Chelsea and Manchester City target Virgil van Dijk steps up recovery

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has handed Southampton a major boost ahead of their run-in after posting a video of him running as he looks to speed up his return from injury.

The Dutch international posted a clip on Instagram of himself jogging on an anti-gravity AlterG treadmill, along with the message ‘stepping up’ as he looked to continue his comeback from ankle ligament damage.

The machine uses NASA technology to allow users to reduce the impact of gravity by selecting anywhere between 20 and 100 per cent of their own body weight, which makes it ideal for helping patients recovering from joint surgery and problems.

There were fears that he wouldn’t play again this season after a clash with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy forced him from the field in the Saints’ 3-0 win in January.

And it was thought that Van Dijk had pulled on a Southampton jersey for the last time, with reports persisting that he is a target for both Manchester City and Chelsea in the upcoming transfer window.

However, despite the recurring links with a move away from St Mary’s, the club’s chairman Ralph Krueger insists their star defender is going nowhere and stated that he is ‘committed’ to the club for ‘a long time’.

The injury proved a massive blow for Claude Puel and his side, with the former Celtic centre back forced to sit out the EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United at the end of February.

The loss of club captain and fellow defender Jose Fonte to fellow Premier League rivals West Ham in the January transfer window further deepened defensive problems for the South coast club.

Former Juventus stopper Martin Caceres did arrive on a free transfer to bolster the defensive ranks for Puel, but they have kept just one clean sheet in the league since Van Dijk’s injury.

It is thought that Southampton are already looking to the summer over a replacement for the 25-year-old and it is thought that Mamadou Sakho, who is currently on loan at Crystal Palace, is one of the club’s top targets.

Romeu looks forward to returning home

Show/hide article…

Southampton have not played a home fixture in almost two months, but will return to action on their own turf when they host Bournemouth on Saturday.

It has been a long wait for the fans, but also for the players.

“It’s been a while since out last home game and the chance to play in front of our fans,” said Romeu. “We feel more comfortable playing at home in St Mary’s.”

After just two games in March, this weekend’s match will kick off a run that sees Saints play six times in April.

“This month we haven’t played as much as we wanted,” Romeu told the Daily Echo. “Next month is going to be very busy with many games now and we need to be mentally ready.

“If we want to climb the table, we need to win these games, especially at home with our fans. We have played well recently so we need to keep that up. Hopefully we can start building a good run for the end of the season.

“We want to get as high as possible. When you look at the past, you check which position you finished. It is very different to finish 11th or 12th rather than seventh or eighth. We want to get this club in a good position.”

GOSSIP: Chelsea’s Nathan Ake to be offered to Saints in deal for Van Dijk this summer

Show/hide article…

CHELSEA have reportedly moved to the front of the queue to sign Saints centre half Virgil Van Dijk this summer.

Liverpool and Manchester City have also been repeatedly linked with the £50m-plus rated Dutch star in recent months, but the Daily Telegraph report that the Premier League champions elect are favourites to win the battle.

Highly-rated Nathan Ake - who impressed in a loan spell at AFC Bournemouth in the first half of this season - could be offered to Saints as part of the deal. Ake, who also did well on loan to Watford in 2015/16, is rated at around £15m.

The Telegraph also reports that Saints will again look at Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho as a possible replacement should Van Dijk leave St Mary’s.

Saints were interested in signing Sakho in January but were put off by a possible £20m price tag. He is currently on loan at Crystal Palace.

GOSSIP: Saints set to sell Van Dijk and sign Sakho

Show/hide article…

SAINTS star Virgil Van Dijk could be sold and replaced by Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho, it has been reported.

A national newspaper claims that Chelsea are the most likely destination for Dutch centre half Van Dijk, who has not played for Saints since he was injured in a challenge with Leicester striker Jamie Vardy in January.

But they are likely to face strong opposition from Saints, who insisted last month that they are confident of keeping Van Dijk, who has a rumoured price tag of about £50million.

