Should overhead goals from Diego Costa and Laurent Koscielny have stood?

Show/hide article…

Should overhead goals from Diego Costa and Laurent Koscielny have stood?

Diego Costa, Laurent Koscielny and Rudy Gestede all caught the eye this weekend, as they scored from spectacular overhead kicks.

But should those goals have been disallowed?

On the opening day of last season, Norwich striker Cameron Jerome struck in similar circumstances against Crystal Palace and his effort was chalked off for dangerous play.

On that day, referee Simon Hooper disallowed the goal because Jerome’s foot was close to the head of defender Joel Ward.

Swansea’s Kyle Naughton might argue that Costa’s boot was dangerously high to his face. Southampton’s Jordy Clasie certainly felt some of Koscielny’s boot. Eric Lichaj was visibly hurt after being caught in the face by Gestede.

So what exactly is the rule?

This issue is covered by Law 12 where playing in a dangerous manner is defined as “any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player themself) and includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury”.

However, the law specifically states: “A scissors or bicycle kick is permissible provided that it is not dangerous to an opponent.”

So should this weekend’s incidents - whereby players were flinging their feet six foot in the air near the faces of opponents - be deemed dangerous? Not according to former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher.

He insists the referees were right to award goals to Costa and Koscielny this weekend - and Jerome’s should have stood last season.

Discussing Costa’s goal on Sky Sports News HQ, he said: "I think it’s very, very difficult to award a free-kick against the forward because it was so skilful.

"Eighteen months ago we watched Cameron Jerome score a similar goal and there was outrage that it was disallowed. Now a similar goal has been scored and people are asking why it was given.

“Last year we wanted it corrected. Everybody felt the forward should have been allowed to score that goal because it was so skilful and Costa did the same yesterday.”

Sky Sports pundit Niall Quinn agrees, arguing that players do not always expect free-kicks when opponents score with overhead kicks.

He said: "It was hanging up in the air and the boot was high, but Kyle Naughton’s head wasn’t up against the boot when it made contact. It was at the end of the movement.

“Had his head been six or eight inches nearer to the ball at the time of contact I think you’d have had a loud appeal - but none of the Swansea players complained.”

Gallagher was similarly adamant that Southampton could have no complaints over Koscielny’s effort: “The defender is nowhere near him. The defender isn’t close enough to the boot for it to be dangerous. It’s the right decision.”

Sky Sports pundit Alan McInally perhaps summed up the prevailing mood when he argued that, no matter what the rules state, football fans will always want to see goals from overhead kicks.

“Maybe by the law of the game it should be disallowed if the feet are so high,” he said. "But you don’t want to take that out of the game.

“If the opportunity is there as a striker, you think ‘I’m overhead kicking this in.’”

And perhaps the final word should go to Swansea boss to Francesco Guidolin, who was given the opportunity to complain about Costa’s equaliser in his post-match interview on Sky Sports.

“No,” he laughed when asked if it should have been disallowed. “It was a very, very good goal.”

Ref Watch: Gary Cahill fouled by Leroy Fer, says Dermot Gallagher

Show/hide article…

Ref Watch is back to debate another selection of controversial decisions from some of the weekend’s Premier League matches.

Former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher has been in the Sky Sports News HQ studio to analyse a number of contentious calls from weekend.

From debatable goals and penalty decisions, to red cards, overzealous goal celebrations and managerial reactions, we have it all covered in this week’s edition.

INCIDENT: Gary Cahill is tackled from behind by Leroy Fer, who then goes through to score.

SCENARIO: Chelsea’s central defender loses the ball to the Dutchman in the build-up to Swansea’s second goal, with referee Andre Marriner allowing play to continue.

DERMOT SAYS: The referee has gone to what is a natural position, expecting the ball to be cleared up field. It is played across the park, Cahill has dwelt on the ball and he thinks Leroy Fer has poked the ball between his legs from where he is. But he has not and he [Marriner] has completely misread it, so it is a foul.

