Tadić driven by self-improvement

Show/hide article…

Tadić’s has enjoyed an impressive run of form during Saints six game unbeaten run in all competitions, scoring his first goal of the season against West Ham United.

And despite adding to that by scoring and assisting twice against Moldova on Thursday night for Serbia, the playmaker insists that players should always be looking to push their boundaries.

He said: “I’m that kind of person who likes always to improve myself and I think I can play much, much better as well as my team.

“This is always like that. You try to push yourself much more and I will try to improve further and cause more danger for opponents to make our fans happy.

“You want to show your best in every game and in training. You always need to be looking to improve your game to help your team take points.”

Claude Puel’s new system is starting to click after a natural transitional period at the start of the campaign.

That has seen Tadić’s role change slightly and it is something he is enjoying being a part of.

He said: “I used to play the number 10 role but we now have a lot of players in the middle.

“We are told that sometimes we need to stretch opponents which means I will have more space on the pitch.

“This is really important as I used to play in a 4-2-3-1 system, when you have wingers who stretch opponents which makes it easier for me.

“I think Arsenal was the best 30 minutes in the season as there was a lot of rotation which is difficult to defend against.

“We can be really dangerous when we’re like that.”

Feature: Saints’ preparations on the road

Show/hide article…

Just how tough was the week on the road, with three away games?

It was the biggest challenge we’ll probably face this year, of course that depends on how we progress in the competition. It was a challenge for the players, and all of the staff.

The sports science team, the medical staff, the coaches and those who work with the team from a logistical point of view were all involved. It was a big team effort to get the players in the right condition physically and mentally to perform and each member of the support team contributes to that.

It’s credit to the players, the coaching staff and the medical staff that the players were ready. It’s a bigger workload than we’re used to, so it took a big effort from everybody. Ultimately, three away games in a week will always take its toll on everyone.

How meticulous did the planning have to be?

Before we got to this period we were always confident the players would be ready. The matches and travel can take quite a bit out of them, so we had to adjust the training levels and that took some planning.

We had to ensure through our training, right back in pre-season, that the players were ready for a week like we had. We have systematically designed training to ensure the players have experienced and coped with training loads in excess of three games a week. In doing so, the players are accustomed to the stresses of the fixture congestion and are able to recovery more effectively. This increase is not only seen in on-field training, but the injury prevention and strength based work also needs to increase to allow maximum performance.

The travel issues around Israel impacted on sleep, training and nutrition, which are the main factors for recovery. We had to plan everything, so we sent Tom Kenton, the chef, out to Israel in advance, while Ros [Wheeler] and Hugo [Scheckter] were important in terms of the logistics and planning of flight times.

We already know the schedule and the finer details for Milan and Prague.

What factors are key to recovery for players?

Recovery started immediately after the game with rehydration, nutrition and ice baths. We then went back to the hotel for a meal and soft tissue and compression treatment. We had an active recovery session in the pool in the morning after the game prior to breakfast before heading home.

Timings were such to allow sleep that is vital for recovery and the foods were carefully selected to encourage recovery and muscle regeneration.

People will have heard about the delays coming back from Israel. What sort of impact did that have on preparation for Leicester?

We knew it was going to be a long day anyway, that’s why in the morning we put back the start of the recovery session and we allowed players to sleep in. That then accounted for any delays, so we took that precaution.

The delay wasn’t ideal, but we had some recovery equipment with us that can be used on planes, buses – or in waiting rooms! We made the best of the situation that we were in.

Some players didn’t travel to Leicester, how were they looked after?

Obviously some of the boys didn’t travel and because of that we had to make sure they had the right programme while the rest of the team was away.

They trained at a very high level to make sure they came back in at the same level. Pascal [Placque] and Bill [Styles] stayed behind to make sure the group that didn’t travel kept up their training outputs to ensure fitness levels were maintained.

You only had one training session to prepare for Leicester City, so the coaching staff must have been pleased with the level of performance from the players?