Sakho was mooted as a possible target for Saints in January but manager Claude Puel dismissed the idea as “speculation”.

The French defender is currently on loan at Crystal Palace and has played a big part in the team keeping clean sheets in its last three games.

Wenger future, Champions League, relegation battle the Prem’s key issues

Show/hide article…

There’s no more international breaks between now and the end of the season, with the Premier League hotting up at both ends of the table.

Each club in the top flight has a key issue to resolve between now and the end of the campaign – from those fighting for a Champions League place to those battling to survive, everything will be resolved in the next few months.

Our Premier League bloggers tackle the crucial question their club must answer.

CHELSEA: Being 10 points clear with 10 games remaining carries with it a degree of self-satisfaction that has already manifested itself in the chant “We’re gonna win the league,” which supporters have been singing with increasing gusto and belief. Architect-in-chief of the title charge is Antonio Conte. Feted by the fans, he is on the radar of Inter Milan, who have the money and home-country appeal to tempt the Italian away from Stamford Bridge. Should Conte leave, it would wipe out the current feel-good factor in a heartbeat. Are Chelsea doing enough to ensure this does not happen? – Mark Worrall

TOTTENHAM: Spurs have tailed off in each of Mauricio Pochettino’s previous two seasons in charge, winning just four of their final 10 Premier League fixtures on both occasions. Can they finish strongly this time, secure second place and even win the FA Cup? – Ben Pearce

MAN CITY: Qualification for the Champions League is looking pretty secure, but can City end the season with a trophy? With only one realistically left to capture, it is vital Pep Guardiola’s first term ends with something tangible to build on. City’s first great trophy-winning side of the modern era is about to be dismantled and the next one built out of its ashes. An FA Cup as the transition takes place would be an ideal foundation for the new era under the Catalan. – Simon Curtis

LIVERPOOL: A new injury, this time to Adam Lallana, emphasises the difficulty Liverpool have had keeping their best players fit and firing on all cylinders, despite this happening in an England game. Jurgen Klopp’s frenetic style is delighting fans but if it is indirectly leading to a loss of key players during key moments in the season, it may have to be adjusted. Qualification for Europe next season would only exacerbate the problem, so alterations to style and training regimes will be important parts of Liverpool’s schedule during the summer. – Steven Kelly

MAN UNITED: Can Jose Mourinho get Manchester United’s attack firing? If they start scoring goals with the regularity we rightly expect from such talented forwards, then so much else – including not only a Champions League place, but maybe even a third-place finish – will fall into place. – Musa Okwonga

ARSENAL: The big question around Arsenal at the moment is the subject of the manager’s future. Although the current indications suggest Arsene Wenger intends to stay at the club, there is still no real clarity about his decision. Arsenal need an answer soon to prevent the lingering doubt becoming ever more corrosive. – James McNicholas

EVERTON: A seven-point gap and vastly superior goal difference to West Brom in eighth has Everton looking upward rather than over their shoulder. The question now is whether it will be Europa League or Champions League next season. – Luke O’Farrell

WEST BROM: With just nine games remaining, can Tony Pulis keep West Brom motivated enough to finish strongly in eighth place and record his first top half finish as a Premier League manager? – Matthew Evans

STOKE: With the side long-balling their way to a safe yet uninspiring finish, fans are right to question whether Mark Hughes’ exciting brand of football is ever going to make a return. – James Whittaker

SOUTHAMPTON: Can Southampton push on for a top-half finish? European qualification for a third successive season looks an unattainable dream so manager Claude Puel’s only focus will be on ending his maiden season as high up the table as possible. – Alex Crook

BOURNEMOUTH: Simon Francis and his position in the team for next season not only as captain but as a player is in serious doubt. He has from now until the end of the season to try and ensure his future as a Bournemouth player. – Will Kent

WEST HAM: The main concern before the end of the season is ensuring West Ham don’t get dragged into a relegation dogfight, while trying to build some sort of base for Slaven Bilic to build on next season. With fixtures against Hull, Swansea and Sunderland in the next month, Bilic’s own position is under close scrutiny. – Peter Thorne

