Manchester City v Southampton: Team news, kick-off and likely line-ups

Show/hide article…

Ahead of the Premier League’s midweek action, Sportsmail will be providing you with team news, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all you need to know as Manchester City host Southampton.

The Saints will welcome central midfielder Oriol Romeu back from suspension for Wednesday’s trip to the Premier League leaders.

The Spaniard sat out Sunday’s 4-1 success over Everton after being handed a one-game ban for picking up five yellow cards.

Fellow midfielder Mario Lemina returned from an ankle problem as a second-half substitute against the Toffees and came through unscathed, but defender Matt Targett (leg) remains sidelined.

o Manchester City are unbeaten in seven home games against Southampton in all competitions, winning six (D1), after losing three in a row prior to this run.

o Southampton have collected one point in their last six Premier League visits to the Etihad Stadium (W0 D1 L5), doing so in their 1-1 draw there last season.

o Manchester City have won 37 points from their 13 matches this season – the best-ever points total by a team at this stage of a Premier League campaign.

o On the day of this match, Manchester City will have been top of the Premier League for 74 days this season – just one day fewer than they spent top in the entirety of last season.

o Manchester City have scored 24 Premier League goals at home this season, double the number they’d scored after six home matches last season (12).

o Saints striker Charlie Austin has had a hand in eight goals in his last 11 Premier League starts (seven goals, one assist), although he hasn’t started back to back Premier League matches since December 2016.

o Sergio Aguero has had a hand in five goals in his last six Premier League appearances v Southampton (three goals, two assists).

o Aguero has now scored in six successive Premier League appearances (eight goals) and has assisted three more goals during this run for Manchester City.

o Raheem Sterling has scored 12 goals in 18 appearances for Manchester City this season; his best-ever goal return in a single club season (all comps).

o Only versus Aston Villa (six) has Shane Long scored more Premier League goals than versus Manchester City (four). The Irishman has found the net in each of his last two starts against the Citizens in the Premier League.

Morata and Hazard pose FPL captaincy dilemma

Show/hide article…

Choosing between Alvaro Morata (£10.6m) and Eden Hazard (£10.7m) for Gameweek 14 is one of the toughest captaincy decisions Fantasy Premier League managers will face this season.

The Chelsea pair take outstanding form into their home meeting with Swansea City.

Morata has two goals and two assists in his last four matches and has been acquired by more than 285,000 managers ahead of tonight’s 18:45 GMT deadline.

He has also produced double-figure scores twice at Stamford Bridge.

On the other hand, Hazard has returned 40 points over the last four Gameweeks to earn 125,000 new owners this week.

Last season, the Belgian scored 12 of his 16 goals at home - more than any midfielder - and is likely to be on penalties.

One of Harry Kane (£12.8m) or Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) has been the most popular captaincy pick in each of the first 13 Gameweeks.

But this supremacy will surely be challenged by the Chelsea pair.

Kane travels to Leicester City after his ninth goal of the season against West Bromwich Albion in Gameweek 13.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker has scored braces in three away matches, with the most shots on target (11) of any player on the road.

He will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s fixture, when he scored four goals and got an assist at King Power Stadium.

With only one goal in the past six Gameweeks, Lukaku has suffered the most sales (268,000+) ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Watford.

Only Crystal Palace and Everton (both 12) have conceded more than the 11 Watford have let in at Vicarage Road.

But Marco Silva’s switch to a three-man defence has delivered back-to-back clean sheets going into tonight’s match.

Mohamed Salah (£9.7m) goes to Stoke City as the top-scoring player in FPL after his 10th goal of the season against Chelsea in Gameweek 13.

The Liverpool midfielder boasts the most shots (18) and most shots on target (10) in the last four Gameweeks and will face a Stoke defence who have conceded 26 goals, a figure exceeded only by Everton (28) .

A home meeting with Huddersfield Town promotes Alexis Sanchez (£11.8m) as a differential for captain.

Part of a mere 2.8% of squads, the Arsenal midfielder has three goals in his last five Gameweek appearances and faces a Huddersfield side who have conceded nine times in their past three away fixtures and are without a goal on the road since Gameweek 1.

That away record could even allow Sead Kolasinac (£6.1m) to profit. The defender has averaged 8.0 points per match (ppm) at home.

