and Nathan Redmond.

Asked if his changes had disrupted his team, Puel responded: "No. I think if you can play a very good game… We have all the time fresh players to play good football. This is very, very important.

"Not all the players can play good football [if they play every game]. It’s important to consider all the players. We want to go for the qualification with all the squad and not just 11 players.

"We can see [we played a] good game with the quality against Inter away it is difficult to think and to answer the question. It’s a very, very good game and unlucky. We are just unlucky.

“We do good work and with all the many chances we can play very good on the ground with quality, and just (need) a goal to be rewarded for all this good play. It is a frustration.”

Southampton had fine chances to score in the ninth minute, when Jay Rodriguez conceded possession after hesitating from a shooting position, and in the second half through Virgil van Dijk.

Southampton “deserved it most” claims Virgil van Dijk as he rues “unlucky” loss to Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

After their fairy-tale journey to the San Siro, Southampton only have themselves to blame for not having a happy ending to cap off the story.

Six years after they were in League One and Inter were lifting the Champions League , the Saints and their army of 7,000 travelling fans marched into Milan for one of the biggest nights in the club’s history.

They should have left with three points and a victory against 10-man Inter that would have gone down as one of their most famous.

But instead they went home empty handed, mainly because of their own poor finishing.

Southampton created enough chances to win not just this game but the return at St Mary’s in a fortnight too.

Yet Inter’s Antonio Candreva scored the only goal as Claude Puel’s men were punished and taught a harsh lesson.

Captain Virgil Van Dijk said: “We were the only team that deserved to win and to concede a goal with their only chance is frustrating.

“We should have had the game dead and buried in the first half but that is what happens in football if you don’t take your chances.

“We had so many opportunities to win the game. Now we have to move on.”

Puel, whose side slipped to third in Group K, said: “It’s a big disappointment for my players and frustration because they did good work, it just lacked a goal to be rewarded for all this good play. We are just unlucky.”

Despite the best efforts of Southampton’s fans the San Siro was not even half full.

And after losing their first two group games, lacklustre Inter looked as bothered about the Europa League as their fans.

Southampton took advantage of the half-hearted hosts approach but were let down in front of goal.

Jay Rodriguez was the biggest first-half culprit, losing his composure twice in the box at the crucial moment.

He also had an other attempt hacked off the line and just failed to reach a Shane Long flick-on, while James Ward-Prowse blazed just over.

Sub Charlie Austin replaced hamstring injury victim Shane Long after the break and fired a yard wide then Candreva swept in Davide Santon’s cross in the 67th minute to hand Inter an undeserved lead.

But Van Dijk missed a sitter, Steven Davis had a header booted off the line, Samir Handanovic denied Austin with a brilliant sprawling save and James Ward-Prowse volleyed inches wide at the death.

Inter Milan 1-0 Southampton: De Boer grateful for Handanovic saves

Show/hide article…

Frank De Boer admitted he was grateful to Samir Handanovic for saving his side as the Inter Milan keeper made a string of excellent stops to deny Saints.

The 32-year-old Slovenian made several excellent late saves to prevent Saints from bagging an equaliser, having already been busy earlier in the game.

Ultimately, Saints’ lack of clinical finishing and Handanovic’s good form proved costly as they went down 1-0 in the San Siro.

De Boer said: “Especially after we were down to ten men and they created some very dangerous chances, especially with the head.

“We knew that they were very dangerous but we have to improve on that also of course.

“At first there were small chances for both of us, and maybe we had one in the first half and they had maybe two in the first half.

“The second half we had two chances and they had two chances, but after the red card they were pressing high with long balls and they were dangerous.

“Luckily we have a great goalkeeper and he was unbelievable.

“We knew he was an unbelievable goalkeeper and he showed it again for us, and for that we are happy.

“About that result for the group is very important for us.

“Next week we have to play very disciplined and when we have the ball we need to make better choices. It is just a matter of time.”

Inter’s win provided their first points of the Europa League Group K campaign, and reignited their chances of making the knockout stages.

It will be a vital fixture for both sides when Inter visit St Mary’s in a fortnight.

De Boer feels he has learned plenty of lessons for the return match, and is hoping his side can make further progress when the teams meet again.

“I think Southampton are very dangerous at set pieces, they scored two goals from dead ball situations in their last match,” he reflected.

“We couldn’t afford to give away cheap free kicks because it’s always very difficult against such tall, powerful opposition players.

“I think that it was only a question of when we had the ball we need to play without fear, but we already saw a vast improvement in the second half.

