Tadić hails superb team display

Show/hide article…

Tadić fired Saints in front, and despite a setback when Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised shortly before the break, Pellegrino’s men turned in a scintillating second-half display to secure a precious three points.

“It’s a very important three points. We played a good game and also got rewarded with goals,” Tadić reflected.

“We have made our fans happy as well as ourselves. This is how Southampton should play.

“It was very nice after a nice ball from Ryan for my goal. But we played very well as a team, defending and attacking together. This is a crucial thing because then everyone can show their qualities.

“We always showed energy and we didn’t fall down when bad things happened. In the past during those moments we did that but we pushed ourselves, showed character and that was important.”

Southampton 4-1 Everton: Charlie Austin’s double downs dour Toffees

Show/hide article…

Managerless Everton suffered further misery as Charlie Austin’s brace for Southampton condemned them to a 4-1 defeat at St Mary’s.

Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino finally handed Austin a chance from the start and he repaid the new-found faith shown in him by converting two second-half headers, with a late Steven Davis effort completing the scoring.

Dusan Tadic had put the hosts ahead only for David Unsworth’s Everton, showing eight changes to the side humbled 5-1 by Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday, to level in spectacular style through Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Austin had not scored a league goal in open play in almost a year, netting the only goal in victory over the Toffees at St Mary’s 364 days ago.

But Pellegrino picked him ahead of Manolo Gabbiadini as Southampton finally found their form in front of goal, having hit just nine goals in their previous 12 league games heading into this game.

Everton were as bad as their form and league position of 16th suggests, Sigurdsson’s strike a standalone moment of class on another afternoon of anguish for caretaker boss Unsworth.

Austin blazed high and wide when stretching for a chance inside the box as Saints looked to take advantage of Everton’s fragile confidence by striking early.

The visitors were gifted their first opportunity as Tadic presented the ball to Aaron Lennon, who ran at the Southampton defence with the ball eventually finding its way through to Kevin Mirallas with the Belgium international shooting wide.

Chances were being created at both ends as Cedric Soares stole in ahead of Sigurdsson to cross in to Austin, who this time saw his shot whistle past the post.

Mirallas was again the beneficiary of a defensive mix-up by the hosts but this time goalkeeper Fraser Forster burst from his line to clear away before the forward could strike.

The next attack brought the game’s first goal as Tadic beat Phil Jagielka to Ryan Bertrand’s cross and held off the England international before guiding the ball home past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Southampton slowly took control of the contest without truly testing Pickford, although Virgil van Dijk headed wide five minutes before the break when he should have done better.

Everton made them pay for not putting the game to bed as Sigurdsson bent a superb long-range effort over Forster, off the crossbar and both posts before it crossed the line to draw the visitors level on the stroke of half-time.

Southampton needed just seven second-half minutes to regain their advantage as Austin headed home Bertrand’s cross, his effort hitting the bar - in the same place as Sigurdsson’s strike - before bouncing over Pickford’s line.

Austin repeated the feat six minutes later, arriving free in the Everton box to nod Tadic’s cross home and put space between the sides.

Only a superb stop from Pickford prevented Shane Long, on for Austin, adding a fourth before Davis obliged with an angled finish from the edge of the box.

Everton have now shipped 20 goals in Unsworth’s seven games at the helm and have the worst defensive record in the top flight as Wednesday’s visit of fellow strugglers West Ham takes on even greater importance.

Charlie Austin calls on Southampton team-mates to build on Everton win

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin has urged his Southampton team-mates to build on Sunday’s 4-1 Premier League triumph over Everton.

The 28-year-old forward was handed a first league start of the season by manager Mauricio Pellegrino at St Mary’s.

He repaid the new-found faith shown in him by converting two second-half headers, which sealed victory for the Saints.

Austin told Sky Sports Premier League: 'I’m pleased with my two goals but the overall performance of the lads, we really needed that. It was nice to do that in front of our own fans, more importantly get three points, and I think that puts us up into the top half of the table.

