Southampton v Crystal Palace preview: Sam Allardyce facing defensive decisions

Show/hide article…

Sam Allardyce will have some tough defensive decisions to make as Crystal Palace travel to Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday.

The Eagles boss will be without three regulars in his back line, with Patrick Van Aanholt and James Tomkins certain omissions for the trip to St Mary’s, while Scott Dann could miss the rest of the season.

It means Allardyce will need another defensive reshuffle to maintain Crystal Palace’s run of four straight Premier League victories, including a stunning win against table toppers Chelsea on Saturday.

Southampton are just three points ahead of their weekend opponents although they have lost just one of their last 13 home league meetings with the Eagles, winning the last five.

It could help the Saints to get their form back on track at St Mary’s with just one win in their last five Premier League outings on home turf.

Loic Remy has returned to training with Crystal Palace and could be available on Wednesday although Fraizer Campbell (knock) and James McArthur (back spasms) are expected to remain out of action.

Elsewhere for the Eagles, Connor Wickham and Pape Souare remain long-term absentees.

Sofiane Boufal is doubtful for Southampton after he pulled a muscle in his leg during Monday’s training session and will be assessed ahead of the game.

Martin Caceres could make his debut for Claude Puel’s side after reaching full match fitness for the first time since joining the Saints in February although Manolo Gabbiadini remains sidelined with a groin injury.

After failing to win any of their first 12 Premier League games against Southampton, the Eagles have won two of their last three against them, though both wins have come at Selhurst Park.

Sam Allardyce has never lost a Premier League game at St Mary’s Stadium, though six of his eight visits there have ended level (W2).

Southampton haven’t lost both league games in a season against Crystal Palace since 1990-91, when the Eagles finished third in the old First Division.

Of teams Southampton have faced 10 or more times in the Premier League, their joint-highest win percentage is against Crystal Palace (60 per cent, level with Swansea).

Crystal Palace have won their last four Premier League games; they’ve only won five in a row in the competition on two other occasions (April 2014 and December 1992).

Sam Allardyce hasn’t won five consecutive matches in the Premier League as a manager since December 2006 while in charge of Bolton Wanderers.

Crystal Palace have won all four of their Premier League games in which Mamadou Sakho has played, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Wilfried Zaha has been directly involved in 13 Premier League goals this season (six goals, seven assists); three more than in his previous three top-flight campaigns combined (six goals, four assists).

I’m going to go Palace here. They’ve got some really, really tough fixtures coming up, and they need to win this. They have the hardest run-in, so they need to get a gap between them and the bottom three.

If they win this, I think they’ll be OK. Because then, Sam Allardyce can set his side up not to lose against the big teams.

You don’t want to go into those games against the bigger teams needing to win. He’s the best in the business at getting draws against those big teams.

Crystal Palace are the 19/5 outsiders with Sky Bet to follow up their shock win against Premier League leaders Chelsea with another three-point haul at Southampton on Wednesday night. Saints have been priced up as the odds-on favourites at 3/4 to secure the victory and the draw is available at 13/5.

Christian Benteke can be backed at 7/1 to follow up his winner against Chelsea with the first goal at St Mary’s. Sky Bet’s first goalscorer odds are led by Southampton forward Gabbiadini at 7/2, while his fellow Saints strikers Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez are on offer at 4/1.

Opposition View: Crystal Palace

Goals from Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke secured success at Stamford Bridge to make it four wins in succession.

“It’s a buoyant mood obviously. It’s a much better place of work now and the doom and gloom is lifting slightly,” Allardyce reflected.

“We’ve still a way to go to make sure we don’t waste the Chelsea result. We’ve achieved one of the shocks of the season, so that’s a massive three points.

“Now we’ve got to ensure we don’t waste it and go on to get the results to secure our Premier League status.”

The Eagles arrive at St Mary’s having conceded just one goal in their last four games.

And that’s a solidarity which Allardyce feels is allowing them express themselves in attacking sense as well.

He added: “I think if you remember when I first arrived one of the key elements was to stop the goals going in. Unfortunately for a long period, the team was failing to cope with that.

“We were continuing to leak what I would call soft goals, which left us in the position where we had to go into the transfer market to try and resolve that problem.