“These are very small details, by pushing further on between the lines but we are making strides and improving on that and played better in the second half, but these details are very important and what I saw was a very disciplined outfit.”

Virgil van Dijk says Southampton should have beaten Inter before half-time

Virgil van Dijk says Southampton should have beaten Inter before half-time

Virgil van Dijk believes Southampton’s profligacy was to blame for the 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan at the San Siro.

The Saints were by far the better team against the Italian giants, but Antonio Candreva bagged the only goal of the game with Inter’s solitary attempt on target.

Van Dijk could and probably should have scored twice himself late on, but the centre-back believes that his side should have been out of sight by half-time, such was the level of their control of the game.

“We were the only team that deserved to win and to concede a goal with their only chance frustrated,” Van Dijk said.

"We should have had the game dead and buried in the first half but that is what happens if you don’t take your chances.

“I had a big chance with my left foot and a header. We had so many opportunities to win the game.”

Inter went down to 10 men for the final 12 minutes when Marcelo Brozovic was shown a second yellow, but even with a numerical advantage Southampton were unable to find the net.

“It’s a very, very good game and unlucky - we are just unlucky,” Southampton boss Claude Puel told reporters after the game.

“We do good work and with all the many chances we can play very good on the ground with quality, and just [need] a goal to be rewarded for all this good play. It is a frustration.”

Ward-Prowse: We needed to be more clinical

Show/hide article…

Saints dominated against their Italian counterparts, but were unable to get themselves ahead, despite creating a number of good chances in the first 45 minutes.

Antonio Candreva’s 67th-minute goal then gave Inter the lead, and despite further opportunities late on, Claude Puel’s men left the San Siro empty handed.

Speaking about the defeat, Ward-Prowse said: “The general feeling is that we all feel a little bit hard done by.

“We had a few good chances, especially in the first half and then a couple late on. We needed to be more clinical and put those chances away.

“Against good teams and in the Europa League we’re going to find it tough if we don’t. We need to be taking the chances.

“I was a bit disappointed in the first half with the one I had, but as a team we had to be more clinical. Maybe we needed a little bit of luck in front of goal.”

Rodriguez promises goals after “proud” San Siro appearance is soured by missed opportunity

Show/hide article…

IT was the ultimate dream for Saints to play against Inter Milan at the San Siro in their crown jewel Europa League group match.

But a downhearted Jay Rodriguez conceded that a “proud” moment, playing with his family watching on at one of the world’s most iconic stadiums, meant almost nothing because of the overriding feeling that Claude Puel’s side should have won.

“It was a surreal moment,” said Rodriguez. “My family’s here and I was chatting to them afterwards. It’s a proud moment, but it doesn’t really mean anything when you lose.”

“We’re obviously disappointed after putting all that into the game,” he continued. “We had some great chances that we should have scored.

“They’ve had a couple of shots and we’ve conceded one which we’re disappointed with, but we have to now focus on Sunday (against Manchester City).”

Saints, who were backed by 7,000 noisy travelling supporters, performed well, but were cut down by Antonio Candreva’s goal on 67 minutes.

The 27-year-old Saints striker felt that those that made the journey across the continent deserved better, although has urged Saints not to let their heads drop with a trip to Premier League leaders Manchester City coming up on Sunday.

“We deserved more out the game and the fans did as well,” he said. “They were great support. They were right behind us and we felt that in the game.

“We came here to win the game and I thought we had the chances to and, although we’re disappointed, we can’t keep our heads down with Sunday coming, which we’re looking forward to.”

Rodriguez returned to Saints’ starting side after finally recovering from yet another injury setback after two years blighted with continual fitness problems.

His performance in the match suggested that he was still rusty and finding his feet again, with a number of loose touches and a couple of chances squandered.

“I’m not happy,” he said. “I’m always like this after a game I haven’t scored in.

“I feel fine, I felt great,” he added when asked about his fitness. “I just want more and more of it.

“That’s what I need and I’m sure the goals will come. I just need to keep my fitness and keep on the field.”

He is now targeting a run of games to get back to his best.

“I need regular games,” he said. “That’s the main thing. I need a run of games to find my form and the goals will come.”

The Europa League group has now been blown wide open, with every team now in with a shout of qualification after Inter grabbed their first win and Sparta Prague triumphed at Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

However, Rodriguez still feels that Saints are in with a big shout with two home games in their remaining three group games.

