Which Premier League players are nearly out of contract?

With the summer transfer window approaching, we list the Premier League players whose contracts are expiring.

Plenty of big-name stars could be leaving the Premier League this summer, including Yaya Toure, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and John Terry, while some clubs are facing a big restructure at the end of the season.

Crystal Palace have a total of nine players out of contract in the summer, followed by Sunderland, Manchester City and Stoke, who all have six players with just three months left on their deals.

Though Arsenal have just the contracts of Santi Cazorla and Yaya Sanogo expiring this summer - the Spain international is expected to trigger a one-year extension - they face the prospect of several high-profile departures in the summer of 2018.

Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are two players the Gunners will be desperate to keep, while they have big decisions to make over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey, Kieran Gibbs and Per Mertesacker.

Jose Mourinho has a similar situation at Manchester United; key players Ibrahimovic and Michael Carrick are contracted until the summer, while first-team players Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Juan Mata, Antonio Valencia, Jesse Lingard and Luke Shaw see their deals end in 2018.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham have a small handful of players to tie down before the summer of 2018, and elsewhere throughout the Premier League, speculation is sure to be rife around Michael Keane, Harry Maguire, Andrew Robertson and Andre Gray.

Glen Johnson (one further year option), Charlie Adam (one further year option), Phil Bardsley, Stephen Ireland, Shay Given, Daniel Bachmann (one further year option)

Adrian (club option to extend for two years), Alvaro Arbeloa

Best of the rest up in summer of 2017

Best of the rest in the Premier League

Chelsea target Van Dijk could miss rest of Southampton season

Show/hide article…

Chelsea target Virgil van Dijk might not play another game for Southampton this season after being ruled out with an ankle injury.

The Dutch centre-back, who is also of interest to Liverpool, has not featured for Southampton since January’s 3-0 win over Leicester, where he damaged ligaments in his ankle.

“It’s a long injury. We will see if he comes back before the end of the season,” Southampton manager Claude Puel said at his press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Bournemouth.

Van Dijk, 25, has established himself as one of the league’s top centre-backs since joining Southampton from Celtic in the summer of 2015.

That has put him on the radar of both Chelsea and Liverpool but Southampton would demand a fee in the region of £50million for the Dutch international.

Should Van Dijk depart Southampton are reported to be interested in Mamadou Sakho as his replacement. The Liverpool centre-back is currently excelling on loan at Crystal Palace.

Virgil van Dijk’s Southampton season in doubt, Claude Puel says

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk’s season could be over, according to Southampton manager Claude Puel.

The Saints captain has not played since injuring an ankle during a January 22 Premier League game against Leicester.

Puel said at the start of February he expected Van Dijk to miss “two or three months”, but that timescale has apparently been revised.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Bournemouth Puel said: “It’s a long injury. We will see if he comes back before end of season. It’s a long injury for him.”

The Frenchman went on to describe his centre-half as “the best defender in the Premier League” and said the latest injury bulletin would have no bearing on whether he leaves in the summer.

St Mary’s director Les Reed warned off potential suitors in January amid reports of interest from Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton.

And Puel said: "The injury doesn’t change anything. He is important player. He is captain and it’s important he takes his role with good attitude. It’s a new role for him and he needs to show experience and maturity and improve with us.

“We know he’s a good player, the best defender in the Premier League, but playing with us will give him quality for the future.”

Manolo Gabbiadini will miss the Bournemouth game and Charlie Austin is three weeks away from returning, according to Puel, who said he had spoken to Dusan Tadic about comments made in the press earlier this month.

Tadic said it was “unbelievable” he had been substituted during Saints’ defeat at Tottenham.

“We have sorted it internally with calm,” Puel said. “He knows it was not a good response. It’s always better to give an answer on the pitch and not outside.”

Sky customers can now upgrade to Sky Sports and get 12 months for just £18 per month. Upgrade now!

Gabbiadini ruled out of Cherries match

Show/hide article…

MANOLO Gabbiadini has been ruled out of Saints’ Premier League game against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday with injury.

The in-form Italian, who has netted six goals in five appearances since his £14m January move from Napoli, limped out of Saints’ 2-1 defeat to Tottenham last time out.

It was later revealed that he had picked up a groin strain and subsequently pulled out of the Italy squad to stay at St Mary’s to recover.

But Claude Puel today announced that the 25-year-old had not regained full fitness and would not be available for the Cherries match, but he could be ready to face Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

“Gabbiadini cannot play this game, he is not available, but we will see for the next game,” Puel said.