“If you look at the players that arrived, all of them have a defensive side to their game and that has helped secure the out of possession side and has allowed us to flourish in position.

“Every team if it doesn’t concede goals has a chance to win a game at any point whether you’re dominating or not.”

Allardyce calls for Zaha focus ahead of Saints trip

Show/hide article…

AHEAD of Crystal Palace’s trip to Saints tomorrow, Eagles boss Sam Allardyce has urged Wilfried Zaha to retain his focus after his fine form has led to speculation surrounding his future.

The winger, 24, has produced the best football of his career to inspire Palace’s recent resurgence as they battle against relegation.

Allardyce has already instructed Zaha to strive to reach the level at which Eden Hazard regularly plays, while Palace chairman Steve Parish has spoken of plans to offer him a new contract once their Premier League status is secured.

Zaha has long been a reported transfer target for Tottenham, and ahead of Wednesday evening’s fixture at St Mary’s his manager has reminded him of where his priorities should lie.

“Hopefully Wilf is not listening to all that the papers are saying, good or bad. And that it doesn’t distract him from the performances he is giving,” said Allardyce. "

"You can get distracted by good publicity as well as bad, and he has to consistently perform to the level he is at and that gives him a greater value, and Steve has chosen maybe to offer a new deal.

"Whether Wilf accepts that, maybe on the basis that he likes this club and what the club’s done for him, only time will tell. So come the end of the season, make sure we are in the Premier League and those talks can take place, but until then shut up about it.

"He’s maturing as a person and that maturity is producing consistent performances. I don’t want him to get distracted from the focus, which is getting better and keeping us in the Premier League.

"If there is any real interest, that interest will be portrayed to Steve. At the moment it’s all about creating speculation.

"You don’t want it to affect the player’s focus. I’ve seen it at some clubs when a player thinks they are moving and switches off.

“There’s a lot of talk about him: I just hope it doesn’t distract him.”

Wednesday’s trip to St Mary’s, for which central defenders James Tomkins and Scott Dann have been ruled out, follows Saturday’s unexpected and impressive 2-1 win at Chelsea.

Despite four successive victories Palace remain 16th and only four points above the bottom three, and Allardyce is concerned about the prospect of complacency, having regularly experienced his teams’ struggle immediately after big wins.

"My experience has been at Palace, Blackburn, Bolton, when they have pulled off a big one, it’s always hard to win the next one. And my challenge to the players is ‘Can you go out again and do it again?’, he said.

"When we have beaten one of the big three or four it’s always hard to get up for the game after. And because this game is in the week, and not the week after, it’s harder and I’m going to try to explain to the players (in training) the need for the same desire and commitment they showed on Saturday.

"But it’s a buoyant mood. It’s a much better place of work now. The doom and gloom is lifting slightly but we have still a way to go to make sure we don’t waste this result.

“We have achieved one of the shocks of this season and we have to make sure we don’t waste it.”

Southampton vs. Crystal Palace - Football Match Preview - April 5, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel will not put pressure on forwards Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long to score more goals in the absence of injured striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

Mid-table Saints host in-from Crystal Palace at home on Wednesday on the back of Saturday’s goalless home draw against Bournemouth - a match Italy forward Gabbiadini missed through an injury sustained before the international break.

Having arrived at St Mary’s on the final day of the January transfer window, the former Napoli frontman hit the ground running with five goals in his first four starts before picking up a groin injury in the early stages of the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on March 19.

With fellow striker Charlie Austin also sidelined, Rodriguez and Long were given the task of leading the line for Puel’s side last weekend against the Cherries.

The pair drew a blank, but Puel has stressed the importance of not piling pressure on his depleted front line, and challenged every member of his squad to chip in with goals.

“For a striker, it’s always important to score, but I don’t want to put them under pressure with an obligation to score,” Puel said.

"It’s important they can do good work for their team-mates.

"In different situations they can have different opportunities to score, but it’s not just important for strikers to score.

"I think we have improved since the beginning of the season. Many players can score in the team, sometimes for the first time, and I said it’s important all of the players in the team can score - not just the strikers. It’s important to continue this work.