They face Inter on November 3 before welcoming Hapoel Be’er Sheva on December 8, with a trip to Sparta sandwiched in between on November 24.

“We know that but we’ve got a few home games now and that’ll be a strong point for us,” he said. “But we have to focus on the next game.”

THE VERDICT: What a journey for Saints

Show/hide article…

From the lowest of lows to the highest of highs. Welcome to the rollercoaster world of Southampton Football Club.

Last night’s game in the San Siro was so much more than just another football match.

For many of the protagonists on the pitch that may not have been the case, the manager insisted it was definitely no more than just a game to be won like any other.

But, then, players and managers come and go at football clubs. The fans are the only constant.

And while it would perhaps be unfair to expect Claude Puel to really understand what this game meant to the club, and have any real perspective on it, the 7,000 supporters who paid hundreds, for a trip to Milan knew it.

While Inter Milan were winning the last of their Champions League titles in 2009/10, Saints were in League One.

They were starting their battle back from the brink, from administration, two relegations, point deductions and the very edge of existence.

Indeed, at this stage in 2009 they had just completed a 3-1 win over Oldham in front of 5,431 fans at Boundary Park. They were second from bottom of League One, looking up at Tranmere immediately above them.

In 2016, really a short space of time outside of the world of football, Inter are a faded giant while Saints are on the up and up. While Saints are now playing at the San Siro having completed their remarkable rise back to the top, Tranmere are no longer even in the Football League.

To be playing Inter Milan at all, and at the San Siro, was a sight many Saints fans thought they would never see.

Back in 2010 the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy seemed a step back towards glory. Even then nobody could have foreseen this evening.

It’s why Saints fans were in such great spirits.

As they arrived and mingled outside the ground, taking photos and selfies to last a lifetime, the atmosphere they generated was incredible. It was just so happy.

Three of the giant stands of the San Siro were sparsely populated by Inter fans. The middle tier behind one goal was crammed with Saints supporters, making their presence known.

Who thought the ‘Calmore Saints’ flag would fly at the San Siro? It was that kind of once in a generation event. It was why so many of the Southampton population had decamped to Milan.

And if it was a big night for the Saints fans, then how about Sam McQueen, the 21-year-old Southampton born, former Mountbatten School pupil and Tyro League player who made his first senior start for the club at the San Siro.

It had all the hallmarks of Chris Baird being thrust in as a surprise pick for the FA Cup final in 2003. And, like Baird, he looked a natural.

The first half really felt as if an ordinary Inter side were second best to Saints. The only frustration was that Saints didn’t get a deserved lead.

With Inter determined to play out from the back no matter how suicidal it might seem, Saints employed an unusually high press and with Cuco Martina and Dusan Tadic combining superbly down the right, were on top for the majority.

Jay Rodriguez was often the most advanced player through the middle for Saints, with Shane Long and Tadic peeling out wide.

The only trouble for the striker was, quite understandably as he battles back to sharpness, that his legs didn’t seem to quite keep up with his ever sharp footballing brain.

He really should have got a shot away on eight minutes when Miranda ducked under a direct ball to let him in, but Rodriguez was a little hesitant and the chance passed by.

Rodriguez started another forward break on 25 minutes, poking the ball out to McQueen on the left and continuing his run into the area.

McQueen produced a fine cross which keeper Samir Handanovic pushed out into Rodriguez but Yuto Nagatomo was back to stop the ball dribbling over the line.

James Ward-Prowse should have done better when Martina picked him out with a square ball across the face of the area but sidefooted firmly over the bar while Rodriguez couldn’t quite get on the end of a cross that was flicked towards the far post.

Inter only threatened briefly in the closing stages of the half, Eder driving narrowly wide from 20 yards after Maya Yoshida’s clearing header fell straight to him.

The second half was a different affair, as Inter shut down Saints’ right side and adapted their own game to stifle Claude Puel’s men.

Indeed, it was, eventually, Saints left to rue those missed first half chances.

After sub Charlie Austin had driven wide from 20 yards and Tadic saw a low drive stopped by Handanovic, Inter took the lead on 67 minutes.

Davide Santon was able to by himself a yard more space than he should have got down the left and cut the ball back to Antonio Candreva, who peeled off of Virgil van Dijk and struck a superb finish that flew past Fraser Forster and in off the underside of the bar, leading to the customary flares lighting up the stadium.

Saints were given further incentive to press forward when Marcelo Brozovic was sent off for a second bookable offence with 12 minutes remaining.

