Striker kicked out of Italy squad for failing to shake his manager’s hand

Show/hide article…

Former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle has been kicked out of the Italy squad for “disrespectful behaviour.”

The Italian FA (FIGC) announced on Friday morning that coach Gianpiero Ventura had “excluded” the forward from the squad to play FY Macedonia on Sunday in Skopje.

Pelle refused to shake his manager’s hand and stormed to his seat in the dugout after being substituted with the Italians needing an equaliser in Thursday night’s draw with Spain.

Ventura tried to play down the incident after the 1-1 draw in Turin . “These things happen,” he said. “I think Graziano was more angry at himself and the way his performance went than anything else.”

But a statement from the FIGC has since confirmed his removal from the squad.

"Being part of the national team involves the sharing of values of your teammates and the famous blue shirt.

"This starts with respect towards staff, teammates and supporters.

“The player will today return to his club.”

Pelle later posted an apology on Instagram: "Unfortunately, I have once again made a mistake.

"It was unacceptable behavior, against the coach in the first place and also to my teammates, who have always shown to have team spirit in a fantastic Italy group that we all belong to.

“Like any great mistake, you always suffer the consequences. And it is only right that I take full responsibility. I must ask from the heart for forgiveness from everyone.”

Pelle moved to Shandong Lueng for £13million this summer to sign a big-money deal.

The 31-year-old earns £125,000 per week in the Chinese Super League and will return to Asia shortly.

He was linked to Juventus and Lazio during the summer, while a move to play under his former national team boss Antonio Conte at Chelsea was also a possibility until he received the eye-watering offer.

Former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle says sorry for handshake snub after being thrown out of Italy squad

Show/hide article…

Former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle has been axed from the Italy squad for disrespectful behaviour.

The striker has been punished for refusing to shake manager Giampiero Ventura’s hand when he was substituted during Thursday night’s World Cup qualifier against Spain.

Pelle, who left Southampton for Shandong Luneng in the summer, has apologised for the snub but has been ordered to leave the Italy camp ahead of Sunday’s trip to Macedonia.

A statement from the The Italian FA (FIGC) read: "Being part of the national team involves the sharing of values of your teammates and the famous blue shirt.

“This starts with respect towards staff, teammates and supporters. The player will today return to his club.”

In a message posted on his Instagram page on Friday, Pelle wrote: “Unfortunately, it’s happened again, I’ve messed things up.

“It was unacceptable behaviour, firstly against the coach and also, towards my team mates, who have always shown me to have important values in this fantastic Italy group we belong to.

“Like any great mistake, I accept the consequences. And it is only right that I take responsibility. I must offer my apologies from my heart to everyone.”

Ex-Saint booted out Italy squad

Show/hide article…

EX-SAINTS striker Graziano Pelle has been booted out of the Italy squad after snubbing a handshake from Azzurri coach Gianpiero Ventura.

Pelle, who left Saints in a big-money move to Chinese side Shandong Luneng for £13m in the summer, was substituted after an hour of Italy’s 1-1 World Cup qualifier draw with Spain.

The 31-year-old has since apologised for refusing to shake Ventura’s hand, but the Italian football federation has announced that Pelle has been sent packing and will miss Sunday’s match in Macedonia.

“It was unacceptable behaviour, firstly against the coach and also, towards my team mates, who have always shown me to have important values in this fantastic Italy group we belong to.

“Like any great mistake, I accept the consequences. And it is only right that I take responsibility. I must ask offer my apologies from my heart to everyone.”

Ventura, who replaced now Chelsea boss Antonio Conte as Italy boss, played down the events in Turin on Thursday night.

“These things happen,” he said. “I think Graziano was more angry at himself and the way his performance went than anything else.”

Despite his manager’s understanding tone, the Italian football authorities took a dim view on Pelle’s actions.

A statement read: "Being part of the national team involves the sharing of values of your teammates and the famous blue shirt.

"This starts with respect towards staff, teammates and supporters.

