Hampshire leap into top three after winning rain-affected T20 Blast game in Bristol

Show/hide article…

Michael Klinger’s seventh T20 century was not enough to save Gloucestershire from a 24-run Duckworth-Lewis defeat to Hampshire at soggy Bristol tonight

The experienced Australian carried his side’s innings of 174 for five in a match reduced to 19 overs per side, smashing six sixes and seven fours in a masterly demonstration of clean hitting that saw him finish unbeaten on 101.

Spinners Mason Crane (1-17 from three overs) and Liam Dawson (1-24 from four) fared best of the Hampshire attack.

In reply, the visitors raced to 121 for three off 11.4 overs, with openers James Vince (42) and Rilee Rossouw (46 not out) putting together a stand of 85 in eight overs.

However, the visitors only needed to be on 97 under DLS when heavy rain put an end to proceedings - meaning Hampshire leapfrog their opponents in the tightly congested NatWest T20 Blast South Group.

Hampshire started the game third bottom in their nine team group, but ended it third top.

Klinger needed one moment of good fortune after losing the toss. Having made only a single, he skied a miscued shot to deep cover where the ball fell inches short of the onrushing Michael Carberry.

Hampshire’s bowlers did well in the six-over powerplay, which ended with the hosts 38 for one.

Phil Mustard fell to Reece Topley for three, while Dawson - back in Hampshire colours after being left out of the third Test by England at The Oval - had the distinction of bowling a maiden to Klinger.

When Ian Cockbain and Kieran Noema-Barnett departed cheaply in quick succession, the visitors looked to be taking control. But former Hampshire batsman Benny Howell (25) helped Klinger add 54 for the fourth wicket before Crane removed him and Jack Taylor in the 15th over.

Klinger, who had gone to his half-century off 37 balls, was by then in full flow. The 18th over, bowled by Chris Wood, saw him clear the ropes twice, including a massive six over midwicket off a no-ball full-toss and Thisara Perera (26 not out) added another maximum in an over which cost 31.

When Klinger reached his ton in the final over with another superb six over extra cover off Gareth Berg, his second 50 had occupied just 21 deliveries.

Hampshire’s reply looked to have stuttered when Vince was caught by Jack Taylor at deep-square off a short Matt Taylor delivery in the third over but umpire Billy Taylor - the former Hampshire seam bowler - was signalling a no-ball for height.

That was all the encouragement Vince and Rossouw needed to get ahead of the required rate on Duckworth-Lewis, with more rain threatening.

By the end of the powerplay the total read 59 without loss and by the time Vince got an inside edge off Perera to be caught behind, having faced 30 balls, the rain was getting heavy.

Carberry, batting with a runner and a pronounced limp, lofted Noema-Barnett over long-on for another maximum and repeated the dose off Tom Smith as Hampshire stayed comfortably ahead of the required rate.

Matt Taylor gave Gloucestershire hope by pinning Carberry lbw for 20 and then having George Bailey caught behind down the leg-side in the 11th over.

But by the next over the driving rain finally sent the players from the field. Hampshire were well in control, Rossouw, having faced 27 balls and hit four fours and two sixes.

Liverpool Transfer News: Keita off, Pellegrino’s Van Dijk talks, Randall exit confirmed

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have ended their chase for RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita.

According to Sky Sports, the Reds dropped their interest - for the time being - when their second bid was rejected two weeks ago.

Anfield chiefs will revive their bid to sign Keita if the Bundesliga club decide to cash in.

But that appears unlikely to happen, with Leipzig bosses standing firm all summer.

Keita, who joined Leipzig last summer, scored eight goals in 31 appearances last season.

The Guinea international is under contract until 2020.

McMenemy backs Les Reed’s Van Dijk stance

Show/hide article…

WILL he or won’t he? That’s the question that supporters are asking, not just me as I don’t know the answer, but the club in general.

It of course surrounds Mr Van Dijk, and will he stay or go, probably to Liverpool?

This time last year it wouldn’t have even entered anyone’s mind, simply because it was announced by the club, and applauded all round, that they had awarded the player a six-year contract.

Half way through last season he was injured and it enabled a young player, Jack Stephens, to break into the ranks, and he took on the role exceptionally well and saw us through until the end of the season.

Then of course during that period it came out loud and clear that Liverpool not only admired van Dijk but wanted to sign him.

It was so out of order the way it happened that Southampton complained and Liverpool had to put their hands up, apologise, and say they were no longer interested.

However, that was a month or two ago, and the ball is now in the player’s court, along with his agent of course, who not content with the six-year contract would appear to be encouraging his player to move on again because, guess what, he will get another payment.

Apart from the Southampton situation, I never cease to be amazed when every morning I click on teletext on the television – yes, I am getting very professional at this sort of thing nowadays – and work out which player at which club is connected with a move.

I know as ever a lot of it is guesswork, but Mr Koeman, has a particular fancy apparently for the Swansea midfield player Sigurdsson.

Fair enough, the club have made some sort of offer, which has been turned down, but even before that he made it clear he would like that player.

He has been joined in that respect by Antonio Conte at Chelsea saying that one player he would like to sign is Harry Kane from Tottenham.