BURNLEY: The Clarets need to be wary of complacency as the end of the season nears, with safety not quite assured and a run of seven games without a win in all competitions seeing them slip back towards the relegation zone. A couple of victories would likely be enough to survive, but the upcoming fixtures look testing and Stoke at home on April 5 will be very important. – Jamie Smith

WATFORD: After an encouraging start, Watford’s season has disintegrated into a grim battle on the fringes of the relegation scrap. This has left Hornets fans pondering the future of head coach Walter Mazzarri, while also asking what steps need to be taken to ensure future progress instead of the current stagnation. – Mike Parkin

LEICESTER: The question remaining for Leicester is whether they can go from the sublime to the brilliantly ridiculous and somehow win the Champions League, although realists and pessimists will simply ask for 40 points as soon as possible so everyone at the club can breathe easy … and continue to dream. – Ben Jacobs

CRYSTAL PALACE: Can Sam Allardyce continue to work his magic and secure the points his team needs? Of the 10 remaining fixtures, Palace have to face Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United. They have the quality, but do they have the tenacity to get a win or two from any of these teams? – Rob Sutherland

SWANSEA: The only question anyone in Swansea cares about is the biggest one of all – can they survive the drop? After two losses on the trot against beatable teams, Sunday’s must-win against Middlesbrough could provide the answer. – Max Hicks

HULL CITY: The one issue hanging over Hull City is the same one that has run through their season; can they stave off relegation back to the Championship? It remains an uphill task but they’re alive and kicking under coach Marco Silva. – Phil Buckingham

MIDDLESBROUGH: Was the sacking of Aitor Karanka too little, too late, or can Middlesbrough pull off something spectacular to avoid the drop? It’s all to play for in the last 10 games as they play a number of six-pointers against relegation rivals in a bid to retain Premier League status. – Catherine Wilson

SUNDERLAND: With most Sunderland supporters now resigned to at least a season in the Championship, any discussion of how another great escape might yet happen seems pure fantasy. Despite the slender hope generated by Jermain Defoe’s goals and Jordan Pickford’s goalkeeping heroics, it is more realistic to wonder when in April – when seven games are scheduled – relegation will become a mathematical certainty. – Colin Randall

Arsenal and Manchester United are most injured teams since 2011/12 season

Show/hide article…

Arsenal and Manchester United are most injured teams since 2011/12 season

Arsenal and Manchester United have suffered from injuries most over the last six years, a Sky Sports study has found.

In total, Arsenal players have been sidelined for 10,285 days during seasons since the start of 2011/12, while Manchester United have lost 9,600 days.

Sky Sports looked at every injury recorded by PhysioRoom.com of current Premier League clubs since the start of 2011/12, up to the most recent round of fixtures, and calculated the number of days missed during active seasons.

Liverpool host Everton live on Sky Sports this Saturday and the Merseyside clubs appear next on the injured list, with the Toffees missing 8,058 days and the Reds 8,044.

Of the teams that have featured in the top flight throughout the period, Chelsea have had the shortest period of lay-offs with just 4,559 days.

Meanwhile, Swansea have lost the second fewest number of days with 5,111, followed by West Brom (5,851), Manchester City (6,023) and Stoke (6,607).

Sunderland have been hit hardest by injuries this term with 1,761 days lost so far, followed by West Ham (1,574), Hull City (1,434), Watford (1,388) and Crystal Palace (1,385).

In contrast, West Brom’s impressive season has been boosted by a league low 389 days of injuries, while Chelsea’s title tilt has benefited from just 444 days lost.

The Gunners have lost 1,038 days in total, losing Santi Cazorla (150 days), Aaron Ramsey (117 days) and Per Mertesacker (166 days) for extensive periods.

Manchester United players have missed 787 days, with Phil Jones (90), Luke Shaw (84), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (81), Eric Bailly (59) and Chris Smalling (58) out for long spells.

