Davis: Saints face a “massive” run

Show/hide article…

STEVEN Davis knows that Saints’ next run of favourable fixtures will be “massive” in the context of their season.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have lost back-to-back Premier League matches, but have the chance to get back on track with several winnable games.

Saints have three home games in the next run of four matches, with the only away trip to newly-promoted Brighton.

They play Newcastle, West Brom and Burnley at St Mary’s, so there’s big scope in this next run for Saints to finally build some momentum.

Davis said: “It’s massive. We need to try and put a run of results together and wins at that.

“We’re not where we’d like to be at this stage of the season after the games that we’ve played.

“Performances as a whole have been of a decent standard but results haven’t been what we wanted and it’s important we marry the two together.”

Captain Davis would have liked to head-off on a crucial international break on a high, but that was not possible after Saints’ 2-1 defeat at Stoke.

“It’s never easy to go away for the ten days after this. We wanted to go away on a high and that’s not the case this time,” he said.

“But in football there’s always the next game and you have to concentrate on that and that will be with the national side.”

Davis and the Northern Ireland play world champions Germany and Norway in World Cup qualifiers this week.

Michael O’Neill’s side secured second spot in Group C and only an unlikely series of results will deny them a place in the play-offs next month.

“It’s going to be a massive test,” he said about the Germany game. “We know all the quality that they’ve got and how much they test you.

“We couldn’t have a much bigger test, but it’s a good game for us and one that our fans and ourselves are looking forward to.”

Davis is focused on keeping the momentum that Northern Ireland have built up during an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign.

“We don’t really know what the permutations are exactly but you’d expect the points that we’re on to be in the mix for that,” he said.

“We want to go out there and keep that momentum up that we’ve got and finish the group strongly.”

WATCH & VOTE: Premier League Goal of the Month for September

Leroy Sane? Kevin De Bruyne? Harry Kane? Watch our pick of the Premier League goals from September and vote for your favourite.

Check out our pick of eight stellar strikes from the second month of the season in the video above and then vote for the best.

The Dutch full-back’s thunderbolt wrapped up Watford’s win at St Mary’s.

The winger’s curler from the edge of the area completed Man City’s resounding victory over Liverpool at the Etihad.

United’s right-back gave his side the lead against Everton with a beautifully struck first-time volley that flew past a helpless Jordan Pickford.

The champions’ record signing scored a stunning hat-trick at the bet365 Stadium, the pick of which was his second strike, a wonderful solo effort.

Drafted in as a makeshift left-back in place of the injured Benjamin Mendy, Delph rounded off the home team’s scoring with this sensational long ranger.

The twinkle-toed Brazil international’s first Premier League goal of the season was certainly worth the wait, an unstoppable 25-yard free-kick to double Liverpool’s lead at the King Power.

City’s Belgian midfielder settled this clash at the home of the champions by beating compatriot Thibaut Courtois with a thunderbolt from just outside the area.

Kane bagged a brace at Huddersfield, but it was the red-hot striker’s second of the game that really caught the eye.

Ryan Bertrand hoping to use high profile ‘to do more’ for those affected by Grenfell Tower fire

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand has immersed himself in the process of helping victims from the Grenfell Tower fire, saying he wants to use his status “to do more” for those affected by the tragedy.

The Southampton full-back grew up in Southwark but, having lived in a similar tower block and spent so much time in south-west London too, said that the June disaster, which claimed a confirmed 68 lives, particularly “struck a nerve”.

That led to the 28-year-old wanting to use his profile as a footballer to help the victims’ situation.

“Over the last few years, there have been catastrophes everywhere, but that was on our doorstep nearby,” Bertrand explained. “I just wanted to do something more. I had friends who grew up in similar circumstances, so it hit me. I had a few friends from the estate, so we wanted to see what we could do.

“I went down to the estate to ask questions, see how things were going, get a feel for it and see what I could do to make a difference. We’re in the process of seeing if we can do a few things, and I don’t want to say too much. But things are on-going.

