Carrillo on Pellegrino reunion

Show/hide article…

Carrillo began his professional career with boyhood club Estudiantes de la Plata as a 19-year-old in 2011 and his development was overseen by the Saints boss for two years between 2013 and 2015.

And, after completing his move to St Mary’s on Thursday night, the striker said that Pellegrino was an important factor in convincing the number 9 to make the switch from Ligue 1 to the Premier League.

“I know him very well, I know his quality as a person and as a coach. His presence here was important in me taking this decision.

“I obviously know the coaching staff, I’ve worked with them in Argentina and I also spoke with some players who were former teammates in Argentina who are now playing in the Premier League and they told me all about the club and gave it a shining reference.

“Therefore, I had no doubts when I took the decision.”

Another fellow Argentine, Swansea City’s Federico Fernandez, helped to seal the deal.

“I also spoke with Fernandez at Swansea who I know from youth football and Estudiantes. He gave me a great recommendation about the club and he said the weather is a little bit better than where he is.”

Carrillo heading for Fantasy attention

Show/hide article…

Guido Carrillo (£6.5m) arrives in Fantasy Premier League to provide another cut-price forward option.

Southampton’s club-record signing is reunited with Mauricio Pellegrino, having played under the Saints manager at Estudiantes in their native Argentina.

Carrillo struggled to cement a starting role at Monaco. He has started seven matches in the past two seasons, making 33 appearances in all.

Yet the target man has still produced 11 goals in his Ligue 1 career.

Seven of those strikes were headed efforts, meaning Carrillo will add a new dimension to the Southampton attack.

Pellegrino’s side have produced a steady supply from wide areas, particularly from full-backs Ryan Bertrand (£5.3m) and Cedric Soares (£4.7m).

Saints rank fifth for successful crosses this season, with 104.

That has helped them record 49 headed shots, though just 11 of those attempts have been on target. Only Huddersfield Town have fewer with eight.

Southampton’s 22.4% accuracy rate for headed shots is the lowest in the Premier League.

But that could improve markedly with Carrillo on board.

He won 57% of his 56 aerial duels in Ligue 1 this season.

That betters the 44.6% of Charlie Austin (£5.9m), the 37.7% of Shane Long (£5.6m) and the 25.5% of Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.3m), who have taken it in turns to lead Pellegrino’s attack.

With Saints slipping to third from bottom in the table, Carrillo’s impact will now be vital ahead of an improving schedule.

Five of Southampton’s next seven opponents score only two in the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR).

If Carrillo can convert Southampton’s service from the flanks over those matches, he may quickly become a target for FPL managers.

Every Premier League club ranked by amount of times they’ve hit the woodwork this season

Show/hide article…

Sometimes the width of the post or crossbar is the difference between winning and losing.

Fans moan and moan about not getting the luck of other teams when a shot ricochets off the post instead of nestling into the side-netting, but who has suffered the most from this?

Are Southampton’s scoring issues overblown? And are the top teams guilty of wayward finishing?

Fleming: We’re a hard team to beat

Show/hide article…

Saints’ young charges have propelled themselves in to third in the Under-18s Premier League standings, second only to Chelsea and Arsenal, with the chance to close the four-point gap against Leicester City tomorrow.

Unbeaten since mid-October, Fleming attributes much of their purple patch to sheer determination and willingness to improve, epitomised by Michael Obafemi’s recent rise to fame - with a first-team debut against Tottenham last weekend.

Talking ahead of tomorrow’s Leicester clash, Fleming commented: "First and foremost the hard work they’ve put in. You don’t get results without the necessary work rate.

"They’ve worked their socks off since pre-season on all aspects of the game. We’re a really hard team to beat now - not always fluent in possession, but as a foundation, we’re a hard team to break down.

“The boys look at the table, and that is reward for them. Myself and Dan look at development and progression as markers. We want them to make the 23s, the first-team and so on. Fundamentally our job is to help these young boys learn how to win games, so our league position is a win win.”

A mere 17-years of age, young striker Obafemi ‘realised his dream’ when called upon by Mauricio Pellegrino last weekend. Fleming reflected on the achievement: "Myself, Danny Butterfield, and everyone who is connected with Michael feels a sense of pride, the same way we do with every successful academy graduate.

"He deserved his moment, he has worked very hard and is an incredible threat with his pace!

“It was nearly a fairytale ending for him, with that chance against Spurs. It is getting harder to progress on to first team level here, because it is so competitive, but it proves that the pathway is still there and that if you’re good enough, at this club, you’ll be afforded your chance.”