We were really pleased. It helped being on a good run of form, and the boys who didn’t travel picked the group up with their application and enthusiasm. They were a bit brighter and bubblier than the boys who did travel and they did a really good job of pushing them on.

Other factors played a part. For example, the analyst team on the plane back had video ready for the coaches and players to debrief the Be’er Sheva game and then start looking ahead to Leicester.

In fact, the Leicester game was one of the highest in terms of physical outputs from the players that we’ve had in a long time. So off the back of not just that week, but the week before that as well, to have the final game as our highest physical output is pretty impressive.

Shane Long declared fit for Republic of Ireland’s clash with Moldova

Show/hide article…

Shane Long will be fit for the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier with Moldova tomorrow night, despite suffering an injury scare towards the end of the 1-0 win over Georgia on Thursday.

The Southampton forward is nursing an Achilles problem after an opponent raked his studs down the back of his leg.

There were some suggestions after Thursday’s victory that his substitution was the result of a muscle injury, but it is understood the injury is more of a flesh wound and the player will be able to play through the pain barrier.

Martin O’Neill will be boosted by that news as the Ireland manager must plan for the game in Chisinau without the suspended Jeff Hendrick and injured Robbie Brady.

Burnley midfielder Hendrick misses out due to an accumulation of yellow cards, however he has opted to travel with the Ireland squad, while Brady is set to return to his club, Norwich City, after suffering concussion.

In their absence Glenn Whelan, a veteran of 76 caps, is set to resume his partnership with James McCarthy, while Wes Hoolahan is in line for his first start since the 3-0 loss to Belgium in the Euro finals.

O’Neill is tight on options and is missing, Harry Arter, among others.

The busy-bee Bournemouth midfielder remains committed to the Irish cause but he’ s not available for World Cup duty due to a tight hamstring.

Speculation about Arter’s intentions swirled around on Thursday night after a suggestion on social media he was about to switch allegiance to England – Arter has yet to play a competitive minute for Ireland despite making his debut 16 months ago.

The uncertainty put O’Neill in a tricky position before he left Dublin yesterday.

‘I was speaking to Harry myself (on Saturday) but he didn’t mention anything about going elsewhere,’ said O’Neill. 'I just asked how he was. The hamstring was not pulled but it’s very, very tight.

‘He said he had been carrying it for a little while.’

O’Neill was adamant he wanted Arter to stay in the Irish fold. ‘There’s always a place here for him (Arter),’ said O’Neill of the 26-year-old who has made three appearances, all in friendlies

'I’d like him to play for us if possible. He has been around the scene for a little while and knows he is well thought of around our place.

‘It has been injuries more than anything else that has prevented him from making his competitive debut for us. I’ll obviously speak to him and see how it goes.’

Arter has never had an injury-free run under O’Neill but he may have expected to start against Serbia last month when McCarthy was missing.

Instead, Whelan played 90 minutes and Arter was left on the bench.

Just where Arter’s’ ‘place’ is under O’Neill remains uncertain. Pointedly, perhaps, Arter’s Twitter account was silent yesterday.

Ryan Bertrand forced off through injury during England’s clash against Malta

Show/hide article…

England suffered an early injury blow during their World Cup qualifier against Malta at Wembley.

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand limped off after just 19 minutes with what appeared to be a pulled hamstring, to be replaced by Tottenham counterpart Danny Rose.

Rose himself didn’t start the game due to a tight hamstring, but was asked to play 70 minutes for his country under the arch.

Bertrand’s injury will be a concern for Saints as the former Chelsea full-back has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign on the south coast.

Roberto Mancini attends England vs Malta with speculation he could land Three Lions job

He missed the start of the season with a knee problem but has gone on to make four starts in the top flight so far.

He has been replaced in the squad by Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs who will travel with the squad to face Slovenia on Tuesday.

Daniel Sturridge’s header put England ahead in the qualifier before Dele Alli made it 2-0 as they bid to maintain their 100 per cent record in Gareth Southgate’s first game in charge.
