Saint Etienne 0-3 Southampton: Saints earn friendly victory in France

Show/hide article…

Three second half goals saw Southampton to pick up a pre-season victory over Ligue 1 side Saint Etienne.

After a goalless first 65 minutes at a tiny stadium in Chambery, the Saints broke through with two goals in as many minutes.

Manolo Gabbiadini headed home Matt Targett’s cross, before the young left back again provided, with a low ball turned in by James Ward-Prowse - who himself provided the assist via a corner for Maya Yoshida late on.

The opening goal came via a quick move from the back, with Targett crossing from deep and Gabbiadini helping it over the goalkeeper with a header from 15 yards.

Targett then provided a very different kind of cross - a daisy cutter from near the byline after an overlapping run - but with the same result as Ward-Prowse finished with power with his right foot.

In the last few minutes, Ward-Prowse played a perfect outswinging corner to the near post from the right, Yoshida powering in the header from six yards.

Pellegrino secures first Saints win

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino claimed his first win as Saints boss as his side rounded off their pre-season trip to France with a 3-0 victory over St Etienne.

The Ligue 1 side provided reasonable opposition in Chambery, but Saints proved too strong with Manolo Gabbiadini and James Ward-Prowse scoring in the space of two second half minutes before Maya Yoshida added a third.

After draws with St Gallen and Brentford, the win was a welcome boost for Pellegrino, who started Charlie Austin in a deeper role off of Gabbiadini.

After a fairly benign opening to the match, Kevin Monnet-Paquet had the first effort of any note on 34 minutes but fired into the side netting for St Etienne.

Gabbiadini should have given Saints the lead a minute later as Loic Perrin presented him with a golden chance via an horrendous pass across his own six yard box. However, the Italian striker slid in and put wide from a couple of yards out.

Gabbiadini had a couple more efforts before the break, blazing narrowly over with a half volley from just inside the area and forcing Stephane Ruffier into a good save down to his left after firing across goal.

The second half was an altogether livelier affair, which Saints certainly had the better of.

They got an early let-off when Jonathan Bamba’s shot took a deflection and struck the post, while Kenny Rocha Santos produced a weak far post header to hand half time sub Stuart Taylor a more comfortable save than he should have had.

After Sofiane Boufal’s diving header was blocked by the legs of Ruffier, Saints took control of the game with a quick-fire double.

Matt Targett, a second half replacement for Ryan Bertrand, created them both from left-back.

The first, on 64 minutes, found a header from Gabbiadini from 15 yards out which seemed to take Ruffier by surprise as he virtually watched it in.

The second, two minutes later, was a Targett cut back to James Ward-Prowse, who marked his first appearance of pre-season with a tidy side footed finish from ten yards.

Ward-Prowse turned provider four minutes from time as his corner was powered in by the head of Maya Yoshida from the edge of the six yard box.

Saints are returning home straight after the game and are due to report back to Staplewood at the start of next week to prepare for their final two pre-season games against Augsburg and Sevilla.

Pellegrino: That was a good end to our time here

Show/hide article…

Second-half goals from Manolo Gabbiadini, James Ward-Prowse and Maya Yoshida sealed the 3-0 victory, which was made difficult given the weather conditions in France.

“It is a really good end to our time here,” started Pellegrino.

“Today we played a tough game. It was very hot and at the beginning and that made it difficult, but we were increasing the level during the match and we finished well.

“Saint-Étienne were, little by little, decreasing their level as the game went on, but we were getting better and that was the difference today.”

Saints will now return to England to face FC Augsburg and Sevilla at St Mary’s in their final two pre-season friendlies next week.

And despite the impressive display in France, Pellegrino stressed that his side must continue to improve as they approach the final run in to the season.

“The important thing is that everybody is physically in a good way,” started the Saints boss.

“The players that came back this week have all – apart from Nathan [Redmond] - played some minutes and hopefully now everyone can be better every single game.

“We don’t have too much time. In 14 days we have our first Premier League game and our goal is to be ready for that game.”

THE VERDICT: Goals key for positive Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Goals, or rather the lack of them, contributed hugely to the demise of Claude Puel, but new Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino looks like he has no intention of following the same path.

For all the chatter that surrounded Saints’ first win of pre-season against St Etienne in Chambery, and Pellegrino’s first as the club’s manager, there was one stand-out factor.

Pellegrino found a way to get Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini into the same team.

There has already been debate as to exactly how effective it was or wasn’t, but given it is very early days it is impossible to draw too many conclusions.

The more important thing to note is that Pellegrino did it. It’s a sign of a more attacking and adventurous style, and that he perhaps is conscious that for all of Saints’ strengths, they lack goals from other areas of the field.

They really have two guys in the squad that they can rely upon to get on the scoresheet.

Gabbiadini can be streaky but when he’s on a roll we know what he can do. Austin scores for fun when he’s fit.

You can, therefore, fully understand Pellegrino’s logic and his desire to find a way to name them in the same side.

He clearly wants to play with a 4-2-3-1 formation, which poses an obvious problem. There is only room for one out-and-out striker.

The 4-4-2 has gone out of fashion for the time being, and so it was that one of the duo would play as the main striker, with the other in the number ten type of role just off of them.

Pellegrino must have thought long and hard about the right way to play that combination.

Austin is not known as a creative force from deep but as a goalscorer at his most effective when he is in and around the box with decent delivery into him.

