Jamie Vardy draws from The Inbetweeners to taunt Kasper Schmeichel

Show/hide article…

Jamie Vardy drew from the sitcom The Inbetweeners to hilariously taunt Leicester team-mate Kasper Schmeicher ahead of the Southampton clash.

It seems the Foxes’ poor form has not affected the morale in the dressing room, with Vardy in especially high spirits last Sunday.

With the teams lining up in the tunnel at St Mary’s, Schmeichel embraced fellow countryman Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, which prompted Vardy to quote a famous scene from the hit TV series, much to the amusement of everyone else.

On the pitch, Southampton increased the pressure on Leicester by inflicting a second straight 3-0 defeat on the champions.

The hosts led 2-0 at the break after strikes by James Ward-Prowse, his first goal since September, and Jay Rodriguez.

Dusan Tadic’s late penalty ensured the Foxes, who are still waiting for their first away win in the Premier League this season, remain deep in trouble in 15th place, five points above the relegation zone. The 37 goals they have now conceded is more than they shipped throughout the whole of last season.

Southampton v Arsenal live stream - How to watch FA Cup 4th Round online

Show/hide article…

After a long day of 4th Round FA Cup action the attention shifts to the evening kick-off, with Southampton hosting Arsenal for what is sure to be another incredible match between the two sides.

Southampton come into the game off the back of a terrific 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday to secure their place in next month’s EFL Cup final.

Arsenal meanwhile have endured a turbulent week, dominated by Arsene Wenger’s four-match touchline ban, following a shove on fourth official Anthony Taylor during the Gunners dramatic 2-1 victory against Burnley last Sunday.

Arsenal will also be wary of the Saints, having not only lost 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup in November when Southampton visited the Emirates, but also with Painful memories of their 4-0 mauling from the season before still fresh in the mind.

However, with a number of injuries and fatigue possibly playing a part, Saints boss Claude Puel has suggested that he may have to field a few players who fans may not have regularly seen in the first team line-up.

“I’ll try to have a good balance between young and experienced players for this game.”

Seven things you missed from Southampton 0-5 Arsenal

Show/hide article…

Arsenal demolished Southampton 5-0 to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup, with Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck leading the way.

Walcott scored a hat-trick against his former club while Welbeck netted two, and created one, as he returned to the starting XI after nine months away.

Don’t worry if you missed anything during the dominant display from the Gunners, because Sportsmail’s eagle-eyed team made sure the all-important finer details were preserved for posterity.

Welbeck’s back with a bang with two on his ‘debut’

Danny Welbeck made the perfect return from injury as he scored twice, and laid on another, in what was his first start for nine months.

His glorious return also allowed the BT Sport commentary team to bring out one of football’s great cliches, with his first start following a long-term injury being compared to being ‘like a new signing’ for the Gunners on at least three occasions.

Two goals and an assist on your ‘debut’ is a good start…

Then he celebrates by impersonating a Turkish chef

Is Welbeck the first Premier League player to imitate a Turkish chef while celebrating a goal? Probably.

After a sizzling return to the starting XI with a brace, Welbeck celebrated by sprinkling salt in homage to Nusret Gokce, who went viral earlier this month with his flamboyant salt sprinkling routine. It also earned him the name #Saltbae. The internet is a wonderful place.

Gokce has racked up more than nine million views on Instagram and has already been booked to open several restaurants as a result of his displays. Welbeck’s imitation sent social media wild, of course.

With Wenger banished to the stands, as he served the first of his four-game touchline ban, it was Steve Bould who oversaw Arsenal’s riot from the bench.

The Frenchman was in regular communication using an earpiece, of course, but any more results like this and he may be out of a job.

Bould’s instant impact saw him christened as Steve Bouldiola on social media, in homage to Manchester City boss Pep, although it’s debatable whether the former Gunners centre-half could pull off a turtleneck and designer jeans in quite the same way.

He had the Arsenal fans singing his name by the end, though, as ‘Steve Bould’s yellow army’ rang out at the Emirates.

