Callum Slattery watched on as England’s Young Lions started their Toulon Tournament campaign with a 1-0 win over Angola.
The team, which is made up a mixture of players from the under-18 to under-20 age groups, triumphed thanks to Ike Ugbo’s goal early in the second half.
Saints midfielder Slattery was an unused substitute for the game, in Aubagne, but will hope to see action when the Young Lions face Cuba, in their second group match, on Thursday.

89 – The number of interceptions he made in the Premier League during 2016/17. Virgil van Dijk, on 54, was the next closest Saints player. No midfielder made more in the whole of the division, while Hull’s Curtis Davies and Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny (both 90) were the only ones ahead of Romeu.
66 – Clearances made during the Premier League season, which was the most by any Saints midfielder.
13 – The number of shots Romeu blocked, which was the most of any Southampton midfielder in the 2016/17 Premier League campaign.
Saints will go to Austria, France – and Brentford – for their pre-season this summer.
The club have so far confirmed just one friendly, that away to the Championship side in a game at Griffin Park on Saturday, July 22, with a 3pm kick-off.
That fixture will be sandwiched between a trip to Austria, and another in France, with friendlies yet to be confirmed.
