Stoke City v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Stoke are hampered by a shortage of defensive options, with Bruno Martins Indi and Ryan Shawcross both injured.

Kevin Wimmer and Geoff Cameron are doubts because of hamstring problems but Kurt Zouma is available after being ineligible to face Chelsea last week.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino could hand Virgil van Dijk his first start of the season having been restored to the bench in recent weeks.

Matt Targett has returned to training but is unlikely to be risked.

Martin Fisher: "Stoke’s central defensive injury crisis might just be what Southampton need to help them address their chronic goal shortage.

"Saints have failed to score in four of their six games this season, and two of the goals they have scored have come from the penalty spot.

"The likes of Shawcross, Cameron, Wimmer and Martins Indi have all been in the treatment room recently. Another enforced patched-up rearguard could impinge on Mark Hughes’s prospects of ending Stoke’s winless run of four matches.

“Another defeat could see them drop into the relegation zone but will Southampton be firing blanks yet again?”

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "I don’t think our current position truly reflects how well we’ve performed against some tough opposition at the start of the season.

“Saturday will be a difficult game but given what we’ve faced so far at home it’s one we can look forward to and enjoy.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino on his side’s lack of goals: "It’s not about more strikers, wingers or pushing the full-backs higher - it’s just about quality in the final third.

“Goals complete your job as a striker, and I can highlight all of them. We need all our offensive players to be better in the final third.”

Southampton played well against Manchester United last weekend and almost nicked a point but I am expecting an improvement from Stoke (after defeat to Chelsea), which is why I am backing them to win this one.

THE MATCH

Stoke City vs Southampton

Saturday 30 September, 3pm BST

Bet365 Stadium

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints remain unbeaten on the road in the Premier League so far this season, while Stoke’s only win home or away came against Arsenal six weeks ago.

The Potters were hammered 4-0 by Chelsea at the bet365 Stadium last time out, following a surprise Carabao Cup exit to Bristol City.

The visit of Southampton will be the first time Stoke have hosted opponents from outside last season’s top five so far in the new campaign.

If Saints can keep a clean sheet, it will be the first time in the club’s history we have started a league season with three successive away shutouts.

TEAM NEWS

Stoke City: Mark Hughes’ preparations have been hampered by a defensive injury crisis.

Ryan Shawcross and Bruno Martins Indi are definitely out, while Kevin Wimmer is unlikely to be risked.

Hughes is more hopeful of welcoming back Geoff Cameron following a hamstring problem, and Kurt Zouma is available again after he was ineligible to face parent club Chelsea last week.

Southampton: Mauricio Pellegrino reported no new injury concerns at his pre-match press conference.

The Saints boss spoke of Virgil van Dijk’s progress, with the defender not having started a first-team game for eight months, but said it will take more time to see “the best version” of the Dutchman.

A man of obvious ability, Xherdan Shaqiri can cause a headache to even the best Premier League defences when on top of his game.

The Swiss’ toughest opponent since moving to the Potteries in 2015 has arguably been his own inconsistency, but the former Inter Milan and Bayern Munich winger possesses a sweet left foot and is tough to dispossess with his stocky build.

Following the summer sale of Marko Arnautović to West Ham United, Stoke will look to Shaqiri to provide a creative spark in the final third of the pitch.

Ten of Southampton’s 11 Premier League goals against Stoke have been scored in the first half – and none have come later than the 57th minute.

35.3% of Stoke’s passes have ended in the final third of the pitch this season in the Premier League; a higher proportion than any other side.

Opposition View: Stoke City

Show/hide article…

The Potters have endured a tricky start to the season, facing Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in their three previous Premier League home games.

Saints are three points better off in the league table, but recent history would back up Hughes’ opinion – all of the last 16 meetings between the sides have been won by the odd goal or drawn.

“I would suggest we’re two evenly matched sides and they’re a good side who, on their day, can play exceptionally well and cause you problems, like we can,” he said.

“We need to make sure that we dictate to them, make sure they don’t get any momentum to their play and take the game from them.

“They’re good collectively and good individually, so we will need to make sure that we are ready.”

Stoke have been suffering with a defensive crisis. Hughes was without injured trio Ryan Shawcross, Geoff Cameron and Kevin Wimmer against Chelsea last week, while Bruno Martins Indi hobbled off late in the game with a groin problem.

Kurt Zouma was also absent, ineligible against his parent club, but returns to the squad to face Saints.

“Kurt is a top-level defender and one who has a great future ahead of him, so we are looking forward to having him back on Saturday,” Hughes added.

“We are hopeful on Geoff Cameron, which would be a big positive for us.

“In terms of the defensive injuries we have, he is realistically the only one who has a genuine chance of taking part.”

U23s Report: Saints 1-2 Watford

Show/hide article…

Southampton Under-23s slipped to a narrow defeat in their Premier League Cup opener in a tale of three penalties at Staplewood.

Radhi Jaïdi’s side scored one and missed one, but were unable to rescue the game having found themselves 2-0 down deep into the second half.

Michael Folivi scored the first of the spot-kicks, benefiting from a dubious decision in his favour, before Marcus Barnes was denied by Watford keeper Nathan Gartside.

Brice Dja Djedje doubled the Hornets’ lead 20 minutes into the second period, and the visitors were hanging on after Callum Slattery converted from the spot 12 minutes from time.

The young Saints will feel they should have edged in front inside two minutes.

Barnes found space in behind the Watford defence on the Southampton right and crossed deep for Tyreke Johnson, who rose well at the far post.

As Johnson’s header looped towards the corner of the net, Jonathan Afolabi stretched out a leg in an attempt to provide the finishing touch, but could only toe the ball against the upright from close range.

The hosts were unable to build on their bright start, despite the Watford backline looking susceptible to crosses.

The Hornets threatened for the first time in the 17th minute, but goalkeeper Jack Rose stood tall to gather Dion Pereira’s driven shot.

The visitors were growing in confidence and took the lead from the penalty spot when Folivi tricked his way into the box, before referee Adrian Quelch ruled he had been held back with a decision so soft even the striker looked bemused.

Folivi kept his nerve to score straight down the middle, before Saints got away with what looked a much more clear-cut penalty appeal soon after.

Quelch had another big decision to make when Afolabi reacted quickest to Johnson’s low cross and was clearly tripped by Charlie Rowan.

Up stepped Barnes, but Gartside guessed correctly, diving to his right to deny the winger with a fine save.

There was greater intensity about Saints after the restart, as Slattery released Johnson, whose low cross just skipped up awkwardly in front of Afolabi and the chance eluded him.

But Watford then enjoyed a good spell in search of a second goal.

Saints’ Ollie Cook slid full length to block a low shot from Dennon Lewis, whose dangerous corner was nodded inches wide by Max Ryan, before Dja Djedje lashed over when he just needed some composure from 15 yards.

Unfortunately for Saints, Dja Djedje was just getting his eye in, and thundered home a crisp strike from 20 yards to leave Rose no chance and Jaïdi’s young charges with a mountain to climb.

But the hosts showed their character and set up a grandstand finish when Slattery picked himself up after being barged in the back to dispatch an unerring spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Saints piled on the pressure, but Gartside saved brilliantly from Aaron O’Driscoll’s close-range header before Slattery rifled over in stoppage time.
