Hesketh and Slattery secure Southampton victory

Show/hide article…

Jake Hesketh and Callum Slattery scored to give Southampton their first win in eight Division 2 matches, beating Stoke City 2-0 at St George’s Park.

Slattery could have put the visitors ahead just before half-time but had a penalty saved by Stoke goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard.

But Hesketh gave Southampton an early second-half lead with a shot from 20 yards and Slattery made amends four minutes later.

Southampton stay ninth in the Division 2 table, nine points outside the play-off places. Stoke are 11th and winless in six matches.

Southampton v Brighton & Hove Albion preview: Leonardo Ulloa available for debut

Show/hide article…

Leonardo Ulloa is fit and available for Brighton’s trip to Southampton after re-joining the club on loan from Leicester City, three-and-a-half years after leaving the Amex.

Chris Hughton has no worries about the striker’s fitness despite the fact he has only featured for 19 minutes in the Premier League this season.

“He’s in the squad and we are happy with his levels,” said Hughton at his pre-match press conference.

"We have found it difficult to get the goals we need to win games, so to have that competition and options in that position is definitely something we wanted.

"We know the type of player he is and what he will bring to the squad. He has gained great experience in the last few years in the games he has been involved with.

“We want him to bring that quality and experience to us.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has played down reports linking Manolo Gabbiadini with a January move to Bologna saying he wants to keep the Italian striker.

Pellegrino has also described the club’s connection with Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes as “speculation”, but he is focused on securing three points against the Seagulls.

He said on the transfer links: "We have been working on many players, to bring players with quality. With two days left, it’s not easy.

“The most important thing right now is belief in the dressing room that we are growing as a team, and learning and improving in all different aspects.”

Southampton will make a late decision on whether to select Ryan Bertrand and Guido Carrillo but despite Charlie Austin returning to training, the game comes too soon for him following his hamstring problem.

Maya Yoshida is fit again after overcoming a hamstring injury while Shane Long has shrugged off an illness to feature.

Brighton’s club-record signing Jurgen Locadia will have to wait a little bit longer to make his debut as he remains absent due to a hamstring injury. The Dutchman should return to training next week, though.

The Seagulls are waiting to discover the extent of the ankle injury suffered by winger Jiri Skalak against Middlesbrough at the weekend.

Southampton have produced some good performances in the last couple of weeks. It’s been much better from Mauricio Pellegrino’s side but they are still in the bottom three. They desperately need a result here but it won’t be easy against Brighton.

Chris Hughton’s side were beaten 4-0 by Chelsea but I thought they were very unlucky in that game. It certainly wasn’t a 4-0 game.

The pressure is fully on Southampton in this game. If they don’t get a result the manager will be under severe pressure. It’s okay winning in the cup but when you are in the bottom three you need Premier League wins and that’s not easy, but I’m backing Southampton, with home advantage, to use their experience to pick up victory.

Southampton vs Brighton: Team news, kick-off time, likely line-ups

Show/hide article…

Ahead of the Premier League’s weekend action, Sportsmail will be providing you with team news, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all you need to know as Southampton take on Brighton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

Guido Carrillo could make his Premier League debut for Southampton when they host Brighton on Wednesday night.

The striker, signed from Monaco last week, came on as a late substitute in the FA Cup win over Watford but is now pushing for a start despite not being completely match-fit.

Ryan Bertrand (hamstring) was withdrawn during the victory over the Hornets but could feature, while Charlie Austin is back in training although not ready for a return following his own hamstring issue.

Leonardo Ulloa is in contention to make his second Brighton debut at Southampton after rejoining on loan from Leicester.

Fellow new signing Jurgen Locadia is still recovering from a hamstring injury but should begin training next week.

The Seagulls are waiting to discover the extent of the ankle injury suffered by winger Jiri Skalak against Middlesbrough at the weekend.

After winning two of their first three top-flight clashes against Brighton, Southampton have won just one of the last six (D3 L2).

