Saints’ sponsors help top flight fans save thousands of pounds

Show/hide article…

Away fans from all Premier League clubs are to see tickets capped at £20 for the first time over the coming weeks - thanks to Saints’ shirt sponsor.

Travelling fans will benefit thanks to a pioneering move by Virgin Media and the Football Supporters’ Federation.

The national supporters’ organisation launched the ‘Twenty’s Plenty’ campaign in January 2013, calling on clubs at all levels to recognise travelling supporters by capping ticket prices.

Premier League clubs have capped away tickets at £30 since the start of the season as part of a three-year agreement, but Virgin Media is now reimbursing the cost of tickets above £20 for a single away fixture at all top-tier clubs.

The majority of matches covered by the initiative, in partnership with the FSF, are being held between April 15 and 23, while Virgin Media, Saints’ shirt sponsor, already subsidises every visiting supporters’ ticket to St Mary’s to £20.

Kevin Miles, chief executive of the FSF, said: "The Football Supporters’ Federation has a long-standing rally cry - Twenty’s Plenty for Away Tickets.

"We’re delighted that Virgin Media has helped make that a reality at many upcoming top-flight games.

“Thanks to this Twenty’s Plenty deal, tens of thousands of top-flight fans could potentially save hundreds of thousands of pounds in the coming weeks. It’s a great idea.”

Brigitte Trafford of Virgin Media added: "We want to be part of a positive change for Premier League football fans across the country and are stepping up by subsidising away tickets to £20.

“Away fans are at the heart of the game and their tickets need to be affordable. Without them, the atmosphere in grounds is reduced and their teams don’t feel supported.”

Fans can claim their subsidy after their team’s match by visiting www.virginmedia.com/twentysplenty

Ex-Saints star desperate to prove Mourinho wrong

Show/hide article…

Luke Shaw has pledged to give everything to stay at Manchester United and take the club he loves back to the top,.

The former Saints starlet is vowing to “fight to the last” under Jose Mourinho.

This has been a chaotic few days in the 21-year-old’s career, having been publicly eviscerated by his manager over the weekend.

Scathing comments related to commitment and focus led Shaw and Mourinho to hold a meeting on Monday - an exchange that may not have cleared the air entirely but paved a way for a surprise return to the squad to face Everton the following day.

The left-back came on in the second half for just his third United appearance in four months - a promising comeback that culminated in his shot being handled and Zlatan Ibrahimovic pinching a late draw from the penalty spot.

“I have missed it so much, being on the pitch,” Shaw said. "I really do love football and I love to play on the pitch.

"I am loving it here at United, the fans are incredible and have been incredible the last couple of days for obviously what has been going on.

“But I am keeping my head up and I am going to fight to the last. I am not going to give up. I love this club and I will give everything to be here.”

Shaw spoke with passion, intensity and focus in the bowels of Old Trafford, unaware that elsewhere in the ground Mourinho was tempering praise with criticism over tactical naivety.

But given his defender’s respectful tone throughout the interview and after it, such talk is likely to fuel his resolve rather than dampen it.

“Sometimes I tend to keep it on the low,” Shaw said when put to him he was speaking more passionately about life at United than normal.

"But obviously with the stuff that has been going on it is hard for me to take because deep down that is not me as a person.

"Like Jose said, he wants to see me fighting - and I will fight to the last second because I want to be here for the club.

“I want to play for the manager and I want to help this team get back to the top.”

There is a fair way to go if United are to get back to the top of the English game, but Tuesday’s reprieve appears to offer the full-back hope of being involved in that process beyond the summer.

Shaw could have even capped that return with a dream goal - his first in professional football - was it not for Ashley Williams’ handball.

But such a memorable moment would not have lessened his determination to succeed long-term.

“I am working really hard at the moment,” said the player who cost United £27m when he signed from Saints after the 2014 World Cup. "Especially now more than ever.

"I am going through a phase where everything sort of is going against me, but I want this so badly, I want to prove everyone wrong.

"We were unlucky (against Everton). I think sometimes the luck is not in our favour and it is disappointing.

“We were all disappointed in the changing room, but we’re not going to give up, we’re a team of fighters and experienced players. We’ll build up to Sunday now.”

Victory at Sunderland would bolster top-four ambitions that Shaw believes United still have a “very good chance” of achieving, with such confidence also clear when he spoke about the Europa League.

That competition offers the chance for the England international to be involved in a first major final and repay the faith of United fans, whose support has been keenly felt since sustaining a horrific double leg break in September 2015.

“They have been so good to me and, like I said, especially the last sort of two days,” Shaw added. "That’s why I love them.

"It is easy for them to see those comments and turn on me, do you know what I mean?

"But the passion they have always shown to me is amazing and something I don’t and won’t forget for a long time because it means a lot to me.

“I don’t want to let them down and I’ll fight for each and every one of the fans as well.”

