Best Bets for Middlesbrough and Watford plus Burnley at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Bet that the gold’s buried among the skinny prices on what looks a thin day for fans of Premier League bling.

Defence was a jewel in Middlesbrough ’s crown in the Championship, but getting it to shine again in the Prem might yet have to come at the cost of much of the forward motion.

Still, ‘a point a game’ kept you up in the last five seasons. And a point off free-scoring Watford could be the limit of ambition when the chips are down today.

Take 4/6 about the ‘DRAW or Watford’ double chance punt.

The DRAW looks the pick of the 1X2 pokes if you’re committed to going that way.

Burnley ’s problem with the ‘point a game’ idea is they only get two shots on target per fixture.

That’s barely workable even if you’ve got Lionel Messi doing the finishing. Burnley have Andre Gray.

Except of course they haven’t, as he’s still away taking a long hard look at himself and meditating on the human rainbow.

Well-drilled hosts Southampton go for a seventh ‘clean sheet’ on the trot today – that’s a very fair punt at 5/6 (Paddy) .

Longshot hunters want ‘no goalscorer’ at 11/1 (Fred) - that standout price is about right on my forecasts.

Redmond: We’ll need to give it everything

Show/hide article…

The Clarets turned in a strong performance against the Gunners before the international break, only to concede an injury time goal that saw them slip to a 1-0 defeat.

But Redmond says he has seen enough from Sean Dyche’s side, who have already beaten Liverpool this term, to be wary of them.

"You can’t take any team lightly In the Premier League,” he said. “Anything can happen.

“I watched their last game, against Arsenal, and Arsenal didn’t score until injury time. It’s going to take everything from us, but we’ll go out there the same way.”

Indeed, Redmond says Saints will be heading in with high spirits, as they look to extend their six-match unbeaten run.

"We’ve taken a lot of confidence,” he said. “I think we knew with a new manager coming in at the start of the season it was going to take a little bit of time just to get used to his style of play, but we’re gradually building on it and we’re getting better week by week.”

Puel backs Romeu for big things

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel has backed Oriol Romeu to continue his excellent Saints form and be rewarded with a call-up to the Spanish national team.

Ahead of the Burnley match at St Mary’s today Puel was eager to praise Romeu’s superb work this term for Saints.

Romeu has been a key part of Puel’s side this season.

The St Mary’s chief has made clear in the past that he is a big admirer of the defensive midfielder.

Now Puel believes that his Saints form should earn the 25-year-old a call-up to the Spanish national team.

“I’m not surprised for his qualities,” he said. “He’s a very good player. I think the system of the team is interesting for him because along the front of the defence is a good place for him.

“He knows his work on every game. He’s very important for the team with good regularity. Every time he has a good level on his game.

“He’s a technical player and also strong in the recovery of the ball.

“It’s very interesting for the team and for me he’s a very good player for Southampton and I think it will help in selection for his country for the future because his level is very interesting.”

Liverpool star Mane reveals why he ignored United interest

Show/hide article…

Sadio Mane insists it was his decision to stay at Southampton when Manchester United bid £25million for him in the summer of 2015.

He was a prime target for then-Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal and it was presumed to be the Saints’ unwillingness to negotiate that prevented the deal, yet ahead of his first Liverpool-United derby, the Senegal international has denied that notion.

The 24-year-old has been in scintillating form for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds since joining for £30m this summer, with three goals in six Premier League games.

Speaking about the rumoured interest from United last summer, Mane told The Telegraph: 'In honesty, there were some clubs interested at that time but I never made any choices then. I did not say I thought of any club and I wanted to play there. That kind of interest gave me a lot confidence on the pitch and made me believe in myself, but I knew this was because of my hard work and I was in a good way.

'Ronald Koeman was not happy with all the rumours because he wanted me to stay, but it was not too complicated because for me, also, it was not time to go. When I spoke to him I told him, ‘No problem, I will stay’. It was my decision. I wanted to stay at Southampton.

'I was patient because I remember after the first year [in England] I knew it was better to focus on Southampton. In my head I thought I would be there a couple more years and prove something. I was convinced I still had to prove something, improve more and learn more before I moved to a bigger club. But then I knew when the right time was for me. The extra year helped me get better, and it is important for every player to go step by step.

'It was only when Liverpool came in [in June] that I never had a second thought and knew I wanted to join.

‘It was different because then was the right moment for me. I finally came to Liverpool and I was happy with that, and now I’m happy I am playing against Manchester United.’

With Liverpool welcoming Jose Mourinho’s new-look United team to Anfield on Monday Night Football, Mane also admits his confidence: ‘We are going to beat Manchester United. Of course. We all believe it. We are going to make it.’

Francis Benali admits he’s had to ‘grit his teeth’ during 1000-mile groundhop marathon for Cancer Research

Show/hide article…

Never mind the outcome of the game, in the eyes of many the biggest winner at St Mary’s on Sunday will surely be Franny Benali.

Shortly before his former club Southampton kick off against Burnley, Benali will cross the finish line, bringing an end to his latest remarkable fund-raising challenge.

Every day for the last two weeks he has run a marathon and cycled at least 75 miles in a bid to visit all 44 Premier League and Championship grounds in an incredible test of his fitness and mental strength.

Benali’s Big Race is the second epic endurance challenge he has set himself in a bid to raise £1m for Cancer Research.

Sunday’s final leg will take Benali from Brighton to Southampton, who he served for most of his professional career and where he became a cult hero for his wholehearted dedication to the club.

“I can’t wait to get back to St Mary’s,” the 47 year-old said.

“Not only will it signal the end of the challenge but that will also make it a success as it’s what we set out to do.”

