Southampton 0-0 Hull: Claude Puel calls for Saints improvement after draw

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel called for Southampton improvement after his side’s limp display in a 0-0 draw with Hull at Mary’s.

The hosts didn’t muster a single shot on target in the first half against the Premier League strugglers, and only two in the second, one of which was a late penalty, saved by Hull stopper Eldin Jakupovic.

That is now three league games without a win for the Saints, meaning they are in danger of a bottom-half finish this season, and Puel called on his players to turn their form around.

“It was not a good performance,” Puel told Sky Sports. "There was very little quality, rhythm, intensity. We were too slow to find the good situations.

"When we attacked, we were too slow. We could not find any intensity against aa good team with a good organisation and technical play, but for us, it was not enough. But we have to accept this.

"They played very well. They want to stay in the Premier League. It was a difficult game for us, and difficult game for them, and I think it is a good point for us.

Saints ineptitude seemed to irk fans on Saturday afternoon, with boos audible at the final whistle. Puel understands their concerns, but insisted he and the players are just as frustrated.

“The fans agree, the players agree and the staff agree: we need to put more into the match,” Puel added. “Today it was not enough and it is our responsibility.”

Southampton 0-0 Hull: Marco Silva believes win for hosts would have been unjust

Show/hide article…

Marco Silva believes if Dusan Tadic converted the late penalty in the 0-0 draw at Southampton, the result would not have been fair on Hull.

Hull looked like they had done enough to secure a crucial point in their quest for Premier League survival, but in stoppage time, Alfred N’Diaye bundled Maya Yoshida to the floor, giving Tadic the chance to snatch a last-gasp win for the home side.

However, the Serbia international was denied by a brilliant stop from Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic, preserving what could prove to be a crucial point, with the Tigers now three clear of the relegation zone. Had Tadic converted, Silva feels it would have been more than harsh on his side.

“If they scored it would have not been deserved,” Silva told Sky Sports. "My players told me that it was a penalty, but the referee did not give us one for a foul on Niasse.

"Today we showed again very good organisation, very good football, very, very good football, and we had our chances.

"It was a very good performance and a very good result, of course we wanted to win the game, but a draw is good.

"You don’t see many teams outplay Southampton at home but we were in command. I want us to create more chances, the final decision are not the best when we are through on goal, but we still had some chances.

"It is a very good point. We wanted to better our away form, and this will give the players confidence.

“I have seen how we play at home, and I want this team to play like that away from home, without fear, play football. Now we focus on the next game.”

Since Marco Silva was at Hull, the Tigers have won 21 points from 15 Premier League matches. The players celebrated the point at St Mary’s with real vigour, something Silva believes stems from a strong team spirit.

“It is important [team morale],” Silva added. "It is a good dressing room. They work hard and they believe we can stay up.

“We have changed many things in the club but I have to give congratulations for the players. I now they will fight again next week.”

Van Dijk race heats up as his advisors hold talks with Arsenal and Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Hot £50million target Virgil van Dijk will have his pick of at least three of the Premier League’s top six clubs, after his advisors spoke with Arsenal and Liverpool last week.

With Manchester City also firmly in the hunt, Southampton’s 25-year-old centre-half and captain seems certain to be able to choose between the Etihad Stadium, the Emirates or Anfield once the season is over.

Rival bosses Pep Guardiola, Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klopp all want the commanding Dutchman to bolster their defensive options for next season.

Although it seems Van Dijk’s first choice may be to team up with Guardiola, City’s Spanish super-coach also has Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci and Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Bilbao also on his radar.

Trying to spring Italian international Bonucci from Juve will be a tall order, but Laporte still remains an option after his return to fitness.

City were interested in the Frenchman last year, but the 22 year-old suffered an horrific double leg break playing in a Under-21 European Championship qualifier against Scotland.

Laporte has a £45million release clause in a contract which has two more years to run.

Watch Eldin Jakupovic save penalty to earn Hull vital point

Show/hide article…

In stoppage time, Southampton had the chance to snatch all three points against Hull, but Eldin Jakupovic saved Dusan Tadic’s penalty to preserve a point for the Tigers.

When Hull look back on the season, they may point to the defining moment when Jakupovic clawed out Tadic’s low penalty as the incident that was as crucial as any in securing their Premier League status for another season.

There is a long way to go, of course, and the 0-0 draw at Southampton means Hull are still only three points clear of the bottom three with three games to play, but their chances of survival have greatly improved as a result of Jakupovic’s brilliance.

After Alfred N’Diaye had clumsily bundled Maya Yoshida to the floor, Tadic put the ball down on the spot, confidently strode up to take the penalty, and hit in firmly towards the bottom corner. Jakupovic did the rest.

EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal and Man City lead the race for £50m Premier League star

Show/hide article…

It is Arsene Wenger versus Pep Guardiola in the battle of the bosses for one of the most-wanted players in the country. And Starsport can reveal today that representatives of the Dutch defender have been in talks with both clubs. Liverpool and Everton have also shown strong interest in making a move for Van Dijk, 25.

Even Premier League leaders Chelsea have been linked with the Saints star. But Arsenal and City are currently disputing pole position for the former Celtic man. Van Dijk is not expected to play again this season, due to a foot injury. But he will be fit for August and it is expected that he has already played his last match for Southampton.

His transfer is set to be one of the most hotly contested of the summer window. And with City looking for a long-term replacement for Vincent Kompany to partner John Stones, it is no surprise Guardiola is in the frame, especially as Van Dijk is very comfortable on the ball. Van Dijk signed a five-year contract when he moved to Southampton from Celtic last year for £13m. That means Southampton can afford to hold out for a substantial fee but that is not thought to be an issue for Guardiola or Arsenal boss Wenger who both have cash to spend to revamp their squads for next season.

Clean sheet some solace for Puel

Show/hide article…

While Saints were unable to create anywhere near as much as they would have liked going forward, they did at least keep the Tigers at bay at St Mary’s.

Having conceded three against Manchester City and then four at Chelsea in their previous two matches, Puel was much happier with the efforts at the back.

“It’s a good thing, of course, because after taking seven goals in two games it was important to have a clean sheet,” said the Southampton manager.

“It was important to recover the ball, because Hull are an interesting team up front. This was ok, but when we had the ball it was not enough. It’s important to correct this, of course, for the next games.”

On the horizon now is a trip to Liverpool next Sunday, and Puel is expecting a different performance there.

“We are angry about our game – the staff, the players and the fans,” he said. "It’s important to give another picture of our play.

"We were not happy after the game of Chelsea, but that was a good game, with quality on the pitch, against a strong team.

“It was very interesting and it was important to correct the details and to defend better in different situations. We found this today, but we lost the quality to attack.”