“Of course, (Steven) Davis, (James) Ward-Prowse, (Nathan) Redmond, different players - defenders in set-pieces - can score. It’s important to create danger with many opportunities with different players.”

Midfielder Sofiane Boufal is doubtful for the clash after he pulled a leg muscle in training on Monday. The Moroccan will be assessed ahead of the midweek game at St Mary’s.

Defender Martin Caceres could make his debut for Puel’s side after reaching full match fitness for the first time since joining the Saints in February.

Meanwhile, Eagles boss Sam Allardyce has warned Wilfried Zaha of the need to retain his focus as his fine form attracts wider transfer speculation surrounding his future.

The winger, 24, has produced the best football of his career to inspire Palace’s recent resurgence as they battle against relegation.

Zaha has long been a reported transfer target for Tottenham, and ahead of Wednesday night’s clash his manager has reminded him of where his priorities should lie.

“Hopefully Wilf is not listening to all that the papers are saying, good or bad. And that it doesn’t distract him from the performances he is giving,” said Allardyce.

"You can get distracted by good publicity as well as bad, and he has to consistently perform to the level he is at and that gives him a greater value.

“Whether Wilf accepts that, maybe on the basis that he likes this club and what the club’s done for him, only time will tell. So come the end of the season, make sure we are in the Premier League and those talks can take place, but until then shut up about it.”

Palace will be without centre-backs Scott Dann, who has a medial knee ligament injury, and James Tomkins (calf) so Martin Kelly and Damien Delaney will come into contention to play alongside Mamadou Sakho.

Patrick van Aanholt is still sidelined with an ankle problem, while James McArthur remains a doubt, but Loic Remy is again available.

The Inside Track: Crystal Palace

Show/hide article…

What has the form been like recently?

It’s been a remarkable turnaround. They’re four games unbeaten now, and have conceded just one goal in that run, which was obviously away at Chelsea. It’s probably coincided with Mamadou Sakho starting those last four. He’s been immense and has been a real rock at the back for Palace.

Going forward, Wilfried Zaha is in the form of his life. Andros Townsend had a slow start, but is stepping up now and, of course, there’s former Saint Jason Puncheon. He’s got the captain’s armband and, being a local boy, it means a lot to him. The players respect him, he gees the players up before the game, and of course then there’s Christian Benteke, who’s fantastic in the air and holds the ball up. The confidence is oozing and they are using everyone to their full strengths.

Just how much of an effect has Sam Allardyce had?

When he came in it was all quite rushed. He didn’t have much time to plan transfers, he had to assess his squad. He probably didn’t know much about Crystal Palace and has had to learn a lot inside a few weeks. When he came in it wasn’t a fairytale start, but the signings they brought in have now gelled and we’re seeing the results of it. He’s brought in his style of play, which is a lot different under Alan Pardew, where it was all attack, attack, attack and wasn’t really too much about defending. But the Palace way we’ve been used to in the Premier League has been to defend and with the players they’ve got, like Wilfried Zaha, to hit teams on the break.

What is the style of play like at the moment?

Everyone works really hard for each other, everyone is defending as a unit, whereas before they weren’t, and there’s almost a never-say-die attitude. They’re just working as a team. They’re hard to beat. It’s a bit similar to what we saw when Tony Pulis was the manager as well – disciplined and hard to beat, and they’ve got the quality to hit teams on the counter attack with devastating effect.

Who will be Palace’s key men in this game?

WIlfried Zaha is on fire, and is showing why Manchester United bought him a few years ago. He’s adding goals to his game – his goals and assists combined is the highest in the Premier League, ahead of Dele Alli and Coutinho. He’s quick, he’s direct, he produces good deliveries, and he’s getting goals.

Christian Benteke will be fired up as well. He hadn’t scored for two months for Palace until Saturday, but he’ll be a big threat.

Palace have got some problems at the back. Scott Dann has suffered knee ligament damage, but Sakho has come in and been absolutely immense. I don’t know how they’re going to line up. If he plays Damien Delaney and Sakho together, they’re both left-sided centre-backs, so I’m not sure if he’ll go 3-5-2 or 4-4-2.

I should also mention Luka Milivojević, the big holding midfielder. He goes very quietly about his job, but he’s so, so effective.
