Saints held to a goalless draw

Show/hide article…

Dušan Tadić was denied by the outside of the post and Jay Rodriguez had his first-half strike ruled out for offside, as Saints were forced to make do with a share of the spoils against Eddie Howe’s side.

Tadić almost had Saints ahead early on in the encounter. Finding space on the edge of the area the Serbian shifted the ball out of his feet and fired at goal, but was unable to keep his strike down and it flew over Artur Boruc’s crossbar.

Tadić had another opportunity just moments later as Rodriguez leapt to head down for him on the right of the area, but this time he dragged his effort wide of Borcuc’s far post.

0n 15 minutes Saints appeared to have gained the breakthrough their opening performance had deserved. Rodriguez latched onto a Nathan Redmond cross and was first denied by the onrushing Boruc but then tapped the rebound home, only to then see the linesman signalling for offside.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic, however, and the visitors didn’t take long to fashion their first real chance of the match. Ryan Fraser’s in-swinging corner from the left was punched clear by Fraser Forster, but only as far as Dan Gosling who swung a leg at it, but struck well over the bar.

Fraser’s corners were causing problems for the Saints defence and almost forced a breakthrough on 33 minutes. This time from the opposite side Andrew Surman studded the Scotsman’s low cross past the out-rushing Forster, but Steven Davis was on hand to sweep the ball off the line.

At the other end, Cédric surged down the right flank and played inside to Redmond who in turn teed up Tadić inside the penalty area, but the Serbian’s shot cannoned clear off the outside of the post.

With three minutes to play until the interval, Maya Yoshida almost snuck in to head Saints in front. The Japan international escaped Simon Francis in the penalty area to earn a free header at the near post, but powered wide.

Rodrguez too then had a chance to score before the break. He latched on to a long ball over the top of the Bournemouth back line and struck a fine first-time volley at goal, but was well denied by the strong wrist of former Saint Boruc.

Immediately after the restart Eddie Howe made his first change of the evening, as Andrew Surman hobbled off to be replaced by Harry Arter.

In what was a slow start after the break, Bournemouth created the first meaningful chance of the second half. Joshua King raced free and squared to Benik Afobe who had the whole goal to aim at, but struck wide of Forster’s near post.

That seemed to spark Saints into life and the ball swiftly moved down the other end for James Ward-Prowse to take aim from a tight angle, but his strike from the left flew past Boruc’s far post.

That was to be Ward-Prowse’s last contribution of the afternoon, as he was replaced by Sofiane Boufal. Rodriguez then also made way for the introduction of Shane Long.

Long almost broke the deadlock within minutes of being on the pitch. He raced in behind Steve Cook to latch onto Tadić’s cutting pass and chip goalwards over Boruc, but his effort fell agonisingly wide of the post.

The Cherries were not ready to lie down though, and soon had a good chance to go ahead. Adam Smith picked up a loose ball on the edge of the penalty and rammed it against the foot of Fraser’s post, before Gosling then thumped the rebound well over the crossbar.

On 78 minutes came the game’s big talking point. Substitute Jack Wilshere slipped Fraser into the penalty area and the Scotsman fell to the ground under the pressure of Ryan Bertrand, leaving referee Jonathan Moss to point to the spot.

Substitute Arter stepped up to take the spot kick for the Cherries, but slipped at the vital moment and launched his shot well over the crossbar.

Claude Puel then moved to make his final change of the evening, as Sam McQueen came on in favour of Tadić for the last ten minutes.

But for all their endeavour until the closing minutes of the match, Saints were unable to find a way through and had to make do with a share of the points.

Southampton 0-0 Bournemouth: Arter blazes over from the penalty spot

Show/hide article…

Oh dear, Harry Arter. His howler of a penalty miss cost Bournemouth what could be a vital extra two points against Southampton should they be drawn back into the relegation struggle.

And an alarmingly contagious spot kick fever is engulfing Bournemouth, having been so assured from 12 yards since joining the Premier League in 2015.

They scored 10 of their first 11 top flight penalties but have now spurned three in succession, Joshua King and Benik Afobe the other two culprits missing against West Ham last month and the jitters spreading to team-mate Arter.

