Saints star’s hopes for England’s U17 world champions

Show/hide article…

JAMES Ward-Prowse hopes England’s Under-17 World Cup winners get the opportunities he has had with Saints.

The midfielder celebrates his 23rd birthday tomorrow but has already made 180 appearances for Saints, including 144 in the Premier League.

Ward-Prowse, who made his Saints debut when he was still only 16, hopes the England U17 players that overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Spain 5-2 in Saturday’s final, seven of whom are at Chelsea or Manchester City, will get similar opportunities in the top flight.

“We watched the last half hour as we were travelling to Brighton,” said the former England U21 captain, who also played for England at U17, U19 and U20 level.

“Everyone had an interest in it and to see them win it the way they did was great. It takes courage to come back from 2-0 down.

"So to get five goals - and the quality of the goals - as well … to see them all celebrating you could see how much it meant to them.

“Overall it’s been a great summer for English football with the seniors qualifying for the World Cup and the younger age-group sides doing well.

“Hopefully these players get chances in their respective clubs’ first teams and they can improve the great [England] squad we’ve already got.”

Manchester City’s Phil Foden was rightly lauded after scoring twice in the final before receiving the Golden Ball award for being the player of the tournament.

“He’s obviously done well in the tournament, hopefully he goes back to his club and gets a chance there as well,” added Ward-Prowse, who was still only 17 when he made his Premier League debut at Manchester City five years ago.

He soon provided a reminder of his dead-ball ability after being recalled at Brighton.

Seven minutes into his first Premier League game for more than a month, Ward-Prowse’s free kick hit the post before being headed in by Steven Davis.

“It was nice to contribute towards the first goal, I was just disappointed we couldn’t keep up our early dominance and take all three points,” he added.

“We didn’t quite stay on the front foot, we dropped back after getting the goal.

"But it’s not the worst result and we have a chance to get some momentum against Burnley.”

Fan banned from all matches for five years for shouting racist abuse at player

Show/hide article…

A man has been banned from attending any football matches for five years after racially abusing a Brentford player as he took a corner.

Christopher Boyes, 32, from Totton in Southampton, shouted racist insults at striker Ollie Watkins as he took the set piece during the Brentford v Derby Championship game on September 26.

The Derby County fan was escorted out of Griffin Park Stadium by police officers.

Boyes was sentenced for a racially aggravated public order offence when he appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court today.

He was hit with a 12-month community order with 200 hours of unpaid work and also received a football banning order stopping him from attending any matches for five years.

Boyes saw his punishment increased from 150 hours of unpaid work to 200 hours under hate crime sentencing powers, following an application for an uplift to the sentence by the Crown Prosecution Service.

London Crown Prosecution Service lawyer, Matthew Groves, said: "This sentence sends out a clear message - hate crimes are serious offences and will not be tolerated.

"The words used by Boyes were racist, offensive and antagonistic. He will now pay for his actions through an increased sentence and he will also be prohibited from being a spectator at football matches.

“I hope this prosecution empowers victims of hate crimes to come forward and stop others from also being subjected to vile abuse.”

Southampton would “love to be more creative” but it isn’t that simple

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu admits Saints would “all love to be more creative” and it would make an “amazing difference” if they were – but it’s not that simple.

The 26-year-old believes Mauricio Pellegrino’s side fear being punished on the counterattack if they commit too much going forward.

Romeu speculates that this is why Saints have struggled to win convincingly and not capitalised after taking the lead this term.

“We’d love to all be more creative and make a difference in the last third, but that’s difficult,” said the Spanish midfielder.

“That’s the most difficult part in football and that will make an amazing difference.

“But we need to be quicker with the ball, make them (opponents) run and pull them out of place. That will give us a bigger chance to get to the box and get more chances.”

The former Chelsea man believes that Saints are still to find that balance between being “creative and offensive and not being punished by the counterattack”.

“Whenever we play against these teams we know how good they are defensively,” he said ahead of this Saturday’s game against high-flying Burnley at St Mary’s.

“Everyone is proving very hard to be beaten or to take them out of place. We need to do better with the ball.

“They (opponents) are clever, they are ready to run and recover and go for the counterattack and that’s hard because if you try and attack too much you can get killed by a counterattack.

“We need to find that balance between being creative and offensive and not being punished by a counterattack.”

Romeu has often spoken to manager Mauricio Pellegrino who is “always telling me” that it is important Saints mark attackers even when the team are going forward.

“He’s always telling me when we’re attacking we need to be closer to their strikers because if we lose the ball and they’re free it’s easier for them to be free and run and get that counterattack,” he said.

“While we’re attacking we have to defend and allow our attacking players to create problems but we defensively have to be ready for the counter.”

But Romeu agrees that Saints need to gamble more when going forward to help them score more often.

“Yes, to break the lines without a doubt you have to play forward and that’s the one of the things we need to get,” he said.

“Against Brighton we couldn’t break the lines, but we need to make sure our defensive parts are strong and from there we need to build the momentum and get those players up front.

