Javi Gracia dismisses reports Watford players clashed with fans after FA Cup defeat to Southampton

Show/hide article…

New Watford head coach Javi Gracia dismissed suggestions Christian Kabasele and Jose Holebas were arguing with the club’s supporters at the final whistle of their 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round defeat at Southampton.

The Hornets were booed off at half-time and then again at the final whistle.

Gracia and his team went to commiserate with the away fans when Kabasele appeared to be having a heated exchange with one individual when he was dragged away by Ben Watson, and Holebas then took his place before Watson also dragged him away.

Instead of the positive reaction Watford would have hoped for when appointing Gracia to succeed the sacked Marco Silva they were unconvincing, and fell to their ninth defeat in 13.

When asked of the incident at the final whistle, Spaniard Gracia responded: "I do not understand what supporters sing. I only can say at the end of the match the players went to say thank you and me too.

"It is hard because in the first match we did not get a good result but I am happy because I saw the support of a lot of our fans.

"I am very grateful and I feel sorry for them.

"I hoped for a better performance. We did not start in the best way and conceded an early goal.

"The only thing I am worried about is trying to get a good result.

“The match was tough but I have seen a reaction, I have seen the team want to get the goal and fight hard until the end.”

Southampton 1-0 Watford: Stephens goal sees Saints progress

Show/hide article…

Jack Stephens marked his 24th birthday with his first goal for Southampton as they progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 home win over Watford.

The visitors’ new head coach Javi Gracia was overseeing his first fixture since his arrival to succeed the sacked Marco Silva, but their form remained unconvincing as they fell to a ninth loss in 13 games.

After Stephens’ early goal they played with the same lack of conviction that had contributed to Silva’s dismissal, finishing fortunate not to lose by a wider scoreline to a team also struggling, and who in that same period have won only twice.

If Watford had hoped to capitalise on the potential lift Gracia’s appointment could inspire, they ultimately wasted their finest chance shortly after kick-off when in the fourth minute they conceded the opening goal.

Nerves and a lack of confidence have undermined Southampton this season as much as the absence of a reliable goalscorer, so in taking such an early lead they quickly settled in front of what has been their restless support.

Ryan Bertrand found Shane Long from a left-wing free-kick after Daryl Janmaat had fouled Sofiane Boufal, and the forward struck towards goal, where goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis saved with his feet as far as Stephens, who then routinely poked the rebound in from close range.

The past 12 months had already been positive for Stephens, who amid an injury to Virgil van Dijk and then his recent transfer to Liverpool had established himself in central defence.

That his fortunes had improved while his club’s had declined may not have been lost on him, so it will have encouraged that they were thereafter largely in control.

Cedric Soares had come closest to doubling their lead when shooting just wide of the left post from close range before a brief exchange with Richarlison over an attempted block when, on the stroke of half-time, the Brazilian almost scored a brilliant but undeserved equaliser.

Seeing Alex McCarthy off of his line, the forward floated a delicate chip from 25 yards and towards the top-right corner, from where the back-pedalling goalkeeper did well to recover and tip over.

Long had twice more threatened when, shortly after the hour mark, the influential Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg went closer still when shooting against the underside of the crossbar with a powerful first-time effort, also from 25 yards.

That a second goal did not follow is something Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino hopes will be corrected by the arrival of new club-record £19million signing Guido Carrillo, the striker who made his debut from the bench in the 83rd minute.

He had too little time to make a significant impact, but it will have been refreshing for Pellegrino that, as the final whistle neared, it was the visiting supporters, after a late miss from Jerome Sinclair, and not the regulars at St Mary’s expressing their dissatisfaction.

Southampton 1-0 Watford: Pellegrino feels Saints progression

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes Saints are continuing to improve at a crucial time as they eased into the FA Cup fourth round with a win over Watford.

Victory over the Hornets was a first for Saints at St Mary’s since November, and gave the team an important confidence boost ahead of a crucial Premier League double header against Brighton and West Brom.

Pellegrino said: “I think the two more important reasons for this victory is to move in this 90 minutes to the next round. We want to progress in this competition.

“On the other hand I think in the dressing room our feeling is we are growing as a team, little by little.

“We are playing much better with the ball and without the ball.

“When you have to suffer we compete well.

“In comparison with the game against Watford home or away it was the best first 60 minutes.

“We couldn’t kill the game earlier but I think we deserve to win.

“We suffer at the end and dangerous with direct crosses and we change with Maya to try and be strong in this moment.”

Saints were the better side against an injury hit Watford, who were poor in their first game under new manager Javi Gracia.

Saints’ victory didn’t stop Pellegrino getting criticised by some fans after he brought off Sofiane Boufal and introduced Maya Yoshida as part of a back five in the second period.

Pellegrino, whose Saints side surrendered a two goal advantage against the same opponents at Vicarage Road just a fortnight earlier, explained his decision.

“We have in our mind the last game 15 days ago and we were winning 2-0 and Watford with direct play caused a lot of problems,” he said.

“When you move one players to the back three you will lose the ball if you don’t manage the ball properly.

“With Jeremy Pied and Cedric they were playing in this way with a lot of direct play.

“I think we did more or less ok and it’s a risk but in this moment you have to solve the most important thing to be stronger.

“We concede a lot of situations in a recent game against them and little by little we have to manage much better this situation.

“We didn’t play too many games in this way but we have to adapt.”

He added: “I think we did more or less ok to try to win the game.

“The efficiency is something we have to improve but we play against a good side with good capacity and we control most of the time well.

“It is difficult at the end to stop the long ball and long throw from the goalkeeper and physically they have maybe got some players stronger than our players.