“It was a bit out of control. There was no main structure when I was down there. That was blocking things. No one knew who to go to, who was dealing with this or that.

“It struck a nerve. Growing up in similar tower blocks when I was a kid, albeit in different areas of London, it was somewhere close by. I’m in a half decent position so maybe I could do more than just donate. Donating is great – I’m not saying that’s a bad thing – but I took a bit of time and went down there hoping to try and change something, even if it was one family’s lives. It can be life-changing.

“I great up in south-east London, Southwark, so not right there but I spent a good few years in south-west London and I’m familiar with the territory. Most families – my Nan, my aunties still live in tower blocks… They love it. It’s home to them.”

Bertrand also said he realised that one of the advantages of being a footballer is that his visibility and profile could help with efforts.

“That’s exactly what I thought. I’m not saying ‘I’m Ryan Bertrand flying in to see what I could do’. I’m not the biggest footballer in the world. But I have some sort of status so I just wanted to see what I could do to help… that was the main idea. To do more. A little bit more.

“This came up and resonated with me. I thought I could do more.”

Jaïdi expects physical game

Show/hide article…

One of 16 invited clubs invited to field an under-21 side in the competition, Saints progressed to the knockout stages last year, but will have their work cut out against League Two’s 12th-placed side tonight.

The U’s enter the tie in mixed form, but are unbeaten at home since the beginning of August, and drew one apiece with the group’s other competitors, Northampton Town, in the first round of fixtures.

Previewing the tie, coach Radhi Jaïdi said: "We’ve spoken to the players about games coming thick and fast, and they are important games.

"We’re playing a senior team at their stadium, so it’ll be challenging for our boys. They need to be ready to bounce back and react following Friday’s game (a 2-1 defeat to Watford for Saints’ Under-23s side).

"It is a great opportunity; how are the younger boys going to deal with the challenge? The ones who step up will send a good message.

"It’s both encouraging and intimidating to play in a stadium, you have to deal with the crowds as well as the opposition, and the psychological side of the game.

“I’m expecting it to be physical and direct, the ball will be in the air, and obviously if you give them time and space they will play.”

Southampton FC news: Luciano Vietto set for January move away from Atletico Madrid

Show/hide article…

Atletico Madrid could be ready to cash in on Southampton target Luciano Vietto this January, according to reports in Spain.

The 23-year-old striker was one of the Saints’ top targets during the summer as they attempted to bolster their attacking options.

However, they were unable to lure the Argentinean to England and have struggled in front of goal during the first few months of the season.

Southampton have managed just five goals in their first seven Premier League games and it has been suggested that a new striker could be brought in when the window opens.

Again, Vietto is expected to be high on their wish list and, according to Marca, Atletico may be willing to do business.

The Spanish club will welcome Diego Costa back into their squad in January and Vietto, who has failed to score in five league appearances this term, could be the one to make way.

And now it has been reported that Atletico would then consider him surplus to requirements, which may open the door for Southampton to swoop.

Slattery on dealing with the physical test

Show/hide article…

Abbey Stadium will play host to the Checkatrade Trophy tie, a competition that Saints’ youngsters thrived in last term, topping their group with two wins and a draw.

Having lost to Peterborough in the first round of fixtures, Saints will be keen to get their points tally off the mark at the expense of Shaun Derry’s side, who currently lie 12th in the League Two standings.

Speaking ahead of the game, the midfielder said: "No specific targets, I just aim for plenty of goals and good performances throughout the season. Of course, goals are a good thing to add.

"We’ve experienced this [competition] before, we played Peterborough not that long ago, which was a physical test. It is nothing new, we know what we’re coming up against. We’ll get the ball down and look to play, but also deal with the physical challenge.

“Nothing changes in terms of our preparation. There will be a crowd, which plays a part, but you have to block that out and concentrate on the game – it is part of senior football.”
