Charlie Austin not guaranteed Inter Milan start, says Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel refused to confirm whether Charlie Austin would start for Southampton against Inter Milan after his two-goal cameo against Burnley.

Saints’ 3-1 victory over Burnley took Puel’s men up to eighth in the Premier League ahead of their Europa League trip to Inter Milan on Thursday.

Their total of 34 shots was the highest of any Premier League team in one match so far this season.

However, even after two further goals from Austin gave him a record of seven in his past six games, manager Claude Puel refused to guarantee he would start at Inter.

Asked if Austin’s impressive form made him undroppable, the Frenchman said: "No, it’s important he doesn’t play all the games from the start.

"It’s important you don’t lose Charlie, it’s important he’s available every time, to keep a good physical level for every player.

"Charlie is not an endurance player; it’s important to keep him with his qualities, and we can change the team every game. It’s not possible, for me, for a player to start all the games every three days.

“We can keep all the players with a good performance all the time, and a good physical level. It’s important to conserve [their energy], to continue this work for the team, for the future.”

Puel was also asked about the England prospects of Austin and the similarly-impressive Nathan Redmond, who scored the hosts’ second on the hour-mark at St. Mary’s.

Puel added: "I would like a selection for all of my players. Many have good qualities.

"Two players, for example, had a good game. I’m happy for [Austin], for us. He likes to score.

“The team plays good football and takes confidence from Charlie’s quality. At the moment he’s very important and interesting for us.”

Southampton 3-1 Burnley: Puel delight as McQueen shines

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel was delighted with Sam McQueen’s first Premier League appearance as Saints returned from the international break with a convincing 3-1 win over Burnley at St Mary’s.

The Southampton born 21-year-old was thrust into action after just 14 minutes when Matt Targett limped off.

Puel was happy with McQueen’s display, and the former Mountbatten School pupil may get more game time very soon, with Ryan Bertrand and now Targett both sidelined by hamstring injuries.

“For the left back, Sam can play today and we can see good things for his part,” said Puel, who confirmed Targett’s hamstring injury is different to the problem that prevented him for playing for the England under-21s.

“He played a good game also and has quality and the succession of this many games is difficult to play just with Cuco (Martina) and Sam.

“These are possibilities to change every time and this is difficult for the next games but for today I think Sam can play a good game and with his good left foot he gets in many good crosses for the striker and this is important.

“It is a new play for him but he can take confidence for the future and many good things for this player.”

With trips to Inter Milan and Manchester City now ahead, and with three of the club’s four first choice full backs sidelined with Cedric Soares also out, it leaves Puel’s rotation policy in a tricky spot.

Maya Yoshida is the only remaining option who can really fill in at full back after Martina and McQueen.

For now though, Puel is just happy with the win over Burnley, which came courtesy of 34 shots on goal, the most for a single team in a Premier League game so far this season.

“I would prefer to have less chances and more goals,” smiled Puel.

“I think of course it is interesting because we can see how we play out on the pitch to find the solution.

“It’s not just for this game. We can see all the games from the start of the season every time we have more chances and now it’s important to find the efficient and to score more.”

He added: “It was I think a very important game just after the international break.

“It was important to take a good result at home, and to see my players’ good attitude and a good spirit against a good team, a strong team in defence with good organisation. It was difficult to find a solution.

“We start very well in the game, after the injury of Targett we lost a little the control of the game and it was important to come back in the second half with good intentions and to put the ball on the pitch and have a solution.

“After this first goal it was easier to find other chances and I think today we can score many goals.”

Match In A Minute: Southampton 3-1 Burnley

Show/hide article…

Southampton continued their impressive recent form with an assured 3-1 victory over Burnley on Nissan Super Sunday.

After a frustrating first half at St. Mary’s, which saw Matt Targett and Steven Defour limp off injured, the hosts grabbed the initiative with three goals in a blistering 14-minute spell after the interval.

Charlie Austin’s sixth and seventh goals of the season, either side of Nathan Redmond’s sumptuous volley, did the damage as Claude Puel’s men moved up to eighth in the Premier League.

Saints’ win, however, came at the expense of losing their six-game streak without conceding a goal as Burnley striker - and lifelong Southampton fan - Sam Vokes converted a contentious penalty on 72 minutes.

