MNF: Jamie Carragher and Alan Pardew discuss some high-profile penalty incidents from the weekend

Show/hide article…

Jamie Carragher and Alan Pardew discuss some high-profile penalty incidents from the weekend on Monday Night Football.

Swansea were punished by a harsh penalty in first-half injury time against Manchester United when Marcus Rashford latched onto Jesse Lingard’s through ball and nicked the ball past Fabianski as he dived at his feet, but the striker appeared to engineer contact and went down easily.

There was a similar incident in Middlesbrough’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City as Leroy Sane appeared to be already falling as he went down in the box under a challenge from Marten de Roon.

The last incident - described by Arsene Wenger as a “soft” penalty - came in the north London derby when Tottenham striker Harry Kane went down in the penalty area after contact from Gabriel.

Former Crystal Palace manager Pardew thinks it is time for video referees to be introduced.

"These incidents should be outlawed and the only way to outlaw them is to have video referees.

It’s a part of the game that we all want to see the back of and the only way to see the back of it is the referees calling it right every time and then they wouldn’t succumb to this diving."

He added: It’s a delicate area. I personally think, and Fifa are talking about doing it at the World Cup, if you have a video referee and he calls that dive correctly every time then I think it will come out of the game."

Watch Jamie Carragher and Alan Pardew debate diving on Monday Night Football by hitting play on the video at the top of the page.

Claude Puel’s Southampton future under threa

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is under mounting pressure at Southampton with his long term future uncertain.

The South Coast club take pride in making progress each season and are currently stuck in mid-table having finished sixth last year.

Puel also suffered an early exit from the Europa League and, despite reaching the League Cup final, there are some concerns as to whether the 55-year-old Frenchman can take the club forward.

Southampton are likely to face another battle to keep their best players with Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all looking at Virgil van Dijk.

Chelsea and Liverpool are also watching developments on Ryan Bertrand with the England left back likely to be interested in a move to a bigger club.

Portuguese right back Cedric Soares has also attracted interest from Barcelona among others.

Puel has done a steady job, brushing aside some early concerns and yet there are also suggestions in the French media that he could be on his way.

The club often do the recruiting and transfers and have a strong structure in place so if the manager does go then they have a succession plan in place.

Southampton will be determined to make a strong finish after a poor run and that could help determine Puel’s future.

Claude Puel’s Southampton future uncertain with club poised to review their options

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel faces an anxious wait over his Southampton future with the club set to consider their options at the end of the season.

Southampton handed Puel a three-year contract last year, but it is not yet certain that the Frenchman will remain in charge for next season.

With the club currently in ninth place in the Premier League table and in danger of finishing below South Coast rivals Bournemouth, Puel desperately needs a good finish to his first campaign.

The draw with Hull City did not help his chances of staying on, particularly as the St Mary’s crowd booed his substitutions.

Southampton have taken great pride in making progress in each season in recent years, regardless of managerial changes, but there is a fear they are heading in the wrong direction under Puel.

Claude Puel has fallen out with a number of players

A host of Saints stars including England duo Ryan Bertrand and Nathan Redmond have fallen out with their French boss after becoming disillusioned with his style of management.

England defender Bertrand is now ready to quit the club in the summer if Puel stays in charge.

There are also genuine fears that star defender Virgil van Dijk will leave if Puel doesn’t.

Senior players are understood to have voiced their concerns to director of football Les Reed following a series of rows between Puel and his players.

Puel has also told pals in France he is uncertain if he will stay beyond the end of the season with a club source saying “The next few weeks are critical to Puel.

Huge Chelsea transfer: Antonio Conte ready to sacrifice star to seal top target’s arrival

Show/hide article…

The Dutch defender, 25, has emerged as one of Antonio Conte’s top summer transfer targets. And The Sun claim the Blues boss is prepared to offer up a part-exchange deal to land him. The newspaper say Andreas Christensen will be packed off to St. Mary’s later this month.

“Chelsea are confident of sealing a part-exchange deal for Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk.” In return, with a reduction on his £50m valuation, Chelsea will receive Van Dijk. Christensen has impressed on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach over the past two seasons. But it seems Conte would rather strengthen his backline with a player proven in the Premier League. Chelsea are now apparently confident of securing Van Dijk’s services ahead of their rivals.

