Saturn, I think you’ll find. I’ve seen the original in the Prado, many years ago.

Indeed… not sure what happened there apart from auto correct… I will put it right
Nowt wrong with a preference LITSL. we all have them.
IIRC did they not find an undiscovered Dadd on antiques Roadshow a decade or so ago?
Tate Britain again. William Hogarth is best known for his social commentry but I could stand in front of this masterpiece for hours.
No reproduction can come close it is a wonderous piece of humanity…I find it very moving.
Top Art LITSL.!
You hit upon something not mentioned before in the thread - the diference it makes when seeing these things with your own eyes.
I remember seeing several Van Goghs at the Musee D’orsay sevral years back - closest I had come before was an Athena poster of one of his various sunflowers (Athena- showing my age).It turns the amazing it into something magnificent.
Indeed they did CR…
A Battery shelled - Wyndham Lewis
Imperial War Museum
Amazing work…
And something more varied…
I was lucky enough to be invited to a private viewing of some of Turner’s watercolour illustrations for poetry at The Clore Gallery back in the '90s. They showed us to a study room where the watercolours were lined up on desk easels…and locked us in. Needless to say, they were beautiful.
And one for Bearsy (well remembering Athena got me all nostalgic)
Loving this thread. Part of my Spanish and Italian degree was a bit on Spanish art (inc French Impressionists - think the tutor liked them and tagged it on). Love Goya’s stuff.
Never seen Derian’s work so thanks for introducing me to his work.

Derain and the fauve are amazing… As a student in 1991, was lucky enough to spend Easter vac in the US with some American Friends from Uni. Went to the Met. Museum and Modern Art and there was a Fauve exhibition. The pic above is of Westminster Bridge. No repro can do it justice. It’s a big canvas and each brush stroke is about the size of your thumb… its stunningly bright - left me spellbound.
This painting of Kelly Holmes (I’ve selected a photo that shows both the artist and the subject in front of the actual painting because it gives a good sense of scale) caught my eye at a recent visit to the National Portrait Gallery. My overriding thoughts were: first, I can’t believe it’s not a photograph; and, second, why didn’t he just take a photograph and save himself all that time and effort painting her. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to explore these thoughts with the artist.
Ahr Photorealism - not everyones cup of tea, for the reason you state - but you can’t argue with the skill. I know nothing about it so cant comment on why paint instead of photo…
…cant finish the thread without a bit of my favourite sculpture
Step forward (literally) Snr. Giacometti

Absolutely agree with that CR - it was truly amazing how he’d captured the detail on her face right down to the individual pore level.
The lead singer of my fave Southampton band is pretty artisitic.
I am in awe of how he does these sketches with biro.
I picked a football one for you guys.
Maybe that is the thing … because of the marvel at the detail - the ‘gasp’ when you realise the skill involved? Have seen a few of these, but nothing on that scale… can appreciate why you like it
