LAWRIE: Claude and Koeman need to prove doubters wrong

Show/hide article…

Previously we would have seen Christmas and the New Year out before any focus was on managers and their job security, because by then a good half of the season would have been completed.

The league table would therefore have given a fair picture as to which teams were struggling, but of course this year, amazingly, we saw Frank De Boer sacked after only four games, and now Ronald Koeman after nine.

As I mentioned a while ago, the Reading manager, another famous Dutch player, has also been under pressure.

Forgetting their nationality and generalising, is it right for managers to be finished so early?

Take one of the bookmaker’s favourites to be the next to go, Slaven Bilic, who is not Dutch but has been top of the list for a few weeks now.

He took his team to Wembley, they were 2-0 down at half time to Tottenham, but presumably as a result of his team talk his side came out transformed, won 3-2 and sent the fans home happy.

I suppose this has probably given him more time, and he will have to maintain these results, but that is what management is all about.

You get times when a team plays well but loses, and other times they play not so well and win.

An example, whether anyone agrees with me or not, is Saints’ last game against West Bromwich.

Quite honestly, because of the defensive manner Tony Pulis brought to St Mary’s, the odds were for a boring 0-0 draw, but then a substitution changed everything with a magnificent goal. However, it could easily have been the other way on.

In defence of managers I think that September or October is far too early to make major decisions and Saints fans in particular will be very surprised at the departure of Mr Koeman.

Having had to take over from a successful and popular manager in Mauricio Pochettino, not only did he have to win the fans over but regroup, bringing in new players.

He actually took us to seventh and then sixth position, and of course because of his success he was wanted elsewhere and made the decision to go off to Everton.

The surprise to me is that Everton traditionally under the chairmanship of Mr Bill Kenwright have always been one of the clubs you would look at who would give people more time and loyalty was always a word you would use in conjunction with them.

So what is the reason for these changes?

From a distance I can only conclude the advent of the Premier League and the massive amounts of money rolling in making it more of a business than the old fashion game it used to be.

Also we no longer have the olde worlde type of director who possibly had a business in the area and looked on their role as representing the man on the terrace.

Nowadays it is normally someone who has made lots of money in another country in a business not connected with sport, sees this as an opportunity to increase their income and moves in with little knowledge of the game itself and looks at the league table like a balance sheet.

Thinking about it, it’s not just the foreign coaches coming in who need time to adjust to our different atmosphere, surely it has to be the owners as well.

Another example connected to Saints is the appointment of Mr Claude Puel at Leicester.

I was with Matt Le Tissier at a charity event this week and I told him I had heard his comment when contacted by a radio programme where he had said Saints finished eighth and were unlucky not to win the League Cup at Wembley but the football was not attractive, in fact it could be described as dull and negative, and the supporters were not happy.

So a few eyebrows were lifted when Leicester City, having already finished two managers recently, and having been linked with the usual names - Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe etc – brought in Mr Puel describing him as the ideal appointment.

I suppose this could be scoffed at by our supporters as they get together, but it will be very interesting to see if in fact Mr Puel has learned from not exactly mistakes but more about the English game.

The reason he was appointed at Southampton was that in the previous 20 years he had had success in France, including getting to the Champions League semi-final.

Knowing football people as I do he will be doubly determined to prove people down in this part of the country wrong.

One of his other criticisms over not speaking English and that will have changed as well - he will have certainly learned a few new words from standing on the touchline and had quite a few chats with his bank manager after he left St Mary’s.

Seriously, it will be interesting to see what difference there will be in him at Leicester, and also where Ronald Koeman turns up next after undoubtedly licking his wounds.

This is all taking place for the exhibition about the history of the club which is going to be at the SeaCity Museum next year.

Anyone interested has one more week to get their entries in, and all the details are available on the club’s website, via this link > >

My problem of course is nominating my team, which I should have ready for next week’s column.

Match Preview: Brighton vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Get set for our Premier League visit to the Amex Stadium, where Saints will do battle with Brighton for the first time since 2012.