Brighton have failed to score in their last two away league trips to Southampton, they last went three in a row without scoring there in November 1953.

Southampton have only lost one of their last 27 Premier League home games against newly promoted teams (W17 D9) and are unbeaten in each of the last 11.

Brighton are yet to score in their three previous Premier League midweek games (Tuesday and Wednesday), drawing 0-0 with Crystal Palace and losing 2-0 against both Tottenham and Chelsea.

Saints are winless in their last 11 Premier League games (D6 L5), just one short of their longest ever winless run in the competition (12 games ending March 1995).

The Seagulls have scored fewer away goals than any other Premier League side this season (5), failing to score in nine of their 12 games on the road this season, including each of the last six.

Southampton have scored in each of their last six Premier League home games, netting nine goals in total. Their previous nine at St Mary’s in the competition had come over a period of 14 games.

Indeed, Saints have also conceded in each of those six games – only once in the Premier League have they had a longer run of both scoring and conceding in home games (8 games between February and August 2016).

Saints have dropped a league-high nine points from leading positions in Premier League home games this season.

Pascal Gross has had a hand in 53% of Brighton’s 17 Premier League goals this season (4 goals, 5 assists), the highest ratio in the division.

Who is the Premier League’s best player outside the top six?

Show/hide article…

Who is the Premier League’s best player outside the top six?

Who is the best player from outside the Premier League’s top six?

With 10 goals apiece, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy and Everton’s Wayne Rooney are the highest goalscorers outside the top six, while eighth-placed Burnley have kept 10 clean sheets this season.

There are plenty of other candidates making strong cases on our shortlist - which you can vote on at the bottom of the page - but here’s who Soccer Saturday pundits Paul Merson, Matt Le Tissier, Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas have picked…

"I think Wilfried Zaha could play for any of the Premier League’s top-six clubs. He had an early go at Manchester United but I think that opportunity came too early for him.

"I really like watching him play. He’s an excellent player and the pace and trickery he has at his disposal can be a real handful for any team in the Premier League. He’s got to add a few more goals to his game but he can do something out of the ordinary to change a game.

“United saw something in him a few years ago but I think he’s definitely got better now. If he had another chance at the top level he would not let anybody down.”

"I’d say Riyad Mahrez is somewhere back to near the form of his title-winning season, with eight goals and seven assists representing a pretty decent return so far this season.

"When you consider he’s only had a couple of seasons in the Premier League and he’s 26, you’d think there’s still more to come from him as well.

“Someone else I have been impressed with, except for the somewhat dodgy handball against Southampton, is Abdoulaye Doucoure for Watford, with six legitimate goals to his name this season.”

"Wilfried Zaha has been the most consistent and has single-handedly dragged his side out of the relegation zone, so he gets the nod for me.

“Mahrez has had his moments but I wouldn’t say he’s had as much of an impact. As for a defender, I’d probably say Ben Mee, who has had a fantastic season.”

"He’s not been playing brilliantly this season but I am a big fan of Gylfi Sigurdsson. I’m picking him on the reasons why he became a £40m player and I do like that type of creative player.

"I think Sam Allardyce is starting to understand his formation and shape and you can see Wayne Rooney is starting to get left out, so I can see Sigurdsson as his long-term No 10, especially with their mutual love for set-pieces.

“Ruben Loftus-Cheek is another player who I like and is a real talent but for the life of me I can’t understand why he has not kicked on yet.”

Who do you think is the best player outside the top six? Have your say below…

Pellegrino: Composure the key against Seagulls

Show/hide article…

The Southampton boss is under no illusions as to the importance of Wednesday night’s return to Premier League action but is keen to see his side play with “patience and calm” for the visit of the Seagulls.

While a positive result could go a long way to moving Saints clear of the relegation zone, another improved performance remains the priority for Pellegrino.

“There are two important matches this week but we have to think about the first one,” he said. “Even if we beat Brighton, there will still be lots to improve on in the future, we have to keep going and keep winning.