All changes are equal, but some are more equal than others

The magic of the cup? Well, both teams made 10 changes to their side for this fourth round clash and that tells you everything you need to know.

But while Southampton drafted in a group of inexperienced youngsters averaging a little over 12 appearances apiece this season, presumably in a bid to strengthen their bid to secure a mid-table place, Arsenal brought back a number of big Guns.

Back came Welbeck, to devastating effect, as well as Hector Bellerin and £17million summer signing Lucas Perez. It showed.

The Saints’ FA Cup dream was dead inside 20 minutes thanks to Welbeck’s early double, but that did nothing to dampen the fans’ thoughts of Wembley.

Claude Puel’s side, of course, will be playing Manchester United under the famous arch on February 26 in the EFL Cup final following their success against Liverpool, with the the St Mary’s crowd keen to remember that fact despite things going wrong on the pitch.

‘Wembley, Wembley, we’re the famous Southampton and we’re off to Wembley’, they sang.

It was quickly dashed, but there was plenty of optimism heading into this game on the south coast.

Fresh from booking their Wembley place in the EFL Cup, Saints fans showed their joy by decorating a post box in the city in the style of their team’s shirts.

Thankfully for the long-term future of said post box, the fans opted to recreate their side’s red and white home shirts, rather than their black and grey away number.

What’s in a name? A lot of letters

If it were not for a three hyphens, you could be forgiven for thinking Arsenal were lining up with a six-man midfield.

It was however, just three, with the trio selected by Arsene Wenger all sporting double-barrelled names.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Jeff Reine-Adelaide are the three in question, with their names using a total of 58 letters.

How Arsenal destroyed Southampton and why Danny Welbeck’s return could prove crucial

Show/hide article…

Southampton had conceded just one goal in their previous five matches, but they were ripped apart by Arsenal’s incisive front four and shipped three in just 35 first-half minutes, ultimately letting in as many in 90 minutes as they had in their last nine games.

With Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott running in behind, the Southampton defenders were forced to sit deeper, which allowed Lucas Perez, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and especially Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain time and space to find them.

Arsenal’s cause was helped by the inability of Southampton’s midfield to afford any protection to their defence, with Oxlade-Chamberlain finding no resistance to his bursts from central midfield from any of Jordy Clasie, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Harrison Reed. In the end the hosts were relieved to have only lost 5-0.

Olivier Giroud has been in excellent goalscoring form, but his lack of pace and mobility means he is never going to stretch defences in the way that Welbeck or Alexis Sanchez can.

Welbeck was making his first start in almost nine months at St Mary’s but he looked as if he had never been away with a first-half masterclass on the south coast.

Gardos: We must learn from this

Show/hide article…

A hat-trick from Theo Walcott and a Danny Welbeck brace ended the hosts hopes of another memorable cup run.

Gardos, who was making his first appearance since February 2015 after injury, says the side must learn from their exit.

He said: “We’re all disappointed because of the result but we can learn something from this game and we have to move on because we have a difficult period coming up.

“We conceded pretty easily and of course you’re disappointed. We also had a lot of young players today and I think they had more experience, which proved the difference.”

One bright spot on otherwise forgettable afternoon, was that six academy graduates gained further first-team experience, something which Gardos feel could prove invaluable for the future.

“I think it proves that the Academy keeps giving good youth players and they did well even though the result wasn’t what we wanted,” Gardos continued.

“They have to learn that you have got to keep going because things like that can happen.”

Southampton 0-5 Arsenal: Walcott bags hat-trick as Saints are hammered

Show/hide article…

Saints tasted the bitter side of cup football as former academy product Theo Walcott bagged a hat-trick as Arsenal handed out a 5-0 thrashing to dump Saints out of the FA Cup just three days after Claude Puel’s men beat Liverpool to reach Wembley.

Puel made ten changes to the side that won at Anfield to reach the League Cup showpiece, but a weakened Arsenal side were comfortably better and handed Saints a thrashing in a one-sided game at St Mary’s.

Former Saints star Theo Walcott scored three goals in the fourth round tie against his old club, with Danny Welbeck bagging a brace.