THE MATCH

Brighton and Hove Albion vs Southampton

Sunday 29th October, 1.30pm BST

Amex Stadium

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

The Seagulls will be looking to build on their most comprehensive Premier League victory to date, after defeating West Ham 3-0 at the London Stadium last weekend, while Saints are equally eyeing back-to-back wins after edging past West Brom at St Mary’s.

Brighton are unbeaten in three home league matches, but Saints have a strong record away from home, having only conceded twice on foreign soil this term.

A win has the potential to send Mauricio Pellegrino’s side as high as seventh, while the hosts would leapfrog Saints in the standings if they were to secure victory.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Mauricio Pellegrino will be without Mario Lemina after he suffered an ankle injury in training. That aside, Saints have a clean bill of health for the trip to the Amex Stadium.

Brighton: Steve Sidwell is the only definite absentee for the Seagulls as he continues to nurse a back problem.

Israeli international Tomer Hemed is once again available after his recent suspension for a violent conduct charge.

FORM GUIDE

Southampton’s previous five:

Brighton’s previous five:

West Ham (a) W 3-0

Everton (h) D 1-1

Arsenal (a) L 2-0

Newcastle United (h) W 1-0

AFC Bournemouth (a) L 1-0 (Carabao Cup)

TOP PERFORMERS

Manolo Gabbiadini has been Saints’ most potent threat in front of goal, finding the net three times.

Meanwhile, Sofiane Boufal’s sensational solo effort seven days ago may have fired him in to the manager’s eye-line, after his 85th minute contribution won all three points against West Brom last time out.

Top scorers: Manolo Gabbiadini (3), Sofiane Boufal (1), Steven Davis (1), Charlie Austin (1), Maya Yoshida (1)

Most assists: Nathan Redmond (2), Shane Long (1)

Pascal Groß has been involved in six of Brighton’s nine league goals this season (two goals, four assists).

Premier League tracking data shows the industrious forward has covered an average of 12.6km per 90 minutes this season - a record only eclipsed by James Milner.

Groß was creator of the most chances in the Bundesliga at former club Ingolstadt last season. For context, his total of 98 was only bettered by Christian Eriksen, Kevin de Bruyne and Mesut Ozil in the English top-flight.

DID YOU KNOW?

Southampton have been victorious in five of their last seven competitive away trips to Brighton & Hove Albion (D1 L1).

Pascal Groß has been involved in six of Brighton’s nine Premier League goals this season (two goals, four assists).

Opposition View: Brighton

Show/hide article…

Brighton boss Chris Hughton had nothing but praise for Saints in his pre-match press conference, describing Sunday’s visitors to the Amex Stadium as “a great example” to other sides in the Premier League.

The Seagulls sit just one point behind Mauricio Pellegrino’s men going into this weekend’s meeting between the top-flight’s two south-coast representatives and Hughton has warned his team that they will need to at their very best to defeat a wonderfully gifted Southampton.

“We will need to be strong at both ends,” Hughton said. “Saints are a very good side; they are expansive and play the game with a distinct style. I don’t expect them to deviate from that on Sunday.

But it is not just on the field that Hughton has been impressed with the St Mary’s club in recent seasons.

“With the progress they have made, they set a great example for other sides in the Premier League. They have the right balance between bringing young players through and remaining consistently in the top 10.

“I don’t think many clubs have been better managed than Saints in that respect over the past few years."

As a result, the 58-year-old has called on his charges to deliver a repeat of the performance that saw them put three goals past West Ham at the London Stadium last time out.

“It’s my responsibility to make sure that we are level-headed going into every game,” he concluded. "If our level of performance is as it was at West Ham, we have a great chance of winning on Sunday.”

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton ‘are looking for an identity’

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted his side are still searching for their identity.

The Saints chase back-to-back wins for the first time this season at south-coast rivals Brighton on Sunday and the former Alaves boss told a press conference he needs more time.