The longest lay-offs this term have been Stoke’s Jack Butland, Everton’s Muhamed Besic and Hull’s Moses Odubajo, who have all missed the entire campaign so far.

Bournemouth’s Jack Wilshere, on loan from Arsenal, has been the most injured Premier League player over the period.

The England midfielder has missed 884 days during the last six seasons - 879 days during his time at Arsenal - of which 606 days were from foot and ankle injuries.

Former Gunner Abou Diaby is second on the list with 858 days on the sidelines before his move to Marseille in 2015, followed by Everton trio Darron Gibson (792), Tony Hibbert (768) and Steven Pienaar (744).

Next among the most injured are West Ham’s Andy Carroll (723), Manchester United’s Phil Jones (721), Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany (647) and Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge (640).

December has been the worst month for injuries with 683 cases since 2011/12 - supporting arguments for a winter break in England.

Indeed, the next worst months have been January (597) and November (586), followed by September (569) and February (568).

The season of 2014/15 produced more injuries than any other during the period in our study with 1,192 recorded, compared with 857 so far this season.

Martin Tyler’s stats: Goalless draws, youngest Merseyside derby scorers

Show/hide article…

The next round of Premier League fixtures and latest international matches feature in Martin Tyler’s stats column.

Would Tom Davies be the youngest player to score in a Merseyside derby? Would Jermain Defoe be the oldest player to score for England at a major tournament if he found the net at the 2018 World Cup?

Send your questions to Martin in one of the following ways…

Use the comments box at the bottom of this page.

I was at Wembley on Sunday to see England’s 2-0 win over Lithuania. They are now unbeaten in 34 qualifying matches and it was a 12th consecutive home win in qualifiers.

Joe Hart earned his 70th cap and is chasing down Gordon Banks (73), David Seaman (75) and could beat those this year. Peter Shilton on 125 may not be out of reach, as Joe is still only 29.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earned his first cap for almost 18 months, his 25th in all, and he remains unbeaten in England colours. That’s the best run ever for an England international at the start of their career.

Jermain Defoe scored his first England goal for four years and England have now beaten Lithuania 4-0, 3-0 and 2-0 - so it will be 1-0 in October if the sequence keeps going. The nine goals in those games have been scored by nine players - Rooney, Welbeck, Sterling, Kane, Barkley, Arlauskis (og), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Defoe and Vardy.

England are now the only country not to have conceded a goal in the European Qualifiers after Germany conceded in Azerbaijan on Sunday.

If Tom Davies scores against Liverpool, would that make him the youngest player to net in the Merseyside derby in the Premier League? (Pete Morgan)

MARTIN SAYS: Not quite. Davies would be the third youngest player to score in the derby, behind Francis Jeffers and Danny Cadamarteri.

Cadamarteri is the youngest player to score in the fixture in the Premier League, netting at the age of 18 years and six days as Everton beat Liverpool 2-0 in October 1997. I commentated on that goal.

Jeffers was 18 years and 67 days old when he scored for Everton in a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in April 1999.

Davies will be 18 years and 275 days old when the latest Merseyside derby is played, live on Sky Sports on Saturday.

Robbie Fowler is the youngest Liverpool player to score in the derby at 18 years and 338 days while Romelu Lukaku was 20 years and 194 days old when he scored for Everton in November 2013.

However, Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn could of course become the first 17-year-old to score in a Premier League Merseyside derby.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 encounters against Everton. Is this their current longest unbeaten run against a Premier League team? (Adam)

MARTIN SAYS: Yes it is. Their 12-match unbeaten run against Everton stretches back to October 2010 when they lost 2-0 at Goodison Park.

Liverpool have also not lost in 10 matches against Sunderland and have not been beaten in their last nine against Tottenham.

They are unbeaten in seven against West Brom and five against both Chelsea and Manchester City.

Liverpool’s unbeaten run is even longer in home matches against Everton. They haven’t lost to them this century. Everton’s last win at Anfield was in September 1999.