‘I don’t know where we go next with our penalty taker,’ manager Eddie Howe joked. ‘Arter’s foot slipped, it’s one of those things, no-one goes there to miss. I have to respect those who put themselves up for it. It’s a difficult role.’

It was a forgettable occasion which will be hard to forget for Arter. In bizarrely similar circumstances to Harry Kane missing a spot kick in the same place when Spurs visited this season, the turf shifted dramatically under Arter’s planted foot just before he struck, causing him to skew the ball miles over the bar. It could’ve ended up back in Bournemouth.

‘Ideally I think a player shouldn’t be slipping when taking a penalty,’ Howe added, ‘but it’s a high pressure situation and these things happen.’

The ball did not go in and the match finished goalless and inched the teams a further point away from the prospect of going down, but they are both only seven clear of Hull City who keep winning in 18th. There could be a nasty twist in the tale for anyone from Southampton — in 10th — downwards that also includes Bournemouth, Watford, Leicester City and West Ham.

Had Arter converted it would have been a harsh end for Southampton in a match they controlled from the start, had plenty of chances to score and only relinquished their dominance in the final 20 minutes.

Jay Rodriguez, replacing the recent goal threat of the injured Manolo Gabbiadini, and Dusan Tadic were involved in several moments in the first half. The Serbian ran on to Rodriguez’s header on and powered a shot across goal and wide with his weaker right foot and later clipped the post with his left.

Shortly before the break, Rodriguez ran on to a long ball forward, steadied himself and powered a first-time shot at the right of goal, but Artur Boruc dived to push wide.

Andrew Surman stretched from a 33rd-minute corner and beat Fraser Forster but the ball was hacked from the line by Steven Davis as Bournemouth showed their threat. In the second half Benik Afobe shot wide when through on goal and they came closer still on 72 minutes, Adam Smith sending a low drive through a packed penalty box but he ball smacked the left post with Forster beaten as Bournemouth crept back into the game.

Eddie Howe brought on Jack Wilshere, starting from the bench for a fourth match in succession, in the No 10 role on 70 minutes and it coincided with a strong finish. The on loan Arsenal midfielder’s impact was felt in the 78th minute when he fed a ball through to Ryan Fraser and Ryan Bertrand tugged him down for a penalty. Arter’s spot kick was shocking.

Southampton 0-0 Bournemouth: Cherries miss out on south coast bragging rights after Harry Arter penalty blunder

Show/hide article…

Bournemouth squandered the opportunity to claim south coast bragging rights after Harry Arter’s late penalty miss against Southampton.

The Cherries were controversially awarded a chance to claim three points from the spot, following an apparent foul by Ryan Bertrand on Ryan Fraser.

Referee Jonathan Moss showed no hesitation with his decision, but Arter probably wish he had, after sending his penalty high into the stands akin to Harry Kane’s miss for Tottenham at the same end of the stadium earlier this season.

Arter looked to the spot in bewilderment, convinced that the turf had buckled under his weight, but his manager Eddie Howe spun in frustration, as he watched his midfielder prevent his side from claiming a third consecutive league victory.

A draw instead leaves Bournemouth 11th in the Premier League and level on 34 points with their 10th-placed rivals, who have two games in hand. They also sit seven points clear of the bottom three.

Following a week in which Southampton’s Dusan Tadic had complained about the frequency with which Claude Puel substitutes him and his manager had responded by telling him to respond on the pitch, the midfielder was gifted the game’s first chance.

He found himself with time and space to run into at the edge of the area in the fourth minute, but despite being well positioned the Serbian sent his left-footed shot both high and wide.

Bournemouth’s Dan Gosling shot over the crossbar from similar territory in the 29th minute after goalkeeper Fraser Forster’s unconvincing punched clearance.

Shortly afterwards, Southampton’s Steven Davis was then forced into clearing off the line after Andrew Surman touched Ryan Fraser’s right-wing corner beyond Forster, and from that point each team provided a regular threat.