INCIDENT: Thibaut Courtois fouls Gylfi Sigurdsson in the area with a lunging tackle.

SCENARIO: Chelsea’s goalkeeper brings the Iceland midfielder down with a rash tackle, with Marriner pointing to the spot, but the referee opted against sending Courtois off.

DERMOT SAYS: Definitely a penalty, and I believe the assistant has triggered that as he is the one looking right across the line. I do not even think that would have been a red card last season.

SCENARIO: The Southampton central defender pulls down the France forward, with referee Bobby Madley awarding a penalty.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: The incident should never have got this far.

DERMOT SAYS: I think this should never have got that far - I can understand from the ref’s point of view why he thought it was a shirt pull, but for me the key issue is at the start of the move.

This player is obviously injured - he is a defender and a defender would not stop on the opposition six-yard line, unless he was seriously injured and the evidence afterwards showed he had a facial injury. Secondly, he has directly affected the goalkeeper, who you can see was concerned about him, and when the ball came in, he was in the goalkeeper’s eye line, so you could stop that for any number of reasons.

The debate about whether Fonte or Giroud created the foul then goes away, so the key issue there is understanding not to put yourself in that position.

INCIDENT: Mark Hughes is sent off for verbally abusing the fourth official.

SCENARIO: The Stoke boss is dismissed by referee Anthony Taylor after disagreeing with a number of the official’s decisions at the Britannia Stadium.

DERMOT SAYS: His reaction is not acceptable under the guidelines and in fairness to him he came out post match and I thought his interview was fantastic. Under the current climate, if a manager reacts like that, it was so obvious to everybody that the fourth official had no alternative but to call the referee over and the referee remove him.

INCIDENT: Hildeberto Pereira was given a second yellow card after celebrating with his own fans following his side’s late equaliser.

SCENARIO: Having earned his first caution just moments before, Pereira is given his marching orders after jumping into the away section at Villa Park after Henri Lansbury’s late equaliser.

DERMOT SAYS: He is in a terrible position as he has to do it and the unfortunate thing is that had he not already had a yellow card, then we would not be standing here talking about this. But the fact that he has had a yellow card seven minutes earlier and the impact of having a red card, and the poor old ref is really the victim in this as it is a mandatory yellow card.

SCENARIO: The Rangers defender gets a red card on his debut for the club after receiving two yellow cards in the space of 12 minutes. The first was for a tackle on Scott Sinclair, before the former Arsenal man handled ball in the middle of the pitch.

DERMOT SAYS: I think that if you were in a highly charged local derby and you had to send a player off, this is heaven sent as nobody can argue - he is already on a yellow card and it is so obvious and blatant that nobody, not even the staunchest Rangers fan, would say the referee could not do anything else.

Southampton youngster hits form

Show/hide article…

SAINTS youngster Sam Gallagher looks to have put the dark days behind him after finding form on loan at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

The striker, who turns 21 on Thursday, has found the net in two of his last five appearances with Rovers, putting behind him a torrid loan spell at MK Dons last term and long-term injury before that.

Gallagher failed to score in 15 matches for Dons last season and was eventually recalled by Saints in January after being limited to game time from the bench.

He was initially sent of loan to StadiumMK to get first team experience after a return from a serious knee injury.

The 20-year-old was touted for big things after breaking in to the Saints team under Mauricio Pochettino, making 20 appearances in all competitions and scoring twice.

However, things didn’t go to plan and Gallagher had to battle back from the serious injury he suffered in pre-season 2014, eventually making his comeback in February 2015.

Now he’s finding his feet again and, after scoring in the 2-2 draw with Burton, Gallagher netted to equalise in the 1-1 draw at Loftus Road against QPR on Saturday.

Gallagher wrote on social media: “Another great effort from all the boys today! Not the 3 points we wanted but more performances like this and they will come! All the travelling fans were superb!”