‘We are looking for an identity,’ said the Argentinian, who was installed as Claude Puel’s replacement in June.

'We have played nine games in the Premier League. It’s not too much when you think about the evolution of the team.

'In modern football, nine games, you can write a lot of history about that, but nine games in the history of the club is nothing.

‘To build a connection between the players, this is nothing. We are changing in two or three different ways and we are changing players because we want to see how they feel in different situations.’

The Saints, who lost 3-0 on their last trip to the Amex Stadium at the start of 2012, will be without club-record signing Mario Lemina due to an ankle injury sustained in training.

The former Juventus midfielder has been in fine form for his new club and will take some replacing.

‘He’s the type of player, and I’ve said this before, that we didn’t have in the squad and this is the reason we bought him,’ Pellegrino said.

'But I think we’ve got players to replace him. Players with quality and most of them are ready to play, maybe in a different way because Mario is a guy that can cover a lot of distance.

‘Our transition I think has improved a lot with Mario on the pitch, but every single player has different qualities.’

One player hoping to make a rare start in Lemina’s absence is Sofiane Boufal, whose stunning solo goal after stepping off the bench last week clinched his side a 1-0 home win against West Brom.

Pellegrino said his side will have to be at their best against Brighton, who have registered three Premier League wins since promotion in May.

‘It will be a difficult game,’ he added. 'Really tough because they have been working for a long period of time with the same manager, the same ideas.

'They’ve got clear ideas and are really tough in set-plays. On the counter-attack they are dangerous and I think we need a really good performance to take something positive.

'For me, the three teams coming from the Championship, I’m really surprised. Huddersfield, Newcastle and Brighton, they’re doing really well.

‘I’ve never seen something like that from the beginning, all three (promoted) teams playing really well, winning games and being very competitive from the beginning.’

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton still looking for an identity

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted his side are still searching for an identity.

Since the Argentine replaced Claude Puel in June, the Saints have won three Premier League games and are in mid-table ahead of Sunday’s visit to Brighton, live on Sky Sports.

Pellegrino said: "We are looking for an identity, we have played nine games in the Premier League. It’s not too much when you think about the evolution of the team.

"In modern football, nine games, you can write a lot of history about that, but nine games in the history of the club is nothing.

“Our transition I think has improved a lot with Mario on the pitch, but every single player has different qualities.”

Sofiane Boufal is one player who could benefit from Lemina’s absence after he came off the bench to score a spectacular winner against West Brom last weekend.

But Pellegrino knows the side will have to be at their best whoever he picks at the Amex Stadium.

“It will be a difficult game,” he said. "Really tough because they have been working for a long period of time with the same manager.

“They’ve got clear ideas and are really tough in set-plays. On the counter-attack they are dangerous and I think we need a really good performance to take something positive.”

Pellegrino: Our spirit will be key

Show/hide article…

The manager was delighted with the perseverance his side showed in finally breaking down a resolute West Brom defence at St Mary’s last time out.

Pellegrino believes this spirit will be key if Saints are to return home with a positive result from their first trip to the Amex Stadium in six seasons, where they will be backed by over 3,000 travelling fans.

“We have been working really well,” he said.

“We are scoring goals at the end of games, and we have to keep pushing for 90 minutes without losing control, even in the difficult moments.

“We have to know that we are really strong when we continue working with this spirit.”

Pellegrino admits he has been surprised by how well the three promoted teams have adapted to life in the Premier League.

Even sitting in a respectable 12th place at the start of the weekend, Brighton still find themselves below Newcastle (7th) and Huddersfield (11th), who they faced in the Championship last season.

“Brighton are a team with a good understanding, having been working together with the same manager and the same ideas for a long period of time,” he added.

“They are really clinical in some moments and we need to be well prepared if we want to bring something positive from this game.

“I am really surprised about Brighton, Huddersfield and Newcastle. For all three teams, coming up from the Championship is not easy.

“To play in this way in the first nine games, being really well prepared mentally in football terms to get points and win games, is what makes the competition really tough.”