Gabbiadini has played the number ten position in Italy, and to good effect by all accounts.

However, as a striker he offers you a bit of pace and the opportunity of getting in behind a little more often.

That obviously proved to be the clincher for Pellegrino, who cast Gabbiadini as the lead striker, with Austin in behind him.

It certainly provided food for thought.

On the positive side, the pair did manage to make their positions fairly fluid. Gabbiadini would drop deep and Austin play further up. At times they almost became a pair.

If you were being critical at this very early stage you could say it didn’t really make use of Austin’s prowess as a finisher.

Whatever, both of them played well against St Etienne, and more intriguing, encouraging even, than how it went on day one is that Pellegrino is thinking so positively about his team, that he is making goals a priority.

There was also evidence of progress from the previous two pre-season matches, not just in the result but the style of play, as Saints pressed higher up the pitch.

St Etienne are only a week away from the start of their Ligue 1 campaign, and though they fielded a mix and match side, they were strong enough opposition.

The first half was a fairly dull affair until the final ten minutes.

Kevin Monnet-Paquet started the action with a shot into the side netting before Gabbiadini had a hat-trick of chances.

He missed a golden opportunity when he put wide sliding in just a couple of yards out intercepting Loic Perrin’s truly awful pass across his own six yard box.

The Italian also fired over from just inside the area and forced Stephane Ruffier into a good save down to his left moments later.

Saints were much more dominant in the second half.

They got a couple of early let-offs as Jonathan Bamba’s deflected shot struck the post, while a weak header from Kenny Rocha Santos made life much easier for half time sub Stuart Taylor than it ought to have been.

But after that Saints never looked back.

Ruffier made a good save with his legs from Sofiane Boufal’s diving header before Saints bagged two goals in two minutes.

Matt Targett, a second half replacement for Ryan Bertrand, supplied them both with crosses from the left.

Gabbiadini’s header for the first on 64 minutes must have taken Ruffier by surprise. It did come quickly but the keeper stood and watched it in despite it being fairly close to him.

Ward-Prowse had only had his first seven minutes of pre-season action when he side footed home Saints’ second from ten yards out.

A little extra gloss was put on the scoreline four minutes from time as Ward-Prowse’s corner was met by a powerful header from Maya Yoshida.

It’s back to work again at Staplewood now for Saints ahead of their final two pre-season matches at home to Augsburg and Sevilla.

Despite all the talk surrounding Virgil van Dijk, Saints fans can take comfort from the news that their team is making progress and, after all the complaints surrounding negativity last season, Pellegrino certainly seems to be trying to be positive.

Abraham: Swansea on course for season opener

Show/hide article…

After scoring his second goal in three pre-season matches, striker Tammy Abraham says Swansea City are ready for their opening match of the Premier League season against Southampton.

Abraham scored the Swans’ opening goal in their 2-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday, and Abraham, who signed on loan from Chelsea this month, feels his new side are finding form in time for their first match of 2017/18 at St Mary’s Stadium on 12 August.

“We feel we are on course for Southampton,” Abraham told Swanseacity.com. "We know it’s getting closer and closer and we have to be ready.

“We have to show everyone what we are made of in the first game.”

Report: Saint-Étienne 0-3 Saints

Show/hide article…

Two second-half goals in two minutes from Manolo Gabbiadni and James Ward-Prowse gave Saints the lead they had deserved, before Yoshida then headed in five minutes from time to complete the 3-0 win.

Mauricio Pellegrino named a strong starting eleven to face the French side at the Stade Municipal de Chambéry, with Ryan Bertrand coming in at left-back to make his first start of pre-season.

Jérémy Píed lined up in the other full-back position, and it was the Frenchman that created Southampton’s first real change of the game. Bursting forward down the right flank he drove into the penalty area and struck at goal, only to be denied by Stéphane Ruffier in goal for the hosts.

The next chance fell rather fortuitously to Manolo Gabbiadini. The Italian latched onto a loose ball across the Saint-Étienne back line and stretched to provide a finishing touch, but the ball was just too far ahead of the striker.

Píed was continuing to wreak havoc down the right flank and almost helped to break the deadlock once again just before half time. Having dummied past his man from a short corner, the right back crossed for Maya Yoshida to head at goal, but the Saints captain saw his header flash wide of the near post.

Pellegrino made just one change at the interval, as Stuart Taylor replaced Fraser Forster in goal to make his Southampton debut.

And the veteran goalkeeper was called straight into action after Jonathan Bamba struck the foot of the post following a neat piece of interplay on the edge of the Saints penalty area.

At the other end, Sofiane Boufal came close with a diving header at the back post following a deep cross from Dušan Tadič, though he too was denied by Ruffier.

The opener then came after 64 minutes. Fresh from being introduced, Matt Targett drove down the left channel and crossed for Gabbiadini to head superbly into the top corner to give Saints the lead.

Just two minutes later the lead had been doubled. Once again Targett provided the cross into the area, but this time fellow substitute James Ward-Prowse was the man to provide the vital touch with a low finish into the back of the net.

At this point, Saints were really looking dominant and they eventually got a third before the full-time whistle.

Ward-Prowse followed the theme of scorer turning provider, as his out-swinging corner was headed in by Yoshida to seal a 3-0 victory and cap off an excellent week for Saints in France.