“With the ball on the ground we create trouble in wide areas and couldn’t score the second goal to win more.”

West Ham hold talks over possible deal to sign £13.5m-a-year Pelle

Show/hide article…

West Ham have discussed a possible deal for former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle.

The 32-year-old joined Shandong Luneng for £12million in July 2016 and is on a huge salary at around £13.5m a season but the Chinese side are willing to cut their losses.

Pelle, who scored 30 goals in two seasons at Southampton, is eager to return to Europe and is open to linking up with his former Southampton team-mate Jose Fonte at West Ham.

Compromises must be made on his salary but the fact he has Premier League experience is an attraction for David Moyes.

The West Ham boss is struggling to add forwards, though he has considered Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge.

Midfield remains a priority, with Anderlecht’s Leander Dendoncker and Fulham’s Tom Cairney among his targets.

Watford have also expressed interest in Belgium international Dendoncker who will cost around £24m. The 22-year-old has also been offered to Everton.

Fulham are reluctant to sell Cairney in this window although the 27-year-old is keen to go and was left out of their squad to face Barnsley on Saturday as he receives treatment on a knee injury.

West Ham have also asked about taking Bologna left-back Adam Masina, 24, on loan.

Pellegrino has a week to save his job as Southampton eye old boy as new boss

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino’s job is hanging by a thread, with Mark Hughes being touted as the Argentine’s successor.

If Pellegrino fails to lift Saints out of the bottom three in the next seven days, then the axe will fall and Hughes will get the call.

Pellegrino faces a win-or-bust derby against Brighton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night, with another crucial relegation battle at West Brom to follow on Saturday.

The worried Southampton board are expecting at least four points from the clashes and, if Pellegrino doesn’t deliver, they won’t be afraid to act.

They will attempt to bring in Hughes who spent two years on the south coast as a Saints player between 1998 and 2000.

Although he was sacked by Stoke earlier in the month, there is a belief within the Southampton hierarchy that he has the experience to help guide the club to safety, if results don’t improve under former Liverpool defender Pellegrino.

They brought in Pellegrino last summer after controversially sacking Claude Puel, who had led Saints to eighth place in the Premier League and to the League Cup final, where they lost narrowly to Manchester United.

But, under Pellegrino, Southampton have slipped into relegation trouble and face neighbours Brighton, struggling in the bottom three – and are now just two points ahead of rock-bottom, but rejuvenated, Swansea.

That has set the alarm bells ringing at St Mary’s, with former Wales manager Hughes placed on standby if Pellegrino, who admits he is under increasing pressure, continues to struggle.

Pellegrino: We’re getting closer to our “real level”

Show/hide article…

The manager has been the first to admit his side have not reached their potential in several games this season, but has identified clear progress in recent performances.

Saints are now four matches unbeaten after clinching their place in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round with a 1-0 victory over Watford at St Mary’s on Saturday.

“We have been working a lot to try to improve with the ball a little bit more,” Pellegrino said.

“Every single game is an opportunity to believe we can recover our real level, and today (Saturday) we showed in some moments that we are a little bit closer.

“It is really difficult to move forward quickly from a really bad situation, but I repeat that I think the feeling is that we are in a good way; we are working hard and the mentality of the players is much better now.”

Stephens’ fourth-minute goal, his first for the club, was the crowning moment on the defender’s 24th birthday.

“I have to say Happy Birthday and enjoy this day, but the goal is important for everybody,” Pellegrino added.

“We have to be humble because in one action everything can change, but we have to be positive and we have got confidence now.”

Saints to “keep pushing” for Promes

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insists Saints will “keep pushing” to try and sign Quincy Promes before the close of the transfer window.

With the countdown on until the window shuts on Wednesday night, Saints have so far managed one sale and one signing in January.

Virgil van Dijk completed his £75m move to Liverpool, while Saints have broken their club transfer record to bring in Guido Carrillo from Monaco for £19.2m.

If they could land Dutch winger Promes from Spartak Moscow the fee would likely eclipse that which they paid for Carrillo, with talk that it could be in the region of £30m.

Promes is thought to be open to a move to St Mary’s, but there remains much work to do, particularly when it comes to getting Spartak to part with a player they would prefer to keep until the end of their season.

Pellegrino said: “It’s one of the players that has been following in the next few months but the market is too difficult.

“We wait until the end. We keep pushing but we wait.

“I don’t know. I think in this club everybody wants to try to improve our level.

“In the market the negotiation is two sides and you can do your part but if the other side don’t agree it’s not easy.”

Saints will have to make a big decision in the next few days.

They may find themselves either having to pay more than they would like to secure Promes, move on to another target to see if they can get that deal done, or choose to settle with what they have got.

Pellegrino clearly would like another quality addition to his squad, but is adamant there is only any point in signing another player if they are clearly going to improve things as Saints don’t need just more numbers.

“We don’t know,” said Pellegrino when asked if the club would move on to another target if they couldn’t land Promes.

“Obviously we will push for the player that we think is the profile we don’t have and are sure they will improve our squad. It’s not a question of numbers.

“To bring players in to the Premier League is not easy, it’s very tight and other clubs compete in the market.”

Pellegrino handed a late debut to Carrillo in the win over Watford and reckoned: “I think obviously to adapt to the situation and the dynamic of the teammates.

“I thought that at the beginning when Shane was on the ground I think that it was the moment for Manolo but in this moment Guido is a big man who can hold the ball.

“He was maybe a bit lost in some moments but it’s normal. At the beginning it’s not easy to go on with the minutes when it’s up and down all the time.”
