This and the pictures that follow this one, are the old Weston Lane shops. This picture is at the junction of Weston Lane and Wallace Road. I haven’t been over there for nearly 10 years but Google Earth shows they’ve been replaced with a new development.
As a cartographer I’m always relieved to see it bears a strong resemblance to the image on the map…despite being upside down.
I have been contacted by the Daily Echo today, who want to do a piece on this thread! My interest in it why I do it. I am currently in talks with them and their management over gaining access to their archives,
i am not sure if there is a agenda here or if they are just being helpful. Surely they must want something from this.
Nice to have the contact. The worrying thing is they found out who I was from comms with them in the early 2000’s as Sfcsim on the Ugly Inside!
Would be great to gain access to their volt though!
Theres been a murder, early to mid 90’s in one of the parade of shops, that I used to use a lot, for individual cigs in the late 80’s early 90’s on Onslow Road.
Are there any issues with copyright here, Sfcsim?
Funny enough I bought this up with them. As most are from books and photos that I own and from other shared forums, there are not any copyright issues. I have not taken any of the pictures from protected sites. These normally have a print across them, like ‘Getty Images’. Or on some websites it says or they do not allow you to copy and paste.
Seems all fine, I am sure someone will be in contact if there is an issue, that I have missed, then I will delete where required.
Thanks for that, Sfcsim. I’ve wondered where we stand with some of the stuff we put up on here.
Back in the 80s when I worked for a while as a technical author it was a requirement to seek permission from the originator whenever I reproduced any of their documentation in my handbooks.
It is a very touchy and delicate area. I do look at the copyrights, but I suppose I am not making any personal gain from them. If something does come up then, they would ask for me to remove the imagine/s. The Echo I know I have used some of their photos already… that policeman is the latest of about 30/40 I have used. They were more than happy.
The internet age has pretty much made it an open book, but as mentioned as long as I am not making money from any of the images. If I did their would be problems.
So if Pap allows it, then this forum could be in the Echo, but I would want Pap in on it as he has the vision for this forum.
Yeah, I’m sure you’re right, Sfcsim.
It’s great that people like The Echo have got to hear about it.
All credit to you for having the vision to start it, and also the perserverence to keep it going: it’s no small amount of work to upload all these images.
Anyway, it’s much appreciated, and it’s good to see you getting some well-deserved recognition for it.
I think people only really get miffed when you make money from their copyright or prevent them from making money with it, neither of which really applies here. Sotonians is not a business, and while you could argue that this thread could bring us a lot of “customers”, all we get out of it is the benefit of their posting wisdom.
My thoughts on copyright and specifically, plagiarism, were formed early on. Had a very intelligent mate who always had things to say, but as my own cultural horizons expanded, it was clear he was just passing off the work of others as his own. I lost a lot of respect for it and rarely rip off someone’s work, even in conversation.
That’s why most stuff not created by me but posted by me includes a link back to the creator, if at all possible. I think if we can make an effort to do that, we’ll be in a stronger position. Without it, I’d be wary about marketing it in any way that was seen as commercial.
I would like to point out, that most of these photos are from books and mags, paper clippings and shared sites. Very few are my own photos, but there are a fair amount that were my late dad’s and where I lay the blame of my passion. I am really just uploading for my own and others pleasure.
Love doing this.
You are right, it always comes down to money and that is when the problems start. Lets just keep it fun!
I am not aware of a lot of the sources!
Don’t forget to plug the hell out of this site!
If this thread is about to become famous can I just draw everyone’s attention to a couple of lines that are soon to be in stock:
Well I would want Pap to talk about the site. I can talk about the thread. I am more interested in gaining access to their volt, as this will benefit this site and that is what it is all about.
Right lets get back on track.
