Saints v Newcastle - match thread

I’m hoping they continue to look chaotic, some seasons are beyond saving when a manager arrives that late.

Keep your negativity to yourself. This game is a certain home win and a commanding victory. 3-1, 4-0 or 6-0 are the numbers that are coming up in me bones. Either way, it’s a tonking. It’s such a certainty that I shan’t even watch it. I’m going to cut the grass.

Well, after 3 nights on the lash that have been paid for by different mates being in town, I simply can’t be assed to park my arse on the bed and watch this at home.

Luckily no Eric this week, he’s crashing planes again so pretty sure our good luck combo is when only one of us is at barasti with the massive.

It’s going to be OK guys, I have my lucky red and white matching boxer shorts and sock combo on today. To make even more special for you guys, at this moment in time that is all I have on!

1-0 long toe pokes it in

Shocking defending from Newcastle.

Got to make this dominance count, or we ‘could’ pay for it later. We are so in control of this at the moment. We look leagues apart.

In barcelona airport. I drank Sleaford Mods’ rider last night. They are nice lads. I will post a gig report when i feel less hungover.

Coys!!!

Newcastle pretty dire.

3-0 Wanyama

We’re winning this at a canter, first real action for Forster at around the 55 minute mark…

Commentators curse!!

Goal for the Barcodes out of nowhere! to be honest someone should have a put a foot in and stopped Townsend instead of letting him run across the box and shoot.

Walking back from the game. Newcastle had three decent shots. One of them happened to be a goal, which was admittedly decent. Even then, there was no real tension at St Mary’s, and frankly, no belief from Newcastle’s players or fans.

Loved the win, but little to learn from here. The Toon are doomed.

Yup, how I saw it too. We barely got out of first gear and Newcastle were dire. Good goal from Townsend but it only came about because nobody could be bothered to close him down. They were relegated weeks ago imo, shocking season from them. At least it gives them an opportunity to rebuild in the Championship, something they did quite well last time but then screwed up massively with their transfer policy in recent years.

Had a chat with one of them after the game. Started the conversation with “unlucky”. Wasn’t true for the game, but it is true generally. They are unlucky. The whole situation with Ashley is something that few fans would suffer. Fair play to them for dealing with their bad luck with such humour and grace.

One thing I would say for Newcastle is that they kept on going and didn’t just give up. After we scored so early I really though we might go on and post a silly score, but they stuck to it. Admittedly we didn’t exactly ove-extend ourselves, but even so there did seem to be some element of spirit and fight about the Toon.

Won’t be enough to save them though - they need to win some games and hope that the two teams above them fuck things up big time to survive. I could maybe see part of that combination happening, but not all of it.

As pap rightly said, there wasn’t really anything for us to learn from this, other than not to let Andros Townsend cut in from the right round the edge of the area, and especiallly not to give hiim lots of time and room to line up a shot. Long, Pellé and Wanyama all took their goals very nicely I thought. We could have had a lot more.

Job done :lou_sunglasses:. Had Villa, Newcastle and Sundreland for the drop some months back, wish I had put a few quid on it at the time.

Finally home, and with another great win and evening’s celebration festivities under the belt. :lou_lol:

This was a really very curious game of football.

I felt like I was watching a strange paradox unfolding before me. From the fourth minute, when Shlong’s superb run and finish set us on our way – this was an obvious victory. So obvious it was – that the meme ‘obvious victory is obvious’ – was obviously written for it.

And yet, it wasn’t.

Chance after chance and half-chance came, and then went. All without conversion. And time kept ticking on by. But the victory was obvious. Obviously. But for all our control, all our possession, all the creativity, the ball continually contrived not to go in. And “Referee” (I use the term loosely) Bobby Madley contrived to join the illustrious list of PGMOL’s Elite - to not award us two more blatently obvious penalties. Obviously. Because we are Southampton, and we do not get penalties awarded to us. (See last six games or so for evidence).

Even so – we kept working and pressing and creating, overrunning them at times. We looked so superior, that it seemed we could almost score at any time. The only surprising thing – was that we didn’t. And Newcastle were still there, all the while still in the game. We could have had six by half tme, but we didn’t. Although, thanks to Pelle and his strong finish – we at least did have two.

Yet even when “The Mighty Kenyan” (yeah, you remember, that cunt I was talking about that we should get rid of :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:) buried the (yes, obvious) winner – and the game was sooo comfortable – and the victory sooo obvious, I still couldn’t shake that feeling that Newcastle were still in it, and we could end up paying for the string of lost opportunities.

Then something else really obvious occurred. Jordy Clasie (who I think is becoming a cracking little player, and will become even more so with time and a good pre-season behind him) – who’d closed down so tirelessly all game – decided to let Andros Townsend (he of ‘likes to cut inside and shoot with his left fame’) cut inside and shoot with his left untracked and unchallenged.

And obviously – he scored. And Newcastle were still in it. Even though the victory was all the while still so paradoxically (all together…) obvious. So… why couldn’t I settle, and just enjoy the game? Even though the outcome was so (wait for it…) inevitable ( :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:) – I still had this irrational unease that we’d somehow blow it.

I do not usually feel like this. I am always so confident (too much at times unfortunately for my own good) that we’ll keep leads. I don’t know why today felt like this; it was just a really strange feeling, and strange game. In which we were so dominant and so comfortable, that the victory was so (yeah, alright) – anyway – and yet at the same time, somehow, it wasn’t. We started to stand off more (which I really fucking hate) and let them come more into the game in the second half, conceding possession at times, and that annoys me when we’re so dominant and should really press even harder to finish them off.

But this post is now long (hey - it’s me, what can I say – I’m a professional rambler), so I’ll just add that Shane Long is a fucking brilliant football player!!! His goal was fantastic, and really set us up for the (obvious :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:) victory. His pace, his energy, his sheer tenacity and determination, the way he defends from the front. I’ve said it before - when Shlongy plays, it’s like having twelve men out there, he works so hard. He gets through the workload of two players. It was so noticable how much our performance and swagger dropped off the moment that Shane left the pitch. He is our talisman.

Pelle was excellent, like the player we first purchased, clearly coming back to his best with the game-time and match-fitness under his belt. Proper hold up play, some brilliant heading ability on show from him today, especially in turning them into quality passes. He looked classy at times today, creating chances, and a great well taken goal too. Just what you want from your Frontman leading the line.

I could write more, but you’re probably asleep already. (Night night, sleep well).

[TLDR]: Shlong is fucking brilliant. An excellent game from Pelle. Bobby Madley is a cuntasaurus.(That means he’s a reaaally massive cunt). And it was a strange game, where even though our inevitable victory was blatently obvious. Paradoxically – It wasn’t – and Newcastle were still somehow just about still in it. Which was unsettling, even though it was so obvious that we would win.

Confused? So was I.

Nite nite.