“The player will today return to his club.”

Pelle signed for Saints in an £8m deal from Feyenoord in 2014 and was a big player for the club under Ronald Koeman, scoring 23 Premier League goals in two seasons.

Sadio Mane, Christian Benteke… but no Zlatan or Pogba - pundits’ top summer signings

Show/hide article…

As the Premier League takes a break, we challenged the Soccer Saturday pundits to pick their top summer signing.

Paul Merson, Charlie Nicholas, Phil Thompson and Matt Le Tissier have all delivered their verdict but while one Liverpool player has caught the eye, Manchester United’s star names Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have made less of an impression.

Read on to find out who the pundits have plumped for - and tell us your top signing so far by leaving a comment below or tweeting us @SkyFootball

This is a leftfield one, but I’m going for Nathan Redmond. He played up front at the start of the season and it didn’t really work, but he gave it everything and now he’s in a supporting role and a key to Southampton’s impressive form.

For what they paid for him - around £10m - and the prices in football these days, he’s a bargain. People will say Zlatan Ibrahimovic as he was on a free but he’s not when you’re paying him £300,000 a week. He’s costing Manchester United a year what Southampton are paying Redmond for five seasons.

I also think he’s bang unlucky not to be in the England squad. He’s performed every time he’s been in the England U21s and now Gareth Southgate has made the step up, he’s got to be thinking ‘why am I not in his squad? What do I have to do?’ It’s a no-brainer for me.

This is not just because he’s scoring goals again but because he changes the philosophy of this Crystal Palace team.

His presence in the box is something they’ve desperately needed for a number of season and gives Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend an additional option.

If there’s a team that have been transformed by a signing then it is Palace.

If you’re looking at a player who has transformed a side and injected what they needed then it’s Sadio Mane.

People talk about this Liverpool team suddenly challenging for the title but what’s the difference really been? I think it’s all about Mane and the pace he has injected.

It is the one thing this Liverpool team lacked. Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana have all been great but they were all there last year and he’s brought the best out of them.

His pace to drag defenders back allows these players play and I think he’s had a massive impact. In a footballing sense, this guy does everything at 100 miles per hour.

He destroyed Arsenal in that second half and all of us said he was overpriced but he’s looking like a snip at a fraction of Paul Pogba’s price.

As much as it hurts me, I’d have to go with Mane as well. He has been outstanding in his first few games at Liverpool.

I think him and Adam Lallana were the two most painful to lose as I enjoyed watching them. They’re the guys that get you on the edge of your seat and are who the fans pay the money to watch.

I think if he finds the consistency that was missing at times at Southampton, and he did have periods where he didn’t look particularly interested, then he certainly gives Liverpool a better chance of winning the league.

Butterfield returns to Saints

Show/hide article…

Butterfield got started in his new role last week and will work alongside Under-18s Coach Craig Fleming, having returned to a club he made 54 appearances for as a player after joining in the summer of 2010.

And after leaving his player-coach role at Exeter City, the 36-year-old can’t wait to get started at an Academy that he is more than familiar with.

He said: “I’m delighted to be back at the club which is always moving forward and progressing which is something I want to do on a personal level.

“To be playing a part with the Under-18s who certainly have a pathway into the first-team at the club, is something I’m really excited about.

“To be joining a strong staff team that are already here at the Academy will develop me as a person as well.

“It’s a very important part of the club and a part that is relied upon because we players that come through the system to be in first-team.

“If I can contribute slightly in playing a part in the boys development as players and as men to make that step into the Under-23s initially and then the first-team, that’s what it is all about for me coming back.”

After making a seamless transition from playing to coaching, Butterfield also paid tribute to his former employers.

He added: “I’m thankful to Exeter for that. The transition into coaching from being a player was smooth.

“Now being back at Southampton the environment is completely different because you’re helping the Academy players instead of trying to step onto the pitch yourself.

“It’s a great place to come and work every day and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”