“Yes, it’s a big match but there will be others. We don’t need just these three points, we need to be patient and consistent. We are on the right path and moving forwards."

Key to a result in midweek will be a further improvement on recent showings against Tottenham and Watford and both results have had a visible effect on the Saints dressing room.

“When we are at home, the opponent has to feel that we want to win. We have to put them under pressure and show them quickly that we can take control of the game.

“The feeling now in the dressing room now is that we are growing, we’ve been working very hard in a difficult situation but the spirit and the character of the players has taken a step forwards.

“In defence and attack, on the pitch, off the pitch, our commitment and focus on every detail in training; hopefully this can be the base for the future.”

October’s meeting at the Amex Stadium ended in a stalemate after Glenn Murray’s headed equaliser cancelled out Steven Davis’ early strike and Pellegrino is expecting another tightly contested affair this time around at St Mary’s.

“Brighton are a good team; they have been working with the same manager for a long time and so have a very good understanding all over the field. This is the Premier League, every single game is tough.”

Transfer news: Southampton running out of time to sign Spartak Moscow star Quincy Promes

Show/hide article…

Southampton are in a race against time to sign Spartak Moscow star Quincy Promes before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

It is understood the Saints’ attempts to land the Netherlands international is being met by resistance from the Russian club.

With the coffers swelled by the recent record-breaking £75million sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, struggling Saints are attempting to strengthen their squad before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

Monaco striker Guido Carrillo has already arrived this month for a club-record fee and Mauricio Pellegrino would like to bolster his struggling side’s attack further with Promes.

The 26-year-old is understood to be interested in a move to St Mary’s, but negotiations are proving tough due to Spartak’s understandable reluctance to sell their star turn.

Promes is currently in Marbella with the Russian team at a training camp, with a friendly scheduled against Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia on Wednesday.

Time is running out for Saints to sign the attacker as Pellegrino looks to improve his side.

Asked about the possibility of movement before the window shuts, the Southampton boss said: "It’s possible. It’s probable.

"We never know but we have got some interest that maybe some of our players can go on loan but depends on the other club too.

"In the middle of negotiations there are money and budgets and after in the opposite way the same.

“We want to bring a player but it is difficult for us.”

Southampton v Brighton & Hove Albion

Show/hide article…

Southampton new signing Guido Carrillo is set to make his Premier League debut after a brief substitute appearance in the FA Cup at the weekend.

Brighton are likely to include Argentine striker Leanardo Ulloa, who has rejoined the club on loan.

Record signing Jurgen Locadia is still out with a hamstring injury, whilst Jiri Skalak is doubtful after suffering an ankle problem in the FA Cup.

John Roder: "This match is huge, with out-of-form teams Southampton and Brighton both needing an improvement in their Premier League form to move away from the relegation zone.

"Southampton are without a league victory since the end of November, whilst Brighton have won only one league game since they took three points at Swansea in early November.

"Glenn Murray’s goal at the Liberty Stadium was Brighton’s last in an away game, and one of only five they’ve managed on their travels all season.

“Both teams won in the FA Cup on Saturday and will hope that provides the boost they desperately need in their battle for Premier League survival.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "There are two important matches this week but we have to think about the first one. Even if we beat Brighton, there will still be lots to improve on in the future, we have to keep going and keep winning.

"Brighton are a good team; they have been working with the same manager for a long time and so have a very good understanding all over the field.

“This is the Premier League, every single game is tough.”

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton: "They (Southampton) have a lot of offensive options, they play a very good brand of football and they have a lot of quality.

"It’s a surprise they haven’t won the number of games their quality allows them to, but that’s the level of competition in this league. Looking at their performances, they’ve been very close in a lot of games.

“It makes it a very difficult game, particularly away from home. They’ll be quite strong at home, so we have to be very guarded.”

Both these sides were in the top 12 the last time this south coast derby took place, in October, but they are both in a relegation battle now.

It ended all-square at the Amex Stadium but I fancy Saints to take the points this time.
