WATCH & VOTE: Premier League Goals of the week

Show/hide article…

Watch and vote for the best Premier League goal of the weekend, including strikes from Heung-Min Son and Philippe Coutinho.

Demarai Gray - Man Utd v LEICESTER: It was a bit too late from the Leicester substitute Gray as the Premier League champions suffered a 4-0 first-half thrashing from United, but it was a fantastic strike from the teenager nonetheless.

Junior Stanislas - BOURNEMOUTH v Everton: The Cherries were in the mood for an upset on Saturday and stopped Everton’s unbeaten run in the process with an unstoppable goal from Stanislas in the first half.

Theo Walcott - ARSENAL v Chelsea: The Gunners had not beaten their London rivals in the Premier League since 2011, but a delightful strike from Walcott saw them ease to a 3-0 victory.

Heung-Min Son - Middlesbrough v TOTTENHAM: Son has been in fine form for Tottenham in recent games and scored both goals during Spurs’ 2-1 victory at the Riverside Stadium with his second particularly stunning.

Philippe Coutinho - LIVERPOOL v Hull: It was a rout from Jurgen Klopp’s men on Saturday, and another fantastic Philippe Coutinho strike was the pick of the 5-1 victory.

Juan Mata - MAN UTD v Leicester: The Spain international added the second of Man Utd’s four goals in some style, starting a five-minute period that saw a three goals from the home side to see off the Foxes.

Fernando Llorente - SWANSEA v Man City: Llorente finally found his scoring touch for the Swans and got them level against Man City on Saturday in some style, although the hosts eventually fell to a 3-1 defeat.

Steven Davis: This is why Southampton are on a winning run

Show/hide article…

Saints kicked off the season with two points from four games, as new boss Claude Puel’s diamond formation baffled his stars. But Sunday’s 3-0 win over West Ham saw Southampton make it four wins on the spin without conceding. And midfield ace Davis reckons it’s all down to getting their heads around Puel’s grand plan.

“It was always going to take a bit of time, but whenever you get off to a slow start of course you question things,” said Davis. “But it was important that the manager showed us his philosophy and showed us how he wants to do things. “It’s important that the lads bought into that and you can see that now after the four wins on the bounce and we can seeing everyone’s believing in it. “There’s confidence in the team and we’re getting back to where we should be.

“We’ve seen an improvement in each game. Obviously it was going take a bit of time to get used to the new system and I think we’re adapting to it well now and understanding our roles and responsibilities a bit better. “Every manager’s different, everybody’s got their own philosophies, how they want to play and their own personalities. “The new manager is no different from that. He’s his own man, he demands certain ways and we are reaping the rewards of our work on the training ground.”

Puel has ignored form to keep his top talents fit, with goal machine Charlie Austin benched last week before coming back to continue his goal run against the Hammers. And Davis reckons the Frenchman’s rotation policy has helped keep the Saints firing in all competitions. The Northern Ireland international said: “It keeps everyone on their toes. Everybody put in a good performance. There’s good healthy competition.”

PICTURED: Bleary-eyed Southampton stars hit the town after West Ham win

Show/hide article…

The Saints thrashed West Ham 3-0 at the Olympic Stadium yesterday. And it didn’t take them long to hit central London as the stars headed to the Libertine nightclub to celebrate. They were joined by England defender Nathaniel Clyne and former Spurs ace Aaron Lennon.

And goalkeeper Fraser Forster looked like he’d had a particularly good time… Austin meanwhile – who scored the opener against the Hammers – can be seen with some stains on his shirt. The Southampton win came amid widespread criticism of West Ham’s new home, the London Stadium.

The club have been forced to deny claims that “fake” chants were played from stadium speakers during the fixture. And there have been several incidents of violence among fans off the pitch. West Ham currently sit in the bottom three after recording just one win this season. Southampton though, are looking good in 9th spot.

Fonte “waiting” for improved Southampton contract offer

Show/hide article…

JOSE Fonte has revealed that he’s still “waiting” for an improved contract offer from Saints.

But the defender insists any question marks over his future aren’t a distraction and is focused on another “great season” at St Mary’s.

The club were said to have been optimistic that their captain would accept a significant pay rise on his current deal that expires in 2018, but the 32-year-old claims there has been little progress over his future despite talks.

“There’s nothing on the table, so I’m waiting,” Fonte said. “I’ll see what happens.

“I’m just focusing on performing above all and we’ll see what happens.

“We haven’t agreed anything, so it’s just talks.”

It is believed that Fonte had been offered a pay rise during the summer to bring him in line with the club’s top earners.

However, there were no plans to offer Fonte an extension on his current deal, with Saints aware that their skipper would be a few months off his 35th birthday and nearing the end of his playing career by the time his contract ends in the summer of 2018.