Whilst supporters, as ours did, might laugh at these suggestions because they know players are on long contracts, there are other sides to it which, in my opinion are totally wrong.

Ok, we can’t stop people being tapped up as they say because agents have contacts and also players at another club would know the player and could be letting him know that the manager is interested.

Not for one minute am I saying players have got involved in the van Dijk situation, but nearly half their team used to be at St Mary’s.

The whole thing about team spirit and team effort is everybody pulling together.

I have said before at one time the squads were much smaller. It was a tight knit group of possibly 13, 14 or 15 first team players, with the rest being youngsters or reserves, hoping at some stage to break in.

This week, for instance, I notice that one squad was going abroad with 30 players in their squad.

The manager and his staff have a harder job usually, but it is not made easier with so many players to manage who possibly think they should be in the side.

Therefore you can do without another added problem with a player wanting to leave and a manager stating he wants to buy him, when his own club, as we have said he’s not for sale – and well done to Les Reed and company for strongly saying he is our player, we were happy to give him a long contract, he was happy to sign it at the time, and we do not need to sell.

The result is the manager has had to make a decision.

Don’t forget he has just arrived and is having to win over the whole dressing room, and has left the one that wants to get away back home running around on his own.

It is not a good start for anybody, particularly when the player involved was probably admired for his ability by all the other players, and playing in a position of centre half where you normally need a leader, and one who can represent the manager more on the field than the rest of the others.

To come out at this stage is totally out of order.

Who can say what will happen? The season is coming on us very soon. If he is going to stay here he needs to be playing as quickly as possible and the manager needs to know where he stands with team selection with only a couple of games left before the big ones start.

The dressing room needs to be positive and as happy as possible, or will it be that van Dijk remains determined to leave?

I for one would probably say if the choice is between him sitting at the back of the stand for the next five seasons or to say publically we have done everything we could, and the player and his agent are not changing, it’s a phone call to Liverpool and asking for £70m, or whatever price Les thinks, and tell them to take it or leave it.

Then the supporters will realise the club have done everything possible to keep him.

You could then ask Jack Stephens to carry on where he left off and the fans would be ready to boo a certain individual when the Liverpool fixture comes up.

Pellegrino gets a full look at his attacking options

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino will for the first time be able to survey his full Saints attacking arsenal in this evening’s pre-season friendly against French outfit St Etienne.

With James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond both returning for this week’s training camp in France, Pellegrino has been able to really analyse his options going forward, and will now get to see that in a match situation.

The Argentine has already seen how effective Charlie Austin is, after he netted a brace against Brentford in pre-season, and will be eager to get a first-hand look at all his options as he works out how to construct his attacking line next term.

Ward-Prowse and Redmond, who both usually operate in the three behind the main striker, came back for this week’s trip away after a break following their involvement in the European Under-21 Championships with England.

Pellegrino will be experimenting again against St Etienne and has that pair as well as Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini, Dusan Tadic, Sam Gallagher, Shane Long and Sofiane Boufal to pick from.

Ryan Bertrand, meanwhile, could be set for his first appearance of pre-season, having been an unused substitute in last weekend’s draw at Brentford having previously sat out of the St Gallen 0-0 with a minor hamstring problem. Both Sam McQueen and Matt Targett have played at left-back so far in his absence.

The England international has been in full training in France and Pellegrino will be keen to start getting him game time ahead of the new Premier League season which kicks off a fortnight today.

As has been well reported, Virgil van Dijk did not travel to France and is back at Staplewood training alone.

He will therefore not be involved against St Etienne, who Saints play at a small ground near their training camp in Evian at the Stade Municipal de Chambery (5.30pm BST kick off).

Jeremy Pied is likely to get another run out at right-back with usual first choice Cedric Soares yet to return to the fold follow his participation at the Confederations Cup with Portugal.

WHERE DO THEY PLAY?

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard has been AS Saint-Étienne’s home since 1931 and was named after the founder of Groupe Casino, Geoffroy Guichard, who purchased the site for the 41,965 all-seater stadium.

This pre-season tie will, however, take place approximately 150km east of their home stadium at Stade Muncipal De Chambéry.

HOW DID THEY DO LAST SEASON?

Saint-Étienne finished eighth in Ligue One last season – nine points short of Bordeaux who took the final Europa League qualification place.

WHO IS THEIR MANAGER?

Oscar Garcia was appointed the club’s new boss this summer, after long-term boss Christophe Galtier stepped down at the end of last season.

The former Barcelona player moved into management with the youth sides of Catalonia and Barcelona before managing Maccabi Tel Aviv, Brighton & Hove Albion, Watford and Red Bull Salzburg.

WHO ARE THE PLAYERS TO LOOK OUT FOR?

Romain Hamouma was the club’s top scorer last term, with a modest eight goals throughout the campaign.

The 30-year-old has been with Saint-Étienne since 2012 and has netted 42 times since he made the switch from Caen.

DID YOU KNOW?

Saint-Étienne have won the Ligue 1 title a record ten times, with most of their success coming during the 1970s. They have also won six Coupe de France titles, a Coupe de la Ligue title and five Trophée de Champions.