And despite concerns of rotation in the Manchester City attack, Leroy Sane (£9.0m) remains a strong armband candidate for the visit of Southampton.

The German has started each of the past eight Gameweeks and has produced 10+ points in four of his last five home appearances.

Mauricio Pellegrino surprised by Pep Guardiola’s success as a club manager

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted he did not expect former team-mate Pep Guardiola to be so successful as a manager.

The pair, who won La Liga with Barcelona during the 1998/99 season, will be in opposing dugouts on Wednesday evening when Pellegrino’s Southampton attempt to end the unbeaten record of Guardiola’s Premier League leaders, Manchester City.

While Pellegrino has yet to lift silverware as a coach at Valencia and Alaves, Guardiola has an extensive collection, winning three Spanish league titles, three Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies during prosperous spells in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

“I never imagined that he can achieve something like he did,” said Pellegrino, who joined Barca on a season-long loan from Argentinian club Velez Sarsfield.

"But obviously as soon as I arrived, Pep was one of these type of players always looking for new ideas, asking how we were training in Argentina, in different places.

“And also he had a good reading on the pitch and it’s something that after (he finished playing) he translated much better outside of the pitch.”

Barca’s 1999 title success proved to be the final of Guardiola’s six La Liga wins as a player with the Catalan club, before he moved on to Italian sides Brescia and Roma ahead of eventually hanging up his boots following brief spells in Qatar and Mexico.

Pellegrino retains fond memories of his single campaign playing with Guardiola at the Nou Camp under manager Louis van Gaal.

“We were team-mates and I think we had a beautiful moment together,” Pellegrino added.

"We won the league, for me this experience in Barcelona was really good because I discovered a lot of things in European football.

“My career in Europe started in Barcelona, I’ve always got nice memories of this moment.”

THE MATCH

Manchester City v Southampton

Wednesday 29th November, 8pm GMT

Etihad Stadium

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints recorded an impressive victory over Everton at the weekend, netting four goals for the first time in the 2017/18 campaign.

The St Mary’s faithful were rewarded with a number of exciting performances, none more so than 22-year-old Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, whose industry and efficiency was unmatched on his first Premier League start of the season.

Another standout performer was two goal striker Charlie Austin, who has now had a hand in eight goals in his past 11 Premier League starts. Saints consequently climbed in to 10th, level on points (16) with Brighton.

Undoubtedly the division’s most elegant passing outfit, the blue side of Manchester is beginning to establish an impregnable advantage over their red shirted rivals.

Pep Guardiola’s side proved that they have the spirit to match their aptitude after overturning a 1-0 deficit at Huddersfield on Sunday, emerging 2-1 victors.

City’s unbeaten league record is still in tact and they have consequently opened up an eight point gap at the head of the table.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Mario Lemina made a 12 minute cameo appearance at the weekend as he continues his return to fitness, while midfield partner Oriol Romeu has now served his one match suspension.

Both are available for the trip to Manchester.

Manchester City: John Stones and Benjamin Mendy will both miss out through injury.

Captain Vincent Kompany could be rested as he manages his return to fitness after a long injury lay-off.

TOP PERFORMERS

Steven Davis and Charlie Austin both took their league tally to three goals apiece at the weekend, while Ryan Bertrand chipped in with two well-worked assists.

Prior to Austin’s double against Everton, the last Southampton striker to score two headed goals in a Premier League game was James Beattie, back in 2002. The 28-year-old also has the best minutes-to-goals ratio of any player at the club this season.

Top scorers: Manolo Gabbiadini (3), Steven Davis (3), Charlie Austin (3)

Most assists: Nathan Redmond (2), Ryan Bertrand (2)

Manchester City’s all time top goalscorer, Sergio Agüero has now scored in six successive Premier League appearances (eight goals) and has assisted three more to boot, during a characteristically prolific run of recent form.

Ex-Liverpool man Raheem Sterling is also enjoying a fruitful spell, having scored 12 goals in 18 appearances for City this season; his best ever goal return in a single club season (all comps).

Top scorers: Sergio Agüero (9), Gabriel Jesus (8), Raheem Sterling (8)

Most assists: David Silva (8), Kevin De Bruyne (6), Leroy Sané (6)

DID YOU KNOW?