Starsport understands Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City are in the hunt for the former Celtic man as well. And Emirates chiefs were even willing to make him one of their top earners on more than £150,000 a week. Christensen, meanwhile, is believed to be interested in the idea of linking up with Southampton.

Chelsea are keen to sign Virgil van Dijk this summer

Chelsea are prepared to make a swap deal with Southampton to land Virgil van Dijk, according to reports.

The Sun claim Antonio Conte’s side are prepared to offload on-loan defender Andreas Christensen to Saints when he returns from a two-year loan at Borussia Monchengladbach this summer.

That will cut the price Chelsea will have to pay to land Dutch star Van Dijk.

Conte prefers the idea of playing the Saints star in his back line to Christensen as he has proven Premier League experience.

Scottish Gossip: Virgil van Dijk, Celtic, Fran Sandaza, Chris Millar

Show/hide article…

Celtic are poised for a £5.5m windfall as Chelsea are set to sign Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk from under Arsenal’s noses for a deal rising to £55m. Celtic inserted a sell-on clause when they sold Van Dijk to Southampton for £13m two years ago. (Sun)

Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic is a summer transfer target for clubs in Spain, Italy, Germany and England. La Liga duo Sevilla and Espanyol, former suitors Torino and wealthy Bundesliga club Red Bull Leipzig have recently sent scouts to watch the £9m-rated 22-year-old Croatian. (Daily Mail)

Inverness Caley Thistle will be free to make a permanent move for 22-year-old on-loan midfielder Billy King in the summer after he was told he will be let go by parent club Hearts in the summer. Former Scotland under-21 international King has spent the full season with Inverness on loan from the Jambos.(Press and Journal)

Former England and Arsenal defender Martin Keown calls on English football to follow the example of the game in Scotland where players subsequently judged to have dived to fool the referee are punished retrospectively, a system he calls “beautiful”. (Daily Mail)

Head coach Neil Lennon is trying to bring right-back Steven Whittaker back to Hibs as they prepare for life in the Premiership. Whittaker, 32, started his career with the Hibees before being sold to Rangers for £2m in 2007.(Sun)

Drew Roberton, the general secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association, is urging fans to give Pedro Caixinha more time to prove himself as manager of the Ibrox club following the painful back-to-back defeats to Celtic. (National)

Fran Sandaza is on the brink of running out at the Bernabeu and the Nou Camp next season as Girona edge ever closer to promotion to La Liga. The 32-year-old striker is still bitter that he was kicked out at Rangers four years by Charles Green after he revealed details of his contract in a prank phone call that was posted online. “I trusted them and they became the worst club I have ever played for in my career,” says Sandaza. "The treatment I received was terrible - and that was from everyone. Nobody connected with the club stuck up for me - not even Ally McCoist. (Herald)

Tommy Wright fears midfielder Chris Millar’s season is over just days after he signed a new deal at St Johnstone. Millar signed a one-year contract last week but limped off after just 35 minutes against Aberdeen. (Sun)

Aberdeen midfielder Graeme Shinnie has labelled his side’s trip to Hearts on Sunday as the most important game of the season. The Dons need one more win to finish in second place in the Premiership after missing the chance to move 12 points clear of Rangers when they lost 2-0 to St Johnstone at Pittodrie on Saturday.(Press and Journal)

Midfielder Arnaud Djoum is definite that he is staying at Hearts next season, despite the Jambos’ disappointing campaign. Djoum’s value rose when he helped Cameroon win the Africa Cup of Nations in February. He says: “I still have two years here so I’m focused 100 per cent on Hearts. I’ll be doing my best and hopefully next season we can have a better season.” (Edinburgh Evening News)

Stuart Armstrong is on Brighton manager Chris Hughton’s radar after his impressive displays in Celtic’s midfield this season.(Daily Record)

Former Rangers defender Hugh Burns criticises Mark Warburton for leaving successor Pedro Caixinha with a squad of underperforming players on long contracts. He believes the Portuguese has been left in a dreadful position by Warburton, his assistant David Weir and talent spotter Frank McParland. He asks: “We signed a player from Preston for almost £2m. Why weren’t Leeds or Sheffield United or other clubs interested in Joe Garner?” (Daily Record)

Glasgow Rocks captain Kieron Achara wants the club’s owners to move quickly to agree new deals with the core of this season’s squad to boost their hopes of a BBL title challenge next term. (Herald)