Try as they might though, they couldn’t get past Handanovic, who produced three excellent close range stops to deny van Dijk’s shot, Steven Davis’ header and then Austin who looked set to score from six yards out.

When Ward-Prowse let fly with an effort from outside of the box that whistled narrowly wide it clearly was not to be.

However, this game was about more than a result to Saints, and the grand history of the club.

Puel defends rotation policy after Inter defeat

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel defended his rotation policy as Saints were beaten by Inter Milan at the San Siro.

The Frenchman’s decision to change the team worked a treat against Sparta Prague in the Europa League Group K opener, and also paid off as they bagged a point in Israel at Hapoel Be’er Sehva.

However, defeat to Inter Milan inevitably led to questions over leaving the likes of Charlie Austin and Jose Fonte on the bench.

However, Puel, who made six changes for the game in Italy, believes his way is still the right way.

“No. I think if you can play tonight a very good game because you turn the effective and we have all the time fresh players to play good football, and this is very very important,” he retorted when asked whether his changes had disrupted the team.

“Not all the players can play good football (when playing every game), it’s not the thing and it’s important to consider all the players.

“We want to go for the qualification with all the squad and not just 11 players.

“When we can see this good game with the quality against Inter away it is difficult to think and to answer the question.

“I think it’s a very very good game and unlucky. We are just unlucky.”

Saints host Inter at St Mary’s next and could do with a positive result with Group K getting ever tighter.

With three games down, all four sides are still in with a great shout of getting through, making for a competitive finale.

“I think the four teams have the possibility for the qualification,” admitted Puel.

“It’s a good mini championship, it’s a difficult group, but it’s interesting and all my players learn with this game and we step by step get nearer qualification.

“The comeback against Inter will be interesting.

“For now just three games, one at home and two away, and you are always in the competition.”

One of the bright spots from the evening was the performance of Southampton born 21-year-old Sam McQueen, who looked hugely assured at left back on his first senior start for the club.

“It was just his second game and for him it is a new position he plays and it is interesting to see his technical quality and a good physical also.

“For the future it will be Ryan Bertrand and Targett very good players in his position but it is difficult for the moment to speak of the quality of my players because it is frustration and we can see the quality of this team.”

Puel insists Southampton were ‘just unlucky’ against Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel revealed his frustration at Southampton’s inability to score the goal he felt they deserved during their 1-0 Europa League defeat at Inter Milan.

Antonio Candreva’s exceptional second-half strike secured an important victory for Inter at San Siro that prevented their visitors from building a lead at the top of Group K.

One of the most glamorous fixtures in Southampton’s history concluded with them third from four, although they could have taken a significant step towards reaching the knockout stages.

Despite being reduced to 10 men after Marcelo Brozovic’s red card, Inter held on to pick up their first points.

Puel made six changes from the starting XI he had selected in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat of Burnley - an injury suffered by Matt Targett meant one was forced upon him - which included goalscorers Charlie Austin and Nathan Redmond.

Asked if those changes had disrupted his team, the manager responded: 'No. I think if you can play a very good game … we have all the time fresh players to play good football. This is very, very important.

'Not all the players can play good football (if they play every game). It’s important to consider all the players. We want to go for the qualification with all the squad and not just 11 players.

'We can see (we played a) good game with the quality against Inter away, it is difficult to think and to answer the question. It’s a very, very good game and unlucky. We are just unlucky.

‘We do good work and with all the many chances we can play very good on the ground with quality, and just (need) a goal to be rewarded for all this good play. It is a frustration.’

Southampton’s best chances came when Jay Rodriguez conceded possession after hesitating from a shooting position in the ninth minute and in the second half through Virgil van Dijk.

The central defender similarly missed a fine chance in the recent 0-0 draw away to Israel’s Hapoel Be’er Sheva, and on this occasion produced too casual a finish which was saved by Samir Handanovic.

Puel also recognised the return against Inter in a fortnight has become ‘interesting’, while Van Dijk told BT Sport: 'We were the only team that deserved to win and to concede a goal with their only chance frustrated.

'We should have had the game dead and buried in the first half but that is what happens if you don’t take your chances.

‘I had a big chance with my left foot and a header. We had so many opportunities to win the game.’

The result also relieved some of the pressure that had been building on Inter manager Frank de Boer, and the Dutchman said: 'They created some very dangerous chances. We knew that they were very dangerous.

‘At first there were small chances for both of us. Luckily we have a great goalkeeper, he was unbelievable. The result for the group? It’s very important for us.’