And, although the club were hopeful that Fonte, who attracted interest from Manchester United in the transfer window, would take the pay increase, it seems a solution is yet to be found.

When pressed on the issue, he said: “There were some talks but there hasn’t been for a while. Like I said, I’m focusing on my job and we’ll see what happens in the future.

“But I’m not concerned about that, just concerned about performing and doing well for my club.”

Fonte was also keen to quash some rumours that suggested he struggled to refocus on club duties after winning Euro 2016 with Portugal.

“No, never,” he said when asked if he had struggled to focus after an incredible summer. “You read stuff in the press and you believe it if you want. Listen, I am focused on my job and performing on the pitch – it’s as simple as that. As for the rest, there’s nothing else to say.”

The central defender did however accept that he may have needed more rest time during the summer.

“It was difficult because, I had no rest,” he said. “I only had two/three weeks holiday, so it was difficult to come to the team but now I’m feeling better and better and I just want to have a great season again.”

The skipper is now on his fifth manager of his St Mary’s career and believes that there is still a lot of room for improvement under the latest, Claude Puel, even after four straight wins.

Setting standards high, Fonte said: “I still think we have a lot to improve on.

“We can certainly improve by not putting ourselves in difficult situations.

“We need to kill the game earlier, manage the game better and don’t give opportunities to opponents, so still things to improve massively.”

Fonte has worked under Alan Pardew, Nigel Adkins, Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman and now Puel at Saints.

“There’s a different mentality, a different philosophy but a lot of quality and we’re just trying to adapt as quick as possible,” he said about Puel’s management.

Fonte wasn’t ever concerned about the transition to another boss, even after a slow start to the season.

“No, like anything it takes to get to know him (Puel) so and to adapt to his philosophy, so it’s going to take a little bit more but we’re giving our best,” he said.

After four straight victories in all competitions, Saints are aiming to build further on their momentum when they travel to Israel to face Hapoel Beer Sheva in the Europa League on Thursday and then to Premier League champions Leicester City on Sunday.

“We want to keep the momentum going that’s the main thing,” said Fonte. “There’s a lot of things to improve and we are going to keep this going for as long as we can.”

Champions League and Europa League impact on Premier League teams analysed

Show/hide article…

The Champions League has a negative impact on English clubs in their subsequent Premier League fixtures, a Sky Sports study in association with HPE has found.

Arsenal, Leicester, Manchester City and Tottenham were all victorious in their domestic fixtures after the first round of Champions League games, but recent history suggests that is unlikely to hold true for the rest of the season, with Premier League teams competing in Europe’s elite club competition often suffering a knock-on effect from their midweek exertions.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have taken part in the last five Champions League competitions and over that period average a worse points-per-game return in Premier League fixtures taking place after Champions League rounds.

City have suffered more than most, with their points-per-game haul in the Premier League dropping from 2.18 when they haven’t played in the Champions League earlier in the week, to 1.76 when they have. That’s a 19 per cent decrease.

Interestingly, City’s neighbours Manchester United have proved to be the exception to the rule. Over the past five years, in which United have participated four times in the Champions League, the Old Trafford side actually have a better record in Premier League matches played after those European games.

United have taken an average of 2.09 points per game in the Premier League following Champions League action but that figure drops to 2.01 points per game when they haven’t.

However, while their five-year average points return demonstrates a drop-off after Champions League action, City, Arsenal and Chelsea have each had individual seasons where they’ve picked up more points per game after European action.

In 2012/13, City won 1.8 points per game after Champions League fixtures, compared to 1.16 at other times. Arsenal (in 2013/14 and 2014/15) and Chelsea (2011/12 and 2013/14) have experienced similar trends.

In 2014/15, Liverpool had a better record after not playing in the Champions League. Under Brendan Rodgers, the Reds took 1.7 points per game when they hadn’t previously played in the Champions League compared with 1.17 when they had.

While there is a clear overriding trend among Premier League clubs in the Champions League over the last five years, the impact of the Europa League is more mixed.

In eight of the 12 Europa League campaigns by Premier League clubs since 2011/12, those teams have averaged more points after their European fixtures than in other league games.

In fact, during the 2011/12 season Tottenham, Stoke and Fulham averaged considerably more points in Premier League games after Europa League fixtures.

That season, Tottenham averaged 2.25 points per game after their Europa League ties, compared with 1.7 points per game in other Premier League matches. Stoke (1.78 points per game compared to one point per game) and Fulham (two points per game and 1.2 points per game) also responded well to Europa League competition.

However, the overall record of Tottenham and Liverpool - who have played a high number of Europa League games over the past five years - shows they have taken fewer points from Premier League games which take place following a Europa League tie since 2011/12.

Europa League play-offs played before the start of the season are not included, nor are European fixtures played before cup games or, in the case of Wigan in 2013/14 and Birmingham in 2011/12, Championship games.