“We need to feed them more balls and give them better chances.”

Saints also need to learn that scoring one goal is often not enough to win games, as they discovered to their cost in the 1-1 draw at Brighton last weekend.

“We thought one goal was enough but that’s not what you have to do,” he said. “We score one but we have to go for the second and keep going.

“Even if we lose we have to keep going for the same and the style of play must always be the same.”

Southampton face a daunting task against away day specialists Burnley

Show/hide article…

SAINTS face a daunting task in trying to get the better of one of this season’s trickiest Premier League away teams when Burnley rack up to St Mary’s on Saturday.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men have often struggled in front of their own fans this term, and their confidence can be shaky after winning only two of their six league home games so far.

A victory on Saturday for Saints is vital considering six of their next ten games are against the Premier League’s big guns.

But the Clarets arrive at St Mary’s boasting a quite remarkable record on the road, having lost just once in five away games this term.

That is even more impressive when considering last season they won just a single game away from Turf Moor and in their run-in so far have faced Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea.

They will not be easily defeated at St Mary’s and Saints could be frustrated again on home turf if the Clarets continue in the same vein.

Sean Dyche’s well-organised side have only lost to the irrepressible City, who haven’t dropped a point at the Etihad Stadium at this point, but have come back from Spurs and Liverpool with impressive 1-1 draws.

They shocked everyone, not least Antonio Conte, on the opening day of the Premier League season when they returned from reigning champions Chelsea with a 3-2 triumph.

Burnley had not won away until April 29 at Crystal Palace last season, but this term achieved that at the first time of asking.

That is something Dyche hailed that as the potential catalyst for this excellent away form.

“Winning away from home on the first day quietens down some stories - we’re written off at the start of every season. It kills off a few things early doors and it allows the players that space for growth,” he said post-match at Stamford Bridge.

Saints also boast a good away record – although have not faced any of the leading sides so far, and arguably should have collected more points on their travels after losing late on against Stoke.

Nonetheless Saints have picked up five points in four away games, but face Liverpool, City and Chelsea in three of their next four trips.

In contrast, and troublingly, Saints have picked up eight points – the same as Burnley have on the road in one fewer game – in six home matches.

Those problems at home have hampered their progress this term and, with the tricky customers Burnley arriving on Saturday, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Saints’ suffer from this familiar ailment.

Southampton brace for Burnley’s aerial bombardment

Show/hide article…

SAINTS must brace for an aerial bombardment when they welcome Burnley to St Mary’s in the Premier League on Saturday.

Sean Dyche’s side have ruled the skies over Premier League stadiums this season, and lead the way as the best side in the air in the top-flight after ten games played, having won 23.2 aerial duels per match.

With 6ft2in Sam Vokes and 6ft3in Chris Wood both options up top, the Clarets have looked to get it on the heads of their target-men, taking the joint-most headed shots this season (31).

With Everton, Burnley have on average 3.1 headed shots per game, a league high which should have alerted Saints to the dangers that await.

Studying the overall team statistics, games involving Burnley have featured on average 42.9 aerial duels, which is the most in the Premier League.

More importantly, the Clarets have won more than half of those and will likely be on the aerial offensive again at St Mary’s.

There are four Burnley players in the top ten of the most aerially dominant players in the Premier League, with Southampton-born man Vokes (3rd), Wood (6th) and centre back pairing James Tarkowski (7th) and Ben Mee (8th) all up there.

The first Saints player to make the grade is Oriol Romeu, who is 28th in the rankings, having won on average 3.1 aerial duels per match.

With two defensive players represented on that list, it is clear Burnley are pretty resilient aerially at the back too.

Overall, the seventh-placed Clarets have conceded the fourth fewest goals in the Premier League after ten games, having let in nine goals. Saints have conceded ten.

It was a concern for Burnley after central defender Michael Keane’s exit to Everton in the summer, but the impressive partnership of Tarkowski and Mee have really shone and will be hard to break down at St Mary’s.

It would therefore seem unwise for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side to go too overboard on lofted delivers in this one, although have often favoured crosses this term.

If they do get through on goal, Saints still face a big task to get past Burnley’s impressive back-up stopper Nick Pope, who has been exceptional since replacing injured England international Tom Heaton in the first half in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in September.

In his seven Premier League appearances Pope, who joined from Charlton Athletic in July 2016, has kept four clean sheets to go with several top displays.

Jaïdi on trip to Welsh capital

Show/hide article…

Southampton Under-23s travel to Cardiff today (1pm GMT) in search of their first points in this year’s Premier League Cup competition, after being foiled by Watford last time out.

Radhi Jaïdi’s side were narrowly beaten in round one of fixtures, while Group B counterparts Cardiff and Blackburn played out a lively 3-3 draw.

The results leave Saints’ youngsters afoot of the four-team standings, but with plenty still to play for in these early stages of the competition.