Typically promising build-up play on the right wing between James Ward-Prowse and Cedric created space for the latter to cross to Tadic, and after Jay Rodriguez dummied, the midfielder curled just wide of the left post.

Tadic then played a classy ball over the top of Bournemouth’s defence towards Rodriguez, from where the forward took advantage of the kind bounce to shoot towards the top right corner. The diving Artur Boruc tipped the ball away.

Rodriguez had scored twice at Bournemouth in a 3-1 away victory in December, in perhaps his finest performance since injury disrupted his career in 2014. Here he remained an energetic presence, but the focal point and natural goal threat regularly provided by the injured Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini was sorely missed.

In the 61st minute, the visitors’ in-form Joshua King played Benik Afobe directly through on goal from where he seemed certain to score, but despite time and space he shot just inches wide.

Nathan Redmond responded by running through midfield and testing Boruc with a long-range strike, before Ward-Prowse sent the rebound wide as a goal continued to elude Southampton.

Puel responded by replacing Rodriguez and Ward-Prowse with Sofiane Boufal and Shane Long almost immediately afterwards, and the latter soon threatened when shooting just wide after another Tadic through-ball.

Bournemouth replaced King with Jack Wilshere, before striking the post when Adam Smith’s shot from the edge of the area took a subtle deflection off Ryan Bertrand.

In the 78th minute, Bertrand seemed unfortunate to be penalised when referee Jonathan Moss awarded the visitors a penalty once Fraser went down in the area after slight contact off the ball.

The stage was set for a Bournemouth victory in what was Southampton’s first match at St Mary’s in almost two months.

But Arter - much like David Beckham for England against Portugal at Euro 2004 - seemed unsteady on his feet and instead shot embarrassingly over the crossbar.

Southampton 0-0 AFC Bournemouth: Saints grateful for a missed penalty and a goal-line clearance

Show/hide article…

SAINTS were grateful for a goal-line clearance and a penalty miss as they shared a goalless draw at home to AFC Bournemouth.

Harry Arter blazed a 78th-minute spot-kick several feet over Fraser Forster’s cross bar after his standing foot slipped in front of the Northam Stand.

It was very similar to Harry Kane’s miss, from the same penalty spot, in Spurs’ 4-1 win at St Mary’s in December.

Arter’s miss was also greeted with much laughter from the Saints fans and summed up a match that seemed destined to finish goalless, given the number of missed opportunities.

Saints created more openings, but the visitors had the two best chances.

Steven Davis denied ex-Saint Andrew Surman with a 33rd-minute goal-line clearance and a brilliant save by Boruc kept out Jay Rodriguez’s stunning 44th-minute volley.

Adam Smith struck a post and Arter nearly made amends for his spot-kick miss but Forster flew to his left to keep out the midfielder’s swerving late cross-shot.

Otherwise both sides failed to test the respective goalkeepers enough, with Saints clearly missing Manolo Gabbiadini.

Dusan Tadic had an early chance to back up his recent complaints about being substituted too early.

When James Ward-Prowse’s header put him through he had time to pick his spot from the edge of the area, but fired over a left-footer.

Cherries had their moments during the first period.

Ryan Fraser’s cross from the left was headed clear and Charlie Daniels’ sent in a cross from a similar position before sliding in to tackle Rodriguez at the other end as the Saints forward galloped down the right flank.

Tadic fired a first-time cross shot wide of the far post and Rodriguez was flagged offside before putting the ball in the net at the second attempt after another wonderful delivery from Bertrand.

Saints were putting together some delightful passing patterns and from another Tadic pass, Rodriguez fired low from the left touchline, which Boruc was equal to at the near post.

Rodriguez appeared to win a corner at the near post, only for referee Jon Moss to award a corner kick, a decision that bore the wrath of the Saints fans in immediate proximity in the Northam Stand.

Nathan Redmond was brought down by Marc Pugh after a typically exciting run into the Cherries half, but the free-kick came to nothing as Romeu headed tamely into the hands of Boruc.

Brilliant defending from Stephens against King from Dan Gosling’s pass prevented Cherries’ in-form frontman from getting a clear sight of goal.

