Oriol Romeu believes Southampton should not start pointing fingers amid poor form

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu has urged his Southampton teammates not to start pointing fingers at each other after an eight-match winless run.

Their last victory was a 4-1 win over Everton in November but Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have picked up a morale-boosting point against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Southampton host Crystal Palace at St Mary’s on Tuesday and Romeu says he and his teammates are determined to work together to achieve a turnaround in their fortunes.

“When you are in this situation it is not good to point at something,” Romeu told Sky Sports.

"You need to look at the overall feeling and be honest. We all need to look at ourselves and see what we are not doing right and correct those things.

“I wouldn’t say it is one specific thing - either physically, tactically or technically. It is just a matter of getting all those things together and pushing the team in the same direction.”

Maya Yoshida conceded last month the situation at Southampton was worse under Pellegrino than his predecessor Claude Puel but the Argentine manager vowed to stick to his footballing philosophy after his side’s encouraging point last Saturday.

Romeu doesn’t believe Pellegrino deserves to take the brunt of the criticism and insisted it is up to the players to make their performances count on the pitch.

“We don’t like the manager going and there to be constant changes - it doesn’t help,” said Romeu.

"The ones that are playing are us so we are the ones that have to sort this situation out.

"Of course, the staff, the manager have to correct things and make us play better football. We are the ones that are going to be playing out on the pitch so of course we have to improve and look at what we are not doing right.

“The manager is not the one that is doing everything wrong.”

The Spanish footballer also dismissed assertions that the Southampton players were not playing for their manager.

"I didn’t have that feeling but maybe from the outside you can have it. I don’t think the lads are playing their own game.

“If I see someone who is not giving their best we will tell them and always do the right things.”

Which Premier League stars are out of contract in the summer?

With the January transfer window now open, we look at which players are out of contract next summer.

The ongoing Alexis Sanchez contract saga at Arsenal has dominated the headlines, but a host of his fellow Gunners could leave the Emirates on free transfers in July.

Those players include Per Mertesacker, who is retiring, Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil, Carl Jenkinson, and Jack Wilshere, according to transfermarkt.co.uk.

United also face a potential exodus. Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini could leave for free in the summer, while the club would have to activate 12-month extension options to keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Daley Blind, Ashley Young, Juan Mata, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera.

Crystal Palace have an entire team who could be free agents next summer, including Julian Speroni, Damien Delaney, Yohan Cabaye, James McArthur, Wayne Hennessey, Bakary Sako, Joel Ward, Martin Kelly, Chung-Yong Lee and Freddie Ladapo.

West Brom and Stoke could both lose numerous players, including Gareth McAuley, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Gareth Barry, Boaz Myhill, James Morrison (extension option), Chris Brunt (extension option) and Claudio Yacob (extension option) for the Baggies, and Glen Johnson, Charlie Adam and Jese for the Potters.

Meanwhile, Burnley may see five players depart for free next summer, including Dean Marney, Anders Lindegaard, Stephen Ward, Fredrik Ulvestad and Scott Arfield.

Everton have a high-profile star on an expiring contract in the shape of Ross Barkley, while Joel Robles and Aaron Lennon will also be available on a free next summer.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth could lose the likes of Artur Boruc, Rhoys Wiggins and Marc Pugh for nothing next summer, while Yaya Toure and Fernandinho may leave Man City for free in July 2018.

Other big names with less than a year remaining on their contracts include Willy Caballero (Chelsea), Emre Can (Liverpool), Robert Huth (Leicester), James Collins and Diafra Sakho (West Ham), Michel Vorm (Tottenham) and Jose Holebas, Ben Watson and Miguel Britos (Watford).

Check out your club’s list of players with contracts expiring in July below…

Yoshida on Palace clash

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida is intent on using the Manchester United performance as a platform for improving results, with today’s crucial Crystal Palace clash nearing.

St Mary’s will host its first Premier League fixture of 2018 this evening and the defender is aware of just how significant a positive result would be, with Roy Hodgson’s side a mere point adrift in the league standings.

“Palace are close to us in the table,” Yoshida began. "And through the season we’ve lost too many points against teams who are around us.

"It is a home game and the beginning of a new year, and I’d like to wish Saints fans a great one.

"I think a lot of confidence can be taken from the United result, but it isn’t just about that one game.

“We need a string of good games to build confidence, to keep clean sheets, and the results will improve.”

Does January transfer spending achieve Premier League success?

Show/hide article…

Does January transfer spending achieve league success? We’ve crunched last season’s numbers to find out…

Last year, five of the big six clubs made a net profit from winter transfers, while Arsenal barely recorded a net spend with £100,000 on youngster Cohen Brammall.

In terms of results, Liverpool suffered a torrid January in 2017, their title bid derailing with three draws and one defeat in the league - and just one win out of nine in all competitions.

However, despite the dip in form, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp failed to add to his squad at all during the window. That inactivity may have contributed to a league-high points-per-game drop of 0.26 during the second half of the season.

This term, Klopp has acted quickly to bolster his much-criticised defence and secured the signature of summer target Virgil van Dijk for £75m from Southampton.

Last season, Premier League clubs made a combined net profit of £32m from winter transfer dealings in 2017 - but clubs at the lower end of the table bucked the trend.

Crystal Palace suffered a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on New Year’s Day last year and sat 17th in the Premier League table - just two points ahead of Sunderland and the drop zone.

However, Sam Allardyce had replaced Alan Pardew at the helm on December 23 and splashed a league-high £39m on Patrick van Aanholt, Luka Milivojevic and Jeffrey Schlupp - in addition to loaning Mamadou Sakho - to secure survival and finish 14th.