Talking about the three day gap between recent fixtures, following the 1-0 loss to Brighton in Premier League 2 on Monday, Jaïdi said: "It is beneficial, we’ll have a quick feedback session and then expecting a reaction from the boys. I thought the attitude and mentality [against Brighton] was good, they should be happy with the performance.

"It’s also a great opportunity for us to go and compete, and impose ourselves on this competition. Three points will keep us in the race for top of the table.

"It is a competition we want to stay in for as long as possible, the first game didn’t go to plan. We conceded sloppy goals and didn’t start well, so hopefully we’ve learnt from mistakes.

“As far as I know it will be a direct game, a challenge in midfield and defensively. It will be energetic and there will be space in behind to explore, so that makes it interesting.”

Stars set to face off at special sports quiz

Show/hide article…

IT IS a rivalry unlike any seen before.

Two of Hampshire’s biggest teams are set to go head-to-head once again when they test their sporting knowledge at a special quiz.

The Mountbatten School, in Romsey, will be hosting its annual Sports Quiz on November 23, featuring players from Hampshire County Cricket Club and Southampton Football Club.

Over the last 32 years, the quiz has played host to some top names including Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Robin Smith, and Michael Lumb.

More recently, Shane Long, Charlie Austin, Matt Targett, Reece Topley, Chris Wood and Sean Ervine have all taken part.

Last year’s quiz saw two special guest stars making a return visit.

They were Matt Le Tissier, who spent his entire professional club career with Southampton, and Francis Benali, a loyal club legend, recently in the media spotlight for his 1,000-mile charity run between every Premier League ground and Benali’s Big Run.

Hosted by assistant deputy headteacher Mark Chance, with Scott Osbourne, head of PE as the Quiz Master, the teams will be led through various rounds including the ever popular Captains’ Challenge.

The previous quiz saw Hampshire Cricket Club defeated by just two points in the final round.

All cash raised during the event will be donated to the Pebbles Charity in South Africa.

That is a charity that enriches the lives of disadvantaged children and families in the Winelands farming communities, and was supported by our students on our recent Rugby tour to South Africa.

Tickets with table seating are available at £6 each for adults and £5 each for children.

Alternatively, a whole table of ten may be purchased for £55.

Seating in rows is available at a ticket price of £4 per adult and £3 per child.

Saints fan arrested after ‘abusing Brighton fans’

Show/hide article…

A MAN has been charged with abusing Brighton and Hove Albion supporters in the third reported case involving opposition fans.

Southampton supporter Jonathan Coombs, 28, was arrested inside the Amex stadium, shortly before the Seagulls’ game against the Saints on Sunday.

The shop employee, from Southampton, has been charged with using threatening and abusive words and behaviour.

It comes after two previous incidents involving away supporters abusing Albion fans.

In September, Leicester City supporter Jason Holmes was fined after making homophobic chants during the Foxes’ win over Brighton the previous month.

Holmes admitted a charge of indecent chanting and was fined £300 at Leicester Magistrates’ Court.

A second man, aged 21, who was arrested on suspicion of making obscene gestures, was given a caution.

In October, a West Ham fan caused offence after posting homophobic abuse to Albion fans on Twitter, following the Albion’s victory at the London Stadium .

A man named Jay, who goes by the Twitter handle @Crezzwel, posted: “Yes. We did just lose 3-0 to Brighton. * Brighton. A side that shouldn’t even be in the Premier League dirty **.”

The West Ham fan who continued to posted offensive tweets caused a backlash prompting Sussex Police Albion liaison officer PC Darren Balkham, to reply: “Jay, I would quit whilst you are losing. Be assured I have your full details by now and would recommend we continue the chat off line.”

Now Sussex Police have announced they are investigating the homophobic tweets following West Ham’s defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday, October 20.

PC Balkham said: “We take a robust stance in relation to tackling homophobia at football matches, whether home or away.

“Our operation to combat it is recognised by the Football Association as best practice and works on the premise of positive outcomes and education.

“I am pleased that other clubs in the Premier League are supportive and we have already seen action taken against people who have targeted Brighton and Hove Albion supporters.”

Tim Carder, secretary of the Albion Supporters’ Club, said: “We in the supporters’ club, especially Liz Costa and the late Sarah Watts, have been campaigning against homophobic abuse of Albion fans for several decades.

“That campaign has done a great deal to educate football supporters that such abuse is unacceptable in modern society.

“The situation within stadiums is not yet perfect, but homophobic abuse is now generally regarded as antisocial and has led to arrests and convictions, which receive a great deal of publicity.

“If people go on to social media platforms to abuse people then they need to look over their shoulders because it’s also unacceptable and the police may well track them down.

“We applaud Darren Balkham, who is a great friend to Albion fans, for his action.

“Antisocial abuse of any sort, at football matches, in public or on social media, is not acceptable in this day and age, and it’s time that everyone realised that.”

Brighton and Hove Albion FC declined to comment until the matter has been dealt with in court.

Coombs, of Olive Road, Southampton, will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on November 30.