Sarcastic applause greeted Moss’s decision to award Saints a corner after a tackle on Rodriguez.

Fraser nearly intercepted it but collided with Ward-Prowse in doing so. He went down clutching his knee, before hobbling on, gamely.

He showed no sign of lasting damage when he delivered a couple of good corners cleared by a Yoshida header and a Forster punch, from which Gosling fired over.

Cherries’ best chance of the first half came in the 33rd minute, but Davis’s goal-line clearance kept Saints level.

When Ward-Prowse was penalised for hauling back King, Fraser responded with another good dead-ball delivery that Stephens headed behind for a corner.

Surman reacted quickest to the corner in the penalty area and poked the ball goalwards when he got there before Fraser Forster.

The former Saints midfielder required treatment after his collision with Forster, following Davis’s clearance in front of the relieved Chapel Stand.

Cedric delivered a couple of dangerous crosses in quick succession, the second of which created a chance for Tadic, who again missed the target, firing wide from 12 yards.

Jack Stephens did well to block a Benik Afobe strike before also requiring treatment following a collision with Forster, who clattered into him in his attempt to clear the ball in a packed penalty area.

As half-time drew near, Maya Yoshida sent a header flashing across goal and wide of the far post from a Tadic corner.

But the moment of the first half came in the 44th minute, when Boruc dived full stretch to his left to keep out Rodriguez’s thumping half volley, following a ball over the top.

It was heading for the top corner and would have been a goal-of-the-season contender to rank alongside his stunner at the Vitality Stadium in December.

Surman was replaced by Arter a couple of minutes into the second half, a change presumably related to his earlier collision with Forster.

After a quiet opening to the second half, and with the ball at the other end of the pitch, came the bizarre sight of a pitch invader trying to take a selfie with Forster.

Within a minute, Cherries missed a gilt-edged chance on the hour. Josh King slid the ball to the unmarked Afobe, who should have at least hit the target but fired wide of the left-hand upright as Forster came out to narrow the angle.

Redmond then had a shot saved by Boruc. After firing the follow- up across goal and wide, Ward Prowse was substituted in a double swap with Rodriguez also going off.

Boufal was bundled off the ball by Fraser in the penalty area after some sensational skill midway through the second half.

Moss waved away the claims for a penalty and it seemed as though the match was destined to finish goalless when Long dinked the ball over Boruc only to see the ball drift wide of the far post.

Soon after Jack Wilshere’s 70th-minute introduction, Cherries found a second wind. Smith skidded a 20-yarder against the foot of the post and a cross from the left was blocked as Wilshere lurked on the edge of the six-yard box.

Saints continued to defend manfully, with Romeu sliding in to deny the Arsenal man on the edge of the penalty area.

Then Cherries were awarded their penalty when Bertrand was adjudged to have tugged Fraser.

Arter’s standing foot gave way as he prepared to strike and he skied the ball high into the Northam Stand. Cue raucous laughter from the home fans. But Arter nearly had the last laugh with a powerful strike that Forster was equal to.

5 things we learned from Southampton 0-0 Bournemouth

Show/hide article…

Harry Arter missed a penalty as it finished honours even in the south coast derby.

Arter fired a 79th minute spot-kick over, after his standing foot lifted the turf before he struck the ball.

It was the best chance of a tight game between the two neighbours who both remain locked on 34 points.

Dusan Tadic hit the post for Southampton in the first half and Adam Smith did the same for Bournemouth after the break.

Opposing strikers Benik Afobe and Shane Long were also off target with good chances. But the best fell to Arter who wasted it after Ryan Bertrand was penalised for bringing down Ryan Fraser.

Bournemouth are the kings of winning penalties but have lost their ability to put them away.

The Cherries were awarded their 10th Premier League penalty of the season against Southampton, the highest in the league.

But their tally remains at seven converted after Harry Arter unluckily spooned the 79th minute spot-kick over the bar.

They have now missed their last three spot-kicks, all taken by three different players. Josh King and Benik Afobe each missed penalties in their 3-2 win against West Ham last month.

And Arter’s failure to score from 12 yards means Bournemouth’s wait for a win at Southampton goes on.