Swansea were rock bottom at this stage last year, with 12 points from 19 games, but a £13m spree on Tom Carroll, Martin Olsson, Luciano Narsingh and a swap deal for Jordan Ayew helped the Swans retain top-flight status, rising five places to 15th and increase their points-per-game ratio by a league-high 0.45.

But Palace and Swansea were the only two clubs to have been among the biggest spenders and make notable progress in the league come May. Everton also spent heavily and improved their points-per-game ratio significantly to retain seventh place.

Like this season, Burnley were flying high in 11th last year and spent £18m on Robbie Brady and Ashley Westwood - but suffered a league-high drop of five places by the end of the season.

Middlesbrough also hovered above the relegation places in 16th and had only scored 17 goals from 19 fixtures. But a £20m January spree on strikers Patrick Bamford and Rudy Gestede - in addition to midfielder Adlene Guedioura - proved ineffective with only 12 goals scored during the second half of the season, as the club suffered relegation.

Sunderland recorded a net profit from January dealings, with David Moyes offloading Van Aanholt for £14m and only signing his former Everton players Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo for £4.5m each - but dropped two places to finish bottom of the table.

Watford sat in 13th on New Year’s Day last year, and also boasted profit from the winter window with a £24m surplus - but the Hornets crashed four places to narrowly avoid the drop in May.

Typically, clubs fighting for survival are more active during the winter window, while Crystal Palace and Swansea both proved there is potential for considerable improvement from making effective signings.

However, winter spending does not always translate into league improvement, as Burnley and Middlesbrough showed last year.

But, after a summer of record-breaking transfer fees and price inflation, clubs fighting for survival could struggle to recruit effectively within their budgets and may source more players on loan.

“You can feel comfortable” – McQueen hails McCarthy

Show/hide article…

SAM McQueen has hailed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after he replaced Fraser Forster in the 0-0 draw at Manchester United on Saturday.

Ahead of tonight’s huge match against Crystal Palace at St Mary’s, McQueen says “you can feel comfortable” when he’s between the sticks and that he’s “someone you can rely on”.

The 28-year-old stopper performed well at Old Trafford and recorded a clean sheet on his first appearance in the Premier League for Saints.

Forster was dropped after the 5-2 drubbing at Tottenham and following 11 successive games without a clean sheet.

“He was bang on, he’s been working hard in training and he’s played some of the under-23s games with me and he’s been class in those,” said McQueen, who made his first start of the league campaign at United, about McCarthy.

“He makes some great saves and he’s solid; he never makes mistakes and he’s someone you can rely on.

“When he’s in the goal you can feel comfortable and the players know that because they’ve seen him in training and he’s a good guy and everyone’s happy he’s done so well.

“Fraser and him are good friends and I think even Fraser’s buzzing Alex has performed the way he has.”

The 22-year-old believes Forster will keep working hard to get back in the team – despite the disappointment of missing his first game of the season after starting all 21 games from the beginning of the season to the Boxing Day thrashing at Spurs.

“Everyone knows what they’ve signed up for [in professional sport] and if they don’t they shouldn’t be in it,” said McQueen.

“Fraser’s a professional player. He’s going to work just as hard as he was before.

“You never know, football is so chop and change, next week Fraser could be back in and he could have the game of his life and could be an absolute hero.

“No one lets things get to them that much; they just worry about themselves, worry about their personal issues and deal with them in the best way they can.”

McQueen revealed that manager Mauricio Pellegrino’s attitude helped Saints pull themselves out of the doldrums at United – and now they want to build on it against Crystal Palace tonight at St Mary’s.

He said: “It was mentality; the manager has a great mentality of never say die, never give up and believe in what you do and what you do as person.

“He believes in us as players and a team. Boxing Day was tough, people were obviously devastated – there was a bit of worry.

“But the manager and the senior players know how to get out those situations.

"We just worked on going back to basics, organisation on the training ground and working on things as a unit rather than individually.

“Tonight I think that showed the way we working, the way we pressed and dropped off and slid across the pitch as a team.

He added: “I’m shattered a little bit. Personally I was just trying to keep up with the pace of the game. It was my first game in a while so I was a bit off the pace to start with.

“But as a team I think we were really good, really organised and through a tough period I think that gives us a block to build something from hopefully.”

Southampton, Everton keen on Arsenal’s Theo Walcott - sources

Show/hide article…

Southampton and Everton have made enquiries about the availability of Arsenal forward Theo Walcott during the January transfer window, sources close to the Gunners have told ESPN FC.

Walcott has found his first-team opportunities at Arsenal limited this season, making just four Premier League appearances with most of his outings coming in the cup competitions.

The 28-year-old is frustrated at finding himself on the fringes of Arsene Wenger’s plans at the Emirates and sources have told ESPN FC that Walcott has spoken to the Arsenal boss about his future.

Walcott is in the final 18 months of his contract at Arsenal and the club would prefer to sell him rather than loan him out during this month, but a lot depends on whether Arsenal manage to keep hold of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in January as Wenger does not want to leave himself short of attacking options for the second half of the campagin with the Gunners battling for honours on four fronts.

Southampton and Everton are both waiting to see what Arsenal decide to do with Walcott after making their interest known in the England international.

Walcott started his career at Southampton before joining Arsenal as a teenager in 2006 and they hope that would give them an advantage in the race for Walcott’s signature if Arsenal sanction his departure.

Southampton are looking to bolster their attacking options in January as they aim to climb clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table and they have money to spend following the £75 million sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool.

Everton are also in the market for forward reinforcements this month as Sam Allardyce looks to add more goals to his side and he is a long-term admirer of Walcott.
