Saints give free tickets to refugees

Show/hide article…

Saints joined up with the CLEAR project, which offers advice, information and guidance on employment for refugees and asylum seekers, to distribute free tickets for the game.

Football Welcomes was a weekend of action that marked the 80th anniversary of the arrival in the UK of some of the first refugees to play professional football here. They were child refugees from the Spanish Civil War, who were evacuated to the UK after the bombing of Guernica on 26th April 1937.

Three Spanish Civil War refugee footballers played for Saints – Sabin Barinaga (1938-39), Raimundo Perez Lezama (1939-40) and Jose Gallego (1948-50).

Supported by a range of Premier League clubs, the Football League and the FA Women’s Super League, Football Welcomes also highlighted the important role clubs can play in promoting community cohesion.

The initiative was part of Amnesty International’s ‘I Welcome’ campaign for a better international response to the global refugee crisis. The campaign encourages local communities to work together to create a more welcoming environment for people fleeing conflict and persecution.

Vokins and England Under-17s win Euros opener

Show/hide article…

The Three Lions fell behind early on in Croatia after captain Marc Guehi directed the ball into his own net after just eight minutes.

But Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster responded immediately to level from close range after Jadon Sancho rounded the goalkeeper and squared following a superb run from inside his own half.

Brewster then fired in from inside the penalty area on 35 minutes to double his personal tally and put England ahead at the break.

Manchester City’s Phil Foden then confirmed the victory on 78 minutes when he side-stepped into the penalty area and saw his deflected shot nestle in the far corner.

England are next in action on Sunday 7th of May when they face Ukraine in their second Group D game.

Jurgen Klopp handed massive injury boost

Show/hide article…

Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho is confident he will be fit to face Southampton on Sunday.

The Brazil international was forced off with a dead leg just 13 minutes into Monday’s win at Watford.

It is understood he returned to light training away from the main squad on Thursday as the club’s medical staff continue to manage his fitness in order to maximise his chances of being fit for the weekend.

“The injury is much better. It was a hard tackle and what happened was a dead leg. It caused a lot of pain in the area I was hit, but the pain has reduced now,” Coutinho told liverpoolfc.com.

"At the moment, I am feeling very well - the first couple of days were the most painful.

"Of course, when you have to come out of such an important game like this one, and when you leave that early, it frustrates you, but thanks to God it was nothing major - just a strong tackle.

"It was nothing too serious and the main thing was we won the game and we left the match very pleased and happy because the result was very good for us.

“The main thing was for us to come home with the three points.”

Liverpool FC news: Philippe Coutinho confident he will be fit to face Southampton

Liverpool managing Philippe Coutinho fitness ahead of Southampton - source

Show/hide article…

Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho is having his fitness managed to maximise his chances of being able to play against Southampton on Sunday, sources have told ESPN FC.

Coutinho, 24, was forced off early in Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Watford on Monday night after suffering a “dead leg.”

The Brazil international was absent from team training at Melwood on Thursday afternoon, but sources say he took part in a light session as he recovers from the knock.

Coutinho downplayed the injury after the Watford victory, saying it was not “serious,” while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hoped for a swift recovery.

In an interview published on the club’s official website, Coutinho says he is hopeful that he can play in Sunday’s game against Southampton.

“The injury is much better,” he said. "It was a hard tackle and what happened was a dead leg. It caused a lot of pain in the area I was hit, but the pain has reduced now.

"At the moment, I am feeling very well – the first couple of days were the most painful.

“When you have to come out of such an important [game] like this one, and when you leave that early, it frustrates you. But thanks to God it was nothing major – just a strong tackle.”

Liverpool hope to have Coutinho fit and available at Anfield on Sunday as they look to keep their Champions League qualification hopes on course.

Sims: We know what we have to do

Show/hide article…

Victory over City in the final game of the season would ensure Saints maintain their Premier League 2 status, and Sims is keen to see that happen.

“It’s a massive game for us,” explained the 20-year-old.

“We all know what we have to do and I think we are capable of winning – we have to. We’ve had some good sessions and will go into it full of confidence.

“It will be a tough game but I am sure that everyone is up for it and ready. We have to do what we have to do and then not worry about other results.”

Saints head to Manchester off the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Derby County in their most recent league encounter.

Though Sims is confident they will be able to pick up three points against the Citizens.

“We’ve played well in the past few games,” he continued.

“It has just been disappointing how we have finished them - we just haven’t been able to finish it off and that’s what we need to work on.

“Martin [Hunter] has stressed the importance of this game to us and we are all completely focussed now on going there and getting a result.”