They have never tasted victory on their south coast rivals’ soil since the first meeting between the clubs in 1953.

Bournemouth have lost eight and drawn four of their 12 games in all competitions at Southampton.

Dusan Tadic was challenged to “give good answers on the pitch” by boss Claude Puel after moaning about being subbed too often.

Unfortunately he left his shooting boots at home. Tadic had three clear chances to score against Bournemouth but screwed the first two off target before hitting the post with the third.

A goal would have been the ideal answer from the Serbia international after he got a ticking off for saying “I don’t think the coach needs to substitute me, but I deserve more respect.”

Other than the missed chances Tadic had a decent game and looked capable of creating something for Southampton. But that still didn’t spare him the hook.

Fraser Forster wasn’t at fault for conceding against Bournemouth but that was more by luck than judgement.

For a man mountain, Forster doesn’t command his box or spread confidence. At times he looks a bag of nerves when the ball is put into his box.

That must be starting to cause a little concern for Southampton and England, given he is Joe Hart’s backup.

More than once Southampton’s defenders must have expected better from their goalkeeper.

He came and flapped at an early corner before missing a later loose ball which almost led to a goal for Andrew Surman.

Soon after he came for a free-kick, spilled the ball and to compound the mess clattered into Jack Stephens, leaving the young defender needing treatment.

On another occasion he did nothing, failing to communicate with his teammates, and Southampton needlessly conceded a corner.

The sight of Manolo Gabbiadini back in the Southampton team will be a welcome one for Southampton.

No sooner had he emerged as THE answer to their goalscoring woes, and lack of Charlie Austin, with his spectacular start to life at the club, he got injured at Tottenham.

Thanks to the international break he has only missed just under games and could be back for Wednesday’s clash against Palace. But in his absence the two men who have filled in have come up short.

Shane Long struggled to stay onside against Spurs then missed a great chance when he came on against Bournemouth. Jay Rodriguez started against Bournemouth, put in a shift and caused problems with his runs in behind the visitors defence but aside from one chance, didn’t threaten goal.

Fleming: We created a lot of chances

Show/hide article…

Saints fought back from one down to take a 2-1 lead into the half-time break, but the visitors then equalised after the break to secure a share of the points.

“I thought it was a very good game,” explained Fleming.

“But we created an awful lot of chances in the game and it was a couple of mistakes defensively from us for both of their goals, really.

“Apart from that they didn’t really threaten us – I think the story of it was really that we created an awful lot of chances and didn’t really take them.”

Mackenzie Heaney’s free-kick gave Newcastle an early lead at Staplewood Campus, as he curled over the wall and under goalkeeper Adam Parkes.

But Fleming was pleased with the manner in which his side netted two goals in as many minutes to take a lead into the break.

“They showed great resilience there,” he continued.

“That’s something that we’ve really worked on. Previously we have conceded one and then before you know it it’s two or three very quickly.

“But they dug in towards the end of the first half and we managed to come into the break on top. It was just a shame, then, that it was an individual mistake for their equaliser.”

Puel on Bournemouth stalemate

Show/hide article…

After starting the game well and creating a number of opportunities, the visitors came closest in the second-half when Harry Arter blazed over from the penalty spot.

Puel reflected: “It’s a little disappointment to take just one point against Bournemouth but when we see the game, it’s a normal draw because we cannot score from different opportunities in the first half.

“At the end the opponent took confidence and finished strongly. It was difficult to finish the game for us with many players tired from their travel and international games.

“We need to score when we are dominating the game. It was a very good start with good opportunities.

“We didn’t find a clinical edge and it was a shame. In the second-half we started with a good spirit but afterwards it was difficult to keep this intensity for all of the game and we could have lost it.”

Bournemouth’s Arter calls on Southampton to inspect penalty spot

Show/hide article…

Harry Arter admitted to costing Bournemouth all three points on Saturday after firing his penalty well over the crossbar at St Mary’s.

However, Arter suggested that Southampton may have to inspect their penalty spot after Harry Kane similarly missed from 12 yards from the same position earlier in the season.

