McQueen enjoyed every second

Show/hide article…

Sam McQueen says he got what he wanted out of his Premier League debut after helping the team to a 3-1 win over Burnley.

Youngster McQueen entered the action as a 14th minute substitute for Matt Targett after the left back went off injured early in the first half.

Having featured for the first team throughout pre-season, McQueen was ready for his opportunity and felt comfortable at playing straightaway, after seeing Targett make way.

“I just enjoyed it to be fair, which is what I wanted to get out of it for my Premier League debut,” he said. “I didn’t want to overthink it or anything I just wanted to play well, do my best which I got to do so I just enjoyed every second that I was out there.

“I knew beforehand that he [Targett] had been injured leading up to the game, but he felt 100 per cent ready for the game and I was just on my toes and ready in case anything happened and it did, but I hope he’s all right and not too bad.

“It meant I get my chance which is fantastic and I’m just grateful that I’ve been given an opportunity and I’ll try now to get a few more.”

Upon entering the action McQueen was given a rousing reception from the St Mary’s faithful, while the youngster added that he was well supported by his teammate son the pitch too.

“I thought I’d be more nervous,” he admitted. “But the boys were fantastic and when I came on they encouraged me and spoke to me, giving me every bit of advice that they could, which made it easy coming on.

“You do what you’ve been training to do and what you’ve practiced on for years and waiting on an opportunity for, and the rest came naturally.

“It’s what people always talk about with Southampton is the academy and people coming through and players playing together, which I now going to happen again because it’s true. Coming on for him a fellow academy player, is special and I gave him a hug as I came on to see that he was all right, and even though he was coming off he wished me all the best, which was really nice.”

Our Premier League quiz will test your knowledge

Show/hide article…

It’s that time of the week when we test how much attention you paid to the latest round of fixtures with our Premier League rewind quiz.

Matchday eight saw Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City fail to win for the second successive league game with a 1-1 draw against Everton at the Etihad, after winning their first six this season.

In contrast, Arsenal won their sixth consecutive league game with a 3-2 win over Swansea to draw level with league leaders City on 19 points - just one goal behind on goal difference.

The Gunners held on against the Swans after Granit Xhaka was sent off for a deliberate foul in the 69th minute, his fourth red card since the start of last season - more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.

At the other end of the table, Sunderland’s 2-0 defeat to Stoke meant the Black Cats became only the second team in top-flight history to not win any of their opening eight games in consecutive seasons - matching Bury’s unwanted record from 1905/06.

We’ve selected some of the best stats and facts from matchday eight to see how closely you were watching. Play the quiz below and see how you do…

Austin relishing another big week

Show/hide article…

The forward now has seven goals in six games following his brace at the weekend.

Now, with attentions turning to a UEFA Europa League against Internazionale at the San Siro, Austin is hoping to keep the unbeaten run going.

He said: “I’m delighted with my own form but it’s all about the team at the moment because we’re on a great run.

“We’ve got a big game on Thursday night and then two tough ones against Manchester City and Chelsea.

“People say the international break can stop the run but we’ve put an end to that and got three points, starting where we left off.

After conceding for the first time in 612 minutes of football, Austin feels that being a source of minor frustration is testament to the side’s recent success.

Saints have only ever enjoyed a longer run of clean sheets once in their history, which came when they kept eight consecutive clean sheets in all competitions back in August 1922.

Austin added: “If we can only be disappointed about not keeping a clean sheet for the seventh game running then it shows we’re doing well.”

Puel: McQueen grew in confidence

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel felt youngster Sam McQueen grew in confidence as the game went on during the 3-1 victory over Burnley on Sunday.

McQueen replaced the injured Matt Targett on 14 minutes against the Clarets and gave an accomplished display on his Premier League bow.

The 21-year-old was also felled in the box by Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the second-half after latching on to Dušan Tadić’s pass.

“He was little afraid in the first-half but after he took confidence and he produced a very good performance,” said Puel.

“It was interesting with his left foot because he’s a technical player and can give good crosses for the striker.

“For the first game, it was a very good one.”

Austin scored twice despite being ill against Burnley, reveals Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has revealed Charlie Austin overcame illness to lead Southampton to victory over Burnley.

The striker’s brace helped the Saints to a 3-1 win and gave him an impressive total of seven goals in his past six games.

Puel has regardless refused to guarantee Austin a starting place on Thursday when Southampton visit Inter Milan in the Europa League.

His so-far successful partnership with fellow goalscorer Nathan Redmond, however, could yet tempt a manager whose preference is to rotate his team.

‘He was a little ill this week and I didn’t know if he could play,’ said Puel of 27-year-old Austin.

'It is important for the team with the character and a good spirit of course, but all the players can make a good game around him.

'You saw a very good player and a very good team in the second half (against Burnley).

‘Nathan also came in with a very good performance, with very good technique. I asked him to shoot a bit more when he gets the chance and he did that.’

Asked if Austin, who also has four goals in four games against his former club Burnley, had made himself undroppable, the Frenchman responded: 'No, it’s important he doesn’t play all the games from the start.

'It’s important you don’t lose Charlie, it’s important he’s available every time, to keep a good physical level for every player.

'Charlie is not an endurance player; it’s important to keep him with his qualities, and we can change the team every game. It’s not possible, for me, for a player to start all the games every three days.

‘We can keep all the players with a good performance all the time and a good physical level. It’s important to conserve (their energy), to continue this work for the team, for the future.’

The result took Southampton up to eighth but left 14th-placed Burnley just a solitary point above the bottom three and their manager Sean Dyche warned his team of the need to improve their away form.

‘At home we play with bravery, fervour and energy,’ he said. 'That has to come from us away from home.

'We know where we are and we know we have to develop quickly. Our home form has been good and we’ve looked solid.

'Away we haven’t found that feel and we need that inner bravery to play.

‘We are playing within ourselves and we can’t do that.’