Former left-back Benali began his fund-raising efforts with his Big Run two years ago when he ran from Newcastle to Southampton via every Premier League stadium – almost 1000 miles and the equivalent of two marathons a day every day for three weeks.

That raised £265,000 but Benali is determined to hit the £1m mark.

“Anybody who maybe questioned whether I was able to do the first one or thought it was a fluke, then maybe completing this one will emphasise that what I set out to do I can accomplish.

“I am happy to try and push my body and mind through the limits for a fantastic charity.

“There is a big element of it for me to do these kind of things to see how I respond under these circumstances, putting the body and mind under extreme strain and pressure.

“Maybe having that character, determination and mindset from sport has helped me get through this challenge as well.”

“Most days” have started and finished in the dark and after the recovery of ice baths, treatment and food. “If we (Benali and his support team) get seven hours sleep, that’s a good night,” Benali said… before it all starts again the next day.

A troublesome Achilles has hampered Benali as he has often being left with “no energy in my legs.”

Benali’s son Luke, part of the support team, described how he has been “emotionally drained” watching on.

“It has been incredibly tough, in every single way,” Benali said.

“There is the obvious physical element of it but probably even more so mentally.

“I’ve had to wrestle with my own thoughts at times and my body is screaming at me to stop or give up but I have been trying to overcome that with my mindset.”

How close has he come to giving up during the punishing challenge?

“I had a moment when we were in Norwich, my Achilles was really bad and I was sleeping in a bed that was from a bag and flops out on the floor.

“I needed to go to the toilet during the night and I could barely stand up and hobble to the toilet.

“I could hear the weather outside was really bad and the wind and rain and thought ‘I can barely walk, let alone run a marathon this morning.’

“The thought of getting up and going out in the elements was mentally tough. I could easily have backed out at that stage.”

But Benali, who has had close friends and family affected by cancer, added: “You cast your mind back to why you are trying to raise this money and the pain and suffering that people go through and the effect of cancer on individuals and their families so I just couldn’t quit or give up. I had to keep pushing through.

“No matter how much pain and suffering you are in it’s not going to last forever. It will go eventually, whether thats it n the next five minutes, hour, day or week.

"But ultimately you know it will pass and you just have to get your head around that moment, grit your teeth and get through it.”

Thankfully, there have been some much-needed lighter moments.

“I’ve found myself quite literally talking to sheep in the North Yorkshire Moors one day when I was just trotting along on my own one day,” he laughed.

“And apparently the first few days I was putting chain grease on my bits instead of chafing cream, until one of my friends who is into his cycling pointed out what I was actually using. At least my parts won’t rust!

“There have been lots of moments that bring a smile to the face, none more so than the support I’ve had from my support team and family and at each of the grounds it has been incredible.

“Any well wisher has just given me a little lift whenever they’ve cheered us off.”

Perhaps the biggest cheer will come at around 3.40pm today when he crosses the finish line.

“I am still very much focused on grinding the miles out between here and St Mary’s but that will be a moment to cherish,” Benali said, ahead of today’s penultimate bike ride.

“But that is not the reason for doing the challenge. I want the donations to keep rolling in and get to that £1m mark and hopefully help the charity find a cure for cancer because ultimately that’s the main objective in all of this.”

Premier League clockwatch: Middlesbrough vs Watford and Southampton vs Burnley

Show/hide article…

Afternoon all. We have two ‘Super’ Sunday matches ahead of us this afternoon which are Middlesbrough vs Watford at 1.30pm followed by Southampton vs Burnley at 4pm.

You can follow all the goals right here thanks to the futuristic powers of our loyal and obedient Roboblogger.

In the meantime, here are the previews

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri wants to avoid a repeat of the loss at Burnley when his side play at Middlesbrough.

The Hornets were beaten 2-0 at Turf Moor in their most recent away fixture in the Premier League and responded by twice fighting back to draw 2-2 at home to Bournemouth prior to the international break.

“It will be a very hard game,” Mazzarri said. “We have to be focused, to play our game, to play very well defensively. We have to keep in mind the game against Burnley so we know what mistakes not to repeat.”

Watford captain Troy Deeney was scathing of his team at Burnley, saying the Hornets had been “bullied” by the Clarets, who wanted victory more.

Mazzarri added: "Troy said what we all thought in the dressing room. Even me. I was the first one to go out and say the same thing.

"We admitted that we played very bad. We have been working on it for it not to happen again. I promised myself that Burnley would not happen again.

Watford last kept a clean sheet in April in a win at West Brom, while they have conceded 13 Premier League goals this season, while scoring 12. The Burnley loss was the first time Watford had failed to score since the defeat at Liverpool in early May.

Southampton manager Claude Puel admits he may have to rest key players and even turn to the club’s academy as Saints begin a hectic period of fixtures against Burnley.

The Clarets will be the first of seven opponents in 22 days for Southampton, who may also have an eye on Thursday’s mouthwatering Europa League clash against Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Saints then play Manchester City and Chelsea either side of an EFL Cup tie against Sunderland, before the reverse fixture against Inter and a tricky trip to Hull.

Puel will be without four first-team players this weekend as both full-backs, Cedric and Ryan Bertrand, are out with ankle and hamstring injuries respectively, along with Jeremy Pied and Sofiane Boufal, who are nursing knee problems.

Shane Long is also a doubt with a hamstring strain.

“It’s important to recover all these players because in some positions we have the possibility to change the players with a good level,” Puel said.

"We have (Matt) Targett or Cuko (Martina), they can play good games without problem. But with all these games every three days it’s important to recover and change the team and keep all the time the energy.

“It’s difficult. If a player plays every three days it’s not possible to keep a good performance or physical level. It’s important to recover these players quickly.”
