Itās a group that will change over time that will have the long-term interests of the site and its members in mind.
There are 4 people that make the decisions about Sotonians now - Me, pap, Goat and RaleighBoy - the Soviet will help to ensure that we do the right thing for the future of the site. But itās a position of influence and not direct ādirectionalā power.
pap has some really grand plans for the future of Sotonians and more broadly discussion amongst regional groups. He wants the Soviet to help define some of those things too.
It could be exciting. It could be a circle jerk. I suspect that as with most things in life the Soviet members will get out what they put in.
Iād ask you to consider one thing. Compare your experience here with your experience on TSW.
For example, Iām giving you full responses to your questions about matters that I could say āFuck yourself you oikā. Thatās what The Man does/did on TSW. If anything got too close to interfering with his monopolistic running of the site. And fair play to him. Itās āworkedā for him.
What youāre getting here, from the short bloke that boasts about his fighting record is a desire to gift 75% of the site to other people and then open up the decision-making process to another 4 members of the Soviet.

Its why we can never meet as it would cause too much pain as we wrench apart all the relationships in our lives ā¦ But I return at least once more to offer the benefit of my wisdom, no matter how much pain it causes us bothā¦
You see, I think, and maybe I am wrong, but I think this forum attracts a pretty broard mix of folks. From the self opinionated loud mouth bastards like me (and Pap whatever he may think), to the gentle chilled folk who are obviously old hippies doing too much weed, to the complete hat stands and a Bear. The way I see it, it means there will always be times when there is confrontation - I would say donāt be frightened of itā¦ Let those engaged in it fight it out. Itās part of life. I appreciate, this causes an āatmosphereā on some threads which go against the culture some are here for, but surely the culture of a place is ultimately dictated by those that use itā¦ Trying to direct it is only possible if itās a closed and selective membership? Whatever some may think, I donāt deliberately stat out to be argumentative. But I do believe in being passionate about my beliefs and opinionsā¦ that causes a bit of heat which means a greater sensitivity towards wind ups of deliberate bombsā¦ Especially when they cross over into the personal and the response isā¦well you knowā¦ Baiting at these times is never going to end up being prettyā¦ ā¦But
The way I see it, Pap is right about One thing, if you really do know someone, eg have met them several times, then these things happen less frequently or are more easily dissolved. Itās why we tend to have the most passionately fuelled rows with those we care and love the most ā¦ Yet they also remain the most easily forgivenā¦ Itās natural. When you know someone, itās easier to detect what is said in heat vs a true reflection of their characterā¦ But it is therefore just a bit more important not to jump to conclusions about folksā¦
I can understand if the desire for the site is to avoid all unpleasantness, but with that comes a danger of uniformity and sterilityā¦ Too many rules written or otherwise determining discussionā¦ And letās not forget what some class as argument, others merely think of heated debateā¦ We have different scales of sensitivity towards what we think is merely a heated exchange of views v full on barneyā¦ If it goes that way, itās not for me. I would wish the site all the best but I want challenging topics, I want controversy, and I want passionate debate and argumentā¦ To me it shows I am engaging with people who are happy to be themselves, not a virtual version of themselves on a massive wind up simply one they have chosenā¦ Whether I agree with them or not, I respect anyone who has the balls to present themselves as they areā¦ Not as they wish to be seenā¦

I have some of great laughs at some of the very clever humour as well as the virtual slapstick, but As someone who wear s their heart on their sleeve and enjoys (ironically de-stressing) by letting off virtual steam, those rows are good for exercising a few demonsā¦ I donāt want to fuck off those out for a Sunday stroll in the sunshine, but itās not as if every thread is the same ā¦ Surely the best forum have something for everyone?