‘(The fans) can get behind us now. I know they’ve been a bit worried - and so have we, it’s not just been them. Let’s just push forward, get them right behind us now and let’s go on a little run because we’ve got a run coming up over Christmas and we’re going to need everybody going in the same direction.’

The south-coast club face Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham between now and Boxing Day.

Dusan Tadic had put the hosts ahead on Sunday afternoon only for David Unsworth’s Everton, showing eight changes from the side humbled 5-1 by Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday, to level in spectacular style through Gylfi Sigurdsson.

A late Steven Davis effort completed the scoring after Austin’s double for Saints, who had hit just nine goals in their previous 12 league games heading into this match.

Austin had not scored a league goal in open play in almost a year, netting the only goal in a home triumph over the Toffees 364 days ago.

Asked if he had had a point to prove, he said: ‘You could say so. But for me it was all about biding my time on the training pitch. Today I got my reward, and more importantly we got the three points.’

Pellegrino: My players and the club deserved this win

Show/hide article…

The Serb opened Saints’ account, before Charlie Austin contributed a second-half brace and captain Steven Davis rounded off the scoring, capping a fine display by the home side.

Austin’s double means he has had a hand in eight goals in his past 11 Premier League starts and Pellegrino admitted he was pleased with the striker’s impact.

“I was really pleased for my players because we have been working really well and I think we deserved to win,” the manager began.

"Sometimes it has been frustrating when we’ve been unable to convert good performances to victories, but today we played a really good game.

"Especially in the second-half, after [Everton] equalised, the team continued the same ideas to play with tempo, with the ball on the floor and we scored four good goals.

"Dušan is a person who is always working really hard, he’s got the character to always be asking for the ball. The goal is something that completes an offensive player, so really happy.

“Pleased for Charlie, really happy with his goals. Also for Pierre [Højbjerg] because when you come from the bench it is difficult to be at the same level. He is really young, but we have young players with capacity and quality here.”

Charlie Austin delighted after double for Southampton against Everton

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin admitted he had a point to prove to Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino after scoring twice in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Everton.

The striker’s previous eight Premier League appearances this season had all been as a substitute, but he took advantage of a rare start as he headed home Saints’ second and third goals and picked up the Man of the Match award.

Austin has been behind both Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini in the pecking order at Southampton, but could not hide his delight after the stunning Super Sunday win.

When asked if he felt he had a point to prove, he told Sky Sports: "You could say so.

"For me, it was all about biding my time, working hard on the training pitch and today I got my rewards. More importantly we got the three points.

"We’ve got quality down both flanks. In the first half I hit the post from Cedric and I scored from two good balls from the left-hand side.

"We’ve got quality in the side, we just need to put the puzzle together now. Today we did it and that could be the first step going forward.

"It’s the first 80 minutes I’ve played since Stoke in the first game of last season and I was blowing the cobwebs off my legs.

“I was delighted to get my first start of the season. I’m pushing forward now and can only look forward.”

Pellegrino said Austin got the nod up front on Sunday after improving his work on the training pitch.

Sunday’s win lifted Southampton into the top half of the Premier League and the manager said all of the club’s forwards need to hit top form as they seek to climb the table.

“It’s really important for us because we need all of them,” Pellegrino told Sky Sports.

“I felt that Charlie was training much better than before. He had the opportunity, scored two goals and did really well for him and really good for us.”

He later added in his press conference: "I decided to choose another XI, I decided other team-mates were better for those games or occasions.

"He has trained much, much better in the last few weeks and I think he deserved his chance. You have to be ready because you never know when the manager will need you to be ready.

“Sure, I spoke with most of them but when the manager chooses 11 players it is because I feel in that moment they are right to play on that day.”

Southampton 4-1 Everton: Pellegrino reveals why he played goal hero Austin

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin’s renewed determination in training convinced Mauricio Pellegrino to give him what proved to be a match winning start against Everton.

