Martin Tyler’s stats: Do Arsenal get the most penalties?

Show/hide article…

Who has scored a debut double? Who has profited most from penalties? Martin Tyler knows…

How to send your questions to Martin:

On Friday night I was at Stamford Bridge to witness Liverpool’s fifth win in their last nine visits. In the last nine meetings home and away, there has only been one home win (Chelsea won 2-1 in December 2013).

David Luiz’s previous debut for Chelsea was a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool in 2011- so it was déjà vu; a phrase he’ll surely be familiar with having lived in Paris for a few years.

There were a number of personal milestones on the night; Willian made his 100th Chelsea Premier League appearance and Cesc Fabregas made his 100th Chelsea appearance.

Victor Moses made his 50th Premier League appearance - it has taken him four years to do so - and Adam Lallana played in his 300th league game. Dejan Lovren scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool in his 54th PL game.

The final score evened out their Premier League head-to-head record. In 49 meetings of Chelsea and Liverpool they have now won 19 each.

Have any other teams had less than 30% possession and scored four goals in a Premier League game, as West Brom did on Saturday? Kevin

MARTIN SAYS: West Brom had just 29 per cent of the ball in their 4-2 victory over West Ham, showing that possession isn’t always everything. They achieved something very unusual in football as they became just the second Premier League team since the 2003/04 season to score four goals despite having less than 30 per cent possession.

Opta’s possession stats only go back to 2003/04, but in that period Aston Villa are the other team to have achieved the feat when they drew 4-4 with Chelsea in a sensational game on Boxing Day in 2007. Martin O’Neill’s team enjoyed just 25.8 per cent of the ball but managed to get a result against the eventual league runners-up with Gareth Barry scoring a dramatic penalty in injury time to level up the match.

Islam Slimani scored a brace on his Premier League debut for Leicester - who else has scored two goals on their first PL appearance? Chris

MARTIN SAYS: The Algerian international produced a perfect Premier League introduction by scoring twice either side of half-time in Leicester City’s 3-0 win over Burnley.

He is the 26th name on a pretty illustrious list of players in the Premier League to have notched a double on his debut. Alan Shearer, Robbie Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Sergio Aguero all fired a brace on their first appearance in the Premier League.

Leicester fans will be hoping their new hero can continue to shine for the Premier League champions, but scoring twice on your debut doesn’t always guarantee you’ll be hailed as a success in the long run.

For example, Regi Blinker burst onto the scene for Sheffield Wednesday, scoring a brace in a 3-2 defeat away at Aston Villa but failed to build on that. He left the club to join Celtic a year later having scored just one more goal in 41 appearances.

Only one man has netted a hat-trick on his Premier League debut - that man is Fabrizio Ravanelli, who made a huge impact on his Middlesbrough debut in 1996 against Liverpool.

*Had all played in English top flight before, but scored braces on Premier League debut.

Please settle a bet. Barry has 600 apps, but have any current PL players won more PL matches than he has? Leon

Martin says: Yes - three players have.

John Terry (306), Wayne Rooney (265) and Michael Carrick (254) have surpassed Barry’s healthy number of 249 matches won in the Premier League, although Everton manager Ronald Koeman seems to think Barry has two more years left in him, so Rooney and Carrick better watch out!

Barry may find it tougher to catch the all-time most winning Premier League player though. Ryan Giggs is away and gone at the top of that list with 407 victories during his 24-year spell with Manchester United. He is followed by Frank Lampard (349), Paul Scholes (321), Terry and Rio Ferdinand (291).

What’s the record for most headed goals by one player in an entire Premier League season? How close is Michail Antonio to breaking that record? Alan H

Martin says: Michail Antonio has certainly used his head to good effect this season. All five of his Premier League goals for West Ham have come via that method, which means he’s scored more headed goals on his own than any Premier League side has this season.

It was his ninth headed goal since arriving in the Premier League 12 months ago, more than any other player in that period.

If he continues at this frightening strike-rate in this campaign then Duncan Ferguson’s record of nine headed goals during the 1997/98 season for Everton could be under threat. Dwight Yorke twice got close to matching Ferguson’s record, first in the 1995/96 season and then in 1999/00 - on both occasions he scored eight headed goals.

Roque Santa Cruz for Blackburn (2007/08) and Dion Dublin (1995/96) also scored showed their aerial prowess with eight goals in one season.

Has any team been awarded more penalties than Arsenal in 2016? Bobby

MARTIN SAYS: Arsenal won their fourth Premier League penalty of the season in their 4-1 win over Hull City on Saturday, meaning they’ve won more penalties than any other side this season (and they got another against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night). However, Arsenal fans will argue they have been due a few decisions go their way inside the penalty area as they had fail to win a penalty in 2016 before the start of this season.

Technically, Leicester City have benefited most from referees in terms of penalties being won with eight, although they failed to score with four of those. This means that Man City, who have been awarded seven but scored six of them, lead the way in terms of goals scored from the spot in 2016.

There are three teams that haven’t been awarded a Premier League penalty in this period, but two of those, Middlesbrough and Burnley, have only played five games each after promotion from the Sky Bet Championship. Aston Villa are the other team not to be awarded a spot-kick, but considering they only scored 10 goals in 2016, it’s not really a surprising stat.

Palace captain Dann suffers hamstring injury on 100th appearance

Show/hide article…

Alan Pardew has been handed yet another injury concern to deal with after Crystal Palace captain Scott Dann was forced off the pitch with a hamstring issue in the club’s EFL Cup third-round tie at Southampton.

Dann was one of three players alongside Wilfried Zaha and Joel Ward to retain his place in the Palace starting XI for the trip to St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday, with the Eagles captain making his 100th appearance for the club in the process.

But, after just 17 minutes of action, Dann pulled up on the pitch clutching his hamstring and was subsequently replaced by Martin Kelly a minute later.

Palace, however, appeared optimistic that the defender’s injury is not serious after they tweeted: “He pulled up holding his hamstring after a Southampton attack. Walked off the pitch unaided though, so hopefully not serious!”.

Despite the message on social media, the injury will still be a source of concern for Pardew, who is already without the services of James Tomkins (knee), Loic Remy (thigh) and Pape Souare (broken leg).
