Puel: It’s an exciting game

Show/hide article…
Arsenal stand in their way of a place in the fifth round of the competition, fresh off the back of their EFL Cup semi-final success over Liverpool.
And Puel is excited by the prospect of another lengthy cup run, despite a busy fixture schedule.
He said: “It’s a great game against a good team. Arsenal have had the possibility to recover all the week, which is not the same for us but it’s an exciting game for the squad.
“In front of our fans its important to find a good result.
“It’s just an opportunity to continue in this competition. It’s important for our fans and for the squad to do this.
“We know we have many games in a short amount of time which is difficult with a lot of injuries.
“But we have got to try to play a good game and to find a result.”

Saints Foundation to support Teenage Cancer Trust

Show/hide article…
Southampton Football Club and Saints Foundation are proud to be supporting Teenage Cancer Trust on behalf of one of the club’s second-year scholars, Benjamin Cull.
Ben is currently undergoing treatment for Ewings Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, and is receiving the majority of his treatment at Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at Southampton General Hospital.
At today’s game against Arsenal, Ben’s family and friends will be collecting change outside St Mary’s to support Teenage Cancer Trust. Please dig deep if you can!
Saints Foundation will match all donations that are made on matchday.
Teenage Cancer Trust are there to make sure young people don’t face cancer alone. But, right now, for every young person that they reach, there’s another that they can’t.
The Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Southampton opened in 2013 and is designed to feel more like home than a hospital ward. They make sure that the environment is as positive and unintimidating as possible.
Amanda Hetherington, Teenage Cancer Trust Regional Fundraiser for the South, said: “We would like to thank Saints Foundation and the Cull family for all their support.
“Without the generosity of supporters, it would not have been possible to maintain these state-of-the-art facilities for young people with cancer in the south region. Thank you so much.”

Everything you need to know about Southampton vs Arsenal

Show/hide article…
Arsenal travel to Southampton looking to make the FA Cup fifth round yet again, but come against a side brimming with confidence after they made the EFL Cup final this week.
Arsenal have needed to rely on late goals to earn them wins and draw in the Premier League and will not find it easy on the south coast.
TV: Watch it live on BT Sport 2 from 5pm or catch the highlights on BBC1 at 10.30pm.
Alternatively, you can bookmark this page, which will convert into The Independent’s live blog of Saturday’s match.
Danny Welbeck. Arsene Wenger hinted that the former Manchester United man is likely to play against Southampton as part of his rehabilitation from another long injury lay-off. If he can get through the game and look like he’s getting back to near his best then he could be like a new signing for the Gunners for the Premier League title run in.
Arsenal were hammered 4-0 at St Mary’s as the Saints tore Wenger’s team apart on Boxing Day 2015. It also featured a stunning goal from Cucu Martina and two disallowed goals for Southampton.
Shane Long. Long has been a constant threat to Arsenal in the past and scored the crucial goal on Wednesday night to end Liverpool’s hopes of taking the EFL Cup semi-final second leg to extra time.

Southampton vs Arsenal live score and goal updates from FA Cup fourth round tie

Show/hide article…
Whispers are that Alexis Sanchez will start, which suggests the Gunners are taking the FA Cup seriously.
And why not? It’s been Arsene Wenger’s favourite competition over the years, he’s won it six times - more than any other manager in the modern era - and Arsenal are the competition’s joint most successful ever club, with 12 trophies to their name.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. As for today’s game, Theo Walcott is back in the squad, while Granit Xhaka misses out with suspension and Mohamed Elneny is still at the Africa Cup of Nations. David Ospina is likely to start in goal.
Currently, the only injured player for Arsenal is long-term absentee Santi Cazorla.
