To be honest you probably need to look at how you are advertising your jobs - including the job description itself.

You can for example, refuse flexible working if you can objectively justify doing so.Provision of workers other benefits are there for you to dictate if done properly

The devil is in the detail.

Tbf I was pissed off after hiring someone a few years ago who announced she was pregnant a couple of months in the job. Couldn’t hire to replace, she was a bit embarrassed but is now one of our best support team workers.

My firm could give you some advice to structure policy and procedures - reasonable rates obviously.

Fair enough , but were you really as disapproving of the Tories?

I think there will be plenty of safeguards anyway and there are some simple solutions- for roles such a reception, why not offer it as part time to two folks so they can shift as needed… ?

In the end employers can be quite clever turning these things into positive advantages…

Reminds me of my former life as an insolvency practitioner. Got appointed to a manufacturer in Dorset, wanted to keep trading while searching for a buyer, but needed to cut costs as it was loss making.

Two receptionists were employed, we only needed one. They were paid the same and were friends, so I had the tricky conversation and offered the choice to them - does one of you prefer to leave, or maybe both go part time? The next day they both quit. Bollocks.

Bloody employees choosing their own futures eh

Probably not but I was critical of them from time to time

and so far i have only cherry picked the stuff that i dont like particularly

I believe the new legislation is going to make it harder for companies to turn these requests down. Before the employee would have to demonstrate why is would be possible, whereas I think the employers is going to some lenghths to justify why they said no

The devil will absolutely be in the detail of the legislation

Good theory

In my recent experience of dealing with returning mums and part time requests is that they all want Friday off.

Trying to find two employees who can dovetail their hours so that you have full time equivalent coverage is easier said than done. The first hire is relatively easy - the second not so much as you are significantly restricting your pool of potential candidates

I see the Tories are still keeping it classy

Interesting and laudable aims.

Am looking forward to the frothing at the mouth about the removal of the VAT exemption on independent school fees - given as already said on here schools have a lot of cash in the bank (Appreciate some don’t but whose fault is that planning wise?).

Even before Labour have had a chance to enact their VAT reforms on private schools, the beans counters have come up with a wheeze

If the schools have to pay VAT, they will be able to claim it back on purchases, including construction costs. Private schools are very good at upgrading facilities as they are loaded and often bequeathed a lot of money for specific use

VAT law allows you to go back 10 years to claim back VAT on capital expenditure - which will probably mean the govt will bring in less than they currently do for the first couple of years

Grandkids school will be fine then, they just opened their big new sports hall/swimming pool last summer

Likewise with pretty much any firm when it comes to the reimbursement of expenses - they always want a VAT receipt.

If they are registered as charities, they may not have paid VAT on any construction projects in the first place.

Interesting - is it like residential ie if you demolish and rebuild there is no VAT but there is if one wall is still standing

As did Winchester

Unfortunately the VAT rules are unnecessarily complex (strangely!). it will depend upon the type and use of the building. It’s certainly not a blanket, no VAT paid by charities at all. Usually there are elements of the building that can be zero rated and capital allowances are available for VAT reclaims after construction (always have been). We received conflicting VAT advice from HMRC for the same query (raised twice) on one project.

Conflicting guidance from HMRC? Surely not. That would mean they don’t understand their own rules!

He got a response, twice, the lucky bastard
