International recognition for Saints’ girls

Show/hide article…

Sophia, who plays for Saints’ Under-16s, will head to Lithuania between 24th October and 30th October, with England set to face the hosts, Slovenia and Russia over a period of ten days.

Speaking about her call-up, Sophia said: “It means everything to me to represent my country at such a young age, and I’m really excited to be joining back up with the team again.

“I’d like to think this shows that you shouldn’t give up on what you want to try and achieve, but always be ready for the challenge that awaits you.”

Sophia joined Southampton’s Regional Talent Club after Saints were awarded a Tier 1 licence from The FA last year, having been successful during a trial.

Girls’ Technical Director Lois Fidler said: “Sophia’s selection is an important milestone for her personally and for Southampton FC.

“A call-up for an England national team involved in a UEFA qualifying tournament is a first for Sophia and the Regional Talent Club.

“It will provide her with exposure to the next level and support her on-going personal development. It will also be an opportunity for her to share her experiences back at the club to inspire her teammates.”

Further to Sophia’s call-up, 14 players across the Under-14 and Under-16 age groups will be attending the Regional Excellent Camps, which form part of the Elite Female Pathway.

On the international stage, Ella Morris and Alisha Ware from Saints’ Under-14s squad have been included in the forthcoming England Women’s Under-15 Training Camp, while Under-16s player Mia Cruickshank is on standby.

Saints pair help England to 5-0 romp

Show/hide article…

Saints duo Jack Stephens and Nathan Redmond helped England Under-21s wrap up their road to Euro 2017 in style with a crushing 5-0 win over Bosnia.

Stephens played the full 90 minutes, while Redmond came on for the closing stages, with James Ward-Prowse being rested.

Tammy Abraham’s brace and goals from former Tyro league starlet John Swift, Josh Onomah and Duncan Watmore sealed their qualification campaign in Walsall.

Victory means the Young Lions, who had already reached next year’s tournament in Poland as Group 9 winners, end the campaign unbeaten.

They brushed off the loss of manager Gareth Southgate, who took over the senior side after Sam Allardyce’s departure, and now have the chance to exorcise the ghosts of Euro 2015 after they went out at the group stage.

After Thursday’s 1-0 victory in Kazakhstan sealed qualification interim boss Aidy Boothroyd made nine changes, including starting Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish and handing Abraham a full debut.

The hosts drew 0-0 in Sarajevo, one of only three points Bosnia have won in qualifying, last November and the rock-bottom visitors enjoyed a plucky opening five minutes without threatening.

England slowly gained control though and two quickfire goals put them in command.

First Reading midfielder Swift thumped the hosts ahead after 14 minutes when he collected Grealish’s pass and arrowed a 25-yard drive into the top corner.

Four minutes later Abraham, the Sky Bet Championship’s eight-goal top scorer, marked his full bow as he cashed in from six yards after Kenan Piric parried Onomah’s effort.

From then the hosts were dominant and Sunderland’s Watmore fired over from the edge of the area after 30 minutes.

England’s victory was never in doubt once Swift opened the scoring and the marauding Watmore caused problems and he forced Piric into a smart save 10 minutes before half-time.

Despite being a spectator for the majority of the half Christian Walton was finally called into action when he turned over Armin Cerimagic’s drive to maintain England’s 2-0 lead at the break.

The hosts continued to press in the second half and, four minutes in, Tottenham’s Onomah made it 3-0 when he capitalised on some questionable defending to turn and fire low into the corner.

Watmore got in on the act after 62 minutes when he raced clear and slotted past Piric and the goalkeeper turned Abraham’s header over 90 seconds later.

But the Bristol City striker, on loan from Chelsea, did grab his second in the 68th minute when he chipped over Piric after Watmore’s pass.

Substitute Demarai Gray had the chance to make it 6-0 but Piric gathered his low effort as the hosts settled for five.

Saints duo feature in England Under-21 win

Show/hide article…

Stephens played the duration of the clash at the Banks’s Stadium and helped the Three Lions to a clean sheet, while Redmond replaced Jack Grealish late on.

First-half strikes in quick succession from John Swift and Championship top scorer Tammy Abraham saw them establish control.

Swift took in Grealish’s pass before unleashing an unstoppable drive past Kenan Piric on 14 minutes, before Abraham followed up after Josh Onomah had seen his effort pushed away four minutes later.

England were rarely troubled, but, towards the end of the first-half, Armin Cerimagic forced a smart save from Three Lions debutant Christian Walton.

Aidy Boothroyd’s men emerged for the second-half in equally dominant fashion, and it took five minutes to extend the lead.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Onomah found the net with a low right-footed strike into the corner on his Under-21 debut.

And just after the hour mark, Duncan Watmore got himself on the scoresheet after latching on to Grealish’s incisive through ball.

On 68, Abraham had his second of the afternoon when Watmore picked out his clever run, before the Bristol City loanee placed a delightful chip over the onrushing Piric.

Stephens’ Saints teammate Nathan Redmond joined the action on 73 minutes, while James Ward-Prowse was an unused substitute with qualification already secured.