I’m a Middlesbrough fan and was wondering if we are on for a record number of 0-0s this season? (Terry)

MARTIN SAYS: Boro have had five goalless draws this season, but still have a way to go before they set a record.

Three teams have drawn nine games 0-0 in a Premier League campaign - Sheffield United in 1993/94 (a 42-game season), Leeds United in 1996/97 and Sunderland in 2014/15.

Middlesbrough have drawn 10 games in total - a joint league high with Manchester United, but Sheffield United were relegated in the 1993/94 season after drawing 18 of their 42 games.

Leeds managed to finish in mid-table in 1996/97, despite scoring just 28 goals while Sunderland avoided the drop in 2014/15 after drawing 17 of 38 games.

What’s the record for goals from substitutes in a PL season? (Jack Peters)

MARTIN SAYS: Eight substitutes have scored for Arsenal so far this season, and it’s the Gunners who hold the record of 15 in a Premier League campaign along with Liverpool and Manchester City.

Arsenal achieved the feat in 2009/10, Liverpool in 2015/16 and City when they won the Premier League in 2011/12.

Olivier Giroud has weighed in with four goals from the bench for the Gunners this season while Christian Benteke scored six as a substitute for Liverpool in 2015/16.

City were helped in their title bid in 2011/12 by substitute goals from Edin Dzeko (4), Adam Johnson (3) and Mario Balotelli (3).

Chelsea had 13 substitutes scoring in 2003/04 when they finished as runners-up behind Arsenal while Tottenham had the same number in 2007/08.

Chelsea have scored 158 substitute goals in Premier League history. That’s more than any other club.

There’s still a long way to go, but would Jermain Defoe be England’s oldest scorer at a major tournament if he scored at the World Cup in Russia? (Eddie)

MARTIN SAYS: England’s current oldest scorer at a major tournament is Tom Finney at the age of 34 years and 344 days at the 1958 World Cup.

If Defoe scores at the 2018 World Cup he will be 35, and only a few months away from turning 36 in October.

In fact, Finney is the only player over the age of 33 to score for England at a major tournament.

Wilf Mannion was 32 years and 39 days old when he netted at the 1950 World Cup while Trevor Brooking scored at the 1980 European Championships at the age of 31 years and 259 days.

Matt Upson, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney all make it into the top 10.

Upson was 31 years and 70 days old when he scored in a 4-1 defeat to Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

Beckham was 31 years and 54 days old when he netted against Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup and Rooney was 30 years and 246 days when he scored against Iceland at Euro 2016. In fact, Rooney turns 32 in October and could become the second oldest player behind Finney were he to score in Russia.

Gary Cahill could also potentially score at the age of 32, while Jamie Vardy could become another 30-something to score at a major tournament.

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini proves he’s a born finisher

Show/hide article…

Southampton signed striker Manolo Gabbiadini from Napoli for £14m in January, and after just five games he was beginning to look like a bargain.

The 25-year-old hit the ground running and scored six goal in all competitions for the Saints - including two against Manchester United in the League Cup final.

Unfortunately, the Italian was forced off during the first half in Southampton’s game against Spurs after picking up a groin injury.

Despite missing the international break, the injury is not thought to be serious and Claude Puel will be hoping for a swift return.

In the meantime, Southampton fans can enjoy the above video from the Sure Pressure Series which proves once again that Gabbiadini is a born goalscorer.

The Italian can be seen taking on teammates Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic in the finishing challenge.

Each player must try to score four different types of finishes - a last minute curler, a diagonal, a perfect first touch and a final touch.

Each player is awarded two points for a goal, one point for shooting on target and minus-one for shooting off target.

Redmond takes on the challenge first and gets a decent five points. Tadic follows suit and gets the same scoreline.

Gabbiadini steps up and immediately scores a top bins worldy - Redmond knows he’s in trouble.

The Italian proceeds to go one better than his teammates and finish on seven points, crowning him champion of Sure Pressure series episode one.