Allardyce furious with ‘diabolical’ decision that helped Saints win

Show/hide article…

Sam Allardyce hit out at a “diabolical” missed foul on Wilfried Zaha in the 3-1 defeat at Saints last night - before tipping Crystal Palace’s relegation battle to go right to the wire.

Palace boss Allardyce bemoaned the assistant referee refusing to flag Steven Davis’ heavy challenge on Zaha in the build-up to Saints’ first goal at St Mary’s.

Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse struck two goals in as many minutes to steal Saints a late victory, after Nathan Redmond and Christian Benteke had traded first-half goals.

Allardyce believes Palace face the toughest run-in of all the Premier League’s relegation battlers - and challenged his side to keep a higher points tally than matches played to stay on course for survival.

“It’s diabolical in terms of that decision on Wilfried Zaha,” said Allardyce.

"I can’t for the life of me find any reason why the assistant hasn’t seen Wilfried in control of the ball being completely bowled over by the opposition player from behind.

"It just baffles me why he’s kept his flag down, and how a professional at this level can get such a simple decision wrong.

"Some decisions are difficult, this wasn’t difficult, it was so easy, and it cost us being 1-0 up at half-time.

“I don’t want to get fined, but at the end of the day he deserves the criticism he gets for not making the right decision. But what can you do about it?”

Asked if he spoke to the officials about his grievance, Allardyce replied: "There’s no point. He’ll deny it was a foul.

"They get so superbly protected today, and perhaps rightly so because it is a hard job.

“I don’t know if it would have changed the game. And it’s our own fault we lost it after that.”

Having surrendered their four-match winning streak on the south coast, Palace must now travel to Arsenal on Monday night.

Allardyce believes his men could well need a result at the Emirates in order to keep their survival bid on track.

“Our target is that we stay on more points than games played,” said Allardyce.

"Which means if we can stay on more points than games played for the last eight games we’ll get more than 38 points and that will be enough.

"We’ve got to get a result now otherwise we’ll be 31 games, 31 points.

"We’ve got a game in hand, when that game comes round we’ll have to get some points.

"That’s why for me a point would have been like a win tonight.

"I think our relegation fight will go to the wire, yes.

"We’ve had a massive boost in the end by beating Chelsea, but everybody else is picking results up down there.

"You’re in control of your games, you’ve got to get the points you need, and you can’t go chasing looking at the results elsewhere and hoping they’ve lost because ultimately you’ll fail.

“I think we’ve got the hardest run of all the teams down there, that’s why a point would have been very precious here tonight.”

WATCH & VOTE: Premier League goals of the week - Jamie Vardy, Philippe Coutinho, Olivier Giroud

Show/hide article…

Jamie Vardy, Philippe Coutinho and Olivier Giroud feature in our compilation of Premier League goals of the week but which is your favourite?

Giroud curled a fine effort into the corner from 15 yards just nine minutes after coming on as a substitute in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over West Ham, while Coutinho scored Liverpool’s first in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, collecting Roberto Firmino’s pass in his stride and then keeping his balance to finish past Artur Boruc.

Marc Albrighton set up Vardy for a trademark finish as Leicester beat Sunderland 2-0 on Tuesday night - his seventh goal in nine games for club and country - and M’Baye Niang also features after putting Watford ahead in the 13th minute of their 2-0 win over West Brom with a brilliant strike from outside the box.

Christian Eriksen also makes the cut for his injury-time goal in Tottenham’s dramatic 3-1 victory over Swansea on Wednesday evening but who gets your vote? Watch the strikes in the video above then have your say…

Benteke strikes but jaded Palace can’t hold on at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s wing-play and energy were just too much to handle for a Crystal Palace side that looked jaded by their 2-1 win at Chelsea last Saturday. Sam Allardyce will be disappointed his side got to 80 minutes at 1-1 on Wednesday, before losing 3-1, but Saints deserved all three points.

Having highlighted Christian Benteke’s goalscoring troubles a few weeks ago, it was good to see the striker score his second goal in two games to give Palace the lead. The goals he scored for Belgium on international duty clearly helped re-establish his confidence.

Palace had tremendous difficulty handling Southampton’s quick, overlapping wingers and full-backs, so much so that passing the ball out to the wings was their primary objective whenever they had possession. Tactical changes couldn’t remedy it either.

6 – Having picked a core squad for much of Palace’s winning run, Allardyce is now being forced to look beyond that first XI in order to secure the points needed to survive. Palace fought valiantly but as Southampton increased the pressure on the defence, despite more defensive changes, it wasn’t surprising when they took the lead.

Player ratings: (1-10; 10=best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Wayne Hennessey, 8 – It looked like Hennessey would have another point-winning game. He made some superb saves, especially in the second half, but they weren’t enough as Southampton’s persistence paid off.

DF Jeffrey Schlupp, 5 – Allowed Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse to get the better of him throughout the match. Caught in possession a few times, too.

DF Mamadou Sakho, 7 – Made a number of key tackles during the game, but it wasn’t the greatest performance from a defender who has been stellar since he arrived.

