Hull keeper Jakupovic ditched his preparation to save Saints pen

Show/hide article…

Faced with one of the biggest moments in his career, Eldin Jakupovic ditched his preparation and relied on gut instinct.

Hull’s 32-year-old goalkeeper had studied videos of Dusan Tadic’s penalties and practised saving them with goalkeeping coach Hugo Oliveira.

But when referee Mike Dean awarded Southampton a last-minute penalty, Jakupovic ignored it all, dived to his left and saved the spot-kick to keep Hull’s Premier League survival hopes alive.

‘I did my homework with my goalkeeper coach,’ Jakupovic said. ‘To be fair I saw his last four or five penalties and he never finished like that. It was always higher and more in the middle.

‘I had to make the decision and the decision was perfect; my feeling, my stomach told me to go this side (to his left). You have to be lucky as well, because it was a vey good penalty. It was a mix of luck with feelings and finally we took the point.’

Losing would have been harsh on Hull; the tussle between Saints defender Maya Yoshida and Hull midfielder Alfred N’Diaye inside the area that Dean punished looked evenly contested and they deserved at least a point.

Jakupovic is Hull’s longest-serving player, having joined them in 2012, but he was either loaned out or second choice until Marco Silva arrived in January and made him No 1.

Hull’s manager explained why he opted for the Swiss ahead of David Marshall, who was preferred in the first half of the season.

‘It was a decision in a moment, when we had to make a decision,’ Silva said.

‘When he came, our first game was a cup game and we kept it the same way, we changed the keeper, played Eldin and he had a good performance, and we decided to keep the same goalkeeper for the moment.

‘David is a fantastic professional, very good goalkeeper, works very hard and helps a lot all the boys and Eldin as well. He has kept the focus in his work. Obviously I am happy with the performance of Eldin.’

That save alone has repaid the manager’s faith. Was it the most important spot kick save of his life?

Jakupovic pondered for a moment, replying: ‘Oh man! I’ve saved a lot of penalties in my career but this is for sure one of the main penalties. It was last-minute. We need every single point.

Eldin Jakupovic says gut instinct sent him the right way for Dusan Tadic’s penalty

Show/hide article…

They still cannot win away from Humberside and their top-flight survival remains in the balance but when goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic plunged to his left to push Dusan Tadic’s 89th-minute penalty to safety nobody was denying that this tasted like victory of some magnitude for Hull City.

Jakupovic had grasped a precious lifeline for his struggling club, and as the away support celebrated ecstatically at the other end of the stadium, perhaps it marked a sea-change in Hull’s fortunes on their travels.

Hull have not won on the road since their opening assignment of the season at Swansea on Aug 20, and there is just one opportunity to rectify the issue, at Crystal Palace on Sunday week. After Swansea’s battling draw at Old Trafford yesterday, Hull may need more than just their formidable home form to survive.

Few would have complained had Saturday’s visit to St Mary’s yielded a breakthrough win. The hungrier and more adventurous side by some measure, Hull had several stand-out performers – composed central defender Harry Maguire, enterprising full-back Andrew Robertson and creative wideman Kamil Grosicki – in a compact team effort.

It all looked set to be undone when Alfred N’Diaye tangled with Southampton’s Maya Yoshida and referee Mike Dean, who dismissed a couple of Hull claims for a spot-kick, gave the penalty.

Last-gasp penalty save from Tadic one of the biggest of my life says Hull keeper

Show/hide article…

Hero keeper Eldin Jakupovic described his added-time penalty stop to save Hull from defeat at Southampton as one of best of his career.

The Swiss 32-year-old star denied Dusan Tadic to earn a point which lifted Marco Silva’s side three points clear of the relegation zone with four games to go [Swansea’s Sunday draw at Manchester United cut the gap back to two].

The save also meant fourth-bottom Hull could not be caught by Sunderland - who were therefore relegated.

Jakupovic said afterwards: “Oh man! I’ve saved a lot of penalties in my career but this is for sure one of the main penalties. It was last-minute. We need every single point.

“The gap is now three points. We have to watch ourselves, our performance. If we’re going to take points we’re going to stay in the league.

“We cannot now hope that another team’s going to help us. No. That’s the Premier League.

"We’re going to take this point to the next game against Sunderland and we’re going to try to continue our three points at home.”

The 6ft 3in stopper also paid tribute to goalkeeping coach Hugo Oliveira for helping him to do his homework on Tadic.

Asked if he’d watched the Serbian winger taking penalties before, Jakupovic - who saved low to his left - added: “Yes, before the game with my goalkeeper coach Hugo.

“To be fair I saw his four or five last penalties, and he never finished like that. It’s always higher and more in the middle.

“Finally, finally I had to make the decision. Today the decision was perfect, my feeling, my stomach told me to go this side, because he has to know.

"He didn’t have a good game, to be fair, Tadic — I [also] had before a save against him.”