Arsenal put Saints under pressure in the opening stages and threatened after just three minutes.

A quick counter attack saw Theo Walcott get to the right by-line and cut back to Jeff Reine-Adelaide, but his shot from just inside the area was charged down by Jack Stephens.

Arsenal were knocking on the door again moments later as Lucas Perez flashed a cross into the six yard box but nobody was able to get on the end of it.

Saints were really struggling to cope with the Gunners, were giving the ball away cheaply, and were relieved to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shot from 20 yards whistle wide of the post.

The inevitable happened on 15 minutes as Arsenal got the goal they had been threatening since the off.

Saints had dropped so deep but were still allowing space in behind to runners, and when Ainsley Matiland-Niles’ ball was flicked round the corner by Perez, it played Welbeck in on goal.

He produced an excellent chipped finish to lob the advancing Harry Lewis, with the ball clipping the underside of the bar on its way into the net.

It got even worse as Saints contributed to their own downfall as Welbeck scored again on 22 minutes.

The goal came from a high ball forward from inside his own half by right back Hector Bellerin.

Welbeck was lurking on the shoulder of the last man, in this case Stephens, and, despite an average first touch as he brought the ball down, goalkeeper Lewis had got lost in a no man’s land in the penalty area and the Arsenal man was able to finish low through his legs.

Saints finally created something a couple of minutes later as David Ospina ended up on the ground outside his area trying to chase down Shane Long, but when the ball dropped in the area to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg he volleyed over the bar.

Long managed to work Ospina moments later as he shot from a difficult angle after intercepting Cuco Martina’s curling ball forward, but the Gunners keeper dived to turn it away.

Arsenal should have had a third on 29 minutes when Shkodran Mustafi was able to meet a right wing free kick inside the six yard box but he flicked his header wide of the far post.

Hojbjerg tried his luck from a free kick just outside the box but could only curl his effort round the outside of the wall and into the side netting.

Saints were staring a hammering square in the face when Arsenal scored again on 35 minutes.

Once more they played a large part in their own demise with Stephens slamming a ball into Hojbjerg to hand possession to Arsenal.

They moved quickly with Perez giving Welbeck the chance to play in a cross from the left by-line.

Sam McQueen stood still in the six yard box ready to clear but Theo Walcott nipped in in front of him to have the simple task of finishing for 3-0.

Josh Sims had a chance to try and pull one back in first half stoppage time after Martina robbed Kieran Gibbs of the ball and cut it back, but a heavy first touch allowed the ball to get away from him.

Arsenal continued on the front foot at the start of the second period, and Bellerin might have done better than pick out Lewis when found in the area eight minutes after the restart.

Saints made a double change in a last bid to try and find a goal that would work them back into the game with Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond replacing Lloyd Isgrove and Long on 64 minutes.

Arsenal responded by bringing on Alexis Sanchez for Welbeck in attack.

Jordy Clasie tried to make something happen with a shot from 25 yards but it sailed well over the bar.

However, Arsenal put the tie beyond any doubt as they scored again on 69 minutes.

It was another fast flowing move as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain intercepted and burst forward. He played it to Sanchez on the overlap, and the sub looked up from the right by-line and cut back to Walcott, who was in space having held his run, despite there being plenty of Saints players in the box.

He produced a first time right footed finish which curled into the far corner.

Arsenal threw on more firepower with Alex Iwobi coming on for Reine-Adelaide.

In truth, Arsenal lost some of their impetus in the closing stages knowing that they had already done more than enough to book their place in the fifth round, but that didn’t stop them from adding another goal with five minutes remaining.

It was another quick break from Arsenal with Sanchez holding the ball up and waiting for the run of Walcott to his right.

He slipped the ball into the former Saints academy product who coolly slotted a low finish past Lewis to make it 5-0.

It might have got even worse in the dying seconds had it not been for Lewis getting quickly off his line to block at the feet of Perez.

It was really an irrelevance at that stage though as Saints were left to focus on the Premier League campaign and the EFL Cup final for the remainder of the season as Arsenal marched on in convincing fashion.