DF Martin Kelly, 6 – Southampton had a clear tactic of passing the ball into areas behind the defensive line and it worked. Kelly did reasonably well against Shane Long but there were a few occasions where he needed Hennessey to bail him out.

DF Joel Ward, 5 – Like Schlupp, Ward had a really difficult game against Southampton’s wingers. Southampton’s second came from a poor clearance and then a flat-footed response to Redmond’s skill and pace.

MF Luka Milivojevic, 6 – Looked tired, and played that way too. Hit the post with a delightful free kick.

MF Yohan Cabaye, 5 – Struggled to deal with Dusan Tadic’s movement. Went off at half-time with a calf strain.

FW Wilfried Zaha, 6 – Didn’t get the ball as often as he should have, but when he did he struggled to deal with Southampton’s marking. Should have been given a free kick in the moments before Southampton equalised.

FW Christian Benteke, 7 – Scored a good goal and made himself a difficult opponent. Still could do with a better quality of service though.

FW Andros Townsend, 6 – Got the assist for Benteke’s goal and did a significant amount of defensive work, too.

FW Bakary Sako, 6 – Brought on for Cabaye with the aim of putting Palace on the front foot a bit more. It didn’t work.

DF Damien Delaney, 6 – Made what looked like a point-saving block late in the game, but it wasn’t enough.

MF Mathieu Flamini, N/R – Came on late in the game and didn’t have any influence.

Yoshida wants more after Palace heroics

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida struck the winning goal for Saints against Crystal Palace and then urged his team-mates to keep the goals flowing as they plot a Premier League ascent.

The Japanese international scored his first league goal of the season to give Saints the lead on 84 minutes, before James Ward-Prowse added a third moments later in the 3-1 win at St Mary’s.

“We have to be more clinical in front of goal,” he said. “But we got three goals and hopefully there’s more goals to come at West Brom on Saturday.

“We will also be targeting another clean sheet too.”

The victory lifted Saints to 9th in the top-flight and to seven points off Saturday’s opponents West Brom with two games in hand.

It was Saints’ first win at St Mary’s since January and Yoshida admitted that, after a frustrating period on home turf, his goal brought relief and delight in equal measure.

“Because last month we didn’t play at home and we were, including the supporters, missing the winning feeling,” he said.

“We can celebrate together now and hopefully against West Brom.”

He added: “The most important thing is we got three points because we have been waiting for this win for a long time – especially after not playing at St Mary’s for so long either.

“The fans expected a lot from us, so we could answer that today and we’re really happy.

“The most important thing now is to win against West Brom because we can catch up with them really quickly.

“The table is really close, so it’s important to keep winning.”

The central defender is eager to build momentum.

He said: “We have to keep winning because the table is really tight. If we lose twice, we could drop really quickly.

“If we win twice, we can look more above.”

After claiming the triumph, the 28-year-old was in a forgiving mood after referee Roger East waved away two big penalty shouts for Saints in the first-half.

With Claude Puel’s men trailing 1-0 after Christian Benteke’s opener, Jeff Schlupp appeared to handle in the box, before Shane Long was barged over by Luka Milivojevic.

“In my opinion we should have got two penalties, but we’ve won 3-1 so it’s okay,” said Yoshida.

“I don’t like to speak about the referee too much because sometimes we get lucky and sometimes unlucky because the referee is human as well.

“Sometimes they make mistakes and sometimes they work very well.”

ORIOL Romeu has been suspended for two games after picking up his tenth booking of the season in domestic competitions during last night’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

The defensive midfielder, who has been a key man in Saints colours this term, will now miss the trip to West Brom on Saturday and the home match against Manchester City on April 15.

The Spaniard will be available again for the visit to his former club Chelsea on April 25.

He picked up his tenth yellow of the season after a late challenge on Wilfried Zaha during Saints’ triumph at St Mary’s.

Southampton boss Claude Puel aiming for top-half finish

Show/hide article…

Southampton are targeting a top-half finish in the Premier League table after beating Crystal Palace 3-1 on Wednesday, manager Claude Puel said ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Southampton secured their first win in three games when they defeated Palace at St. Mary’s stadium and moved up to ninth in the table, seven points behind eighth-placed West Brom albeit with two games in hand.

‘Every game it is difficult to know the scenario of each game…But I think we stayed with a good performance and it is now important to stay in the top half of the table,’ Puel told British media.

'This was a very important game because other teams behind us came back, so it was important to take these points.

‘After we have to play against West Bromwich, and it is an objective to try and get a good result away against this team, who are a difficult team with confidence,’ he added.

Puel is hoping that defender Ryan Bertrand, who missed the Palace game due to a hamstring injury, will return for the game against West Brom. ‘He felt something with his hamstring and he cannot take the risk. I hope so, we’ll see,’ Puel said.

Southampton will be looking to win two league games in a row for only the third time this season when they travel to the Hawthorns, where they have not won since 2013.
