Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Why Jurgen Klopp could be crucial to beating Chelsea

Show/hide article…

The Southampton defender has been linked with a move to the Reds this summer with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City also interested.

Van Dijk has been impressive ever since his move to the Saints from Celtic back in 2015 and it could take an offer of £50m for him to be allowed to leave.

The Daily Mirror say Klopp is ready to make it clear the 25-year-old is his top target and that he will build the defence around him.

Liverpool will hope the added bonus of Champions League football will convince Van Dijk to choose Anfield over the other clubs interested.

Football transfer rumours and gossip - ‘Liverpool have realistic chance of beating Chelsea for Virgil van Dijk’

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are said to be in with a realistic chance of winning the race to sign Southampton’s in-demand central-defender Virgil van Dijk this summer.

Premier League champions Chelsea are still favourites to sign the £50m-rated Dutchman, while Arsenal and Manchester City have also noted their interest.

Liverpool could steal a march on their rivals as the Mirror reports that van Dijk is attracted by the proposition of playing under Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp would dearly love to make van Dijk the vital component of his Liverpool spine and turn the 25-year-old into a Kop legend.

Puel’s position remains in doubt

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has headed off on holiday with his future as Saints boss yet to be confirmed.

Puel has his end of season debrief with the club’s football chiefs, led by vice-chairman Les Reed, and has now jetted away for a break with his family after a gruelling first year at St Mary’s.

While Puel’s initial contribution to the club’s end of season review is now complete, back at Staplewood there is still much reflection taking place.

One of the top items on the agenda is the manager’s position, with the club well aware that a large portion of the fan base have turned on Puel and would like to see a change.

Nobody could accuse Saints under the leadership of Reed of making kneejerk reactions under pressure, and again the club are taking their time to digest the ramifications of potentially changing manager.

The two major factors to be taken into consideration are whether the club will progress in the way they desire if Puel remains in charge.

And, vitally, whether there is a manager out there who Saints could land who will do a better job and take them to where they want to go.

Puel’s first season in charge was far from the disaster that some have portrayed. Indeed, many neutrals are puzzled as to why there would even be a question mark surrounding his future after he guided Saints to an eighth placed Premier League finish and the EFL Cup final.

Closer to the club the frustrations over the lack of entertainment, and, in particular, goals at St Mary’s have bubbled over.

When it comes to any possible replacement, Saints will want to know they can get a top target before making a change.

Reed will be all too aware that simply pleasing the crowd by sacking Puel would not be in the best interests if they end up having to settle on a replacement, or are forced into a massive gamble.

In that scenario it would be possible to argue that sticking with Puel is a better bet, but whether or not that will happen is likely to become clear as the review concludes in the coming days.

Former Saints boss opens new-look business

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints boss Harry Redknapp opened a new-look business - by using a mini chainsaw to cut the ribbon.

The Birmingham City manager was a guest of honour at a ceremony marking the completion of improvements to the Fordingbridge branch of Elliotts, which supplies building products.

Harry praised branch manager John Tague as he recalled fond memories of football training in Fordingbridge.

He said: "When I managed Bournemouth we had nowhere to train pre-season – we never had a training pitch. John fixed us up so we could train on Fordingbridge Rec for six weeks.

“I’ll never forget what John did for me then, what he did for the football club. When he asked me to come along today it was a pleasure.”

Mr Tague added: “It was great to have Harry celebrate with us and cut the ribbon. He even told us a few football stories and signed footballs for the kids.”

Boufal set for Morocco action

Show/hide article…

The Atlas Lions are hosting the Dutch, in Agadir, at 6.30pm BST, with the match allowing Boufal and his colleagues a chance to sharpen up ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Cameroon on Thursday 8th June.

There will be no Saints interest on the opposite side, with Virgil van Dijk not available for selection due to his recovery from injury, while Jordy Clasie missed out on the latest squad.

The subsequent clash with Cameroon will be Morocco’s opening game of qualification, with Malawi and Comoros also in their group.

Cameroon are the hosts of the 2019 tournament and will qualify regardless of their position in the group, with the other best-placed team joining them.
