As it stands…

As we were in 12th then, at least we’ll still be there at the end of the game week…

Arsenal could lose 18-0.

If the second choice strickers were ment to run their defences then it needs a rethink I think Oberfemi needs to be moved on after that performance. No aggression or threat

small bone looked ok

Should have been out of sight by half time. Thought that was going to be one of those games where we miss a fuckton of chances then concede in the last 5 minutes.
Fortunately, Villa were shit. They have 2 good players in Mings and Grealish. Targett played ok, but that’s it. They’ll probably lose all three of those players if they get relegated or not.
Djenepo much better for us today and another good game at right back for JWP. He was probably looking for a bit more defensive help from Armstrong.
Great ball from Adams for the late goal.
Happy days. One more win and a draw or two should do it.
Oh and the pre match drinkers are taking full credit for Long scoring
Nice bit of retro violence outside afterwards too. Don’t think Villa were happy.

Great performance, never a doubt in my mind until Armstrong scored.

Some very good play today.

JWP and HĆøjbjerg are becoming complete players. Bertrand was a bit sloppy overall, but has earned a pass for previous displays.

Djenepo is great value given a bit of room.
Then we get Adams and Obafemi coming on.
That’s a fucking scary future for opposition defences(add their ages up) and i haven’t even mentioned Smallbone(not a bad intro at all).
Only negative, we probably should of reduced our GD deficit by more.

Oh yeah, what a pass

That’s great by Adams at the end. You’ve got to love Djenepo as well. He’s going to be a big star that one.

I’ve watched the Adams bit about a dozen times.
Good strong punch from McCarthy, nice control from Adams, then fucks off the pressure like he’s playing against children, looks up(already being aware of the oppo goalie) and makes a precision pass.
Scary potential in our forward play

Edit: nice finish Armstrong(rather you than LongšŸ˜‰).

Can only agree with all of this, though I didn’t see the 80s-style post-match fracas.

Enjoyed that game, in spite of (or maybe because of?) the second-half tension. It shouldn’t have happened, but there’s something about that squeaky-bum feeling that can be quite invigorating. With the chances we had, and the chances we didn’t quite create, we should have been out of sight by half time. Fortunately, Villa are simply so shite that it didn’t matter today.

Some random(ish) thoughts:

Smallbone was fucking good. Twenty years old just a few days ago, and with nothing more than an FA Cup game against Huddersfield to his credit in the first team (at least as far as I know), he looked completely at ease. Good on the ball, made himself available to get the ball, won the ball, used the ball well, and played some lovely balls into the box. Bold move by Ralph to play him, and it came off. Nice to see Ian Wright giving him a boost on MotD too - well deserved.

Our pressing game deteriorated after the double substitution of Ings and Long for Adams and Obafemi. On the face of it, this shouldn’t happen; after all, two players who’d been on for 70 minutes or thereabouts had been replaced by two young, fresh players. And yet Villa’s defenders had more time on the ball following the change.

Why is this? To me, it seems to be down to experience - it’s all about knowing when to chase the ball and when not to. It’s easy to get the impression that Shane Long chases everything, but he doesn’t - neither does Danny Ings. Any player who tried to do that, no matter how fit he might be, would be knackered after 30 minutes. The trick is knowing when to press and chase, and when not to. That is where Long and Ings are so good; they put pressure on the defenders when it looks likely that they’ll get something from it, and hang back when they reckon that they won’t. They’re both very intelligent players, and this is a key element. From what I’ve seen of them, both Adams and Obafemi are intelligent players, so they’ll learn. Playing and training with Ings and Long will play a major part in that.

Tyrone Mings is a classy player. I’d love it if we could sign him, but I reckon there’ll be way bigger teams than us after his signature come July. Grealish is also a decent player (well, way better than just decent), but he’s running Dele Alli and Wilfred Zaha very close indeed in the being a total wanker stakes. He won’t be at Villa next season; where he is and who his manager is will be pivotal in determining whether he remains a gifted player who’s a twat or becomes the player that he could be.

Djenepo was good today. No idea what happened to him last Saturday, but today he looked more like the player that he can be. Yes, he’s inconsistent; yes, his judgement is often lacking. But he’s young; give him a couple of years and he can improve on both of those, along with his finishing.

I disagree, I think Grealish is not as good a he likes to think he is…

But for me to pick that out of the rest means I can’t argue with it…

Yes, I’d agree with that. He is, at Villa, a great example of a tiger shark in goldfish bowl. Put him in a fucking great pond with a few great white sharks about and we’ll see what happens.