Eddie Howe’s side were awarded the penalty in the second half after Ryan Bertrand allegedly brought down Ryan Fraser.

But midfielder Arter blazed his spot-kick well over the crossbar during the goalless draw as the ground appeared to move beneath him.

And speaking to BT Sport after the final whistle, Arter insisted that he was disappointed with his horrible miss on the weekend.

Arter said: ‘I feel obviously if I score, then we would have got three points. I didn’t intentionally miss of course so as much as it’s disappointing, that’s part and parcel of football and I’ve just got to get on with it.’

Incidentally, Tottenham’s Harry Kane also missed a penalty from the exact same spot by firing the ball over the bar when his side played Southampton earlier on in the season.

And 27-year-old Arter, who spoke about Kane’s miss, added that Southampton may have to inspect the penalty spot.

Asked whether he blamed the groundsman, Arter replied: ‘It’s my fault. I think one of the lads said Harry Kane did something similar earlier this season in the exact same spot so maybe for them they need to have a little look at it.’

Furthermore, Ian Wright failed to put the blame on Arter’s shoulders, saying that the Bournemouth man missed due to the ground moving underneath him.

Wright said: 'The last thing he is thinking is that the ground is going to move. You can see the ground has moved underneath him and obviously the ball just moved a fraction.

‘It didn’t pop up like Harry Kane’s did but the only reason why he has missed the target there is that the grounds moved.’

Saints might feel lucky to have come away from this match with a point.

A goal-line clearance by Steven Davis, a penalty miss by Harry Arter and some awful finishing by Benik Afobe meant Saints’ goal remained intact here.

Yoshida: We need to be more aggressive

Show/hide article…

Saints were unable to find a way through against the Cherries, despite Dušan Tadić striking the post and Jay Rodriguez having his first-half strike ruled out.

“We need to be a little bit more aggressive,” explained Yoshida.

“We were well organised defensively today and happy, as a defence, to get the clean sheet. But, if I am honest, today was a bit lucky.

“We can take confidence from the clean sheet because it was one that we needed, and hopefully that will help us to go forward now and progress.”

Claude Puel’s men will be straight back into Premier League action on Wednesday night, when they welcome Crystal Palace to St Mary’s.

And Yoshida is well aware, given Palace’s recent win over Chelsea, what a threat the south London club will be.

“There are many games coming now,” he continued.

“So we have to be fresh and work on the recovery so that we can come back on Wednesday night against Crystal Palace.

“They played well today and beat Chelsea, so we will have to be ready for them. They have a good squad with a number of quality players, so we know it will be tough.”

Southampton 0-0 AFC Bournemouth: Puel - draw was a fair result

Show/hide article…

SAINTS boss Claude Puel admitted he was happy with a point after AFC Bournemouth’s strong finish to the goalless draw at St Mary’s.

The visitors had the best opportunities but Harry Arter missed a penalty – a replica of Harry Kane’s skier from the same spot during Spurs’ 4-1 win in December – and Adam Smith struck a post after Steven Davis had cleared off the line from Andrew Surman.

Puel said: “The draw is a fair result, we had a good start and a good first half but they came back with good opportunities in the second half.

“We needed to be more clinical in front of goal as we were playing a team with good quality and good organisation.

“It’s not an excuise but after an international break it is always difficult. Playing two games in a month makes it hard.”

On Arter’s miss, Cherries boss Eddie Howe said: “Those things happen, no-one goes there to miss. Josh King would have taken it, but he went off. I always respect people who put themselves up for taking penalties.

“I’m just glad we’re getting in positions to score, it’s pleasing we are creating those opportunities.

"Ideally a player shouldn’t slip taking a penalty but it was a high-pressure situation and these things happen.

“We were excellent in the second half, we dominated the last 25 minutes and on another day we’d have scored two or three against a very good team.

“They showed that in the first half, we didn’t get to grips with them. We can’t be too disappointed with a point away from home, this is a tough place to come.”

Howe also confirmed that ex Saint Andrew Surman’s knee is in a brace after he was substituted following a first half collision with Fraser Forster.