Only versus Aston Villa (6) has Shane Long scored more Premier League goals than versus Manchester City (4). The Irishman has found the net in each of his last two starts against the Citizens in the Premier League.

Manchester City have won 37 points from their 13 matches this season – the best-ever points total by a team at this stage of a Premier League campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s success shocks Southampton boss

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted he did not expect former team-mate Pep Guardiola to be so successful as a manager.

The pair, who won the La Liga title playing alongside each other at Barcelona during the 1998-99 season, will be in opposing dugouts on Wednesday evening when Pellegrino’s Southampton attempt to end the unbeaten record of Guardiola’s Premier League leaders Manchester City.

While Pellegrino has yet to lift silverware as a coach, Guardiola has an extensive medal collection, picking up three Spanish league titles, three Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies during prosperous spells in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Barca’s 1999 title success proved to be the final of Guardiola’s six La Liga wins as a player with the Catalan club before he moved on to Italian sides Brescia and Roma before eventually hanging up his boots following brief spells in Qatar and Mexico.

For Pellegrino it was his introduction to European football and he went on to enjoy a productive six-year stay at Valencia, winning two league titles and the 2004 UEFA Cup, as well as playing in two Champions League finals.

The 46-year-old former centre-back retains fond memories of his single campaign playing with Guardiola at the Nou Camp under manager Louis van Gaal.

‘We were team-mates and I think we had a beautiful moment together,’ Pellegrino added.

'We won the league, for me this experience in Barcelona was really good because I discovered a lot of things in European football.

Pep Guardiola hints at rotating Manchester City side ahead of busy festive schedule

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola has hinted he will rotate his Manchester City team with the busy festive schedule and the Manchester derby on the horizon, while insisting Raheem Sterling still needs to improve despite his winner in the hard-fought win over Huddersfield on Sunday.

City were made to work as hard as they have done all season on their trip to Yorkshire where they fought back from 1-0 down to nick three points and maintain their eight-point lead at the top.

Sterling was instrumental in that turnaround as he won the penalty just after the half-time break which saw Sergio Aguero draw them level before Gabriel Jesus’ shot was deflected into the winger to score the winner.

But Guardiola has urged caution on Sterling and insisted that he is still learning, while talking up the chances of those who weren’t involved against Huddersfield facing Southampton on Wednesday night.

“The way we want to play as a team helps individual performances,” Guardiola said. “Like I said many times, Sterling is still young and there are a lot of things he can do better.

“Not just Raheem, yesterday in training the players who didn’t play against Huddersfield trained amazing. For all of the players, including those who do not play regularly, I am so happy with their behaviour in training sessions.”

With the hamstring injury to John Stones keeping him out at the moment, Guardiola also stressed the importance of Eliaquim Mangala, who has only featured six times during the season, over the festive period, with City due to play nine times in the month of December.

“Mangala is a player for us and is going to stay here” he added. “In the winter break and the summer break we are going to ask everyone if they are happy or not.”

Manchester City v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Eliaquim Mangala could replace Vincent Kompany if Manchester City opt to rotate their squad, while Gabriel Jesus is also likely to be recalled.

Fernandinho and Leroy Sane are both one booking away from a ban, while Benjamin Mendy and John Stones remain sidelined.

Mario Lemina is again set to feature after showing no ill-effects on his comeback from an ankle injury at the weekend but Matt Targett remains out.

Steve Bower: "The ‘record breakers’ have another landmark in their sight. Never in Manchester City’s history have they won 12 league games in a row as Southampton attempt to do something only Everton have achieved so far this season, and put the brakes on City’s seemingly runaway train.

“You can understand why Pep Guardiola cited the weekend win at Huddersfield as their most important so far and Mauricio Pellegrino can only hope that the leaders need to show those battling qualities and character again.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Mauricio Pellegrino: "What I saw of Southampton this season, I saw many things. And he made an amazing job at Alaves last season.

“We were together one or two seasons. It was an amazing experience. We were all the time together. He was so curious about football. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen him. Tomorrow will be an opportunity after the game to speak a little bit.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "The Everton game can help us to play with more confidence, especially at home where I think we’ve been unfortunate at times. We must build on that brilliant result now against Manchester City.

“Pep Guardiola and I won the league together at Barcelona. It was a beautiful moment in my career. He deserves admiration for his results. Everyone can learn from him at the moment.”
