Kurt Zouma available for loan next season, as Chelsea plan for arrival of Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Chelsea plan to loan out Kurt Zouma as part of a defensive reshuffle that they hope will see Virgil van Dijk join the club in the summer.

Head coach Antonio Conte wants to make changes to his defensive options for next season, despite the fact Chelsea are on course for a Premier League and FA Cup double.

Southampton may yet play hardball over the fee for £50million-rated Van Dijk, who has also interested Arsenal and Liverpool, but Chelsea are confident an agreement will be reached.

With Andreas Christensen returning from a two-year loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, Chelsea need to make space in their squad for Van Dijk. Captain John Terry will leave at the end of the season and Chelsea believe Zouma is the most suitable defender to send out on loan.

The Frenchman missed almost a year after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury last February and has made 11 first-team appearances this season.

Stat Pack: Liverpool vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp hasn’t won any of his three previous Premier League games against Southampton (D2 L1). Liverpool had won their previous three v Saints prior to his arrival.

Southampton have won just one of their last five visits to Anfield in the Premier League (D1 L3), 1-0 in September 2013 with a goal from current Liverpool player Dejan Lovren.

Liverpool are yet to score against Southampton in three games this season - drawing 0-0 in the Premier League in November and losing both League Cup semi-final legs 1-0.

Jurgen Klopp now has an identical record to Brendan Rodgers in his first 65 Premier League games in charge of Liverpool: W33 D18 L14, winning 117 points.

Since Klopp first took charge of Liverpool in October 2015, there have been 208 goals scored in Premier League games involving the Reds – more than any other side.

Even if Southampton win their remaining five Premier League matches this season, they’ll still fall under their league points tally in 2015-16 (63) and 2014-15 (60) and would only be able to equal their tally in 2013-14 (56).

Manolo Gabbiadini scored four goals in his first three Premier League appearances (248 mins), but since then he’s failed to score and attempted just one shot on target in 237 Premier League minutes (four apps).

Seven of Southampton’s 11 Premier League wins in 2016-17 have come on a Sunday. In fact, only Manchester United (8) and Tottenham (8) have won more games played on a Sunday in the Premier League this season than Claude Puel’s side.

Premier League ‘not easier than Serie A but definitely more fun’

Show/hide article…

Southampton forward Manolo Gabbiadini has claimed the Premier League is not easier than Serie A – but definitely more fun for forwards.

The Italian moved to England from Napoli in January for £17million. He scored four goals in his first seven league appearances for Claude Puel’s side.

And though Gabbiadini says defenders in the Premier League have it harder than their counterparts in Italy, the 25-year-old says it’s more enjoyable to be a striker in England than in Serie A.

‘In Italy it’s more tiring because the defenders are all back there, so you have to stay calm as you move the ball around and wait for someone to make a mistake,’ he told FourFourTwo.

‘As an attacker, I would say you enjoy yourself more in England. The defenders enjoy themselves less! They often find themselves in a two-against-two situation, two-against-three. I have to say, for a defender, the Premier League is harder. For an attacker, I wouldn’t say it’s easier, but it’s definitely more fun.’

Gabbiadini made a flying start to life in England – netting six goals in his first four appearances, including a brace in the EFL cup final against Manchester United.

The forward has not scored in two months, however, having only recently returned from a groin injury that kept him out for three matches.

And Gabbiadini admits even he was taken aback by how quickly he found his scoring form after moving to the Premier League.

‘I came here with a desire to do the best I could, but I’ll be honest, not even I believed I could score six times in four matches,’ he said.

‘When you change team, change team-mates and change country, you change the way you play. It’s a different kind of football, but I didn’t think I could adjust this easily.’

Jurgen Klopp to make room for £50m Virgil van Dijk by selling this Liverpool defender

Show/hide article…

The charismatic German look set to add Virgil van Dijk to his ranks if Liverpool secure Champions League football .

Jurgen Klopp needs to strengthen his defensive options this summer.

The Liverpool Echo claim the Championship outfit are frontrunners for his signature.

WHICH Premier League defenders are the highest-paid in the division?

And the Reds could free up space in the squad by permanently offloading £4m-rated Wisdom.

The talented centre-back has spent the season on loan at Red Bull Salzburg.

The Austrian outfit are keen to make the move permanent.

But Wisdom, 23, would prefer a return to England.

Premier League table 2016/17: Every remaining fixture simulated 50,000 times to produce predicted final places

Show/hide article…

Chelsea may yet lose their position at the top of the Premier League table, although there is a very small chance of this happening, according to a prediction by the Financial Times.

Here’s how the numbers have been crunched in their Super Computer: ‘The FT’s model simulates the outcome of every remaining fixture, repeating the season 50,000 times to calculate the likelihood of each team finishing in a given position. Results are modelled based on teams’ underlying performance data.’

Scroll through the gallery to see clubs (arranged in current league positions) to see their chances of finishing in each league position.

Data comes from football-data.co.uk, Transfermarkt and FT analysis. Correct as of 1 May, 2017.
