Benali’s Big Race: Marathon man has the finish line in his sights

Show/hide article…

It was at about 1.30pm on Thursday that my phone flashed up with a message. It was from Luke Benali and he was replying to a request for an update about his dad. “His body is broken,” it read. “Achilles is in bits. I am clueless as to how he’s still on his feet.” Yet Francis Benali was not just still on his feet. He had just run a marathon. It was his 12th in 12 days.

And he was getting changed into his cycling kit and preparing for his 12th bike ride in excess of 75 miles in those same 12 consecutive days. He had been running with a grade one tear in his left hamstring but, of greatest concern, was the eye-watering pain of a horribly inflammed Achilles tendon on his right leg.

We’re being more resolute, says Fleming

Show/hide article…

In a game of few clear-cut openings for either side, Saints earned another point in the Under-18 Premier League.

And Fleming was particularly pleased with how his side defended after their work on the training field.

He said: “It was scrappy and it certainly wasn’t one for the purists on a windy day but we dug in there and were very resolute.

“Parkesy hasn’t had a shot to save in the whole game really and we had one very good chance and a couple of others.

“We’re delighted with a clean sheet as it’s always a difficult place to come. We had quite a young team out with some of the older boys involved with Radhi and Martin in the Under-23s so there is lots of positives.”

Fleming added: “We’ve worked hard in training in terms of being harder to beat and being a bit more professional in how we do things.

“We’re starting to be very hard to play and score against which is obviously the aim.”

Puel calls Saints’ squad prepared for upcoming busy phase

Show/hide article…

Manager Claude Puel admits he may have to rest key players and even turn to the club’s academy as Southampton begin a hectic period of fixtures against Burnley on Sunday.

The Clarets will be the first of seven opponents in 22 days for Southampton, who may also have an eye on Thursday’s mouthwatering Europa League clash against Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Saints then play Manchester City and Chelsea either side of an EFL Cup tie against Sunderland, before the reverse fixture against Inter and a tricky trip to Hull.

Puel will be without four first-team players this weekend as both full-backs, Cedric and Ryan Bertrand, are out with ankle and hamstring injuries respectively, along with Jeremy Pied and Sofiane Boufal, who are nursing knee problems.

Shane Long is also a doubt with a hamstring strain.

‘It’s important to recover all these players because in some positions we have the possibility to change the players with a good level,’ Puel said.

'We have (Matt) Targett or Cuco (Martina), they can play good games without problem. But with all these games every three days it’s important to recover and change the team and keep all the time the energy.

‘It’s difficult. If a player plays every three days it’s not possible to keep a good performance or physical level. It’s important to recover these players quickly.’

Puel added he may turn to the club’s youngsters for back-up in defence, including 21-year-old Sam McQueen, who is yet to make his senior league debut.

‘Sam McQueen is making progress at left back and is interesting for the future and perhaps we can see him in the next few games,’ Puel said.

'At right back a very young player in Yan Valery, but he is a very young player and I think it is too early to play with him. It is not possible.

‘We also have a solution with Maya Yoshida. He can play at right back but without the performance of Cuco or Cedric.’

Boufal’s return is particularly anticipated given Southampton broke their transfer record by paying Lille £16million for the forward in the summer.

He arrived with a knee injury but is now back in training and Puel is hopeful the Moroccan can feature in the next few games.

‘He came back to training last week. He improved every time but I think it is not for the moment, it is too early to see him but his knee improves,’ Puel said.

‘I hope we can have Sofiane for the next games, perhaps on the bench, and step by step he can progress with the squad.’

U18 Report: Brighton 0-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

Craig Fleming’s side took a valuable point from the AMEX Elite Performance Centre, after a tightly-contested game.

The first action of the game came on 16 minutes, when Adam Parkes did well to parry an inswinging free-kick from Danny Mandroiu.

Mandriou looked lively in the opening exchanges and was involved again when his low shot was comfortably collected by Parkes.

Both sides soon settled into their rhythm and Saints began to grow into the contest. First Jonathan Afolabi was almost presented with an opportunity after a slip by Danny Barker, before Will Smallbone’s deep free-kick towards the back post evaded everyone.

Callum Slattery came closest to opening the scoring though, after neat interplay in midfield allowed him the opportunity to shoot – only to see his right-footed effort from distance go wide.

Brighton were then denied by some superb defending, when Isaac Hutchinson found space before being shut down by a combination of Christoph Klarer and Aaron O’Driscoll to see his shot blocked valiantly.

The second-half began in similarly scrappy fashion. Smallbone saw his free-kick headed out, before the hosts broke through Mandroiu, only for an excellent recovery run and challenge from Harlem Hale to deny Max Sanders.

Chances were few and far between, and Michael Obafemi was introduced to the action on the hour mark to try and break the deadlock.

His endeavour helped win a free-kick moments later but when Slattery’s delivery was clipped in, Afolabi was adjudged to be in an offside position.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, good work from Hale earned Saints a corner, but Smallbone’s cross was headed wide by Christoph Klarer.

Slattery then looked to replicate his goal of the month contender against Aston Villa when he tried an audacious effort from distance, this time seeing his shot rise high and wide over Tom McGill’s goal.

Neither side could prise an opening in the last ten minutes and Fleming’s side preserved their clean sheet to continue a strong start to the campaign.

Puel: Burnley will be difficult

Show/hide article…

The Clarets fell to an unfortunate 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Turf Moor in their last outing before the international break and are searching for their first win on the road this season.

Sean Dyche’s newly-promoted side are currently 14th in the table, with seven points from seven games, and Puel reserved praise for their spirit.

“Burnley is a difficult team with a lot of solidarity and good organisation. It’s difficult to get chances against them.

“It will be important for us to play good football with intensity and to be aggressive.

“We will see our performance for this first game (since the international break) but the support of our fans will be important for this game.”

Dyche relishing St Mary’s trip

Show/hide article…

The newly-promoted Clarets have made a solid start to the season, with home victories against Liverpool and Watford helping them to seven points from seven games and leaving them 14th in the table.

After late disappointment against Arsenal at Turf Moor before the interanational break, Dyche’s men will look to avenge that by picking up their first points on the road.

“There is a bigger divide in the Premier League and I’m not sure on the stats but it seems that home form is very important to clubs and often better than their away form,” said Dyche.

“That aside, we know we need to take games on away from home and it hasn’t been for the lack of trying.

“We were well beaten at Chelsea who were far too strong on the day and at Leicester it was quite a close game in the first half.

“I said after we had a mad four or five minutes which cost us the result and we lost our way for about 20 minutes.

“Other than that I was reasonably pleased with how we performed which is why we’ve stuck with the same system.

"We beat Watford and then pushed Arsenal very close too. You’ve got to make sense of what’s behind the result and see how the team are operating.

“I think we do a good job of that here with my staff and getting feedback from the players.”

Saints head into the fixture looking to extend their six game unbeaten run, and Dyche has been impressed with the way the club have adapted quickly under Claude Puel.

Dyche added: “They seem to have re-evaluated quite well and the manager has changed the format of what he wants from the players.

“They’re showing they are capable and it’s a very good club I think. I know Ross Wilson from my time at Watford and he speaks very highly of the working environment there.

“I think yet again it’s another good challenge for us and we look forward to them all but not in a flippant way of ‘little old Burnley’ are going for a day out – we want to win games.”