The striker hadn’t scored a goal from open play for 364 days before his double at St Mary’s helped Saints to an important 4-1 win over the Toffees.

While there had been a clamour for Austin to be involved for some weeks, Pellegrino had previously resisted.

Austin cut a frustrated figure due to his lack of opportunities, but Pellegrino revealed just what had changed.

Pellegrino said: “I chose another 11 and felt other team-mates were better for these occasions, but Charlie has been training much better in last few weeks. I felt this and I think he deserved his chance and did well and this is the most important for us.

“Sometimes when you are not playing you are a little bit disappointed and it’s something we have to learn when we have a squad of 25 players.

“It’s very difficult to keep going and training every single day when don’t play and only play once a week like now.

“Last season Southampton play Europa League and arrive to the Cup final, they are used to playing more games.

“Some were disappointed at beginning but now they realise that the team needs them and you have to take responsibility for yourself and be ready because you never know when the manager might say it’s your moment. You have to be ready.”

Pellegrino confirmed he had spoken with Austin about his lack of first team chances this season, and felt the time was right to give him a go against Everton.

“I spoke with most of them but when the manager chooses 11, that’s because I feel they’re the best on that day,” insisted Pellegrino.

“In football nothing is fixed. Next week it will change again but for the manager to manage the mentality of 25 players is not easy.

“You are happy when you are playing but the other 14 players you have to be behind them, support them.

“Most play in reserve games but training every week and maybe the opportunities is not coming is sometimes frustrating.”

Austin certainly put in the performance of a player who felt he had a point to prove to the manager, and two goals in six second half minutes underlined his value.

“When you have the opportunity you have to show why the manager gave you the opportunity,” reckoned the Saints boss.

“To be in Premier League, to be in Southampton, all have talent and quality. If not it’s impossible.

“I want to feel from my players they are involved, they are committed in our values as a club and as a team and to translate to the people that we want to play with ambition and that’s something we want to translate.”

Austin’s delight after Everton brace

Show/hide article…

Austin’s pair of second-half headers added to an early opener from Dušan Tadić and a late fourth from Steven Davis.

The striker was quick to praise the service from his teammates, having taken his chance to impress manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

“We knew we’d had the better of the first half and we just went out all guns blazing and killed the game off,” Austin said.

“I said to the lads ‘just whip it into the front post and I’ll be there – if not, that’s on me’.

“In the second half they were two great balls from Berty and Dušan. I’m delighted to get the two goals – it’s massive for me and I’m really pleased for myself.

“I’ve had to wait patiently and work hard on the training pitch to give the manager some questions, which is what I’ve done over the past two or three weeks.

“I was rewarded with a start today and I’ve rewarded him with two goals.

“It’s not just me – that was a massive performance from everybody involved.”

Southampton 4-1 Everton: Austin at the double as Saints hit back

Show/hide article…

Saints bounced back from their hammering at Liverpool with a crushing 4-1 win over managerless Everton.

Jaïdi pleased by free-scoring Saints

Show/hide article…

An eye-catching brace for Jake Hesketh and a well-taken drive from Johnathan Afolabi had put Saints first 2-0 and then 3-1 up at Heritage Park only for Premier League 2 leaders Middlesbrough to twice fight back to set up a draw.

Today’s game took Southampton’s goal tally to six for the week after Monday’s 3-4 defeat to Fulham, an attacking instinct that had Jaïdi praising his players at full-time here.

"We always score goals, so that is the main positive to take out of today. It’s not easy to go to Middlesborough, score three times and really impose yourselves on the game.

“Jake Hesketh has been doing very well since joining us after his injury. His brace today showed that he is well on the way to getting back to his level. I hope he can keep moving forwards and the younger guys can learn from him in the next few games.”

A greater attention to detail and management of the closing stages of the game prevented his side from snatching what would have been a well-derserved three points but the U23s boss is confident his charges will mentally improve with time.

“We played very well here today but I think the boys need to learn more about decision making and when to play and how to manage the game. This kind of thing will take time with the younger boys”.