Sean Dyche stunned by Mike Dean’s decision not to award Burnley penalty at Southampton

Sean Dyche stunned by Mike Dean’s decision not to award Burnley penalty at Southampton

Sean Dyche was left “stunned” by referee Mike Dean’s decision not to award Burnley a penalty in the first half of their 3-1 defeat at Southampton.

Dyche’s side were comfortably beaten in the end but they had a strong penalty appeal turned down with the game in the balance when Johann Berg Gudmundsson was stopped in his tracks by Virgil van Dijk.

“We knew they were a good side and in a good run of form, especially defensively,” the Clarets boss told Sky Sports.

"It’s very difficult when you come to these places, particularly when we can’t get a decision. I’m stunned by our penalty that wasn’t given. I’ve seen it back and am absolutely amazed.

"They’re a really good side and made it a really tough afternoon for us. But it’s not helpful when it’s 0-0 and you should have a penalty.

“Who knows after that? It changes the dynamic in the ground and the whole feel of the game.”

Both sides were awarded penalties in the second period, with former Burnley striker Charlie Austin doubling his tally to put Southampton 3-0 up before Sam Vokes grabbed a consolation.

Nathan Redmond was Southampton’s other scorer as they claimed a confidence-boosting win ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

Burnley’s Sean Dyche ‘stunned’ by penalty decision vs. Southampton

Show/hide article…

Burnley boss Sean Dyche was left “stunned” by referee Mike Dean’s decision not to award his side a penalty in the first half of their 3-1 Premier League defeat at Southampton.

Dyche’s side were comfortably beaten in the end but they had a strong penalty appeal turned down with the game in the balance when Johann Berg Gudmundsson was stopped in his tracks by Virgil van Dijk.

"The three points put us in the top half of the table,’’ said Austin, who now has seven goals in his last six games.

"If you look at our fixtures now, we’ve got Inter Milan in the Europa League then [Manchester] City away and Chelsea at home – so we’ve got two big games coming up in the league. This win gives us confidence going into the next few games.’’

The result left 14th-placed Burnley a point above the bottom three and took Southampton up to eighth ahead of their Europa League trip to Inter on Thursday.

The total of 34 shots from Southampton was the highest of any Premier League team in one match so far this season, but even after two further goals from Austin, manager Claude Puel refused to guarantee he would start at Inter.

Sean Dyche: This is why Burnley will struggle to survive this season

Show/hide article…

FRUSTRATED: Dyche couldn’t believe some of the decisions yesterday

The Clarets were condemned to a 3-1 defeat by old boy Charlie Austin at Southampton yesterday.

But Dyche was furious at Mike Dean’s decision not to award his team a first half spot-kick.

Iceland midfielder Johann Gudmundsson was clearly tripped by Virgil van Dijk but whistler Dean waved away the protests.

To make matters worse Saints were gifted a penalty of their own in controversial circumstances when Saints sub Sam McQueen went down theatrically in the box.

And Dyche moaned: “The big defining point was the penalty, it is impossible it is not a penalty. It is as simple as that.

Sean Dyche criticises Mike Dean after Southampton defeat

Show/hide article…

Sean Dyche criticised referee Mike Dean’s ‘impossible’ decision not to award Burnley a first-half penalty during their 3-1 Premier League defeat at Southampton.

With the game still goalless, Clarets midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson was brought down in the area by Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.

Dean allowed play to continue, and Southampton thereafter earned a convincing victory secured by two goals from Charlie Austin and another from Nathan Redmond.

Austin’s second was his fourth in four against his former club, and came from a penalty Dyche felt should not have been awarded.

With Burnley 3-0 down Sam Vokes scored another penalty, the 19th Dean has awarded since the start of the past Premier League season - a higher total than any other referee.

Dyche similarly described that one as ‘soft’, and he said: 'The defining point is our penalty - it’s impossible it’s not a penalty. We struggled two years ago to get decisions. We’re struggling so far this season. The first one against Swansea. Arsenal? We all know what happened there.

'I must make it clear it doesn’t take away from (Southampton) being a good side and being too good for us - but that doesn’t half make a difference. If we were 1-0 (up) the whole feeling changes.

‘I’ve seen their penalty. Wow. I don’t know where it lives anymore penalties like that in this game. I’m stunned. Our penalty is a soft one, theirs is incredibly soft. It’s beyond me how they’re given nowadays. Simulation? Possibly.’

The result left 14th-placed Burnley a point above the bottom three and took Southampton up to eighth ahead of their Europa League trip to Inter Milan on Thursday.
